I have just installed Ubuntu 10.04 where kernel 2.6.32-30-generic-pae is default. Also installed the latest stable kernel version 2.6.38.3
I need to have the latest kernel version in boot screen without affecting the older. What are all things I need to update ?
Got it on a CD and was using it as "Try Ubuntu" instead of installing it for good (I still wanted to see if there were memory issues or HDD issues with my desktop, before I installed it for good).Anyway, I would shut down the pc after about 2 or 3 days and redo the CD install (try ubuntu option) again and add all the plugins etc.Kids used this for playing some games on friv or nickjr.The real issue - of late, when I try to start the PC and boot from the CD, I am getting a LOGIN screen instead of the regular option to install from CD or Try the Ubuntu.

Now my kernel has automatically been updated to 2.6.35-22.41 or something. The option to boot from the new kernel does not appear. As you might imagine, I want to do that. My old bootloader updated this stuff automatically.
I'm running Squeeze and I've been running into the r8169 hang problem (see [url]for example). A temporary (until the driver foibles in the kernel are resolved) solution that seems to be working for many people is passing the boot option "pcie_aspm=off" to the kernel.
Apparently, either I don't understand grub2 at all or my kernel doesn't like me very much. I put the option in grub.cfg like so:
However, it appears that the kernel, for whatever reason, is either not being given this boot option or it's not interpreting it correctly. When I run lspci -vv I get this for my r8169 ethernet card:

I need to install any version of Debian with the Debian Kernel version 2.6.22-3-686. I don't mind what version of Debian it is, I just need it to have this specific kernel! Debian Etch comes with 2.6.18-4-686 and Lenny comes with 2.6.26-2-686 so the kernel I need is obviously somewhere in between.
I have tried using the following commands to see if kernel 2.6.22-3-686 is available for download via the apt-get method in both Debian Etch and Lenny but it is not...

So does anyone know where/how I can download specific kernels and install them for use? I have a computer sitting next to me that has multiple kernels as an option on boot, and they all boot into the same system, however I do not know the person who set up the computer so cannot ask them how they did it
Is it possible using YAST to make it possible to be given the option to boot the previous kernel when a new one is installed during an update?

When that option is selected the screen changes colour for 2 seconds and then reverts to the GRUB menu. Ubuntu boots fine.I downloaded the Boot Info Script and ran it, the results are

Since ages my lilo.conf has two entries for slackware. One for runlevel 3 and one for runlevel 4.

Since the upgrade this is no more possible because I get a kernel panic as soon as udevadm trigger is called. The stack says something about an unknown boot option. Because that i removed the append lines from my lilo.conf and i was able to boot the system. The crash happens when udev is called from within the ramdisk and afterwards. I tried both.
My question is now. Is this a bug in udev or expected? I have this setup since at least 5 years and had never problems with that. What do I have to do to be able to select the runlevel at boot time?

I loaded the dvd (one that came with Linux Format Magazine No. 139), changed BIOS to boot from dvd, and then:
I get the welcome screen with the options to boot Ubuntu, KUbuntu, XUbuntu or Boot from First Hard Disk. As I have an older laptop I was going to try XUbuntu. However, the arrow keys did not change the boot option. In fact nothing worked, Tab did not bring up a menu and Enter did not initiate boot.
I tried reloading the dvd, switching off the laptop (no way to shutdown) and restarting but always come up with the same problem.
My DVD drive works fine and the dvd appears not to be faulty since all the info is readable when it is loaded with windows running.

I am trying to install Lucid on my Alienware M17x laptop.I loaded the install to my thumb drive and boot to my thumb drive but after the initial option screen, I see nothing. If I choose to run Ubuntu from the thumb drive, the screen goes blank and after a few seconds I hear the sound, but no Ubuntu on my screen.Am I missing some unspoken prep steps?

I have a standard F15 installation with Gnome 3 from the live CD. I got bored and decided to play with a few other WMs and DEs. I installed KDE-base, but KDE does not appear as an option at login. Is there something else I need to install? XFCE, Openbox, and Classic Gnome with Compiz all appear in the menu. KDE does not.

View 1 Replies View RelatedI am trying to use a F14 network install CD to upgrade on an old HP Pavilion 9695C (Athalon 850MHz, nVidia NV5 RIVA TNT2/TNT2 Pro AGP) with F12 on it. This same disk successfully upgraded a HP Omnibook 6000 with F12. I boot with the network install CD and get the initial menu to select to install/upgrade, install using basic video driver, etc. After selecting either upgrade or basic video driver install, I see the CD being read, then nothing, just a blank screen. I had a similar problem with F12 network install on this machine. So I tried adding "vga=0x318 nomodeset" to the upgrade boot options. The only difference is a quick flash on the screen, then a blinking "underscore character" cursor. The "install using basic video driver" has the same result.
Have also tried:linux nofb
vga=791 [nomodeset]
vga=1 [nomodeset]
xdriver=nv nomodeset
xdriver=vesa nomodeset
However, I always end up with a blank screen or blank screen with blinking underscore cursor. I know this particular AGP has problems with the nouveau driver. On F12 I had to force it to use the nv driver. I submitted a bug but there was no interest on it as this was F12 and F13 was the latest at the time. I did try to upgrade to F13, but ran into this same problem. I was hoping F14 would be better.
I have a MSI a6000 Laptop (that has given me a lot of problems installing Ubuntu.
I finally had to run Ubuntu from a CD in nomodeset
Then when I go to install Ubuntu the only options it gives (regarding my harddrive) are to format my whole hardrive or do the partitioning. I have seen screenshots though where there is a third option on the same page to install ubuntu alongside a prior OS and dual boot.
Does anyone know why the "install alongside a prior OS (dual boot)" option doesn't show up?
I am trying to install Ubuntu 10.04 LTS on a Windows XP Media Centre Edition system.On the Step 4 of the installation which usually gives you the option to partition the disk but it only gives me the option to Erase the entire disk or specify partition manually, although this also doesn't allow anything other than totally erasing the disk. I'd ideally like to keep my Windows and I have installed Ubuntu before (but 9.10) on a different system.

But upon restarting, i wasnt give the option to boot ubuntu. It just keeps loading windows. I went back to my bios and chose to boot from both hd's, but nothing is happening. With the hd with ubuntu on it, it wont load up.

View 2 Replies View RelatedI was wondering to restore on old laptop to working order. This laptop is an old early 2000's Sony Viao, which I found in the trash. Still powers on, and can boot the latest Ubuntu LiveCD. The issue is that it did not have a harddrive in it, and I really do not want to shell out money for a drive for a laptop this old, but would still like to bring it back into service as a thin client or general purpose web/email terminal. The BIOS does NOT have a USB boot option, and every tutorial I have seen requires that in order to boot Ubuntu from a USB stick (which is what I do have). What I am wondering is, is there any way to just keep the LiveCD in the drive and use that to boot the kernel, etc, and then have it look for the rest of the filesystem on the USB stick?

So I created a partition for it, and install XP onto it, but now it now longer gives me the option to choose between Ubuntu or XP. I know I need to reinstall GRUB but I am not sure on how to do it. Can anybody give me a step by step guide on how to do this please?? The simplest the better because I am not too hot on Ubuntu, unfortunately.

I used unetbootin to create my bootable usb with 10.10 for netbook. I am trying to install ubuntu on my brand new fresh out of the box Asus Eee PC 1018P but the problem is when I hit esc during the boot to get to bios to select boot from usb, the usb doesn't show up as an option. I also tried hitting f2 and making it an option to boot from usb but that doesn't seem to work either.
View 3 Replies View RelatedI installed ubuntu on my v13 (SU7300 model, not the ubuntu model) using unetbootin.Installation was successful, but when I restart, the boot loader only gives me the option of starting Windows.I can still use unetbootin until I start windows and uninstall it. After that, if I restart, the only OS option to boot from is Windows.
NOTE: I installed 9.10 using frugal more (no cd, no usb, but rather live from hard drive.)
No option to install alongside another OS. I have Win7 Starter on this new netbook and need to install Ubuntu 10.10 netbook addition. Disk Management shows 4 partitions, one is C:, one is D:, and two I've never seen before they're so small. Is it safe to delete these or do they have a purpose for the current Win OS? I would gladly install the 10.10 to my D: drive which seems to be SDA2, the 131GB partition. What's the right sequence of partitioning and formatting to give Ubuntu the full install it needs manually? And what needs to be taken care of for a Swap drive?

I gave up on XP - not the place for long sob stories - and decided to try Ubuntu. I know nothing, so I chose the 10.04.1 because it said stable... made a CD, took it to the problem computer, tried several times to load, then noticed that "Wubi" loaded from windows. I hunted down a 10.04.1 Wubi, and it seemed to read rather well. No error messages, told me to remove the disc. I did, told me to reboot. I chose ubuntu and it froze with the words :

View 7 Replies View RelatedI unplugged the Windows drive, during the installation of Ubuntu 9 (to make things easier). 2 separate drives. When installation was complete, I plugged the other drive back in (now both are plugged in). I went to the BIOS and made sure the Linux drive was the set to boot before the windows drive. The only thing that comes before that of course is the cd drive

I booted into linux after this and ran 'sudo update-grub'. The cmd was successful. However, when rebooting it does not give me the option to boot to windows. Why not? PS. If I go to Places (under GNOME bar), Then I can see (and mount) the windows drive. So it is accessible.
