Ubuntu Installation :: Upgrade From 9.04 Server To 10.04 Server And Cannot Boot

Jun 7, 2011

I've just upgraded by dedicated server with OVH from 9.04 to 10.04 and it now refuses to boot with the error "kernel panic unable to mount rootfs on unknown block 2,0" With OVH you must use their custom kernel, but this has been installed and seems to boot thus far, but fails at above. OVH also recommend adding a dev line to fstab, which I've done: [URL] I'm now at a loss as what to do, as it seems the kernel can't see the hard drives, yet when I boot up in rescue mode, I can mount all the drives fine.

Ubuntu Installation :: Upgrade From Ibex Server To Lucid Server With Matrix LSA?

Jul 7, 2010

I have a dedicated server with Fasthosts. It's currently running Ubuntu Server 8.10 and I want to update it to 10.04.

The only issue I have so far is it runs Matrix Server Appliance 2.0-38

Does anyone know if this will be affected by the upgrade in a bad way?

I have had no luck finding a site for Matrix or any other information.

For the upgrade itself, I was hoping to run do-release-upgrade.

Ubuntu Installation :: Upgrade 10.10 Server To 11.04 Server Failed?

Apr 30, 2011

I am running 2 Ubuntu servers, one as UEC frontend and the other as UEC node. I started, last night, the server upgrade on the frontend. As it promised to take several hours I left it alone to proceed through the night. This morning it was waiting on a prompt which, by virtue of hitting esc to relight the monitor, it continued upgrading packages. At some point subsequent to that it paused on a discrepancy between the eucalyptus.conf file the install wanted to save and the eucalyptus.conf file that existed. I reviewed the deltas and determined that the current, as it existed, would suffice. I received 3 more messages on the console:

Installing new version of config file /etc/init/eucalyptus-network.conf. Installing new version of config file /etc/init/eucalyptus-conf...
eucalyptus start/running process 15290
Then no further console messages nor apparent disk or cpu activity
I can shell into the machine and see the following:
Code:
root 7077 6784 0 Apr29 tty1 00:00:33 /usr/bin/python /tmp/update-manager-0r8nH5/natty --mode=server --frontend=DistUpgradeViewText

Ubuntu Installation :: 9.10 Server - When Boot It Only Boots To The Server Version And All Get Is Command Line

Apr 1, 2010

I was having so much trouble with ubuntu 8.04 that I deleted off my computer and did a fresh install of 9.10. I downloaded the 64 bit iso from the internet, burned it to a disc and installed it. When it asked if it should be the server version I thought I said no. Now when I boot it only boots to the server version and all I get is command line. Can I get out of this and get my regular ubuntu screen back or did I install the wrong version?

Ubuntu Installation :: 10.04 Server Upgrade: No Upgrades Are Available

May 9, 2010

I'm trying to update an Ubuntu Server install to 10.04. I believe something went wrong when I upgraded it from 8.10 to 9.10 in the past. Currently /etc/apt/sources.list would indicate the system is running 9.10, but /etc/issue says 8.10, as does lsb_release -a.

apt-get update and apt-get upgrade show everything is up to date. When I do a do-release-upgrade it tells me that there are no upgrades available.

Ubuntu Installation :: Tomcat Server After Upgrade From 9.4 To 9.10?

Jul 23, 2010

I should have caught this during the upgrade, I saw the potential problem but failed to write it down. All my applications served by Tomcat fail to load. Catalina logs show the following error for each app. Error deploying configuration descriptor msgboard.xml The complete error for an individual application is

[Code]...

Again, during the upgrade a warning popped up that each app would need to be spelled out in some configuration file SOMEWHERE because of a change in security! Would someone be so kind as to direct me as to where and how this would be accomplished. I apologizes for not being able to find this out on my own but have looked and can't find it. I'm pretty sure anyone proficient with Tomcat on Linux will know what and where these changes need to be made. Or if anyone knows if and where there is a log of all communication during the upgrade I might be able to figure this out on my own. Is there such a log kept during an upgrade? Also if this question would be more appropriate in the Server Platforms forum I will do that.

Ubuntu Installation :: Upgrade File Server 9.04 X64 Desktop

Jun 9, 2011

I was having trouble figuring out how to upgrade my file server (running 9.04 x64 desktop) to 10.04 so I asked google. It led me to this webpage: [URL]... which told me to run this command:

Code:
cd /etc/apt
perl -i.bak -pe 's/jaunty/lucid/' sources.list
aptitude update
aptitude dist-upgrade

It ran for a bit and now it says that it is running 10.04.2 LTS, but I am unable to get any updates. When I open the update manager it tells me "Not all updates can be installed" and says that I need to run a partial upgrade. When I hit partial upgrade it then tells me that "An upgrade from 'lucid' to 'jaunty' is not supported with this tool." This comp serves as my web/sql/file server so it's pretty important I keep it functional. Everything else seems to be working fine though which I can only assume is a good thing. Here's a copy of my sources.list:

Google have not yielded any results as yet. If I leave out this step and use configure, make and make install, v2.2.19 gets installed, but to a different directory and all the config will need to be reformatted as it seems it does not use the Ubuntu Apache config structure.

Ubuntu Installation :: 10.04 - Whenever Attempt Upgrade Server Becomes Unbootable And Have To Reimage And Start Again

Apr 18, 2011

I have had Ubuntu desktop on my PC for a year now and am very happy with it. A couple of months ago I got a Ubuntu server 10.04 for playing about with. I have installed the gui, for personal reasons, but I want to upgrade to 10.10

Whenever I attempt the upgrade my server becomes unbootable and I have to reimage and start again. I have even tried performing the upgrade before I install the GUI but it still makes no difference.

Although I have the GUI I am doing the upgrade via command line.

Upon watching the upgrade in process, I find that no errors are occurring. Could it be something to do with my server provider?

Server Specs are: Specification: Intel Dual Core, 2.2 GHz 800MHz FSB, 2MB L2 Cache, 2Gb DDR, 1x 250Gb HDD

Ubuntu Installation :: 11.04 Upgrade Or Reinst Causes White Terminal Screen And Endless Restart Of X Server

Apr 29, 2011

I'm having lots of trouble with 11.04. Note: everything used to work beautifully on 10.10 for me. I first upgraded and ran into all the problem below, then reinstalled clean and still have the same issues.

1. Terminal screen is unreadable after grub menu. The screen is all white and text is garbage looking. My graphics card is an nvidia fx5200.If I edit the boot option for linux and remove the line 'set gfxpayload = $linux_gfx_mode', the terminal looks normal again.

2. Unity or Compiz or both are broken for me.

Regardless of whether I fix the issue in 1 or leave it there, after booting into X11 my desktop looks like it is blinking. I think my unity keeps restarting. If I disable compiz and use meta city the screen is stable but I have no menus making it useless.

NOTE: I didn't explicitly install any nvidia drivers, not sure if it did it install it automatically as part of the isntallation.

I don't care for Unity (even though it looks kinda nice). I just want my X11 working again with HW acceleration. I am happy to go back to a working gnome except I don't know how. After the upgrade, I was able to switch my driver from nvidia to vesa in xorg.conf and get something usable (but horribly slow), I think it was classic and not unity. However a fresh isntall has a stub for xorg.conf with nothing much in it. If all else fails, I will reinstall 10.10 and wait for a more stable 11 release.

Update: I used to tick automatic login which took it straight to unity which meant I ran into 2. and made this version unusable. If I untick this option on installation I can at least switch to classic and use my desktop.

Ubuntu Installation :: Cannot Boot 10.0 Desktop Or Server?

Apr 8, 2011

I currently dual boot Vista and Fedora on one drive, and have tried 5 times to install Ubuntu 10.0 64-bit on another drive. I used desktop CD and put /boot on 1 GB /dev/sdc1 ext4 and root on 100 GB /dev/sdc2 ext4. It installs fine, but when you go to boot, and you pick it from the GRUB menu, it times out and says it cannot find /dev/ with the ID.Because GRUB runs you can conclude that it never has a problem finding /dev/sdc1.

When I boot into Fedora, I can mount and access both partitions without a problem. I've run e2fsck -ccv on /dev/sdc2 over and over again with no issues whatsoever, unmounted, of course. I then created a new logical group and used /dev/sdc3, inside of which I put a 100 GB logical volume. I installed root onto it using the Server 10.10 64-bit CD. No problems with installation. GRUB came up with all the new options, but again, when I selected to boot into either the new server install or the old desktop install, it timed out and dropped into a useless command line that was non-responsive to keystrokes. The now the /dev name is the /dev/mapper/lg_raptor/lv_uroot logical volume that it says does not exist.

Again, I boot into Fedora, able to access all these partitions, including the new logical volume, without any problems. I can mount them, view all their files, and open them.Fedora reports that the file systems are clean. Why can't Ubuntu's GRUB see the Ubuntu partitions when I select them from the menu despite being able to boot into Fedora and Vista when I select them from the same menu, and Fedora able to mount and access these partitions without a problem and a clean bill of health from e2fsck?

Ubuntu Installation :: 10.04 Server - Screen Goes Blank After First Boot

I've installed 10.04 Server on a desktop three times. The install goes well and after the installation, the server reboots and I can login with no problems. I can also look around the file system and run some of the utilities. My network can also see the server. The problem comes when I restart the server for the first time after the installation restart. The system starts to come up and then the screen goes blank. The computer is still running but there is no video signal to the monitor; and the network cannot see the system. I believe this has something to do with the master boot record but I'm not sure.

Ubuntu Installation :: 10.04 Server Will Not Boot - Fatal Error

Oct 5, 2010

This box is running 10.04 server, it's been running perfectly for almost 6 weeks. It's only function in life is running MailArchiva which is an ediscovery package, runs very well. Anyhow, yesterday the boss tells me he wants to do something else so the last thing I did was an apt-get update and an apt-get upgrade, no errors were observed, I seem to remember like 8 updates were available, this is what I've normally done in the past to keep it current. The last thing I did after that was shutdown -r now.

This morning I can't get into the box, I reconnected a monitor to it and this is the error I'm getting when it stops after about 9 lines into the boot process;
modprobe: FATAL: Error inserting padlock_sha (/lib/modules/2.6.32-24-server/kernel/drivers/crypto/padlock-sha.ko): No such device.
This is a mystery to me, the system is not encrypted. The only stuff that is belongs to MailArchiva. Anyhow someone evidently made off with my install cd so I am downloading another to see if I can repair this but I have no idea what broke.
