Fedora Installation :: F12 Installation Media Not Booting - Wrong Kernel
Nov 20, 2009
I downloaded the minimal boot image and installation CDs for F12 i386. On booting either I get the following messages:
Code:
This kernel requires the following features not present on the CPU:
cmov
Unable to boot - please use a kernel appropriate for your CPU
Looks to me like the installation media for i386 doesn't have an i386 kernel! I'm trying to install to an i586 CPU.

Grub use to open an old kernel I tried to edit /boot/grub/menu.lst to open the one I wanted. The edit gets saved but it still opens in the wrong kernel. i.e when edit menu.lst it has no effect. I have tried running sudo grub-update. I've read piles of forum entries to no avail. I am running Jaunty.

Used to run Gentoo, years ago, getting back on the linux train. Anyways, got a new media pc and am having some troubles getting it to function. I am using ImageWriter, an OCZ Rally 4gb flash drive and have tried both HTTP and BitTorrent downloaded copies of 11.3 with the same md5sum check wrong error. What am I doing wrong? Is it because it thinks it is a CD or am I getting bad copies of the ISO? I am so out of practice I can't remember anything about installation anymore and am at a loss.

It points to the old Fedora kernel, and needs to be directed to the pre-installed kernel. What will the new menu entry be after it loads?

Since upgrading to 10.10, I've been unable to boot the 2.6.35 kernels, either -22 or -23. I've been booting with the 2.6.32-25 instead, but I would like to get this resolved.
I can provide more detailed info at request; the output of lshw, if that'll be useful, or details of GRUB.

I downloaded the disc1 iso from [url] and ran it through sha1sum and got 5063ec... (the exact digest is in the virtual console, so I can't copy and paste). But the sum shown in [url] is different, so I removed the iso from my file-system and re-downloaded it. I ran the second download through sha1sum and got the same (wrong) digest as before: 5063ec...
Now, I may not understand fully how sha1 works, but I'm pretty sure if the faulty digest was wrong because of a download error, it would be -very- unlikely that I would get the same wrong digest twice. What is going on here? Is the error server-side or something? Or do I just have terrible luck, or do I not fully understand sha1 sums? Or maybe sha1sum isn't the right command to run?

I have been working on a network problem and have found what the actual problem is. For some reason on boot the netmask for my eth0 is set to be 255.255.255.255 In the network GUI application it is set correctly to 255.255.255.0
I looked in the following files and it is set there correctly too.
/etc/sysconfig/networking/devices/ifcfg-eth0
/etc/sysconfig/networking/profile/default/ifcfg-eth0
/etc/sysconfig/networking-scripts/ifcfg-eth0
If I check the box to "controlled by network-manager" the eth0 interface is started at boot but with a netmask of 255.255.255.255. If I uncheck this box then the interface does not come up at boot and I have to go to the GIU application to start it. It still comes up with the netmask of 255.255.255.255
I have to use ifconfig to set it to the right netmask and then everything works until I reboot.
"ifconfig eth0 192.168.1.65 netmask 255.255.255.0"
How do I get this to work properly? I need it to come up with the correct netmask.

How do i find out if my machine is x32 x64 x86?
Anyway im trying to install kernel headers and devel from the fedora installation disk but i dont know how to get to the cdrom thru terminal as i cant copy the RPMs to desktop by drag n drop or using software installer.

I have a kickstart script that attempts to create user "joeblow" with an encrypted password. The user is created okay, but the password does not seem to "take". After installation is complete, and the system is rebooted, this is the relevant portion of /etc/passwd:
Code:
This is the relevant portion of /etc/shadow:
Code:
Where there are two exclamation points, I would expect the encrypted password (as is the case for the root user, which is also created in the kickstart file).
The relevant line in my kickstart file looks like this:
Code:
That password string, which is 34 characters, is the word "password", encrypted with this command:
Code:
Also in my kickstart file is this line:
Code:
After the install is complete, I reboot and attempt to log in as "joeblow", but no dice. If I log in as root, and manually put the above encrypted password into /etc/shadow for jowblow, I can then log in as joeblow.

When I installed fedora 11 the other day using the live CD it installed the i586 kernel and not the i686, despite the fact that smolt seems to know that that the hardware is i686 (well, actually it's x86, but I'm not going to argue because I forgot to get that one...). Why would it install the i586 one though? (uname -r 2.6.29.6-213.fc11.i586) But more importantly, are there any specific issues which this version can cause that I should be aware of? I can't really be bothered to change it at the moment if there is no real issue with it but I'm not too sure what difference it makes? Is it slower? It seems to know that I have a quad-core processor and seems to use them fine.

I am trying to install Fedora 11 from the full DVD iso on a system using an Intel D945GNT motherboard with a dual-core 3.2GHz Pentium D installed. The installation hangs quite quickly and produces the error "Kernel panic - not syncing"... The previous line is something along the lines of "EIP: [something] intel_i915_configure() [something else]". I have tried many different kernel boot options, such as acpi=off, nolapic, nommconf, and the like, but to no avail. It seems as though this has something to do with a memory mapping conflict due to the allocation of video memory for the on-board graphics chip, but I'm not at all certain about that.

I don't have the greatest network connection so say I install F12 and want to go back and install some stuff I missed first time. It seems that if I use add/remove software that it goes to the repos to download the packages, kind of annoying as I have them on disc. Is there any way to add software from the install discs after the install?

Installed Fedora 14 32-bit with gnome on an older laptop for my son (want to start him early learning multiple OS's). the wireless card is not working (don't know why yet) but in the mean time I wanted to just add/remove software right from the installation media (full DVD). However, when I open system -> administration -> add/remove software, nothing is available. Trying to enable any of the sources listed under software sources tries to use the internet, which I don't have up yet and I don't see any option to add a new source... although I don't know why adding software from the install media would not be an available option by default? So how do I add/remove software from the install media using this add/remove software management tool? I don't want to have to browse the dvd directly for packages, I want to browse by the nice categories and have any dependencies taken care of for me... and the searching capability is nice to

My distro is ClearOS, which is RHEL so I assume this is the right place.I moved my sytem from an old PATA-drive to a bigger SATA. ClearOS uses LVM for the root directory and the swap directory, so this VolumeGroup was moved using lv-commands. I left the old hda drive in for the time being and hda also remained the BIOS start up disk. /boot is at hda2.Now, clearly there are 2 VolGroup00/ LogVol00 's: on hda and sda.
Eventually I wanted to unload my hda. I copied /boot from the hda disk to sda, changed (hd0,1) to (hd0,0) as /boot is in different locations, later found out that I needed to do the same for the location of the splash image and did that as well, but I don't get access to my new VolGroup.I did an /sbin/mkinitrd and a grub-install on the new sda but no luck. I have seen various error messages. The latter one is that grub loader 1.5 is active, giving me a grub prompt.

Just to reiterate on the title, the installation of Fedora 10 i386 (DVD) on a 32bit PC. Is failing on me after the media check (whether or not I do it), so not even making it to the language selection. Currently running a nvidia AGP video card was previously using an ati PCI card but swapping has done little to help.
The only argument that lets me passed this point is noprobe, which then fails a bit later as it can't pick up the install media. I've also tried a live CD which seems to be a bit hit and miss as to whether or not it even loads. It then either fails to even let me run the install to HDD or it comes up some error about failures in python code (Don't have the exact error as the last few times haven't even booted). Below is a couple of errors I get from the standard installer
