Ubuntu Installation :: Installation Fails Every Time - Message To Reboot My Computer Appeared At The End

Jan 9, 2011

I recently decided to install ubuntu netbook remix 10.10 to my Toshiba NB200. I was using windows and I wanted to completely erase them. I burned the USB, I followed every single instruction the site had, and even though the installation seemed to work, and a message to reboot my computer appeared at the end, the installation finally fails. When I reboot, the only thing I get is a black screen with an underscore at the top left corner. I tried the installation four to six times and even tried older versions as well but all I get is the black screen.

Fedora Installation :: Creating Local Repository At Installation Time

Feb 26, 2011

I am preparing an installation for a network with small subnetworks across the country. As such, I am setting up a central repository, but would like the installation of some machines to turn themselves into mirrors at installation time (at least for their own rpms) to save bandwidth for the rest of the machines in their own sub network. Is it somehow possible to set up a local mirror at installation time?I was watching how anaconda is installing from a repository and saw that it erases each downloaded rpm as soon as it is installed, but thought maybe someone here would have an idea.

Ubuntu :: After Log In Takes Long Time To Show Desktop, Monitor Events At Log In Time?

May 24, 2011

It takes me a while to log in the splash screen just sits there for ages before i get to the desktop. Never used to be this slow and I'm not sure why. Firstly, I'm running Ubuntu 11.04, standard DE. I do have conky starting up in a script but it has the & at the end of the line so I didn't think this would cause it (or is there some special case for log in time on how & is treated?). However as a test I will comment out the line in the script and see if it is the cause.

However just for general knowledge and in case that isn't the problem, how does one go seeing what is happening during the time from when one log's in and the desktop is displayed? Is there some kind of log that shows the date/time that can be enabled or is there a debug mode that can be enabled somehow via special keys or maybe from grub?

Ubuntu Servers :: Get Notices That There Are Updates For The Server Software From Time To Time?

Mar 29, 2010

I have several file servers in our offices and I am relatively new to Ubuntu / Linux. I get notices that there are updates for the server software from time to time. Is it typical to update everything when available or should I follow "If it ain't broke, don't fix it..." mentality?I would hate for everything to be working fine and then have an update throw me a curve.

Ubuntu Servers :: System Time Runs Slow Hareware Time Run Right?

Apr 11, 2011

I am running my Ubuntu 32 bit server on top of Windows 7 64 bit with VirualBox. It's a 2 core Atom. It's been working good for about half a year. But the last about 6 weeks the system time only in Ubuntu is going slow. About -8 per 24 hours! I can only guess because I have more things running in my Windows 7 and Ubuntu.

I can set it right by coping the hareware time to system time with this command:

Code:
hwclock --hctosys

I want to run a crontab to have that command run every minute. But it don't seem to run.

Ubuntu :: Screen / Everything Freezes From Time To Time For No Reason In Natty?

May 4, 2011

Ever since I installed Ubuntu Natty, from time to time, for no particular reason, the entire computer screen freezes, and I am forced to hold the power button on my laptop to restart things with a hard reset. I cannot explain why it happens.

Such an issue never occurred in any of the past installations and versions of Ubuntu. This is a fresh installation of Natty by the way.

Also, I can currently be running a lot or nothing and it does this. Thus, it does not matter what I am actually doing (ie, what programs I might be running).

It has occurred about 10 times since I freshly installed Natty 6 days ago.

Ubuntu Installation :: HDD Seems To Stop Working After Some Time

Sep 29, 2010

I recently bought a Shuttle XS-35 Mini-Barebone-PC and filled it with a 2GB Corsair RAM and a 1 TB WD Scorpion Blue Drive. After assembling all the parts I simply wanted to install Ubuntu but it simply doesn't work. However then I had the idea it would be good to kinda get the drive to a completely clean state and used the tools to safely wipe the whole HDD (by writing zeros everywhere as the tool tells me). The tool ran good for around 30 minutes but suddenly the write speed showing in the console window would go down to 0B/s (meaning basically nothing at all I suppose). I tried it 2 more times and it always came to a halt at the 10-20GB mark.

So this lead me to belief that that is also the problem while installing, that my drive doesn't want to wark anymore but rather just sleep a bit. What could be the problem? Is it a hardware error? Is there some linux system setting that could whip my HDD whenever it gets lazy? Did I do something else wrong?

I have also tried setting up Ubunto One but my system does not act like the directions online. Can I get files from my non-ubunto pc to my PC900? It seems only one way to me right now.
