I have successfully installed debian and updated it. After few days of installation maybe around a month. I tried to install some other software from synaptic but my installation CD isn't being detected like before. What do I do? The CD can be opened etc., but its not getting mounted as /cd-rom/ which the synaptic packagemanger searches most of the time.
View 2 RepliesI have fake(bios) raid0 with Windows XP and third non-raid hd which I wanted use to install linux to (as I read about problems with installing grub into raid0). During installation Yast had correctly detected raids and all windows partitions (basically its divided into two raids with 2 partitions of 1st and 3 on 2nd) and even proposed mounting them at /windows/c, /windows/d and so on. Now I have OpenSuse 11.4 installed, grub at /boot on sdc but to log to system I need to use installation disc (otherwise Windows starts up). What I wanted to do is follow this tutorial to add grub to Windows bootloader: Boot Multiboot openSUSE Windows (2000, XP, Vista - any mix) with Windows bootloader. Problem is after reboot partitions are not mounted (dirs exists but nothing there) so I cannot copy boot code to windows. I read that fake raid may need special drivers but when i start Yast->system->partitions it again shows everything correctly!

I am using Gnome and Squeeze. I am wondering if I have a problem of understanding, or a problem that I found with Gnome.
My configuration is with a 3 hard disk system.
disk1 (Debian)
disk2 (XP and Fedora)
Disk3 (W7 and a Data partition)
When I boot and log in, all partitions for disk2 and disk3 are mounted read-write. Only by going to command line am I able to unmount the drives with the following sequence
cd /media
umount *
umount *
I should be able to mount and umount a drive by providing or responding to a root password. But I am not given the option to present a password. My request is blocked.
I also do not want to see the drives remounted after a boot. I tried to find out how this was managed, but I was unable to discover the module and it's parameter list that controls or does this task.
I am installing Linux for the first time right now and I am facing a bit of an issue when it comes to network hardware driver installation. The NIC on my motherboard is a Marvel 88E1111 (computer is very old). During the installation of Debian, I got to a menu which read "No Ethernet card detected. If you know the name of the driver needed by your Ethernet card you can select it from the list", then provides me with said list of driver names.
However, the only driver I could find that came close the NIC I am using was one called just "Marvel", and selecting actually didn't do anything (screen flashes blue and returns me to the same menu). So I continued by selecting the "none of the above" option, and now the new menu reads: "A driver for your hardware is not available. You may need to load drivers from removable media (...)". So I thought I should google for the drivers and see what I can find. The official site of the company that made my NIC doesn't even list my model in their drivers' list (to be expected since it is so old).
Then I found this: URL.., but I was expecting more of a download than the source code itself.
I'm was trying to choose between GNOME and KDE for version 8. However both the live DVD's fail to pick up the Wifi card on my system. I am also unable to use certain basic commands such as ifconfig on the live CD. I am completely new to Linux and Debian (of course). Pardon me for the hand holding. This will be my first install of a Linux system.
What steps I can take to ensure that the Wifi card and the network card will be supported - hardware compatibility test maybe? Is there a way to try before installing? This will be a dualboot with Windows 8.1

When it goes trying to install the "everyday-use" packages it cames with this message:Some error ocurred while unpacking. I am going tp configure the packages that were installed. This may result in duplicate errors or erros caused by missing dependencies. This is ok, only the erros above this message are important. Please fix them and Install again
View 8 Replies View RelatedI'm trying to install Debian Testing onto my Acer Aspire One ZG5 using the testing versions of boot.img and debian-testing-i386-CD-1.iso. I previously installed (two days ago) the latest release of stable, and the boot.img/CD1 from that worked fine, installed seamlessly. With testing though, the menu does not respond to the keyboard as soon as the menu appears to select Install/Graphical install/Help, etc. I have also tried to boot with an external (USB) keyboard, which again, works fine with the stable version of boot.img/CD1, but not testing.I did some searching and couldn't find anything that looked similar

I'm a long time user of Debian, but I'm having trouble with my partitioning process. Here is where I currently stand:
I am installing the latest Wheezy build. I am trying to install debian with an encrypted LVM that spans two hard disks.
My partitioning layout is as:
1. /home
2. /root
3. swap
4. /boot
I then added partitions 1, 2 and 3 to a physical volume group. I then took that physical volume group and added it to a logical volume. Then I encrypted the logical volume, leaving the /boot partition untouched. I was under the assumption that the only partition the system needed free to reach the loading of the LVM is the /boot partition, as it holds the files necessary for booting. But when I attempt to finalize the disk, it gives an error stating, "No root file system detected". That would be an issue as it is currently sitting inside the encrypted LV. Am I wrong in including the root partition in the encrypted LV?
What is the best way of having as little of my file system non-encrypted as possible while still allowing a proper boot?
This is my problem, I want to install debian 5.5 Lenny stable (2.6.26-2-amd64) on our new Dell PowerEdge T610 with a PERC controller H200
but nothing to do, the default Debian installer does not detect it. After more research, the module that I must load is "mpt2sas" and after normaly my hard-drive will be detected I'm going on the Dell site, there are only drivers for RedHat and Suze distribution .. I still try to install rpm packages but without success!
I'm having problem in installing debian 7.5.0 on Dell Power Edge R 470 1U Rack Server ( Not Sure If am using RAID 1 ) whereby the hard drive is not detected. This server is running 2 Proc/2x1.2 SAS HDD . I installed Debian on my PC with a Acer Stock motherboard (xc600) with amd64 and after the installation finished it told me to remove my installation media and reboot. After reboot I was returned this message ' ERROR: No boot disk has been detected or the disk has failed.'. I have verified with gparted using mint live OS that I have Debian installed on my system.
I got believes that this may have be caused by a broken grub or I need to configure something I don't know how in BIOS.

My installation media was a USB 2.0 flashdrive with a Debian 8.2 Jessie Installer and 9 different Linux distros. I have installed Debian multiple times before on my laptop and never had this problem so I know how to go through the installation process and set the partitions.
My swap is not mounted at boot. get it to mount again? I CAN make it mount after booting but I need to hibernate. I read that I have to edit /etc/fstab but I'm not quite sure as to what I have to do specifically.
View 11 Replies View RelatedI've carelessly installed grub on hda5 instead of hda, using:
# grub-install /dev/hda5
And now my hda5 cannot be mounted with ntfs-3g. Here the error message 'mount' gives:
Failed to mount '/dev/hda5': Invalid argument
The device '/dev/hda5' doesn't seem to have a valid NTFS.
As far as I know, grub-install rewrites the 1st sector of the device, and I've been reading this guide on recover the 1st sector of an NTFS partition. The problem is that the Disk Probe tool is available in Windows only. Is there any similar software in Debian to do the same thing (i.e allows us to edit sectors of the hard drives available in the computer)? Any easier tool / method to restore the NTFS partition without read and write sectors manually.
when I mount DVD-ROM to some files from xterm, the systerm never responsed! I used this command: sudo mount -t iso9660 /dev/cdrom /mnt/cd I search some info from google ,some guys say these info may help ,but I don't understand why it cab be crashed when I mount the CD from DVD-ROM.

I've been scouring the net and I'm sure it's something simple but here's my problem. I have a BeagleBone Black running Debian from a uSD card. I also have a 1TB WD My Passport external HD. If I have the external drive plugged in when I boot it is mounted under /media/My Passport it is formated NTFS since it was being used for windows. Being that I'm planning on eventually planning on making this a nas/owncloud device mounting at boot is fine but I would like to mount it under another directory. I've looked in /etc/rc.local and /etc/fstab and it does not mention that drive in either place and autofs is not installed.

I installed jessie on a laptop with one SSD. I used guided partitioning and selected the whole drive with multiple partitions. The /home now takes up 420 GB. I would like to reduce that to 20 GB to make room for another partition.
What are the methods reduce this partition?

View 10 Replies View RelatedI have recently installed Debian on my NAS server. I have also configured Samba for sharing the home directory of a nas user i.e. /home/nas To this directory I have read/write from a windows machine using the nas user credentials.
When I mount my RAID partition /dev/md0p1 to the /home/nas directory, I then realize that all content in this directory (files and subfolders) is only owned by the root user. When trying to access from the windows machine the /home/nas directory, I do not have any write access, only read. I have tried both the nas and the root user credentials.
I have also attempted the change the ownership of the mounted RAID partition to the nas user with the -R recursive option, but I get for the internal files/subfolders an error "operation not supported".
How can I overcome this problem?
- Is there something not done properly in the /dev/md0 array definition (i.e. ARRAY /dev/md0 level=raid1 num-devices=2 UUID=bddf8b69:c97967b5:cb104784:7fef7cc3 )?
- Is there something not done properly in the /dev/md0p1 mounting (i.e. mount /dev/md0p1 /home/nas)?
- Should I do any extra configuration before the mounting etc?
I have two partitions in LVM. They are added in /etc/fstab to mount automatically. But, they are not working. The process to mount partitions seems to be happening before the service /etc/init.d/lvm2 is started. I can get it mounted using "mount -a" command, but not during the boot time. What should I do get it automatically mounted on every boot?
View 5 Replies View RelatedI'm not sure if this is a bug in Squeeze beta 2 or if it's something I've overlooked. I have a Maxtor 250 GB external USB drive that I use for backups. It gets auto-mounted fine, always in the same place, and from my normal user account I can write to it, even delete directories on it if I want to. But when, from Gnome, I select the "Safely remove" option, I get an error to the effect that it can't stop the device. The weird thing is that the thing actually *is* unmounted. I've checked the mount point and it's no longer there.Is there some package I maybe should've installed but haven't? I'm not really worried about data loss, since I'm sure the drive wouldn't unmount unless it was properly synched; it's just the error message that bugs me.

Fact is that I know it works for sure in fedora and debian so I wonder if it a problem of some dependency missing, configuration or permissions. I use the testing distro by the way...
