General :: NS2 Installation On Fedora 14 Installed On VMware
May 24, 2011
Am new to linux and am trying to install NS2 on Fedora 14 running on VMware, the am following the instructions at: [url], however, on step 5: tclcl installation am receiving the follow error and have tried to look at other posts but no luck.
I have been using VMware Player for some time to host Fedora VMware images on Windows XP. I have been using Fedora 11 and 12 (both 32 and 64 bit) and recently started to use Fedora 13.
I use as a base the images provided by thoughtpolice. http://www.thoughtpolice.co.uk/
I usually install VMware tools and also keep the images updated (yum update) which sometimes changes the kernel.
I have recently had problems with the snapshots not having a network when I restore them. So far I don't have the problem with Fedora 11 and do have it with Fedora 12 (but used not to). I do have it with Fedora 13.
In each case the problem goes away when I uninstall the VMware tools and comes back when I install them again.
One of the symptoms is that SElinux complains about not being able to do something with /var/run/vmware-active-nics.
It looks to me that something is incorrect in the actions being taken when the snapshot is being restored. It does not happen every time and sometimes the network restores itself.
The network can be restored by rebooting the image.
I have a hard drive which already has Windows installed. On a new hard drive, I have Ubuntu Linux installed. Is there anyway to run my already installed Windows using Vmware Player on my Ubuntu setup?
I just installed Red Hat Linux Professional 8.0 in my VMWare, but I do not know how to start X Windows. I have tried to type "startx" on "RUN", but I get error message: Fatal Server error Server already active for display 0. If this server is no longer running, remove tmp/.X0-lock and start again.
I have installed fc12 on my core2due machine, and I have installed the vmware server on it, its rpm is installed successfully with out any error, after that a message is displayed
The installation of VMware Server 2.0.2 for Linux completed successfully. You can decide to remove this software from your system at any time by invoking the following command: "rpm -e VMware-server".
Before running VMware Server for the first time, you need to configure it for your running kernel by invoking the following command: "/usr/bin/vmware-config.pl".
I tried this command and find the this message
[Akram@localhost Downloads]$ su -c "/usr/bin/vmware-config.pl" Password: Making sure services for VMware Server are stopped.
None of the pre-built vmmon modules for VMware Server is suitable for your running kernel. Do you want this program to try to build the vmmon module for your system (you need to have a C compiler installed on your system)? [yes] yes
Using compiler "/usr/bin/gcc". Use environment variable CC to override.
Your kernel was built with "gcc" version "4.4.2", while you are trying to use "/usr/bin/gcc" version "4.4.3". This configuration is not recommended and VMware Server may crash if you'll continue. Please try to use exactly same compiler as one used for building your kernel. Do you want to go with compiler "/usr/bin/gcc" version "4.4.3" anyway? [no] yes
What is the location of the directory of C header files that match your running kernel?[/usr/src/linux/include]
Now it asks me in last lines that "What is the location of Directory of C header files that match your running kernal?"
I want to install debian on vmware workstation 7.1.4 but there's a problem! when I try to install vmware tools or open-vm, it can't complete compile modules of vmware. It is a big problem... I'm trying to access the VMWare console from firefox using the VMWare plugin. The problem is that it doesn't work on Firefox version 3.6.8. So how can I access the console?
When I try to run VMware 7.1.4-385536.x86_64 I see this message: "Before you can run VMware, several modules must be compiled and loaded into the running kernel GCC 4.6.0 GNU C Compiler (gcc) version 4.6.0 was not found etc.." I am running: 2.6.40.3-0.fc15.x86_64
iam new to linux i installed fedora 10 on windows7 ultimate 64bit after intallation the fedora system doesent boot, but windows7 work properly. i instlled fedora 10 in seperate fee partiotion
Actually I found a discussion on this topic. But my problem a bit different from the discussion made over there...The major discussion in that topic is related to the Graphics Issue. But my problem is with the CPU(as my machine says so).... I am posting my screenshot herewith. Please take some time to review it. This would be grateful.
Actually the error says: "This Kernel requires an x86-64 CPU. but only detected i686 CPU. Unable to Boot - please use a kernel appropriate for ur CPU." What does this mean?? My machine has Intel Core 2 Duo t6600 processor. Is Virtualization Playing a role in this issue...??
I just installed VMware server 2.02 on a CentOS 5.4 machine. I tried to run 'vmware': it starts via my web browser (firefox) with xdg-open. Then, firefox displays this:
Connection Interrupted
The connection to the server was reset while the page was loading. The network link was interrupted while negotiating a connection. try again.

I have Vmware Fusion 2.0.6 (196839) running on my MacBook Pro. I installed Fedora 11 on the fusion and it works fine. The only problem that I am having is that when I try to install vmware tools, by runnning ./vmware-install.pl in the terminal, I am prompted with this message: What is the location of the directory of C header files that match your running kernel? [/usr/src/linux/include]
If I press Enter, the same message pops up. I am fairly new to linux, and I am just setting this up so I can set up a web server on this virtual machine for testing purposes.
Installation of VMware Workstation was ok, but at first launch it ask me for path of kernel-headers-2.6.33.3 Why I have different versions of kernel and kernel-headers? How can I make working VMware? Installation of kernel-headers 2.6.33.3 from package-manager seems impossible. What is the path to specify kernel-headers for VMware?
I am an ex-VMS systems programmer/DBA. I have been given the task of installing Oracle 11gR2 on Linux VMware. I have opened a ticket with Oracle on this, but thought I would see if anyone has already done this.
I'm trying to install VMware Tools for the sake of the SVGA driver alone. For the life of me, I cannot get it to work. I'm able to run ./vmware-install.pl but when it comes to configuring it that's where I've run into trouble. I've been trying and trying and trying and trying all morning to get this to work and I'm getting very frustrated now. It keeps asking me, "What is the location of the directory of C header files that match your running kernel?" I've Googled this and read several threads on the issue, tried every conceivable path I think it might be and it keeps coming back again and again saying "The path "<path>" is not valid. Would you like to change it?" WTF!? Can somebody please tell me what the default location of the C header files is under Fedora 14? Geez Louise I just want to install VMware Tools, for Christ's sake! It shouldn't be this difficult. BTW,
Just Completed Installing a fresh fedora 11 on my Dell Laptop. The Hardware says:

I wanted to explore Vmware ESX (Free Download) on my Linux Machine. What Package I need to install on Fedora ?
I've looked through the forums and found that installing openmotif may fix my problem. I tried it but to no avail. Here is my challenge, I'm trying to install Grid Engine on my VMWare fedora installation. I get this dependency error:
Quote: rpm -i sun-sge-bin-linux24-x64-6.2-5.x86_64.rpm error: Failed dependencies: libXm.so.3()(64bit) is needed by sun-sge-bin-linux24-x64-6.2-5.x86_64 libXp.so.6()(64bit) is needed by sun-sge-bin-linux24-x64-6.2-5.x86_64 sun-sge-common = 6.2 is needed by sun-sge-bin-linux24-x64-6.2-5.x86_64
I installed the latest version of openmotif and when I do a search for the two files, there is no libxm.so.3 but libxp.so.6 is there. When I try to install the rpm again I still get the exact same error.

I installed VMware server on my CentOS 5 machine. I had problems getting that working. Then I installed VMware Workstation. That worked fine. Then I tried using VMware server, but apparently VMware Workstation deleted some of VMware Servers files. So, I uninstalled VMware Workstation. Then I tried to reinstall VMware Server, but rpm complains package VMware-server-2.0.2-203138.x86_64 is already installed
I've been trying to run the vmware-config.pl, but I'm getting this message

Then I hit enter, and later get this message

I have installed gcc and the kernel-devel tools, and after installing all that I did an update, but still not getting through with the configuration.
I'm new to Fedora 14, vmware player. After getting Fedora up and running in VMware player. The disk size was 2.7 GB. After three hours of working with it, the disk size has bloated to 4.3 GB. I havent added software to account for the near doubling in size. How do I reduce the size back to 2.7GB range or lower. Im new to Fedora and superuser controls. Im removing more software than adding software. Is this a VMWARE problem or Fedora problem?
I am an administrator of a student lab with 20 PCs. I was thinking of a way to protect those machines in the long run with the presence of some students with destructive behaviour. The most suitable solution to install a Linux OS and use virtual machines to load Microsoft OS. This way once the OS fails I can simply replace the VM with a clone that was previously made.
The point is that most students have no experience with Linux, that's why I need to load the Virtual machine automatically at login and in full-screen view so that The startup process ends up in Microsoft OS through the virtual machine (VMWare based) in Linux platform.
update : I'm using Fedora13 Linux distribution. I believe that part of launching the VM in full-screen is more difficult than automatically launching VMWare at startup. Is there some way I can tell VMWare to launch a particular virtual machine in full-screen when it starts on boot?
I am having trouble getting adobe-flash to properly work on fedora. I have done it before but on a different distribution, and i am migrating to fedora. Here is the output and command that i used for installation of adobe-flash (below). I dont know what else could be causing the problem, note: i restarted firefox after installation accordingly. I tired upload the code and the forums system said
