I have install ubuntu and windows in the same computer in their own partition. I think that I have remove something while I was reinstalling some wireless stuff using synaptic. When I launch the computer I get the dual booting but only with memory test and windows. I have the ubuntu installation cd. What can I do to get back the dual booting with the facility to launch ubuntu.

View 1 Replies View RelatedI installed 11.04 after Windows 7. when the GRUB boot menu starts up there is an option for Win 7 boot but it will not boot windows. When that option is selected the screen changes colour for 2 seconds and then reverts to the GRUB menu. Ubuntu boots fine.I downloaded the Boot Info Script and ran it, the results are

I just installed ubuntu 11.04 via wubi. the installation appears to have gone well but ubuntu doesnt appear as an OS choice when i boot up.
Its not a timeout issue as it is set to 30sec and i can see my other options (windows and a recovery option). the only thing i can think of is that my computer has a separate partition set up for recovery and i think that is screwing things up.

My only guess is that since the recovery partition is the first partition that its causing problems.

No option to install alongside another OS. I have Win7 Starter on this new netbook and need to install Ubuntu 10.10 netbook addition. Disk Management shows 4 partitions, one is C:, one is D:, and two I've never seen before they're so small. Is it safe to delete these or do they have a purpose for the current Win OS? I would gladly install the 10.10 to my D: drive which seems to be SDA2, the 131GB partition. What's the right sequence of partitioning and formatting to give Ubuntu the full install it needs manually? And what needs to be taken care of for a Swap drive?

But when I try the other partitions i get "Unknown file system" or when I try to boot into the other ntfs drive, I get "BOOTMBR missing", but yet it does not mean Windows, because i can boot that just fine. Then when I go to install Ubuntu the only options it gives (regarding my harddrive) are to format my whole hardrive or do the partitioning. I have seen screenshots though where there is a third option on the same page to install ubuntu alongside a prior OS and dual boot.
Does anyone know why the "install alongside a prior OS (dual boot)" option doesn't show up?
I've installed Windows 7 Ultimate on a notebook which previously ran Vista. No problems there.I've now installed Ubuntu (now updated to 10.04)so that it can boot to either OS.
It all works fine and when I first power up, I get a screen which invites me to select the OS I want to use. There are however two problems:
1) it defaults to Ubuntu (whereas I would prefer it to default to Windows 7 (it's a work laptop and most of the applications are Windows-specific),
2) the list of choices is getting increasingly complex with an expanding list of choices (with each major update of Ubuntu adding more); it even seems to include an option to go back to Vista!As long as I move down the list and make the right selection quite speedily, I get to where I want to be (though, as I say, I would like to change the default option).Is there any way I can edit/shorten this list without damaging the functionality and how can I change that default?
I've installed Lubuntu alongside my existing Windows XP installation. The menu came up on boot allowing me to boot into either Lubuntu or XP. But, after I install all the Lubuntu updates and restart, the option to boot into XP is gone. The boot menu comes up, but no XP option. I reinstalled Lubuntu again with the same results: after the updates, no XP option. I'm thinking I will reinstall Lubuntu again, and before I run the updates, I will make a copy of grub.cfg for later reference so I can add the XP section in again- am I on the right track here?

Initially had windows xp in my system. Picked up on free partition (*it was not a primary partition*) and installed Debian from CD. The installation went fine. Towards end of installation the grub install ran detected windows xp presence and I continued with the install. End of install, prompted that the system would reboot.
However on reboot, I wasnt presented when boot option ( windows xp vs debian) but my windows xp directly got booted. How to get this boot option.
I have a /boot partition, and the online update process has downloaded the upgrade to /boot/upgrade. The problem is that grub is actually booting from a directory /boot which is in the root partition, but is invisible once the machine has booted, because the /boot partition is mounted over it. The result of all this is that the upgrade option does not appear in the boot menu, because that option has been inserted in the menu.lst (or grub.conf) in the /boot partition. is it ok for me to run:grub-install /dev/sda4(that's the device that contains the /boot partition where the upgrade menu option and data). Also, do I need the --root-directory option, given that the boot directory is the root directory of that partition.
View 3 Replies View RelatedI have the same problem with an Ubuntu 10.04 live CD. Whenever I attempt to boot (Lu|U)buntu from a live CD/USB, on most computers. it works just fine. However, on two computers, the live media starts off just fine with the main menu (Try Ubuntu without installing, etc.), then, when I select any option except 'Boot from First Hard Disk', after a few seconds, the CD stops spinning or the USB loses power. I'm convinced it's not a problem from the media, since it works perfectly fine on some computers.

Have just installed 9.10, again, many failed attempts previously.Cannot get to boot up and show menu on dual boot with Vista initially,However when I delete the grubenv file the system boots ok and works fine.But does not show the grub menu to choose boot up choices.Got the information to delete the file on some posts elsewhere about booting problem, and tried a longshot and got into Ubuntu for the first time from trying to install now for 3 months!The problem is the file grubenv is created each time so on subsequent boot ups the sytem fails to boot again.The Grub version is 1.97 beta 4, most up to date for Karmic I think, I have seen a version 1.98 but dont think its for Karmic?

I bought a new NVidia Asus EN210 for my HTPC, but I can't get Ubuntu to install.
First I made a live USB disk of 10.10 with Unetbootin and when I choose the option of "try Ubuntu" it starts loading and then just hangs, still showing the menu of boot options. After this I tried Xubuntu on a USB disk. This one also starts loading but then just fails. I also tried XBMC Live. This one does show the Ubuntu 10.04 screen but then just shows a black screen.
After this I found a CD with Ubuntu 10.04, I think or it is 10.10, laying around in my room. I booted it and once I select an option from the install menu it starts to load, but then just gives a black screen with a flashing "-" sign.
The strange thing is, once I pop in the old video card, which is an ATI HD4350, my Ubuntu 10.10 Live CD on USB disk does work and it does get past the menu of boot options (in my second paragraph I describe how this isn't the case with Ubuntu 10.10 combined with my NVidia card).
Problem is that Ubuntu installation program doesn't want to "offer" Dual-Boot option on my main HDD. Only format option and manual partitioning.
View 1 Replies View RelatedA while ago I messed up my Ubuntu installation so I decided to boot the install from the disc again and overwrite it. It turns out the installation disc does not give you the option to replace a current Ubuntu installation so I was forced to take more space out of my windows [vista] installation. This means I now have 1 ruined Lucid Ubuntu OS, 1 Working Lucid Ubuntu OS and a windows Vista OS system. Is it safe to delete my ruined Ubuntu from inside vista? Is it possible to overwrite my Ubuntu installations? How can I delete them both and then install Lucid again?
I want to know this now as Maverick Meerkat will be released on Sunday and I want to install that in a clean installation without deleting my vista installation. I do not have the Vista installation disc because Vista came pre-installed. I am not willing to buy anything.
I have rebuilt my laptop to a dual boot of Ubuntu 10.10 and Windows 7 - if only iTunes would work under wine I wouldn't even have to worry about Windows, but that is the penalty for using an Apple iPod!
Anyway how do I go about about editing the boot options menu? Following the kernel upgrade in the Ubuntu updates I now have two entries for Ubuntu and would like to just tidy it up.
If it is risky let me know because I have the systems working just nice, and really wouldn't want to trash them just for something cosmetic.
I have multiple drives on my system and I decided to put Ubuntu on my main 1TB hard drive. I install 9.10 on my drive and it partitions half of it to Ubuntu and install is successful. Well, on reboot I get nothing. I switch to my secondary drive with windows on it already and the dual boot menu appears? Apparently it installs in on SATA1 and not the drive selected as boot in the BIOS. I decided to leave it this way until recently I needed to use the secondary drive on my other rigs failing hard drive. So, how do I get grub on the 1TB hard drive? I ran windows 7 BOOTREC files and recovered the Windows boot, but I couldn't get Ubuntu to recover with live CD nor the GRUB online help didn't work. Is there a simple way to get my dual boot menu back?

I need a suggestion on setting up a dual boot menu for my setup. I have two hard drives one with WinXP and a second one with CentOS 5.3 installed. I basically moved the hard drive from another identical machine to this one and so I want to setup a boot menu to access either windows or Linux. CentOS already has grub on it.
What is the simplest method of setting up the dual boot menu? I would like something which is easy to administer which I can just ghost over either the Linux drive or Windows drive or disconnect either and have either boot just fine. I don't ask for much do I?
If I have to go through a little process after ghosting over one or the other drives that would probably be ok. We get updated images for this machine and replace the image on the drives with new images, although Linux shouldn't be reimaged, just windows. So the Linux drive (2nd drive) should not be touched normally.
