Ubuntu Installation :: ThunderBird 3.1.7 Transfer From Win7 To 10.04?
Jan 11, 2011
i would like share what i did when i migrate my ThunderBird 3.1.7 including (extensions, calendar, settings, addressbook) windows 7 to ubuntu 10.04. 1. Archive(7zip) the mail database or the thunderbird folder in the windows 7 which is in the location (C:Users(Ur Username)AppDataRoaming) 2. Install the TB on your linux and open it to create the ****.default folder and the profile.ini in the home/.thunderbird/* Note: althought your windows thunderbird archive backup has the ****.default and profile.ini it doesn't work in my case when i replace or put it the the home/.thunderbird/* directory 3. When you open the TB in the first time it will create *****.default and profile.ini, dont replace or delete it as i said above, what you must do is copy all the files or content in the directory of ****.default in the windows 7 backup archive which is in location (/Thunderbird/Profiles/.default/*) to the home/.thunderbird/ all of it but first remove the content of your ******.dafault and now its almost finish 4. Start ur TB and its ok Note: In my case the lightning calendar doesn't sync to google i reinstall my lightning and provider of google extension before it work. I think this is the 5th time i migrate my TB mail from windows xp to 7 to linux..

without realising I started thunderbird from a root window, I set it up along with rules and about 2 hours finetuning.
I figured out how to get the icon on the top panel, but that is naturally started as my user gsm.
Is there an easy way of migrating the whole mailbox and subfolders form the root install to the gsm user?
Or is it easier to start from scratch?

I have transferred many emails from my hotmail account to a local folder system using Thunderbird, only to realize that I really want them in another machine. (The first time I put them into a VM). So I installed thunderbird again, and copied the whole Mail folder from the first install into the default folder of the second. Now the new thunderbird sees the folders, but will not display their contents; I have checked that the permissions are the same in the two installs. Both installs will happily download new emails from my hotmail account, but I don't really know how to transfer BACK everything in thunderbird(1) to hotmail so that I could bring it back to thunderbird(2).

I've done this a million times, so sure it is something simple. I just set up a file server with three drives. One is small and faster that houses all the system files. Then the other two are slower but larger (WD Green: variable 5,400-7,200 RPM) drives in RAID0 then encrypted using Blowfish 256-bit. Hence the performance double then hit below in the buffered reads.
Code:
Debian-Server-023 ~ # hdparm -tT /dev/sda
/dev/sda:
Timing cached reads: 1650 MB in 2.00 seconds = 825.44 MB/sec
Timing buffered disk reads: 234 MB in 3.02 seconds = 77.41 MB/sec
Debian-Server-023 ~ # hdparm -tT /dev/md0
[Code]...

Just installed Ubuntu 10.10 onto my new netbook from a USB stick. The laptop came with Win7 Starter, which I kept on a small partition. Installation was apparently successful, but when I start up the computer, it will go straight to Win7 and GRUB doesn't appear.

I had vista installed, then I installed Win7 on a dif. partition. Then I installed Ubuntu 11.4 over the vista partition (formatted first), and now I can't get into Win7. I'm really at a loss. I've tried the Win7 disk, and it doesn't detect the Win7 installation. I've also tried sudo update-grub, and it doesn't seem to detect the win7 install either. I've tried making the Win7 partition bootable using gpart as well. I'd like to dual boot Win7 and Ubuntu, however I need to do that.

This is the first time I have run into issues mounting windows shares but I really can't figure this out. Can someone put me out of my windows misery please.
First off, last week I rebuilt my work PC fromWIN7 32bit to WIN7 64bit since then I can no longer mount the window share on my ubuntu server:
I recreated my windows share called "Linux" and used the properties, advanced sharing and added everyone, full access and my domain account full access.
If I browse to \ipaddress I can see my share and access it. From a XP machine I can see the share and access it.
From linux I use the same mount point as before, /linux I use the same fstab and it fails
Code:
I try this manually now:
Code:
Next I try to mount it:
Code:
I looked at my firewall rules and they seem ok.
Next test was connecting to my 2nd pc on windows XP no probs mounted first time.
What is wrong with my new Win 7 setup?

Thanks to Lucid not working properly on i845, i855 and other 8xx chips, had to re-install Karmic on my mum's computer.I saved all the data from her old install and I ve managed to get all her old emails from thunderbird, but I cant import her address book.In Thunderbird/tools/import/addressbooks it only allows importing of LDIF, .tab, .csv and .txt files, but I cant find any of these files in any of the Thunderbird, .Thunderbird, Mozilla-Thunderbird or Mozilla folders in Home folder or anywhere, all I can find is "abook.mab" which IS supposed to be her address book, but when I try and import it the entries are blank and/or indecipherable (prob cos not a compatible file type).
Its one of those "simple" things to do, thats taken hours and hours of time, but that I cant actually find out how to do.

I had a portable apps version of Thunderbird (windows) that runs off a thumb drive and wanted to take the settings and transfer them to my Thunderbird that's on my Linux computer.
This is what I did:
First, I installed thunderbird on my Ubuntu 10.04 Linux box and opened it, and closed it (so that it would create the /home/<username>/.thunderbird folder in the user account).
Then, I renamed the linux /home/<username>/.thunderbird folder to .thunderbird_ORIGINAL
Then, I created a new /home/<username>/.thunderbird folder
Then, I took the windows e:ThunderbirdPortableDataprofile folder and copied it to the /home/<username>/.thunderbird folder.
Then, I looked into the /home/<username>/.thunderbird_ORIGINAL folder and wrote down the name of the folder with the ".default" extension.
Then, I renamed the profile folder (that came from the windows e:ThunderbirdPortableData folder) "<name-I-wrote-down>.default".
And then, I copied the profiles.ini folder from /home/<username>/.thunderbird_ORIGINAL to the /home/<username>/.thunderbird folder.
I opened up Thunderbird in Linux and everything seems fine! (I'll definitely be keeping a backup just in case)
My question is: is this fine and dandy, or a recipe for disaster?

Having a bit of a issue with Debian Squeeze and transferring files to the Sony PSP..Hook up PSP to USB port and Debian mounts it..I go to drag a 125 meg mp4 to video folder..Copy windows takes about 10 seconds to transfer it..Exit USB mode and there is no video there. Go back into USB mode and look at video folder on the PSP memory stick and there is no video..It vanished. From another after copy progress closed I right clicked PSP and unmounted it..
It error-ed saying device was busy and could not unmount..Looking at light on PSP i see memory stick is still being written to..i wait for light to stop flashing..About a minute or so..Then am able to unmount it..Go to PSP video and theres the video ready to be watched. Debian isnt accurately showing the copy progress...Its showing complete when it isnt..I have to watch the light on PSP to know when it is truly finished.

I've been dual booting Ubuntu and winxp for a few years and the Ubuntu installation in my machines has always been a matter of a few clicks, with Ubuntu recognizing my current xp installation and offering to repartition my disk to have both OSs coexist.I recently bought a new laptop (HP dv6t, win7 x64) and while trying to install Ubuntu 11.04, the installer informed me that I would have to get rid of win7 to install the new OS.
What happened to the friendly installer? Is there still an easy way to set up a dual boot in a system in which win7 is already present and an installation cd for it is not available?

using Slackware 13.0, and whenever i trasfer my files to USB, like copy or cut and paste, it will show as if file transfered in an instant, like click paste and poof.the whole 1 gig file transferred in one second, and it wont show dialog box of transfer process, and then i have to predict some minutes and wait (till the transfer actually finishes, i have to usually see my USB's transfer indicator light), if i plug out before or my prediction goes wrong, i end up with corrupted files. This aint related to window manager, as same is case for KDE and XFCE tried thunar, konqueror, midnight commander, all of em resulted with same problem.

I just installed Win7 (I need it for work -.-") and, of couse, it installed its boot loader and I can't boot F13 any longer. The question is, how do I restore GRUB from a F13 live installation media without destroying Win7?
I remeber trying something like that a couple of years before when I had the same issue:
Unfortunatelly, that doesn't work and at the next boot I am stuck with Windows again how to restore grub from a F13 live CD?

I made the MOST basic of errors. I had ubuntu 9 installed on a partition of my netbook HD that was primarily running w7. I was running out of disk space and decided to remove the ubuntu partition as a short term measure - however I didn't change any of my GRUB settings so now I can boot into anything...
In only get a GRUB RESCUE> prompt on trying to boot. From searching the internet I've come to the conclusion that my MBR is F%^ked and need to restore it. I've downloaded ubuntu 10 and can run it from a mem stick, but I cannot get the ms-sys package to install - I keep getting the following error.
ubuntu@ubuntu:~$ sudo apt-get install ms-sys
Reading package lists... Done
Building dependency tree
Reading state information... Done
E: Couldn't find package ms-sys
ubuntu@ubuntu:~$
Is there another way of removing GRUB completely? Or is there something else that I can try to successfully install ms-sys?

What is the preferred bootloader with Ubuntu 10.04 and windows 7, when multiple booting also with Vista and XP all on one hard drive and each on separate partitions? All are installed except Ubuntu and now boot with the windows boot manager. I have heard that if you install grub 2 on the MBR, then boot windows 7, that it will replace the grub boot code with windows boot code automatically. So is it best to use that NeoSmart EasyBCD tool to add Ubuntu in to the windows boot manager, and can I install grub on the boot sector of Ubuntu's root partition ?

I bought a new computer (laptop HP DV6-1375dx) and I want to set a dual boot with win7, like I did with my desktop (clean install) However, my question is, with the new laptop all I have is the rescue disks vs. having the single OEM version. IS that a problem? for the desktop I followed lifehackers article "Dual boot win7 and ubuntu in perfect harmony." no problems at all.
what I am afraid of is formatting the new hard drive and the recovery partition and not being able to use the disks for some reason....am I over-reacting?

I successfully installed windows 7 and ubuntu 9.10 and both working great together, after a while and installing some programs in ubuntu like pysdm and ntfs-3g. I even logged out and in several time successfully. But when I shut down the pc and open it again, the following two errors show up:
init failed to spawn mountall-shell post-stop process:unable to execute permission denied.
init:job-process.c 529: unhandled error from job-process-spawn permission denied.
My windows 7 still working but what about ubuntu. My volumes are Ext4.

Until very recently I was running Ubuntu 9.10 (Karmic Koala) installed on a 20 GB hard disk and Windows XP (SP3) installed on RAID 1 array of 2 x 250 GB disks, very happily along side each other and using GRUB as the bootloader installed on the smaller 20 GB drive.
I have decided to upgrade to Windows 7, and was struggling with the installation failing with the seemingly quite common "Setup was unable to create a new system partition or locate and existing partition" error. Google seaching suggested unplugging my Ubuntu drive and then installing Win 7. This worked fine with the Ubuntu drive unplugged, however with the 20 GB plugged back in I can boot to GRUB, but it still has XP in the menu, and no option for Win 7.
I think I could get around the issue by re-installing Ubuntu, which would place GRUB on the MBR which is now on the 250 GB RAID 1 array, but I would rather have the system as it was before with GRUB and Ubuntu on the 20 GB drive.
I know I need to edit GRUB to remove the XP entry from the menu, but I have no idea how I would get Win 7 into GRUB, and what to do about the MBR which Win 7 put onto the RAID 1 array.

I had 9.10 installed for a long time as a dual boot with win7 on this computer. I mostly use win7, but today i went into ubuntu and it said there was a new version available so i installed it.the error occured with the grub installation. it said if i was unsure of where to install it, i should install it on all drives, so I did. ever since then i've been looking online using this liveCD to find some solution to fix the problem, but I cant.here is what i've tried:
1. i downloaded a windows 7 repair disc and used the bootrec.exe /fixboot and /fixmbr commands, but this ends up with a blank screen with a cursor blinking.
2. I've tried re-installing grub, but this ends with the boot freezing at a screen with something like: "sh:grub>" and i can't do anything.
3. I've tried testdisk but this also didn't work for me.
i've been trying to fix this problem for 7 hours now but nothing. so i'm hoping maybe someone here would help my specific situation out.the current status of my computer: i have uninstalled grub in sda1 and sda5 (my ubuntu should be in sda5) and i used the windows7 repair CD to /fixboot and /fixmbr, so now when i boot, it freezes at a blank screen with a blinking cursor. anyone can help me, please?

I'm trying to create a dual boot with ubuntu 10.10 on my acer laptop with windows 7. I looked at my hard drive and I found out that it has three partitions, one called System Reversed, another one called PQSERVE or something like that (which is a recovery partition since acer laptops dont have a recovery cd), and the third partition is C:.
So I shrunk my C: drive, and created a 44gb partition for ubuntu, and a 6gb swap. I then booted with the ubuntu cd and went into manual partitioning. I selected the 44gb partition as "/", and set the 6gb partition to swap. The problem is at the very bottom of the partition manager, where it says "Device for boot loader installation". I get several choices, and I'm a bit unsure which one to choose.
The choices are as follows:
/dev/sda ATA WDC WD5000BEVT-2 (500,1GB)
/dev/sda1 Windows Vista (loader)
/dev/sda2 Windows 7 (loader)
/dev/sda3
/dev/sda5
/dev/sda6
My first thought was of course why do I have a vista loader? I don't even have vista!
