Ubuntu Installation :: Stick With LTS Versus Renewal Of System By Upgrading

Jan 22, 2010

I am wondering, what are the merits of staying with an LTS release versus the renewal of the system by upgrading to a new release? Certainly, staying with an LTS release isn't going to be more or less dangerous than upgrading to a new release that specifically addresses security issues. With Lucid Lynx coming up this spring, should I try sticking it out until the LTS after Lynx, or keep upgrading regularly?

Ubuntu :: LTS 10.4 Versus Upgrading To Newer Versions

Nov 2, 2010

currently my laptops is running 10.10 I haven't been having any problems so far nor I felt any improvement (functionality wise) over 10.4 . But today I came across a small problem: I went to Cilenerra's website - a Powerful video editing software. I saw that they have a version for 10.4 but not for 10.10 yet. Now I'm unable to get that software.

1. My question is, will I be encountering this type incompatibility issues in the future if I keep getting the latest Ubuntu distros?

2. What if I choose to install 10.4 LTS and stick with it long term? Will I start getting incompatibility issues after a year or so?

3. Will the 10.4 get more and more stable and responsive with newer updates until the new LTS?

EDIT: and if you're wondering, I tried installing the repository of Cinelerra, but the Ubuntu Software Centre kept telling me that there's no version available for my OS.

Ubuntu Installation :: Ethernet Connection & DHCP Renewal?

If I then unplug the ethernet from the switch and then replug it in, eth0 will get a steady connection, at which point I have to run the following command to get everything working.

Code:
sudo dhclient eth0
After running the command I have no issues with the ethernet connection.

Ubuntu Installation :: Full System On USB Stick With Installer Option

Jul 20, 2010

I would like to make a bootable Ubuntu system on a USB stick from a full install, so I can update the packages/kernel etc, and I would also like to have the ability to Install ubuntu from the USB stick onto other computers. What package allows you to run the installer that is found on the LiveCD?

Also, is it possible to have a Ubuntu installer that uses updated packages rather than the LiveCD so they are current when installed rather than the release packages to save on the download/updating time?

I only have a 11.1 distro cd, in which I had installed. I want to upgrade to 11.2 since that should be the easiest, from then I think i can figure out how to upgrade from 11.4. I currently do not have any cd's or a usb flash drive to mount the iso image onto. I've read through the wiki looking for a solution, but even with updating my repos i still haven't found the answer.

Ubuntu Installation :: Upgrading To 10.04 - Broken System?

Jun 19, 2010

I avoided upgrading to 10.04 when it was initially released because I couldn't afford for anything to go wrong with my computer around exam time. Sure enough, when I decided to upgrade today, the process got about halfway through and then gave me an error and left me with an unbootable system except in a recovery terminal.

In this terminal I discovered that most of the packages the upgrade wanted to configure depended in some way on shared-mime-info or desktop-file-utils. Configuring these with dpkg --configure gives me an error along the lines of:

Code:
undefined symbol: g_malloc0_n and an error code of 127. So, dpkg leaves those packages and consequently can't configure many of the subsequent packages in the dist-upgrade.

Ubuntu Installation :: Upgrading From 8.04 To 10.4 LTS - System Stuck

Apr 7, 2011

I got a really bad virus on my main computer and decided I should just install Ubuntu like I previously had installed on a laptop. Anyway, I used an old 7.10 install disk that I usually use and I upgraded from 7.10 to 8.4 LTS (that went off without a hitch), but when I upgraded from 8.4 LTS to 10.4LTS the install hung up at one point. The system was stuck 7 minutes from completion trying to set up the rsyslog. I left the dialog box up for 3 hours to no avail. I proceeded to reformat the drive to try again and it ended the same way. I currently have the system with the install dialog up and stopped at the setting up of the rsyslog.
Here is a picture of the install window:

If I run in Rescue Mode it Reports (The installer could not find any partitions, so you will not be able to mount a root file system. This may be caused by the Kernel failing to detect your hard disk drive or failing to read the partition table, or the disk may be unpartitioned. Feb 1, 2011

I tried to upgrade to Maverick (server version) usingsudo do-release-upgradeAll went well, but on the first reboot after the installation the PC hangs with grub prompt:error: the symbol grub_xputs not foundI guess it has something to do with my RAID1 setup:sda1/sdb1..RAID1, bootable (system partition, 20 GB)sdc1 ....swap partition sda2/sdb2/sdc2 ... RAID5 (data partition, 3 TB)I made a bootable (using UNetbootin) USB pen drive with 10.10 desktop on it and booted into this desktop version. Aftermdadm --assemble --scanI could successfully access (and mount) my RAID1 and RAID5 drives. However, the system itself does not boot.

after only having mounted /dev/md0 and browsed in the contents, the boot behavior has changed: now the PC does not end up in the grub prompt "the symbol grub_xputs not found", but instead a blank black screen with a blinking cursor left top is shown. Keyboard: no reaction (I tried Enter, Esc, any keys ... no reaction, just a blinking cursor). Then, I tried:

boot into USB pen drive 10.10 desktop
mdadm --assemble --scan ... result: /dev/md0 is available (the RAID1 of sda1 and sdb1)
mount /dev/md0 /mnt/md0

Ubuntu Installation :: System Half Is In English And Half In Another Language After Upgrading To 10.04

May 27, 2010

I just upgraded from 9.04 to 10.04 and so far I have those problems:

1. Before, everything in my system was in English. Now, half is in English, half in another language (PCManFM, some menus etc). I tried setting up Language Support but it changes nothing.

2. Cursor themes work only when hovering the mouse over "X" buttons in the right top corner of the window. As soon as I move the mouse somewhere else, it goes back to default cursor theme, even though I tried selecting 5 different themes - same result.

4. Hibernation don't work anymore. s2disk saves image to disk and then it resumes it but computer stops on text message along the lines of "Resume completed successfully".

5. Changing volume with keyboard shotcuts no longer works.

6. Smplayer does not display picture anymore when playing movies. The view is just empty. I can only hear the soundtrack. It is using XV filter.

7. PCmanFM that used to worked flawlessly, now after going into 1 or 2 subdirectories stops reacting to clicks on file/folder list. Need to open new instance to be able to do anything and this again would become unusable after visiting 1-2 folders.

Ubuntu Installation :: VHD Versus Real Partitioning

Nov 9, 2010

I would like to know if using VHD (Virtual Hard Drive) is a better method instead of resizing Hard Disks / partitioning etc....What I was thinking of is a method whereby I creeate a VHD file and link it to Windows 7 Boot Loader .. I am actually not in favour of either Virtual Box or VmWare as I have to load into an OS and launch it and I dont personally like the "host" --"guest" way of functioning wherein you have to keep toggling ...Also you dont get a real feel of a virtualized Application or Distro....

It is safe , but you cant test the real potential of a distro in terms of Hardware recognition ..It is a shadow of some existing OS whiin which resources are shared.. For instance my wireless adapter is used as a "wired" connection in Virtual Box.i dont know if the distro per se recognises my wireless. Also RAM is shared so speed is reduced.. So I read that in Win 7 you can create a VHD and also use BCD edit to invoke it at bootup...I am thinking it is in the same manner as a Virtual Box /Vmware way of functioning but with advantages like

1. Quicker bootup
2. Ease of Use ( no need for partition hassle)..Just create / delete HD files
3. Full Hardware resource utilization
4. Independent functioning
5. Dynamic storage

1. 2 TB limitation for files...But that is way too much for me!! I hardly use even 40 GB! Is this advisable or is there a basic flaw in my assumption?....I can have one permanent OS - either Linux or Win 7 and operate my system without bothering about file systems , resize etc

General :: Knoppix Versus Ubuntu Installation CD

Feb 12, 2010

On my ms windows machine, the OS went out of order, and I wanted to salvage all my pictures, and decided to use a live CD and move some of my media files to my mp3 player... its storage is 8 gigabytes I tried a latest Knoppix first, it did not provide me a nice GUI. Instead, it provide me with a humble looking, less than friendly, menu-based interface which I gave up on in about 3 minutes. I was thinking for a minute, and when I tried to install Ubuntu in the past, one of the options I was provided when I ran the Ubuntu installation CD was "Try Ubuntu without installing it" and I thought it meant the Ubuntu installation CD could also be used a live CD. And I put together an Ubuntu CD and attempted to use it as a live CD! ah man it was beautiful. It even recognized the video card on my machine. I am never going back to knoppix. From now on, when someone ever mentions Knoppix to me, my response will be, "what is Knoppix?"
