Ubuntu Installation :: Upgrading With Recommended Apps & Settings?

Oct 8, 2010

I was wondering: Is there a way to upgrade to a new Ubuntu version without completely reinstalling the system and to use the recommended apps and settings of the new version?

Reason I ask is that almost every time I upgraded to a new version by using the update-manager and than later installed that new Ubuntu version on another computer from scratch, I noticed that there are some differences. For example let's say the new version promoted a new UI design or some default apps have been replaced. These changes have not been applied to the upgraded version.

Ubuntu Installation :: Upgrading From Beta To Release Recommended?

Apr 1, 2010

I'm fed up with Gentoo and would like to migrate to Ubuntu. I just installed 10.04 Beta, but I'm wondering if I should continue configuring my system. Is it possible/easy/painless to upgrade to the release version when it comes out? Or should I stop investing any work into the beta right now and wait for the release?

CentOS 5 :: Recommended Apps To Monitor Temperatures?

Dec 30, 2009

I'm running CentOS 5.4 on an Atom-based motherboard with a quiet, low-power PSU. As the only fan left is a 40mm fan to cool the Intel 945GC chip, I'd like to run a utility to monitor the 945GC and HD temperatures. Ideally, it should be able to run the 945GC fan faster when it's needed.

Networking :: VoIP And Opening Ports With Recommended Settings

Nov 7, 2009

I have recently bought a IP/PABX system with one FXO and one FXS port. I intend to install this on a remote site with a public but dynamic IP (can be resolved via dyndns though) and make calls via clients that are NATTed (inside a home router). I would like to seek advice on the port opening and the recommended settings. I have been reading a lot on VOIP and I am getting feedback that SIP calls are difficult to establish on a NATTed environment.

1.) SIP port 5060 UDP?
2.) RTP ports - what range should I open for this? I see some use 10000-20000 UDP
3.) STUN server - Is this something that needs to be configured?

How can I ensure that the other party can hear the audio just like a regular telephone? Is it really impossible to do if the client is behind a router in which it is using a Private IP Address? What other network configurations needs to be done?

Fedora Installation :: Upgrade From F13 To F15 - Recommended?

May 24, 2011

I am running a very stable F13 on my little box and I was thinking to upgrade from F13 directly to F15 using the preupgrade-cli tool. Is this recommended, or should I go to F14 first? I would like to skip that step:

The F13 is my home server with a lot of services:
- IMAP (dovecot)
- Postfix
- Postgresql
- apache (tons of php)
- vmware workstation 7.1.4
- dhcpd
- named
- samba
- squid

I am worried that the upgrade will break something. I spent a lot of time setting these things up.

Software :: Importing Thunderbird Settings From Portable Apps Thunderbird

Sep 13, 2010

I had a portable apps version of Thunderbird (windows) that runs off a thumb drive and wanted to take the settings and transfer them to my Thunderbird that's on my Linux computer.

This is what I did:

First, I installed thunderbird on my Ubuntu 10.04 Linux box and opened it, and closed it (so that it would create the /home/<username>/.thunderbird folder in the user account).

Then, I renamed the linux /home/<username>/.thunderbird folder to .thunderbird_ORIGINAL

Then, I created a new /home/<username>/.thunderbird folder

Then, I took the windows e:ThunderbirdPortableDataprofile folder and copied it to the /home/<username>/.thunderbird folder.

Then, I looked into the /home/<username>/.thunderbird_ORIGINAL folder and wrote down the name of the folder with the ".default" extension.

Then, I renamed the profile folder (that came from the windows e:ThunderbirdPortableData folder) "<name-I-wrote-down>.default".

And then, I copied the profiles.ini folder from /home/<username>/.thunderbird_ORIGINAL to the /home/<username>/.thunderbird folder.

I opened up Thunderbird in Linux and everything seems fine! (I'll definitely be keeping a backup just in case)

My question is: is this fine and dandy, or a recipe for disaster?

Ubuntu Installation :: No Display For Two Different Apps?

Dec 19, 2010

I require the use of two apps that appear to have similar problems and am wondering if they stem from the same problem. Both have been installed from .deb files and are not part of the official repos. The first is OpenCPN which, when installed, creates a menu entry. The the initial splash screen displays but after clicking OK, nothing appears at all.The second is Inform 7, which was working fine for a couple of days. Now the Game tab is empty. This is the tab that renders a version of the final game whilst working on it.Without knowing the two apps I realise it is difficult to get an understanding of what is wrong with them but it seems to be my machine that's at fault, not the apps as apparently they run fine on other people's machines. What checks can I do to get to the bottom of these problems?

So I wonder if it is possible to set the computer so that they can use the software center. What is the best method to do this? The apps mustn't be installed system-wide.

Is it better to just install over an older version or remove the older version, and then install the new version clean

If you remove and older version of an application first, what is the best method for doing this and removing any residual files etc that might be left on your system?

I then put together a new laptop with a new drive, I can connect my old drive via USB to the new Lappy, and pull any essential data over to the new system, my question is. How do I import the list of apps I used to run into the new lappy, to have Aptitude or apt pull down and reload everything I "was" using? I figure there is a simple way, just not sure how to do it from a non-running distro via usb connection..

Ubuntu Installation :: Upgrading To 10.10 From 10.04?

Jun 24, 2010

I am upgrading to Ubuntu 10.10 Alpha 1. This is on my gaming machine so I can test it and if it screws my system up, I can reinstall. I have not seen any issues so far. I think there might be a thread already open for talking about 10.10 but I am creating this thread anyways.

The upgrade is going faster than when i first did the upgrade earlier this month.I am testing Ubuntu 10.10 on a computer with a 1.6Ghz AMD 64 processor. It has 3 GB ram and a 500GB hard drive. 128 MB video ram.

Note: This is The emachines EL 1200-06w I am using a Belkin wireless card which is only able to be used with the help of Windows Wireless Drivers (ndiswrapper).

I plan to report bugs in launchpad. Last time, Ubuntu could not start after an update. Now, I am risking down time by using the Alpha version again. I am installing by going to: Applications -> Accessories -> Terminal In Terminal, I enter in

Code:
sudo update-manager -d and then it asks for a password to open update manager. Then it shows the upgrade is available. I am still at the process of upgrading the computer. I am running Ubunut 10.04 32 bit at the moment.

UPDATE: I didn't need ndiswrapper, and I am able to now use Natty, where it works as it should.
