Ubuntu Installation :: Why Does 10.10 Have 'Swap Area' Configuration
Oct 12, 2010I was so excited that finally I can get the newest version of Ubuntu installed on my computer. Yesterday I downloaded the iso file and emptied my F:/ disk, hoping I can install it this morning. Everything was perfect until I met 'swap area'. I thought it was just that the installing program needed some free space during the process. Storage hierarchy, caching, something like that. So I configured my E:/ disk as the 'swap area'.
Bad decision! After everything was done, I rebooted ubuntu, only finding that my E:/ no longer existed!!!! I couldn't believe my eyes, so I rebooted back to Win7. E:/ disk wasn't there any more! Now I have to accept the bitter truth. All my journals, photos, and documents are ruined. My point is that: if something like 'swap area' is not so common sense to everybody, why does it have to be there? And if it will format that disk, why aren't I noticed? Not so long ago, I heard some one claimed that the ubuntu10.10 installing process would be revolutionized, much more user-friendly. Well, this is not what I've expected.

Feb 10, 2011I need to reinstall Ubuntu, problem is, I don't know if I need a new swap area to replace the old one or just check the old one to be formatted. Or do I just leave it as it is and after installation Ubuntu will make use of it? Couldn't decide if this should go in "Installation & Upgrades" or "General Help" since it's a bit of both.

Apr 25, 2011I am borrowing a friend's Eee PC 4G. Ubuntu eventually crashed because the hard drive filled up (even after all personal files had been removed). So now I'm trying to reinstall Ubuntu Netbook 10.10 from a bootable USB. Creating the USB worked fine and I managed to get all the way to the "Allocate drive space" screen. I opted to make no partitions and just use the entire disk space for the install. It tells me that 2 partitions will be deleted, which is fine. I then click Forward and it just hangs there endlessly, spinning its wheel. I suspect that the already-full hard drive may be causing problems. Is there any way around this so I can get the computer running again?

Jan 24, 2011I have a notebook with dual boot windows and Ubuntu 10.10 on a 80 Gig hard drive. The windows XP partition was initially installed and took up the whole drive (dev/sda1). I then freed up some space and created and installed Ubuntu (/dev/sda6) and swap (/dev/sda5) on an extended partition (/dev/sda2). Initially I only freed up 3.6 Gig which I thought would be more than enough but not any more. I cannot even install the updates as there is only 100 Meg left which is not enough. I then freed up more space (8 gig) from the windows partition to allocate to Ubuntu.
My problem is that I can't seem to find to now allocate this "freed-up" space to Ubuntu? I realise that I have to boot-up from a the Ubuntu live disk so that the hard drive is not mounted to allow changes but I'm still unable to change the partitions. I'm using GParted.
The drive looks like this currently:

I already have XP and Ubuntu installed, and I know for certain that I have an additional 25 GB left with my documents partition included. I am using a ~= 1 week old hard drive, so that last 25 GB is raw and unformatted.Anyway, here's what's going on: When I attempt to create a new partition in the "free space," I get an error dialog saying "Could not allocate requested partitions: not enough free space on disks."I thought maybe it was a quirk with the ext3/ext4 dilemma, maybe I had to create /boot prior to /, but I tried it both ways.

Jun 21, 2011I have an Acer Aspire One that came with Windows 7 starter and 1GB of ram. I am currently trying to install Ubuntu 11.04 via USB drive. The problem that I am having is, whenever I get to the Allocate drive space screen it shows nothing. The box is pink with not text. If I click on Install now anyway I receive a No Root File System error. Currently the hard drive has NO partitions on it, including no file systems. It's completely blank and it is also showing up in my BIOS.

Ubuntu Installation :: 10.04 Installation Fails - Swap Does Not Mount
Sep 19, 2010I had a problem with the install of Ubuntu 10.04 and 10.04.1 on a Dell Precision T3500. I used the 32bit live CD. I let the installer create the file systems and use the whole disc. The disc is was created as shown below. After the install button was pressed, the root file system was created and then the swap. When the installer went to mount the swap it complained there was not enough memory and failed the installation. I installed Ubuntu by manually making the swap file system smaller using gparted and assigning the / and swap to the file systems created by gparted.

Jul 11, 2010I'm trying to install Fedora 13 on my HP dv6 laptop and when I try to use the Use Free Space installation type, I receive a Partitioning Error: Could not allocate requested partitions - not enough free space on disks. Before I started the install, I used the Disk Management utility in Windows 7 to shrink the volume of the C: drive down to 242 GB and leaving 210 GB Unallocated. Here is what the screen looks like when I select Create Custom Layout (also receive the not enough free space error):

I created two EXT3 partitions (one for /boot and the other for /) and alinux swap partition after leaving 500 GB for my C drive on the HDD. I then booted into linux using the install ISO burned onto a CD. I can see the menu where I get the option to install/run Ubuntu and the option to install in text mode, but when I go ahead,I get the following errors Install Errors After these messages, the monitor goes blank and nothing happens.

Jan 18, 2010Last night I upgraded to the 10.04 development release, and I am pleased with what I see so far. I ran into a problem, however, with the power manager.I am using an MSI Wind U100.
First, I have lost my battery icon from the notification area. It reappears if I plug in, or unplug my AC adapter.
Second, under, "Power Management Preferences" I have lost my "On Battery Power" tab, leaving only, "On AC Power" and "General"
If I wait about seven minutes, the battery icon will appear in the notification area, but the tab remains lost.The problem is due to update. I have confirmed by installing a fresh 9.10 and upgrading again to 10.04 without making any other changes to system.

Apr 11, 2010I tried to install java runtime in the terminal, and I got to the 'contract acceptance' page, and I couldn't find a way to accept and move forward, so I just closed the Terminal, killing the process. later, I went to the ubuntu software center, and tried to install java runtime using that. the status for the installation remained at 0% and said "waiting for other software managers to quit". so I exited out of software center. then update manager popped up, asking me to update several things, including installing java runtime.so I hit yes, and it said this:E:dpkg was interrupted, you must manually run 'dpkg --configure-a' to correct the problem
so I ran:
sudo dpkg --configure -a
sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get upgrade

Ubuntu Installation :: 11.04 Sandy Bridge Display Area Overflows Bottom?
May 8, 2011I built a new system with an Intel i5 and ASUS P8H-67-M LX motherboard that uses the Sandy Bridge chip set for video. It is a recent version without the original bugs. I use a 24" monitor, VisionQuest(Plain Tree Systems) and it supports 1920 * 1200. In System Settings > Monitor Preferences I confirm the resolution as 1920 * 1200. The Monitor is detected properly.
Drop down windows, such as my Firefox bookmarks drop below the bottom of the screen, without any scroll bars. I can drag the mouse pointer below the bottom edge of the screen. It disappears. In contrast, on my older system with Ubuntu 10.04 the mouse pointer will never totally disappear. The top tip remains.
It is like Ubuntu, when rendering the display, thinks I have something like a 1920 * 1280 screen, and everything in that bottom 80 vertical just falls off. Seems like a bug, and maybe a simple one to fix.

Jan 6, 2010I was in the process of upgrading my ubuntu system (probably the latest version, it was about a month ago) and my computer froze (it does that on occasion). I have looked around this site, and tried a few things. I assume I am supposed to use the command "sudo dpkg --configure -a" to fix it. The problem is that when I do that, I get the message "dpkg: unable to access dpkg status area: read-only file system". So, what do I do now? I definitely dont want to mess up my system, but I want to fix it.

Apr 30, 2010completed the first of my five pending Lucid upgrades a few hours ago, the upgrade progress went real smooth. SoI have been checking various apps to make sure they are working ok after the upgrade, and noticed that Amarok will not show its notification (tray) icon in the usual place after the upgrade. This is a pain because normally one would launch Amarok, select a playlist/album whatever, than close the window and skip tracks whatever using the tray icon. Did a bit of googling and found a bug in launchpad it's because Amarok draws a custom icon instead of passing a bitmap, or something, but cannot locate the bug again now. I then tested Rhythmbox and found the same issue.

The options are: Install 11.04 alongside 10.04, Upgrade 10.04 to 11.04, Erase 10.04 and reinstall, Something else. Erase 10.04 and reinstall is the option I want, but that is not an option when I actually try to install it. The installer detected that I have Ubuntu 10.04 and Windows XP, and gave me the following options: Install 11.04 alongside both, Erase both OSes and install 11.04, Something else. I want to install 11.04 over 10.04 and leave Windows alone. I guess I have to do the partition stuff, but I don't want to screw anything up. Here's how my partitions are currently set up.

I can install 9.4 64 bit (but no network to update from), but 10.4 and 10.10 both fail -- I cannot get the Allocate drive space screen to list the available drives. Just a blank panel. The drive is listed in the Boot loader panel. The LiveCD works. Disk utility and Gparted are both available. At one point I even managed to mount the 9.4 file system on the LiveCD, I think using "sudo mount"

It didn't boot successfully as the system kept rebooting. I then tried to install grub onto the MBR and boot partition (mounted at /mnt/tempboot).

Fedora Installation :: Installation - Creating A Swap Partition Or A Boot Partition?
Jul 27, 2009I have a brand new thinkpad X301 with 4GB of RAM and thinking of getting fedora 11 on it. The plan is to have it triple boot with vista/seven and hopefully OSx86. I am aware of the 4 primary partitions limit on an MBR disk. I was thinking of having a swap file instead of swap partition and not creating a boot partition as well. If I install the boot loader(GRUB?) on the root partition will I be able to boot it without any problems by using vista's boot loader?
Or Maybe I should install GRUB on the MBR and add all the other operating systems on it? Does anyone have any objections for not creating a swap partition or a boot partition? When comes to desktop environment I've been using KDE in the past, is there any major advantage of using Gnome over it? KDE seems to look really nice on fedora where Gnome is maybe more stable?

Whatever Partition i create first (boot or /), it gets done. However, when tryin to create the 2nd partition, i get "Could not allocate requested partitions:Not enough free space on disks." Cant proceed any further.

Jan 29, 2010I have an existing Ubunto 9.10 install sitting on a 500 GB SATA drive that was sitting in my second SATA port. I'm trying to swap the internal HD out to a new system that has a 500 GB SATA drive with Windows 7 on it as the primary drive, in SATA port 0. When I configure BIOS to boot from my Ubuntu drive, I just get a flashing cursor on the screen and no Grub bootloader like I was before.
Does this mean Grub isn't on my Ubuntu drive? Should I install grub on both my Ubuntu drive's MBR AND my primary Windows 7 drive's MBR, or only one of the other. The instructions I've been reading don't specify which drive to reinstall Grub on and which drive I should boot from, so I'm confused. How do I get it so that Grub acknowledges my Windows 7 install on the primary drive?

Why is this only copying 1.0kB? Do I need to format the extended drive first? I have tried specifying the block size and count a number of different ways with the same results.
