Ubuntu Installation :: 11.04 Sandy Bridge Display Area Overflows Bottom?
May 8, 2011
I built a new system with an Intel i5 and ASUS P8H-67-M LX motherboard that uses the Sandy Bridge chip set for video. It is a recent version without the original bugs. I use a 24" monitor, VisionQuest(Plain Tree Systems) and it supports 1920 * 1200. In System Settings > Monitor Preferences I confirm the resolution as 1920 * 1200. The Monitor is detected properly.
Drop down windows, such as my Firefox bookmarks drop below the bottom of the screen, without any scroll bars. I can drag the mouse pointer below the bottom edge of the screen. It disappears. In contrast, on my older system with Ubuntu 10.04 the mouse pointer will never totally disappear. The top tip remains.
It is like Ubuntu, when rendering the display, thinks I have something like a 1920 * 1280 screen, and everything in that bottom 80 vertical just falls off. Seems like a bug, and maybe a simple one to fix.

I have an i5 sandy bridge PC with a gigabyte H67M mobo. I have been running maverick amd64 till yesterday. On maverick graphic acceleration didn't work so I decided to upgrade. After upgrade my computer hangs during bootup (with ubuntu logo on screen). I cannot see messages on screen, wasn't ESC key for that? Live CD seems to boot but also hangs computer after loading purple login wallpaper before login dialog is shown. To me it seems a graphic card regression issue since intel mobo graphic card wasn't working fine on maverick too. Also tried to manage with fail-safe graphic mode but this also hangs computer. Is there any log where I can see errors during last bootup from maverick live-cd?

after installing Natty on my brand new shuttle with Intel's Sandy Bridge Core i5 (2500K), everything works fine except setting up a higher resolution fitting to my screen. All I need is a 2048x1152 resolution, but all the display configuration in the hardware section of the system settings offers is 1024x768, 800x600, 848x480 or 640x480.The monitor is connected via VGA since it doesn't have a DVI or HDMI plug.Is there a way to tell the system there is more capability? Do I need a different driver? What and where can I check this?

I'm in the process of switching back to Fedora after years of hiatus, but I can't get my wireless card working. The card itself is an Atheros AR2413, and the problem is that it seems to appear OK in various places, BUT it doesn't detect any networks. I'm on Fedora 14.

I am looking at various laptops at the moment and it's appealing to get a quad core (2720QM) when I need the power (yes, I have an application that can utilize many cores in parallel just fine). But, most of the time those extra cores will just there eating battery. Is it possible to switch a few off?

I've just installed 10.10 and the screen is shifted down (meaning, there is a black bar at the top of the Acer AL1916W monitor and the bottom menu bar is hidden - the accessible). The Acer controls seem to have no effect on this.

I just added a nice little HDTV as a second display on my laptop, it worked fine but I found that the text was a bit hard to read so I decided to change it, got another one yesterday, just plugged it in and everything was perfect. Today I came back from work, plugged the laptop in the monitor, booted the machine, and got a wrapped display, the bottom part (about 1/4 of teh display) seem to be stuck with the content that was visible when I opened my session, and the top part is shifted up, making it totally useless.I took a picture of the display, you can see it here [URL]... I will try to see what happen if I put back the other display, but I really want to get working with the new one.

I've been having some trouble configuring my Nvidea GT 430 with my LCD TV. When I specify the larger resolutions like 1920x1080, there is always one inch trimmed off around edge. First using Linux Mint 10 LXDE, I booted with the new graphics card in. Without loading any drivers, I was able to select 800x600 or 640x480 and those had an inch of black around the screen. I installed the proprietary Drivers and then the screen was cut off a bit on the edges and the text was so tiny i couldn't see anything.
I then tried Linux Mint 11 Gnome. The text was readable, but still couldn't get the screen to match the TV edges correctly. I think it is a problem with my TV as this happens in windows and Linux. My TV is older and doesn't allow me to resize the screen within its menus. However, in windows I am able to use the Nvidea tools to resize my resolution to a custom size. It turned about to be about 1800x1020. I only really like using windows unless I absolutely have to though.. Is there a way to manually resize the display area in the xorg.config file? or any other workaround?

I have an NVIDIA video card attached to my LG plasma TV by vga cable. My display is offset slightly with some of the left-most and top-most area of the screen out of range with an equal amount of black/unused screen to the bottom and right. Is there a way for me to recalibrate my display to correct for this?

I am running 10.04 Lucid on a Toshiba Satellite A105. The onboard video is an Intel Graphics Media Accelerator 950. The issue is that when I connect it to my Panasonic widescreen TV (laptop is widescreen as well) the display is shrunk and has a lot of unused space on the sides/top/bottom. So like, if I wanna watch something from Hulu, I plug in the S-Video, and I can watch on the TV, but it's not using all the screen available... I have not found a way to resize the output so it fills the screen.

I might get harassed for making this windows/linux comparison, but i'm seriously wondering why i cant find any application that can display a quick little notification on the bottom right hand corner of my screen whenever there's some intrusion attempt.
For example, sometimes I can see that in my /etc/logs/secure (or something like that) there's someone who's trying to attempt to connect to me using random usernames/passwords from different servers. The only time I know this has happened is when i actually open the file with gedit. Is there anything like (norton for windows) that can display little notifications (with or without eye candy)??

I want to set up a bridge using bridge-utils within /etc/network/interfaces like is shown here in this guide: [URL] The problem is that, at the same time, I want eth0 to have a specific static IP address. Right now I have a configuration for eth0. This guide tells me that I should not configure eth0 outside of the br0 configuration.

So about an hour ago I put my computer on standby. For whatever reason I couldn't bring it back so I restarted it. It works fine except now Ubuntu has pushed my display down. This means that the bottom of my tool-bar on the bottom of the screen is cut off, and there's a black bar on the top. I'm using a T.V. screen so there is no way I can manually adjust it. I also plugged my desktop back into an old monitor and it was off-center downward too.

I'm having trouble installing Ubuntu in either text mode or default graphical mode.
Here's my configuration:
1) Intel core i7-960 (8MB L3 cache, 3.2 GHz Bloomfield)
2) 6 GB triple Channel DDR3 (1333 Mhz, 3x2GB)
3) 2x 1GB GDDR5 ATI Radeon HD 5870 Eyefinity (Crossfire)
4) 1 16X BD-ROM/CD/DVD/RW 1 24X CD/DVD/RW

I created two EXT3 partitions (one for /boot and the other for /) and alinux swap partition after leaving 500 GB for my C drive on the HDD. I then booted into linux using the install ISO burned onto a CD. I can see the menu where I get the option to install/run Ubuntu and the option to install in text mode, but when I go ahead,I get the following errors Install Errors After these messages, the monitor goes blank and nothing happens.

I was so excited that finally I can get the newest version of Ubuntu installed on my computer. Yesterday I downloaded the iso file and emptied my F:/ disk, hoping I can install it this morning. Everything was perfect until I met 'swap area'. I thought it was just that the installing program needed some free space during the process. Storage hierarchy, caching, something like that. So I configured my E:/ disk as the 'swap area'.
Bad decision! After everything was done, I rebooted ubuntu, only finding that my E:/ no longer existed!!!! I couldn't believe my eyes, so I rebooted back to Win7. E:/ disk wasn't there any more! Now I have to accept the bitter truth. All my journals, photos, and documents are ruined. My point is that: if something like 'swap area' is not so common sense to everybody, why does it have to be there? And if it will format that disk, why aren't I noticed? Not so long ago, I heard some one claimed that the ubuntu10.10 installing process would be revolutionized, much more user-friendly. Well, this is not what I've expected.

I need to reinstall Ubuntu, problem is, I don't know if I need a new swap area to replace the old one or just check the old one to be formatted. Or do I just leave it as it is and after installation Ubuntu will make use of it? Couldn't decide if this should go in "Installation & Upgrades" or "General Help" since it's a bit of both.

Last night I upgraded to the 10.04 development release, and I am pleased with what I see so far. I ran into a problem, however, with the power manager.I am using an MSI Wind U100.
First, I have lost my battery icon from the notification area. It reappears if I plug in, or unplug my AC adapter.
Second, under, "Power Management Preferences" I have lost my "On Battery Power" tab, leaving only, "On AC Power" and "General"
If I wait about seven minutes, the battery icon will appear in the notification area, but the tab remains lost. The problem is due to update. I have confirmed by installing a fresh 9.10 and upgrading again to 10.04 without making any other changes to system.

I tried to install java runtime in the terminal, and I got to the 'contract acceptance' page, and I couldn't find a way to accept and move forward, so I just closed the Terminal, killing the process. later, I went to the ubuntu software center, and tried to install java runtime using that. the status for the installation remained at 0% and said "waiting for other software managers to quit". so I exited out of software center. then update manager popped up, asking me to update several things, including installing java runtime.so I hit yes, and it said this:E:dpkg was interrupted, you must manually run 'dpkg --configure-a' to correct the problem
so I ran:
sudo dpkg --configure -a
sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get upgrade
[code]....

I was in the process of upgrading my ubuntu system (probably the latest version, it was about a month ago) and my computer froze (it does that on occasion). I have looked around this site, and tried a few things. I assume I am supposed to use the command "sudo dpkg --configure -a" to fix it. The problem is that when I do that, I get the message "dpkg: unable to access dpkg status area: read-only file system". So, what do I do now? I definitely dont want to mess up my system, but I want to fix it.
