View 6 Replies View RelatedI've been trying to find a way to watch videos from my main desktop computer on another computer I've plugged into an HDTV. I'm such a Linux newbie that I decided to give Mythbuntu a try. It was way to complicated for what I needed, and I'm sure that some more experienced people reading my first two sentences laughed to themselves at my naivety.
What I am trying to find is simple: browsing one computer's home folder from another computer, and playing the videos therein. If there's anything like Mythvideo that requires less than half of the skill requirements, I will telepathically send love to the person that informs me of it.

I've been thinking of turning my old computer into a media center for a while now (it was running Ubuntu Server 9.10). I recently bought a new 23inch screen so.. out with the server, in with the media center! (currently Xubuntu but running on LXDE as it's a lot lighter) My problem: The computer barely manages to play 720p videos on XBMC (on ..... or totem/vlc it's just impossible with breaks, lag and constant freezes).. I used the debug function of XBMC and guess what.. a 720p movie takes my cpu to a constant 100% usage!! =X
So here's my question.. what distro or 'buntu flavor would you advise me to use?? I thought about a minimal install but don't want to try it just yet..

I installed it, and it's not letting me connect to the Internet. I don't really know what specs and that you need to know.

What is the recommended system specs in order to be able to run Unity with no problems?
View 2 Replies View RelatedI recently upgraded to 11.04, and after messing around with Unity for awhile decided I'd try out Gnome 3.After rebooting to finish the installation, I noticed that the interface had reverted to what my desktop looked like in 10.10, except the color scheme was different. I also got an error message saying my computer's graphics couldn't handle Gnome 3 (I'm on a netbook). Then I went online to look up instructions on how to switch back to Unity (since the option wasn't available on the login screen). After following the first step, which involved entering a command into the terminal, I left the house for awhile.
When I got back, the screen was black with white text (terminal-esque) asking for my username. After typing it in and pressing enter, it asked for my password, and after entering that it became a "terminal". This screen comes up every time I start my computer now, and I have no idea what to do. I could reinstall Ubuntu from a flash drive, but I want to be able to access my files. Is there any way to get around this, or recover my files without taking out the hard drive? As you can probably tell from my post, I'm very new to Ubuntu and Linux, and the mess I'm now in is the result of acting on uneducated impulse.
How can I find the detailed specifications of my hard drive? I installed VMware player and created a Win7 VM guest.Performance is pretty bad.Heard that VMware player is not built for SATA drives, but I don't know what type I haveAm interested in using VirtualBox, because it has support for SATA drives, but, again, I am not sure what type of drive I have. Just need to know the specs on my hard drive so I know what type of VM software to install/run/enjoy

View 2 Replies View RelatedI'm not sure what Nvidia driver I installed the other day, but it's messed things up. After Ubuntu boots up and asks for login, I am greeted with terminal. Setting 1152Xwhatever resolution failed. Setting to 1024X768. My xorg.conf.old file is completely empty, so I have no idea what the original settings were. I have tried removing and reinstalling xserver.xorg but that hasn't seemed to get me anywhere. I have also used the "apt-cache search nvidia" command to see what drivers could be installed, but every single driver that I attempt to remove isn't installed.

When I do an automatic on wordpress it asks for ftp credentials. I don't my ftp credentials. I was not aware that I had ftp username and password. I am not sure if that means I installed the ftp server without knowing. my root password does not work on this.
I tried searching through wordpress forums but most of them show me how to set the ftp username and password in wp-config file so that it doesn't ask for it every time.
How can I find out the ftp username and password on my computer.
I'm having a hard time installing Ubuntu 10.10 (32bits). I load the CD and everything's ok throughout the installing procedure, but when the installation is over and it says it's gonna reboot it doesn't do it!
The screen resembles a terminal with a message like "the computer is going to reboot NOW!" but it could stay like that for hours. The keyboard is locked so I can't reboot by commands, and if I press CTRL+ALT+DEL it just reprints the same message. Therefore I'm forced to turn off my computer manually.
After that, the Ubuntu desktop doesn't load. The screen shows a terminal asking for my username and password to access the computer. No graphics at all.
I'd like to find all files of a specific type (as determined by the terminal "file" command) from the command line ... and haven't been able to figure out a way to do so. For instance, I'd like to be able to find all JPEG files in my filesystem, even if their names don't end in .jp*. It would be helpful to be able to combine this with other tests in find, so that I could type something like "sudo find / -atime 0 -size +1M -type adobeflash" or something like that.
I've looked for ways to hook find up to file and tinkered around with a few ideas involving pipes, but nothing seems to get what I want.
