Ubuntu Installation :: Unable To Boot From CD / Enable This?
Jan 9, 2010
I have a Dell Inspiron 1525 and I've been trying to boot into the live mode. I can get into the main 'Try Ubuntu without any changes' menu, but selecting that option causes the CD tray to spin up, followed by the head audibly flailing about for a minute or two causing the laptop to noticeably vibrate, followed by nothing. It doesn't boot or give any errors, it just stops. I can read the discs just fine in Windows.
So far I've tested shipit CDs of 9.10, 9.04 and 8.10. All cause the above problem. 8.04 works perfectly.

I recently installed Deluge 1.2.0 from the following PPA:[URL]I using this on two different Linux computers. One is running Linux Mint 8 and the other is running Ubuntu Netbook Remix 9.10. The first time on either computer when I enable WebUI in the Deluge GUI it works fine. However if I ever disable it in plugins section I am subsequently unable to re-enable it (doesn't appear in the side panel again). Rebooting or reinstalling Deluge seems to have no effect. Is this a bug or am I doing something wrong?

I know it is saying that the harddrive that I installed ubuntu is missing.
Heres the story:
My friend's computer wouldnt let him boot to the CD to install Ubuntu on his computer.
So I put his harddrive into my computer as my 3'rd Harddrive and booted the CD on my Machiene and installed Ubuntu to his harddrive.
We got ubuntu to work just fine, and then I removed his harddrive from my computer... big mistake. I no longer have the harddrive that we installed ubuntu to so I cannot use any programs or anything.
What I want to do is get my Windows 7 working again. Right now I cannot do ANYTHING.

I've been dual booting 10.10(with Windows7) for about a month. Today is the first time I've encountered a serious problem.
This morning, nothing functioned properly after trying to open up several programs. The computer seemed to be "frozen", although the mouse was working fine.
I decided to reboot, but then encountered an even bigger problem. It failed to boot and got this message code...

First of all, i'll just say this myself. I'm a dumbass and tried to fix somethings that wasn't even a problem from the start and now my 9.10 installation is totally fubar. There, done, now let's move on.
Ok, so I tried to delete a folder after compiling two binaries to the wrong folder and used the
Code:
rm -r
command on what I thought was the folder /home/lars/bin. And to add to the dumbass-ering, I was root while doing this. The computer hangs and leaves me with no other options than doing a hard-reset via power-button.
After rebooting I can't even see the login screen, it just hangs at the Ubuntu symbol.
So I give the recovery mode option in my grub menu a try and it gives me a bunch of lines, all looking good until I get this and the boot just stops with a blinking underscore. code...
Should I just beat myself for a while and then reinstall the OS or what...?
The hardware involved is a Asus EEEpc 1000h.
ps. I'm new to Linux and have so-far managed to get around by following guides and tips, just a heads-up.

I am able to get into GRUB and boot Linux, but whenever I select Windows, all I get is an error about a missing boot loader.
After the Windows install disk failed to repair it, I reinstalled the Windows system and then used the Ubuntu live-CD to restore GRUB in order to be able to boot into Linux again. Now I have the same problem as when I started (although the error screen is somewhat different now).
Does anyone know how to break this "evil circle" of mine?
I am using the 10.10 (GRUB 2 in other words).

I have recently adquired a Dell Inspiron laptop with Intel Core 2 processor and Windows 7 Home Basic Edition (64 bits) installed. Since I need for working linux I have performed a reduction of the main partition of Windows leaving free a 20 GB of hard drive. With an Ubuntu 9.04 Desktop version (64 bits) I have installed then Ubuntu linux in the empty space mentioned now then having a dual boot laptop (I have done this before with other computers, I knew how to do it so to make it work). All went well and both OS works fine. I have installed a lot of packs without any problem, when I installed thunderbird pack I notice that its version is 2.0. I didn`t think that was a problem until I wanted to install some addons and thunderbird complaints that those addons only work with versions superior to 3.0. " Ok" I said to myself, and looked here code...

I have a very big problem here. First a little background information. I tried searching this forum but didn't find anyone with similar situation.
I have installed Ubuntu and it's variations many, many times on different computers, and once in my current desktop PC. Right now I am in a situation where I want to install Ubuntu 10.04.01 (or any version, really) but I cannot.
I have tried to install both 32-bit and 64-bit versions, I have tried Ubuntu 10.04.1 and 10.10, I have tried to install with Wubi (currently running Windows 7 64bit), I have tried to burn the images to CD and created an USB installer, nothing works, it's always the same. Installer starts, I put in "Install Ubuntu", and the screen goes blank. Nothing but a white little cursor blinking in upper left corner of screen. And I cannot type in anything.
Previously I had Ubuntu 10.04 installed with Wubi, and it worked. Right now, nothing works. Anything helpful appreciated. I can provide some system info if needed.

Ok so recently a friend recommended I try Ubuntu. So I downloaded and ripped 11.04. Reset PC went to install and got to about 95% then got an error that said "Unable to Install GRUB in /dev/sda" then downloaded 10.04 LTS and got same issue along with 10.01 (friends disc) and same issue. I have tried both 64 and 32bit, have tried iso and usb. I was able to install it on an older machine of mine and enjoying it. But I really want it on my main machine. Here are the specs of my main.
MOBO = X58 SATA 6Gb/s USB 3.0 ATX Intel Motherboard code...
Number 8 and 9 are the issue and choices after words. I am unable to select any choice on step nine. when i hit OK it wont do anything.
I hope this is all enough info and would love any help that is given. My friend who is an Ubuntu user is throwing his hands in the air at this point lol.
While doing research I found a few ppl with similar issues. And one person said when he made his own /root and /home partitions it worked. I get similar issue even if I take those steps.
Ive collected as much info for you guys as I can think of if you need more info plz let me know.

I will say this now; I am still in high school, so forgive my stupidity. I am trying to install either 10.10 or 10.04 on a Dell 1525. It has no operating system on it, and the CD/DVD drive is nonexistent. I have tried to install 10.10 on it using a USB, with both UNetbootin and Pen Drive Linux. Using either one, both end up freezing at the "Preparing to Install" screen. When trying to install 10.04, it will not load, even after 24 hours. On the loading screen, I pressed F1 to view the terminal and got this output:
(process:352): GLib-WARNING **: getpwuid_r(): failed due to unknown user id (0)
Killed
I got all downloads from their home websites, www.ubuntu.com, www.pendrivelinux.com, and www.unetbootin.sourceforge.net. I have spent all my spare time since the newest release trying to fix whatever problem there is, so does anyone know what I did wrong?

The trouble that I am experiencing is that when trying to install MS Office 2003 to my Pc/ Non-laptop computer with Wine I keep getting the error if I double click setup.exe in the MS Office 2003 CD code...
I have seen many tutorials online but all of them require modifying .DLL's in Wine and none of them have worked so far.

I have Ubuntu 10.04 LTS and Windows XP installed on my laptop. Usually when booting, I get the GRUB 2 menu and I can boot into either Ubuntu or XP.I was playing around with EasyBCD, then after trying to remove it I was unable to boot into Windows, I used a Windows 2000 CD recovery console to fix the MBR (using: fixboot and fixmbr). Now Windows starts up when I power on, but I don't get the grub menu anymore with an Ubuntu option. If I boot from the Ubuntu Live CD and try to mount my Ubuntu partition (/dev/sda5) I get this error:
mount: wrong fs type, bad option, bad superblock on /dev/sda5,
missing codepage or helper program, or other error
In some cases useful info is found in syslog - try

Following the Grub2 tutorials I have tried editing /etc/grub.d/40_custom as follows:-

But no luck. Only way into Archlinux is to get into the edit shell and manually add the missing line and remove other stuff not needed. I have spent hours trying to resolve this issue and I am fairly p----d off

Having a major issue with my laptop. I am unable to boot into my Vista installation.I am currently posting this through my Fedora 11 installation which I had already. If anyone is interested, the BSOD error is:
0x0000007B (0x80399BB0, 0xC0000034, 0x00000000, 0x00000000)
As far as I know, a '7B' BSOD is usually a hard disk error but I am 100% sure the HDD is fine as I can read and write from both Fedora and Knoppix without issue. Steps taken so far: Obviously, I have tried the usual steps of trying to start windows in safe mode, last good config, and all of the F8 options. When they failed, I used fedora to check for some solutions online (Mostly useless answers from MS) and I found one successful case when a person flashed his BIOS back to an earlier time. Unfortunately, I cant get the BIOS update I got from the Dell website to boot from a USB drive (Says invalid boot disc - the BIOS on it is in the .exe format which I can't use in linux) and I do not have a floppy drive on the laptop.
So, I put in my Dell drivers and utilities CD hoping that it would give me some option to update (Or roll back) the BIOS but there was no such option. However, it did give me a load of diagnostic options including repair options by symptom so went with the "Unable to boot from BIOS". Unfortunately, that didnt help me at all. So, I got my Vista installation disc (OEM supplied) and managed to get to the repair menu (Which I had among my F8 options anyway) but this also has the option to reinstall. Unfortunately, it states that "Upgrade is unavailable" and that a clean install is the only thing I can select (At the expense of my files and settings).
As for the repair options, the automatic recovery doesn't seem to find any errors, asks to reset and see if all is well (It isn't). For some reason, system restore doesn't detect any restore points. There are no windows memory errors detected and I have no backups. So, i'm left with a command prompt that, by default, is asking for a file in this folder: X:/WINDOWS/System32/ I have no idea where it is getting the X: drive from - I have C and D drives for windows only. As per another online guide, I tried:

I downloaded the Ubuntu .iso and burnt it on to a CD. It boots fine on all systems apart from the one I am trying to install it on. This laptop doesn't have a floppy disc drive or the option to boot from a USB pen drive. I've taken the Hard disk out of it and used a USB drive caddy to connect it as a USB drive on a system running XP. How do I go about Installing Ubuntu onto the this USB drive so I can put it back in the laptop as an internal HDD. I've tried unetbootin to install the iso to the USB HDD but when I put it in the laptop as internal drive it doesn't boot.

I installed Windows XP via a USB memory stick as well.
