so, I was just upgrading to the new release of Ubuntu and didn`t notice that laptop was running on battery, then it was switched off.Now I can open Ubuntu system, can`t reach to login page.the other two systems are ok, XP and Pardus.how do you think I can recover ubuntu?
View 4 RepliesI've just upgraded to Natty. During the upgrade no errors showed. However, when I now boot ubuntu (either recovery mode or normal), the boot process hangs at:
'checking battery state'
I searched for similair problems in this forum, but the solutions in other posts(sudo apt-get update & upgrade etc.) did not help. I'm not sure if it is related or important, but when it hangs, it also shows something like:
'starting automatic crash reporter [fail]'
'not starting jetty'
'saned disabled'
(I can't copy there of course, so it is probably not exactly like this, or in this order...) What can I do to get my ubuntu boot again?
I avoided upgrading to 10.04 when it was initially released because I couldn't afford for anything to go wrong with my computer around exam time. Sure enough, when I decided to upgrade today, the process got about halfway through and then gave me an error and left me with an unbootable system except in a recovery terminal.
In this terminal I discovered that most of the packages the upgrade wanted to configure depended in some way on shared-mime-info or desktop-file-utils. Configuring these with dpkg --configure gives me an error along the lines of:

undefined symbol: g_malloc0_n and an error code of 127. So, dpkg leaves those packages and consequently can't configure many of the subsequent packages in the dist-upgrade.
Can anyone explain to me how I can auto block my Ubuntu system from upgrading to 10 from 9?
View 3 Replies View RelatedI got a really bad virus on my main computer and decided I should just install Ubuntu like I previously had installed on a laptop. Anyway, I used an old 7.10 install disk that I usually use and I upgraded from 7.10 to 8.4 LTS (that went off without a hitch), but when I upgraded from 8.4 LTS to 10.4LTS the install hung up at one point. The system was stuck 7 minutes from completion trying to set up the rsyslog. I left the dialog box up for 3 hours to no avail. I proceeded to reformat the drive to try again and it ended the same way. I currently have the system with the install dialog up and stopped at the setting up of the rsyslog.

After upgrading from 9.10 to 10.04 my System no longer boots. I had a Dual-Boot System. On Boot I get - "error : the symbol 'grub_puts_' not found grub rescue> (prompt):
If I run 'insmode /boot/grub/normal.mod' (I get the same error)
If I run 'insmode /boot/grub/ext2.mod' (I get 'The symbol 'grub_xasprinf' not found)
If I run ls /boot (The Kernel File Names look Ok)
If I run in Rescue Mode it Reports (The installer could not find any partitions, so you will not be able to mount a root file system. This may be caused by the Kernel failing to detect your hard disk drive or failing to read the partition table, or the disk may be unpartitioned. If you wish, you may investigate this from a shell in the installer environment.) I ran the recommended reporting script and got the following output:-

This is a 64bit system, & if I can provide any other info about it, just ask.I've searched this forum for the help I'm looking for, but I have not yet seen an acceptable answer. If this has glitches, or is too complicated, I won't even bother....3.5 is fine for now, but it would be nice to upgrade.

Certainly, staying with an LTS release isn't going to be more or less dangerous than upgrading to a new release that specifically addresses security issues. With Lucid Lynx coming up this spring, should I try sticking it out until the LTS after Lynx, or keep upgrading regularly?
View 9 Replies View Relatedi used to use ubuntu 9.04 on my lap compaq 515, it worked well. But on upgrading to the higher versions(9.10, 10.04) the system failed to boot. Whenever i tried to install, the laptop would freeze and just show a blank screen. The Configuration of my system is below
Processor-AMD Athlon X2 64-bit
RAM- 1.7Gb
HDD- 150Gb
Graphics Card-ATI Radeon 3200 HD Graphics (256MB)
Is the problem actually with the operating system?. Does the new versions of ubuntu support this configuration or not?

View 4 Replies View RelatedI just upgraded from 9.04 to 10.04 and so far I have those problems:
1. Before, everything in my system was in English. Now, half is in English, half in another language (PCManFM, some menus etc). I tried setting up Language Support but it changes nothing.
2. Cursor themes work only when hovering the mouse over "X" buttons in the right top corner of the window. As soon as I move the mouse somewhere else, it goes back to default cursor theme, even though I tried selecting 5 different themes - same result.
4. Hibernation don't work anymore. s2disk saves image to disk and then it resumes it but computer stops on text message along the lines of "Resume completed successfully".
5. Changing volume with keyboard shotcuts no longer works.
6. Smplayer does not display picture anymore when playing movies. The view is just empty. I can only hear the soundtrack. It is using XV filter.
7. PCmanFM that used to worked flawlessly, now after going into 1 or 2 subdirectories stops reacting to clicks on file/folder list. Need to open new instance to be able to do anything and this again would become unusable after visiting 1-2 folders.
usually when my battery gets critically low, The system warns me to plug it in, and then it hibernates. But recently, It displays no warning, and instead of hibernating it just shuts off. It still displays the "20 minutes remaining" libnotify warning, but thats not useful if I'm doing something fullscreen.

When even power goes out system is getting shut-down abruptly. We have UPS for this system and some times UPS also runs out of power. Do we have any software, which monitors battery power and shutdown the system gracefully, when system knows that power is running out. I am using desktop machine, not a laptop. So I may some hardware like battery which runs fot sometime, even though there is no power. Then there will software which monitors and shut down the system gracfully.

For example, I set system clock and hardware clock both on 20:00. After about half an hour, the system clock will be 20:34/5 which is wrong while the hardware clock remains correct (20:30).

But now when booting I get a message saying "checking battery state" and then it boots no further. This is a laptop without a battery installed, running permanently from the mains through the charger.
How can I disable this check so that the laptop will still boot without a battery fitted?
getting back to our laptop, the stability window is ~3.2V. Meaning that when you operate the battery above this the electrolyte is oxidized on the positive electrode and reduced on the negative electrode. Remember that we only want to oxidize and reduce the active materials and don't want to do anything else. All these reactions other than the ones we want are called side reactions and these are really bad for the battery. The nominal voltage of a laptop battery is 3.7 V which means that something bad wants to happen as we use the battery.So long story short, stuff (e.g., passive layers and poor kinetics of reactions) happens and things are not as bad as they seem and you can increase the voltage up to 4.2V without bad things really happening. All chargers for Li-ion cells today cut the battery off when it reaches 4.2V. What you have to realize is that at 4.2V, these side reactions are present in finite amounts and start to chemically kill the battery, but its not that dramatic.
Operating to 4.1V makes things better and extends the life, 4.0 V is even better and so on. So why don't battery manufacturers cut the voltage off at, say, 4 V to get better battery life? Because every time you cut this voltage down you decrease the capacity of the battery and its run time. The 4.2V cutoff is a compromise between good run time and decent (read "not pathetic) life.On the other hand, if you charge the battery and then pull the plug (so to speak), the battery discharges some, the voltage drops, and these reactions become less of a problem and your battery life goes up. So the best things you can do is to charge the laptop (or cell phone, camera etc.) and once its charged, pull the plug. Your battery will thank you for it.As a matter of fact, if you own a Lenovo Thinkpad, you can actually change the state of charge to which you charge the battery using the Battery Maintenance utility. You can change this from charging to 100% state (where the voltage is 4.2V) to 90% so that your voltage is less. You lose some energy is doing that, but atleast you can change it to 100% when you need battery power and put it back down to 90% when you can plug in. I wish my Mac has the same feature.
I typically use the battery for a while (say 1/2 hour to 1 hour), then plug it in and wait to fully charge it, then I pull the plug and use it again for 1/2 hour to 1h and then I repeat this. Takes some getting used to and I forget to do this, but I try.
I am running my Ubuntu 32 bit server on top of Windows 7 64 bit with VirualBox. It's a 2 core Atom. It's been working good for about half a year. But the last about 6 weeks the system time only in Ubuntu is going slow. About -8 per 24 hours! I can only guess because I have more things running in my Windows 7 and Ubuntu.
I can set it right by coping the hareware time to system time with this command:

I just installed Ubuntu on a laptop that is running windows 7. I accidentally tried installing a piece of software from the software centre before setting up my network. When I boot Ubuntu it now runs in low graphics mode only.
View 9 Replies View RelatedI tried installing Ubuntu 9.10 using both Ubuntu Desktop CD and the Netbook Remix on a EEEPC 1005HA with an external CD drive.
In both cases I don't get any graphical interface during the installation. The CD is apparently installing everything silently, without letting me change anything on the way, and then it gets stuck.
The only screen I get is the first one, with the options to "try Ubuntu" or "install Ubuntu".
What's going on?
Am running karmic on a P2-350 Mhz with 256 Mb RAM. Yes, I know this is an old computer, but it has been very good, performance wise, since versions earlier than 8.x I think.
But now, after a fresh install of karmic, it is very slow at everything. Checked system monitor and CPU is constantly running at between 95% and 100%
It is a sad day indeed, but I need to run a developer's tool that only runs on Windows, and it interfaces with a USB device that doesn't do well through any VMs I've tried. I've resorted to installing XP.
Now, I'm wondering if there will be any problems I'll face installing XP after Ubuntu 10.04 has already been installed? I suspect so, but it's been a while since I dual booted, and I've never worked with Grub2,
Since support for 8.04 LTS will be ending soon, I decided to move up to 10.04 LTS. On my old Thinkpad A20m laptop, the install went well, and everything seemed to work except the middle trackpoint button. Fixed that easily by editing a conf file. Then I began to notice some problems; all power management options (suspend, idle timers, etc) have no effect. I checked the startup logs and it seems that ACPI was not loading due to my aged bios (yes it's the newest version available). I tried using acpi=force in the boot options, and viola: power management is working. But that made two other problems crop up.
Problem 2: Since using acpi=force, the laptop runs so hot it sometimes gets sluggish and locks up. I tried installing "thinkfan" from
the ubuntu repositories to have some way of easily changing the fan behavior(which I believe relies on ACPI in some fashion). No luck there. ACPI seems to not see my fan at all, and it only kicks on when the bios high temp failsafe is tripped. I should also mention I am using Xubuntu (for the lighter desktop). I'm still kind of an Ubuntu-noob, so I wasn't sure what other info to post.
I had F11 i586 installed on my X86_64 machine. I used preupgrade to move up to F12. (I had the space problems noted elsewhere, but eventually got all of the F12 packages installed.) Grub now has the following titles:
Fedora (2.6.31.5-127.fc12.i686)
Upgrade to Fedora 12 (Constantine)
Fedora (2.6.30.9-96.fc11.i586)
If I boot to F12, it boots up to a point where I get garbage graphics and the system freezes. If I boot to F11, SELinux relabels and the system then boots normally. I'd like to boot normally into F12.
