Ubuntu Installation :: Screen Chantges To Massive Amount Of Colored Static

May 15, 2010

ive been trying to install 10.4 as a fresh install from a LiveCD. I downloaded the 64 bit ISO (I use Win7x64 normally, my processer is a core2 duo 2.2ghz or something along those lines), booted it up, and it starts loading. after a while, the screen chantges to a massive amount of coloured static. I tried reburning the disc, but it made no difference. Im now redownloading the file and the 32bit version too. Is this a problem anyone else has had, and if it is, is there any way to solve it? I would really like to use the 64 bit version.

Fedora :: Massive Amount Of Fonts To Install

Nov 8, 2010

I have read several of the thousands of posts regarding installing of fonts on Fedora. All come to the same conclusion of having to install each font individually. Is there a way to install a massive amount of fonts, ie: over 500 ttf's? And just for kicks in, I need to save it into the folder for all users to have access to, not under my profile.

OpenSUSE Hardware :: Getting Colored Rectangles (static) With 11.3 And Radeon X600 Dual Display?

I just put in an ATI Radeon x600 on my OpenSuse system I loaded last week. The Xorg log shows that it is using the Radeon module (driver). I am seeing colored/static rectangles covering the green wallpaper and when scrolling in Firefox. Does anyone know how to resolve this issue, and is this the driver I should be using?

Fedora Installation :: 10 - Graphic Drivers - Screen Showed Only A Bunch Of Colored Vertical Lines

Feb 10, 2009

I recently downloaded and installed Fedora 11 Alpha. I then installed the Nvidia drivers for my Graphics card (GeForce 7800 GTX). I discovered that Fedora 11 is using a Beta version of Xorg and an incompatible ABI. So, my drivers would not work with Fedora 11 without me dowgrading the Xorg server. I decided to reinstall Fedora 10 instead.

I started the install, and when the installation loaded the generic video drivers, my screen showed only a bunch of colored vertical lines. Fedora 10 doesn't allow me to install in text mode.

Ubuntu :: 9.10 - Colored Screen With Strange Symbols

Feb 13, 2010

I'm using Kubuntu 9.10 and I have a problem with my screen. I use the nvidia driver downloaded from the website, installed manually as I always do. I wanted to update it, but when I press ctr-alt-F1 to go to the console to stop kdm, I cannot see the usual black screen, but only a very strange blinking screen with lines and colours, strange symbols like $ & %. This happens for every F1 until F6, then F7 luckily brings me again on the graphical desktop.

I tried to install the drivers from the "Hardware drivers" manager in Kubuntu, but nothing changed. I don't know if it's an issue related to the kernel or to the driver. But I don't know how to update it without F1 console, and however it's a serious issue because I cannot do anything in case of desktop failure. The kernel is the last officially released (I don't use the proposed repos), that is 2.6.31-19.

Ubuntu Installation :: Ext3-ext4 Upgrade Massive Failure?

Mar 21, 2010

The laptop I regularly use is out of use after having tried to upgrade from ext3 to ext4, following the instructions that can be found at namely, Step 2: Upgrading to Ext4Well, the first step was done without problems, but when I reached "Mount your filesystem", the problems started:When typingsudo mount -t ext4 /dev/XXXX /mntwhat appears is:UNEXPECTED INCONSISTENCY; RUN fsck MANUALLYStupid me, I did nothin but jump to the next step:gksu gedit /mnt/etc/fstabWhere I only got a fully white screen with no written text at all, instead of the menu that should have appeared, as can be seen on that webpage.

However, after running Gparted again, it showed the extension as EXT4, not EXT3, so I thought the system had automatically upgraded. Then I proceeded to boot the system, and this is where the massive failure appearedAfter seeing the Ubuntu logo for a while, the system directs me to a blank screen with the message:Mount of filesystem failed.dc5123-ec01-4438-8bd6-cb85bb080f87A maintenance shell will now be started.CONTROL-D will terminate this shell and re-try.root@hihihi-laptop:#So I type CTRL-D:

mountall start/startingfsck from until-linux-ng 2.16
/dev/sda1: One or more block group descriptor checksums are invalid. FIXED
/dev/sda1: Group descriptor 0 checksum is invalid

Ubuntu Installation :: Upgrading With Least Amount Of Hassle - No Longer Supported Anymore

Aug 3, 2011

I would like to upgrade my linux distro, since I'm using Karmic Koala and it is no longer supported anymore. However, upgrading via the updater always breaks my system, so I want to do a clean install. However, I have a LOT of programs installed in this machine, including a good number of games. Otherwise I think most of my data is neatly confined to my home folder, which I can easily transfer via external hard drive.

How do I get all my programs over, however? Like my PDF printer, for example, or all my games, or Inkscape, or Skype, or any number of things that I have installed. Especially WICD. I can never get my wireless internet to work without WICD. I will make a list of my programs beforehand, just in case something goes wrong, but is there any kind of less painful and time-consuming way to do this than going back and installing every program all over again from scratch?

Ubuntu Multimedia :: Weirdest Sound - Static Buzz, But Only If Mainly Light Screen Colors?

Jan 28, 2011

There's this low monotone electronic buzz coming out of my speakers. But only if the greater part of my screen is using lighter colors! Meaning, if for instance I have the terminal (black) full-screen there is no buzz. If I have it sized over the half of my screen there's a medium buzz. And if I am on the Google Search home page with the browser full screen (most of the screen white) there's a loud buzz. :SAnd it's only if I run the sound through my amplifier. It's not audible if I just use the laptopspeakers. Really, I have no idea even in what direction to start looking.

Ubuntu :: Getting Very Light Colored Text

Jan 5, 2010

I have an annoying text color problem. I don't know what to change to fix it. I have played around with System->Preferences->Appearance to no avail. Here is the problem: I am getting very light colored text so only the currently selected item is readable. The funny thing is that in Nautilus, Firefox, Chrome, Amarok, etc.. it's fine. It seems to be in only some programs in boxes with selectable line items, but also in the area that displays status updates in FileZilla. So I'm not sure how to pinpoint the problem.

What should I do in order to keep my prompt color settings permanently?

Ubuntu :: 10.04: Massive Memory Usage?

Aug 16, 2010

I've been having some problems with Lucid; all my applications seem to be hogging memory like no tomorrow. Within about 15 minutes from booting the system, processes like Google Chrome, Nautilus, Python, Pidgin all start to take seemingly too large amounts of memory.

Chrome is the worst one, easily shooting over 200-300MB of my 2GB's of RAM. I would have reported this as a bug in Chrome itself, but my other applications seem to share the problem to some extent. Also: My colleague has identical hardware and identical versions of Ubuntu / Chrome, while he has no memory problems whatsoever.Currently I am running Chrome, Geany, Pidgin, Thunderbird and FileZilla. For this and itself, Ubuntu now consumes 1.8GB of RAM (that's including 500MB cached).

Ubuntu :: DJVU Converted (Slowly) To (Massive) PDF

Mar 7, 2010

There are quite a few threads in this forum on how to convert a DJVU file into a PDF (among which this thread the instruction of which I followed.) I converted a DJVU file by printing it to a PS file from the Document Viewer. Then I printed again the PS to file into a PDF from that same application. The second phase took more than 24 hours and resulted in a scanned PDF of less than 500 pages with a size of 315 MB! I have many books of more pages which come down to 1 MB only. What happened in the process to make it so damn slow and so inefficient? Is there a good alternative (not ps2pdf because it provides the same result)?
