Ubuntu Installation :: Nfs Mount Broken Since Upgrading To 11.04

Apr 5, 2011

I've just upgraded to the 11.04 beta, everything working fine to start with (apart from not being able to find anything in the new interface!), but now, a few days later, the nfs mounts to my NAS are broken. I've had a quick go at manually mounting; for instance, if I try to mount 192.168.1.1/Public to /home/Public (where it usually is) it says that the mount point doesn't exist. It's not true, I can see it, and if I test it by trying a mkdir it confirms it. This is a pretty big deal, I've got ALL my stuff on the NAS. I can still see it from my phone and the web interface of the NAS, so I know it's there...Should I just re-install 10.10 and be patient until the final release comes out?

Ubuntu Installation :: Upgrading To 10.04 - Broken System?

Jun 19, 2010

I avoided upgrading to 10.04 when it was initially released because I couldn't afford for anything to go wrong with my computer around exam time. Sure enough, when I decided to upgrade today, the process got about halfway through and then gave me an error and left me with an unbootable system except in a recovery terminal.

In this terminal I discovered that most of the packages the upgrade wanted to configure depended in some way on shared-mime-info or desktop-file-utils. Configuring these with dpkg --configure gives me an error along the lines of:

Code:
undefined symbol: g_malloc0_n and an error code of 127. So, dpkg leaves those packages and consequently can't configure many of the subsequent packages in the dist-upgrade.

I was upgrading from 9.X (can't remember what X is) to I believe it was 10.2 (ok, this happened over a month ago and I just haven't had the time to run after it), and lost power. Obviously doesn't sound good, right? Now when I boot I get the message "alloc magic is broken at 0xaff2c150". I have no idea if this error message is indicative of the whole problem, or what, but I can't get back to my system. I would really rather not lose my work.

Ubuntu Installation :: Auto Mount After Upgrading To 10.4

Jun 12, 2010

I upgraded to 10.4 and installed Grub on a wrong drive. This means that I have it on the right drive (the one with Ubuntu) and in the wrong one (the one use for data). I have no problems with booting to Ubuntu or Windows. I can even access the files from the data drive (called Storage) after the systems boots. The thing is that I can't auto mount it anymore (with /etc/fstab) and I don't know how to remove grub from the drive, because I can't find where the boot files are. When booting Ubuntu, a message appears saying that there has been an error when trying to mount the drive, I press 'S', to skip the mounting and it goes to the desktop with no problems after that. I only want to be able to auto mount it, even if I can't remove it.

This is the info from Boot Info Script:
Code:
Boot Info Script 0.55 dated February 15th, 2010
=> Grub 2 is installed in the MBR of /dev/sda and looks on the same drive in partition #1 for /boot/grub.

Ubuntu :: Xorg.conf Broken - KDE And GNOME Failed - Result Of Upgrading Straight From 10.04?

Oct 29, 2010

I was recently watching an avi file, when suddenly, my tower (the computer) got really, really noisy. That's pretty normal when I'm on my Windows side, but very unusual for Ubuntu Linux. I knew something was in the wind then and there. So I exit my Dragon Player to discover that ! gasp ! KDE is down, replaced with the default wallpaper for GNOME, and no bars anywhere. I reset the system only to find that it refuses to boot into either KDE or GNOME. Having been in something similar to this situation before, I decide that Xorg.conf must be broken somehow. In an effort to get to the GUI where I can safely edit it, I try reinstalling KDE and GNOME, which both failed.

So I try installing xdm...which results in only being able to access the login screen for XFCE. Whenever I try to log in using the correct credentials, it simply refreshes the log-in screen.

1. Is this, indeed, the sign of a broken Xorg.conf, or a broken Xserver in general? Or is there something larger that was changed?

2. How do I fix this? (I've already tried using Ubuntu 10.10 64 in rescue mode, but I can't seem to change anything in the system itself.)

3. Is this possibly a result of upgrading straight from 10.04? Is it possible that having both KDE and GNOME contributed to this?

Debian Installation :: Critical Bug Of "mount -t Ntfs" Cause NTFS Partition Broken

May 2, 2010

About dual boot system with winxp and lenny.

Storage information:
1st primary:SG 160G ATA 100
1st secondary:WD 160 ATA 133
SATA:WD 1000
2nd primary:DVD
2nd secondary:DVD±RW

Winxp in 1st primary.I did a fresh install of lenny on 1st secondary.

info about lenny setup:
1.Partition list:/boot,/,/home,swap
2.Every partition is XFS except swap.

At the end of installion, lenny installed grub on (hd0) that is 1st primary.

Everything seems OK.Lenny runs OK.

But when I switch back to windows xp,the diskmgmt can not detect hdd's info and the system meets a problem of shutting down.

After many times of trying.
I solved the problem by the following way.
1.Boot with windows xp's install CD and use fixmbr on (hd0).
2.Boot with lenny's install DVD , do a grub>root (1,0)>setup (hd1)
After that,edit /boot/grub/menu.lst and change (hd0,0) to (hd1,0) and also (hd1,0) to (hd0,0).
3.Reboot and Press F8 for a boot menu then I can select which disk to boot.
windows boot from 1st primary's mbr, lenny boot from lenny's grub.

The problem is caused by a bug between GRUB and windows' mbr and maybe more about GRUB and XFS.

General :: After Upgrading To Ubuntu 9.10 External USB Drive Won't Auto Mount?

Nov 13, 2009

I upgraded Ubuntu 9.04 to 9.10 desktop a few weeks ago and an external USB drive that was mounting at startup on 9.04 is no longer mounting on 9.10. If I unplug the USB cable and plug it back in it comes up. The issue is strange in that when a regular non-admin logs in the drive auto mounts but does not for an admin login. I have not been able to put together search results that would lead me to a hint of why this would occur and/or what aresolution may be.Why would the drive auto mount when a regular user logs in but not auto mount for an admin? When I say admin I guess what I mean is a user with more privileges such as member of the admin group.

General :: Upgrading To Fedora 8 - Cannot Mount Partition

May 3, 2010

Not sure if I should consider myself a newbie or not, as I have been using fedora 1 for some years, but I only installed it as per the manual and then used it to web surf, didn't delve into the guts of linux. The other forums seem to be speaking languages largely beyond me. Anyway, I find I need to upgrade now. I have tried upgrading to fed 8 from the DVD, but I get the message 'cannot mount /dev/hda1', which is my windows partition.

Looking at the release notes , it says fed 8 expects all partitons to be labeled, as if this is a new requirement. Using /sbin/blkid I see hda1 is not labeled. Is this the problem? How can I label it? Looking at a 'how to' site, I found e2label and tune2fs, but it seems they only work with ext2 or ext3 partitions. In the bigger picture, I am expecting too much to upgrade 1 to 8? Should I give up and just install fed 8 from scratch?

Debian :: After Upgrading To Squeeze - Can't Mount My HDD Partitions Anymore

Actually, the /root- filesystem still gets mounted, for all the others I get the following message:

When I type

I get:

But this only happens when using my custom kernel (2.6.32.24). When I use the kernel which was automatically installed (2.6.32-5-amd64), the problem doesn't occur.

Is there a kernel option I should have turned on?

I checked the UUID-numbers from the error messages with the output of "blkid" - they match. The rootfs is on sda2 (which gets mounted without error) - so I tried applying the fstab mount options of sda2 to the other partitions - same problem still. what makes the root partition so special? Is it because it's defined by grub.cfg?

First off, last week I rebuilt my work PC fromWIN7 32bit to WIN7 64bit since then I can no longer mount the window share on my ubuntu server:

I recreated my windows share called "Linux" and used the properties, advanced sharing and added everyone, full access and my domain account full access.

From linux I use the same mount point as before, /linux I use the same fstab and it fails

I looked at my firewall rules and they seem ok.

Ubuntu Installation :: Mount Or Not To Mount - Can't Create A Partition

So i was forced to download the .iso file to install ubuntu in addition to Windows XP that was present when i bought it. To do so i used UNetbootin, and i used my only hard disk as a live CD. But when i wanted to install ubuntu, they told me to create a partition. The problem is that i can't. I have only one partition sda1(nfst) which covers the whole stockage memory, and an empty space(8Mo). I can't acceed to any of the resizing or modifying options to edit the nfst partition. The only options are manage flags and umount. When i click on this one, they tell me : # umount /cdrom : cdrom is busy.
