View 1 Replies View RelatedA processor is very important to me and I'm curious what processor to get for a new computer build. I will be using Ubuntu for most things except iTunes, HD movies, and a few low spec requiring games on Win 7. I am building it as right now I have a half year old netbook that can do most things just fails at game play and movies but it's alright. And I have a desktop with just Ubuntu that's about the same quality but 8 years old. I want to build a computer that will be very fast for the next 4 years enough to get me to college and buy a nice laptop. I am on a small budget of around 500- 750 dollars. I have most things picked out but processor has me stumped. To me processor is a bit tricky to replace and I'd rather get a higher-end one to start and stick with that than buy another CPU two years down the road.
I don't mind upgrading RAM, GPU, and or even the HDD at a later point but I want to get the CPU as close to perfect as possible. First I heard AMD processors tend to be a bit hot. I was wondering what cooler is $50 or less that does a great job at cooling a AMD AM3 socket CPU. I do plan to overclock a very small bit perhaps up to .3 GHz plus max. First I was thinking a nice core i5 at $200 and never really checked anything else. Then, I was thinking a hexa-core at 2.8 GHz I think but decided too much and didn't need six cores. The AMD socket type also supported USB 3.0 which I instantly fell in love with. Then I found a quad core Phenom II x4 black edition at 3.20 GHz for around $160.I liked the core unlocker and it looked incredible. Now I'm rethinking a bit again.
I found a dual-core that is same thing as the other AMD one above except well only two cores. I think that would do me fine I'd I'd save $60 by getting 2 less cores. With the things I use a computer for (Ubuntu, Win7, HD quality playback, minor gaming like Runescape, and small multitasking like openoffice a browser or two and perhaps some pictures, game or movie.) I also want to be able to do this quickly for the next 4 years without a hiccup or at least to a minimum if possible. I really don't want to upgrade CPU once I get that bad boy in there. I also want it ready for higher versions of Windows like Windows 8 is supposedly coming sometime in 2012 I've heard. I just want the best CPU to be fast and efficient, run cool, and work well for me for the next 4 years.
I am trying to build a low cost computer, and over the last few days, I was interested in Linux as my OS to use. All I really need for the computer was the internet, word processors, and 3 games: "Wizard101", "Fusion Fall", and "Free Realms". Would Linux run on a built computer with an AMD processor and an on-board GPU? And would Linux run all of my needs/wants for this computer?

That address is the one when it is connected through the wireless; but when it got logged out i guess it shuts the wlan interface off.

I have a linux machine on my university network where I usually log in via ssh from home. I have know the ip, so this is what I use to log in, but it would convenient to know if my computer have a hostname on the local network (it's easier than remembering the ip).I set up a hostname when I installed linux on my pc, but it's not the name associated with that ip on the network. Is there a way to find out if there's a name associated with that ip?

About 70% of the time, my computer is unable to find any wireless signals whatsoever, despite being right next to the router. When it does find the signal it connects fine and runs great, but most of the time it doesn't show any signals at all. I can't find any pattern to when it does or doesn't find the signal. I've been trying to find a way to watch videos from my main desktop computer on another computer I've plugged into an HDTV. I'm such a Linux newbie that I decided to give Mythbuntu a try. It was way to complicated for what I needed, and I'm sure that some more experienced people reading my first two sentences laughed to themselves at my naivety.
What I am trying to find is simple: browsing one computer's home folder from another computer, and playing the videos therein. If there's anything like Mythvideo that requires less than half of the skill requirements, I will telepathically send love to the person that informs me of it.

View 3 Replies View RelatedI have a small netbook that I would like to use as a terminal for my main computer, so instead of opening Gnome-terminal on my computer it will run from my netbook.
what i want to know is how to ssh from my netbook into my main computer and run an application on that computer.
So i would like to be able to ssh into my computer, and when i type "vlc movie.avi" it will open and run on the REMOTE computer just as if i had opened gnome-terminal and typed the command there.
Note: I'm not looking for something/anything like "ssh -X" or VNC or Remote Desktop.
I forgot to run a GUI process on a remote computer. I need to run the application as if I was at the computer i.e the application needs to open on the desktop on the remote computer.
I can connect to the computer through an ssh tunnel via another computer at the remote site and run non GUI based processes using Screen or bring some GUI programs to the computer I'm working from using the ssh -X option, however, this is not what I'm looking to do.
On Windows I used to use a program from sysinterns called PsExec which would let me start applications such as Word on the remote computer and I'm hoping that there is something similar on Linux.
For the past day or so, mysqld has been hogging one of my two CPUs. On System Monitor, I tried "kill" and then "forcibly kill" when that button appeared on the menu but all that happened was a new mysqld popped up to take its place. I've since found that killing Akonadi first and then the forcible kill did the job so the problem seems to be solved. What bothers me, is what was it trying to do? I don't use the application. I wondered whether Thunderbird might use it so closed that down and rebooted but mysqld was still there. I suppose now I've got rid of that one - for now - I'll get knotify4 grabbing a cpu again. At least knotify4 is easy to kill - but then xorg usually takes over and I have to end the session.

I have access to linux machines running Ubuntu, however, the space allocated to us is too small for the program I would like to run on these computers. I do have webspace I can use though. The thing I'd like to be running on the linux computers is a windows application requiring installation. So is there a way to put/install/(whatever else it might be called) this program onto my webspace and be able to run it from the linux computers? I know it's probably unlikely, but maybe?

I just updated to 11.04 today after deciding I couldn't just read about Unity anymore and wanted to experience it for myself. I'll save my thoughts for the Experiences forum; suffice to say that so far I think that it's organized and, for the most part, intuitive.
That said, I am having a problem finding an application that I know is installed. I use Crossover Games to run Steam, and though Steam is running just fine (just played a quick game of TF2 to make sure) I cannot for the life of me find Crossover. In 10.10, it was under Applications > Games. In Unity, it will not show up no matter how I search for it (Steam, however, does with no issues). I have searched for Crossover, codeweaver, cross, code, games, etc, to no avail.
Any tips or comments on how I may find this application? It shows up in my Installed Software in Software Center even!
Using Jaunty and trying to install a 56k modem driver with gdebi but when I go to install it tells me I have to close all other application managers. I cannot find any other application managers running in system monitor. Synaptic and update manager are both off at this point.
I'm in a dual boot with xp. Something tells me I should have bought that USR modem with the native Linux driver rather than the cheaper Aopen unit
I will be upgrading to Lucid in the coming weeks but would like to resolve this beforehand if possible.

AFAIK,applications installation are distributed across various directories in Linux(man pages,executable files,etc..)and the very close i can get is to run 'whereis' command which gives me all the paths where the application's files are stored.
Do i have to manually go to each and every such paths and check their sizes??
I am a beginner Ubuntu 9.10 user. I downloaded and installed the latest version of the sun VirtualBox. My problem is I cannot find where it is installed and that's why I could not run it. Generally, when I install a program the shortcut appears in the menu "Applications->ClassOfInstalledFile". But Virtual Box did not appear. How to find the icon, or simply how to run this application and have a shortcut of it on the "Applications" menu?
View 1 Replies View RelatedI set up a dhcp server in the lan and assigned static ips to two computers, computer A and B, according to their mac address. Everything was running fine. But when I turned off computer A, connected computer C to the network, and assigned computer A's static ip to computer C without changing dhcp setting. Computer C was able to access the internet. When I turned on computer A, dhcp couldn't assign an ip address to it, and computer C showed an error message of ip conflict and failed to use internet. I wonder if dhcp server is able to prevent other computer from using the same static ip that is already assigned to a computer according to its mac address.

Now that Ive converted it to 10.04 (completely) it can see the network, but it just wont connect to it. I had no problem converting my computer to Ubuntu and it sees the network and accesses it great. Files, folders and hard drives are all shared.
