Ubuntu Installation :: Upgrade From Mounted Cd-rom?

Oct 9, 2010

I have downloaded ubuntu RC 10.10. (or, if you're reading this tomorrow, remove "rc" it wont make any difference) I would like to mount the image that I downloaded and update my ubuntu 10.09 trough upgrade manager.

Is that possible? It appears that the software sources tool only accepts cd-rom.

Or I can add it manually in the sources file?

Ubuntu :: Can't Access Data On Mounted Partition After Upgrade To 10.04

May 4, 2010

Yesterday, I upgraded to the 10.04 verion of xubuntu. Looks fine. However, I keep my data on an NTFS partition of my dual boot laptop, and am finding that I can't access it.

I have a symbolic link to that mounted partition, and when I click on it, I can see the first level of folders, but I can't execute them (even though they seem to be set to 777) and I can't open anything...

General :: 2nd HDD Is Not Mounted After Ubuntu Installation?

Apr 20, 2010

I recently formatted my hard drive and installed Ubuntu and I have the following problem: My laptop has to inbuilt hard drives, one which I use for the operating system and one which I use for storage. Up until 3 days ago, I had Windows XP and Ubuntu 8.04 installed on one of the hard drives, but decided to switch fully to Ubuntu 9 because Windows was giving me far too many issues. So I downloaded the ISO, burned it on CD and then installed. I formatted (as far as I could tell) only one drive but the other one has disappeared from view ever since. I asked a more Linux savvy friend of mine for help and he only got as far as determining that the 2nd HDD is still detected but not mounted. And then he referred me here.

Ubuntu Installation :: Duplicate Drives In "Places" - Error "mount: /dev/sdd1 Already Mounted Or /media/Data Busy Mount: According To Mtab, /dev/sdd1 Is Already Mounted On /media/Data"

Feb 13, 2010

Just moved to Ubuntu from XP. Whole process has gone very smoothly, but left with a small problem (i.e. it isn't actually affecting usability) that I don't seem to be able to fix and can't find on forums/internet. I also have a problem with the Floppy drive, but I've seen that problem elsewhere in the forums.

It's a dual boot system with both NTFS and Ext4 drives. All are visible and fully accessible. I decided to convert one of the NTFS drive to Ext4. That appeared to be successful and was successfully remounted as an Ext4 drive. The drive label is "Data". I did have a bit of a problem getting it remounted so that I could see/use it under my log-in as opposed to just under root. It's at this point I think that I did something to create the problem.

I now have two entries for "Data" in drop down menu for Places. The true one is shown as a standard hard drive icon, but the false one is shown as a different icon - possibly an external drive icon (note that the floppy drive is also showing as the same icon and I can't access that, but I've seen that's a problem elsewhere in the forums).

I can write and read to the true "Data" hard drive. If I click on the other false "Data" icon, I get the message "mount: /dev/sdd1 already mounted or /media/Data busy mount: according to mtab, /dev/sdd1 is already mounted on /media/Data". If unmount the true drive and try to mount the false drive, the system mounts the true drive instead. If I log into nautilus as root, neither the false data drive or the floppy appear in the left hand panel.

Ubuntu Installation :: SDA1 Mounted On /CDROM While Booting From CD

Why is this happening? Previously with older live-cd's I always have to mount the HD manually if I wanted to access it for any reason?

Ubuntu Installation :: Wrong Drive Mounted As /boot During 10.10 Install?

Mar 19, 2011

My old server machine running Ubuntu 6 experienced hardware failure, so I built a new machine with spare parts and decided to install 10.10. I used the 2 HDDs from the old machine and decided to use existing partitions for the 10.10 installation. I specified the existing partitions on a 250 GB PATA drive for root, /boot, /home, and swap. For some reason when I booted up 10.10 for the first time, the other HDD (750 GB SATA) was mounted as /boot. I never specified the second drive to be used for anything during the installation, so I have no idea why this happened.and how can I change the mount point for /boot? I would like the highlighted partition in the attached screenshot to be /boot. I really hope nothing on the 750 GB drive was overwritten in this whole process, because it contains all of my photo and video backup.

Debian Installation :: All Partitions Mounted At Boot Time (Squeeze)

Dec 5, 2010

I am using Gnome and Squeeze. I am wondering if I have a problem of understanding, or a problem that I found with Gnome.

My configuration is with a 3 hard disk system.

disk1 (Debian)
disk2 (XP and Fedora)
Disk3 (W7 and a Data partition)

When I boot and log in, all partitions for disk2 and disk3 are mounted read-write. Only by going to command line am I able to unmount the drives with the following sequence

cd /media
umount *
umount *

I should be able to mount and umount a drive by providing or responding to a root password. But I am not given the option to present a password. My request is blocked.

I also do not want to see the drives remounted after a boot. I tried to find out how this was managed, but I was unable to discover the module and it's parameter list that controls or does this task.

Fedora Installation :: 11 - Can't Be Mounted When Booting After Converting From Ext3 To Ext4

Jun 16, 2009

I upgraded F10 to F11 successfully.

Then I convert the / partition filesystem by the following steps:login as root user in multi user mode read [url], and execute tune2fs -O extents,uninit_bg,dir_index /dev/mapper/VolGroup01-LogVol00 modify /etc/fstab, change the type of / to ext4

reboot
(because fsck say running it on a mounted filesystem can cause filesystem damage, so i decide to reboot to single user mode first. maybe it's a mistake here) try to boot F11 to single user mode, failed

reboot from a SystemRescueCD-1.2.0 LiveCD
run e2fsck -fpDC0 /dev/mapper/VolGroup01-LogVol00 in SystemRescueCD-1.2.0 LiveCD, no error reported

reboot
try to boot F11 normally(multi user mode), but it failed at: EXT3-fs: dm-0: couldn't mount because of unsupported optional features (40).

I tried rescue mode of Fedora-11-i386-netinst.iso after these steps above. The / partition can be found and mounted to /mnt/sysimage correctly. I can read/write files in / partition, and i can even yum new softwares in rescue mode, but it just can't be mounted when booting.
