Ubuntu Installation :: What Would Happen If Erased - Would The Option To Boot Disappear

Aug 28, 2010

Presuming ubuntu was dual-booting alongside windows with GRUB, and I formatted the ubuntu partition, what would happen at startup; would I still be able to access windows, and would the option to boot ubuntu just disappear?

Ubuntu Installation :: 10.10 - Can't Boot From DVD - Arrow Keys Did Not Change The Boot Option ?

Jan 7, 2011

I am attempting to try install XUbuntu.

I loaded the dvd (one that came with Linux Format Magazine No. 139), changed BIOS to boot from dvd, and then:

I get the welcome screen with the options to boot Ubuntu, KUbuntu, XUbuntu or Boot from First Hard Disk. As I have an older laptop I was going to try XUbuntu. However, the arrow keys did not change the boot option. In fact nothing worked, Tab did not bring up a menu and Enter did not initiate boot.

I tried reloading the dvd, switching off the laptop (no way to shutdown) and restarting but always come up with the same problem.

My DVD drive works fine and the dvd appears not to be faulty since all the info is readable when it is loaded with windows running.

My system details are:

HP compaqnx9000
Mobile Intel Pentium(R) 4-m CPU 2.20 GHz 219GHz 704MB RAM
Optiarc DVD RW AD-7580A
Radeon 1GP 340M

Ubuntu Installation :: Upgrade To 11.04 Erased My Fstab

May 13, 2011

I've been using Ubuntu since 7.04 and I've never had this happen. I was at 10.04 and I downloaded the torrent iso of 11.04 and burned it to a CD and used that to upgrade. I don't know if that was the problem, but doing the upgrade that way erased my fstab. When I tried to recreate it, I was getting errors mapping to the fileshares. Turned out the upgrade uninstalled cifs/smbfs as well. In addition to uninstalling wine. After reinstalling, everything is ok.... so far. This was NOT the smoothest upgrade.

Fedora :: Entire HDD Erased At The Beginning Of Installation?

Mar 3, 2010

I just tried installing Fedora 12 and at the beggining of the install i got this message about my disk which cannot be read until it is initialized, and if i initialize it all data on the disk will be lost. Disk was formated using GUID, and had one HFS+ partition on it. I accidentaly clicked "yes" on that error message, and after realising what I just did (some 2sec later) i pulled out my computer's power cord out.

Now my entire disk is erased, it has no partitions on it, and all data is lost...

How do i retrieve my data from the erased disk, and why did Fedora want to do this to my disk?

Ubuntu Installation :: Dual Boot Option Doesn't Appear In Installation / Solve This?

Dec 30, 2010

I have a MSI a6000 Laptop (that has given me a lot of problems installing Ubuntu.

I finally had to run Ubuntu from a CD in nomodeset

Then when I go to install Ubuntu the only options it gives (regarding my harddrive) are to format my whole hardrive or do the partitioning. I have seen screenshots though where there is a third option on the same page to install ubuntu alongside a prior OS and dual boot.

Does anyone know why the "install alongside a prior OS (dual boot)" option doesn't show up?

I am trying to install Ubuntu 10.04 LTS on a Windows XP Media Centre Edition system. On the Step 4 of the installation which usually gives you the option to partition the disk but it only gives me the option to Erase the entire disk or specify partition manually, although this also doesn't allow anything other than totally erasing the disk. I'd ideally like to keep my Windows and I have installed Ubuntu before (but 9.10) on a different system.

Ubuntu Installation :: BIOS Does Not Have USB Boot Option

Jun 9, 2010

I was wondering to restore on old laptop to working order. This laptop is an old early 2000's Sony Viao, which I found in the trash. Still powers on, and can boot the latest Ubuntu LiveCD. The issue is that it did not have a harddrive in it, and I really do not want to shell out money for a drive for a laptop this old, but would still like to bring it back into service as a thin client or general purpose web/email terminal. The BIOS does NOT have a USB boot option, and every tutorial I have seen requires that in order to boot Ubuntu from a USB stick (which is what I do have). What I am wondering is, is there any way to just keep the LiveCD in the drive and use that to boot the kernel, etc, and then have it look for the rest of the filesystem on the USB stick?

Can anybody give me a step by step guide on how to do this please?? The simplest the better because I am not too hot on Ubuntu, unfortunately.

Ubuntu Installation :: No Boot Option For Windows 7

Dec 17, 2010

I'm in exactly the same sticky state. Was running my new Ubuntu 10.10 build alongside my original Windows 7 partition, but now the Windows 7 boot option has disappeared following a trip to the update manager Tried the Update Grub2 command to no avail. (e.g. sudo update-grub) What is weird is that I now have two Ubuntu boot options i.e.

"Ubuntu, with linux 2.6.35-23-generic"
"Ubuntu, with linux 2.6.35-23-generic" (Recovery Mode)
"Ubuntu, with linux 2.6.35-22-generic"
"Ubuntu, with linux 2.6.35-22-generic" (Recovery Mode)
"Memtest86+"

I ran the same boot_info_script from as per a similar post (and above) in the hope you wizened peeps may see something I clearly can't. p.s. I'm as noob as they come and fearful of most areas of linux at this point.

Ubuntu Installation :: No Dual Boot Install Option

Dec 28, 2010

No option to install alongside another OS. I have Win7 Starter on this new netbook and need to install Ubuntu 10.10 netbook addition. Disk Management shows 4 partitions, one is C:, one is D:, and two I've never seen before they're so small. Is it safe to delete these or do they have a purpose for the current Win OS? I would gladly install the 10.10 to my D: drive which seems to be SDA2, the 131GB partition. What's the right sequence of partitioning and formatting to give Ubuntu the full install it needs manually? And what needs to be taken care of for a Swap drive?

Ubuntu Installation :: Does Not Give The Option To Boot To Windows

May 29, 2011

I unplugged the Windows drive, during the installation of Ubuntu 9 (to make things easier). 2 separate drives. When installation was complete, I plugged the other drive back in (now both are plugged in). I went to the BIOS and made sure the Linux drive was the set to boot before the windows drive. The only thing that comes before that of course is the cd drive

CD-0
HDD-1 (linux)
HDD-0 (windows)

I booted into linux after this and ran 'sudo update-grub'. The cmd was successful. However, when rebooting it does not give me the option to boot to windows. Why not? PS. If I go to Places (under GNOME bar), Then I can see (and mount) the windows drive. So it is accessible.

Debian :: Mount Sshfs At Startup - Get Mount For UserA To Happen On Boot

Mar 18, 2011

I am struggling with getting an sshfs mount mounted on system boot. I have a script that mounts the sshfs for "userA". When userA runs the script all is well - user A can access the remote filesystem, root user can't see it as expected. The basic command is: sshfs userA@remote host:/home/userA /home/userA/mountdir -p 21212 -o password_stdin < passwordfile. I can prepend the sshfs command in the script with su - userA -c and when I run this script logged in as root all is well, userA has access and all is well. If I then put this script in /etc/init.d and reference it properly in the rc. directories the mount doesn't happen. If I prepend the sshfs command with sudo, same thing. Logged in as root I can run the script and UserA has access. Run the script in /etc/init.d during startup and the mount doesn't happen. Echoing text to a log file shows that the script is being executed but no mount happens.
