I'm pretty new to linux and everything, and I was wonder how I could partition my hard drive on my laptop so that I don't loose any of my data and so that I can run Kubuntu along side of windows 7.
View 1 Repliesi have ubuntu 10 and win 7 dual booting on one hdd, all of a sudden grub says error no such partition when i select windows at the boot menu. and i cant get to the win7 partition from ubuntu (to play music and stuff, this used to work, places, mount filesystem, 250 gigs whatever). i've tried the stuff in these links and nothing has worked so farpartition info

So, I just installed Ubuntu 9.10 in a different disk partition than where Windows 7 is currently installed. So, can I just go ahead and format the partition which contains Win7? Won't that compromise Ubuntu's integrity?
View 8 Replies View RelatedI just installed win 7 and now can't install fedira 13 on the partition that i made for it on the same drive. The problem is that after installation of win 7 i lost the ability to boot form cd. In bios i still have cd set up to boot first and drive second, but win 7 did something that overrides bios set up. I even tried Esc for boot menu, then i select to boot form cd, but it still boots in windows.

View 2 Replies View RelatedI would like to dual boot Ubuntu and Windows 7. I have Ubuntu 9.10 Live CD and Windows 7 Pro Live CD. Ubuntu is installed but Windows 7 isn`t. I have gparted installed. I found the following directions within Ubuntu documentation.
Master Boot Record backup and re-replacement
Back-up the existing MBR, install Windows, replace your backup overwriting the Windows boot code:
Create an NTFS partition for windows (using fdisk, GPartEd or whatever tool you are familiar with)
Backup the MBR e.g. dd if=/dev/sda of=/mbr.bin bs=446 count=1
Install windows
Boot into a LiveCD
Mount your root partition in the LiveCD
Restore the MBR e.g. dd if=/media/sda/mbr.bin of=/dev/sda bs=446 count=1
Restart and Ubuntu will boot
Setup grub to boot windows
I don't want to backup the MBR and restore as listed. I would rather use the Ubuntu Live CD to reinstall the GRUB.
How do I overwrite the MBR?
Do I use gparted and change the partition?
Do I create an NTFS partition as listed above?
Or what do I need to otherwise do to boot the Windows 7 Live CD so that it will install?
I am trying to install Ubuntu inside Windows 7 without the hassle of creating a partition. Here's what I have done: I downloaded the ubuntu-10.04-desktop-amd64.iso and then burned it onto CD. Ran Wubi from the CD. Selected "Install inside Windows". Waited for the Ubuntu installer to finish and then rebooted. Selected Ubuntu. Ubuntu starts to load and all. Then it ask me to pick which partition where to install Ubuntu. I don't want to create a partition to install Ubuntu. I want it inside Windows.

However, being uncertain of the usefulness and friendliness of it all, I decided to keep my Windows 7 partition untouched and just make a 30 Gb partition to "try out" Linux. As it turns out, it's been some 2 months since I last booted Windows and was now wondering if there's a way to "steal" some space from that W7 partition and add it to my Ubuntu one without messing up files. Some kind of major defragmentation, leaving an empty part of the disk which I could "attach" to my Ubuntu partition. I am using Ubuntu 10.04 LTS version.

I tried to install Kubuntu 11.04 using LVM, and I selected manual partitioning setup during the install, but there is no option for setting up LVM. Am I using the wrong version, i.e. it only works with the server edition? I saw somewhere that it may magically become available in expert mode...Is that true? Somewhere else it recommends using the alternate CD?Also, maybe I am attacking this the wrong way. View 2 Replies View RelatedI'm having an issue installing Ubuntu with Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit through Wubi. The Wubi installation works great and Ubuntu seems to install after the first reboot after selecting Ubuntu from Windows' boot menu, however whenever I select Ubuntu from Windows' boot menu after Ubuntu installs and it reboots for the second time, it loads the GRUB bootloader, however Ubuntu isn't listed at all.
Windows 7 is listed twice and Windows Vista is listed (seems it picks up the recovery partition for Windows 7 as Vista) and when I select the first Windows 7 from the GRUB bootloader, it just goes back to Windows' boot menu with Windows 7 and Ubuntu as the selections. If I select the second Windows 7 from the GRUB bootloader, it'll boot Windows 7 like normally. It looks like Ubuntu is nowhere to be found. Because of that, I just ended up uninstalling it.
I have Windows 7 on my laptop and am attempting to install Ubuntu 11.04 from CD.I boot from the disk drive, follow the prompts and eventually get to the screen where I can set how much space I want to give to the Ubuntu partition vs the Windows partition. My hard disk is 250GB, so I reduce the Windows one to 100GB (currently has 80GB of files on it) and set the Ubuntu one to 130GB (the other 20GB is split between the two hidden Windows 7 partitions).
I then click to continue and the progress bar for the install starts up but doesn't move, it just sits at 0%. I realised that the dialogue box underneath the progress bar can still be expanded and asks me to test using -n and -s, but when I type either of these into the box and hit return, nothing happens. I have checked my download of the .iso I used using WinMD5Sum and the hash matches up. I have already tried installing from USB but this threw an error, hence using CD. My laptop is a Dell Inspiron 1546 running Win 7 Home Premium 64 bit Processor: AMD Turion X2 Dual-Core Mobile RM-75 2.20GHz
I had my Laptop, a Dell Inspiron 1520, running Windows 7 and Windows XP - I had a few gigs of unallocated space, so I decided to install Kubuntu alongside it, worked fine no problem, with the exception of running out of space very quickly - I got fed up with it, and installed Kubuntu over the Windows XP partition (around 80gigs, and the first OS to be installed on the computer). After I installed it.
All was working perfectly until I rebooted to discover I am missing my Windows 7 boot option in GRUB, before I had to press Windows XP Embedded and it opened the boot dialog, but here I dont get the option, is there a GRUB 2 option I can change to allow it to show Windows 7? The Computer works perfectly, it's just the GRUB doesn't show Windows 7, and I'm hesitant to format its old partition and reinstall it due to the fact that it may over ride the grub and leave me without Kubuntu access?
I need to setup a network. Wireless. There is a toshiba A100 satelite with Kubuntu 10.10/win7 a desktop win7 and a desktop ubuntu 10.10/win 7. I just cannot figure out how to make all these pcs communicate, regardless of te OS. (on win7 they all work fine)

View 9 Replies View RelatedI had vista installed, then I installed Win7 on a dif. partition. Then I installed Ubuntu 11.4 over the vista partition (formatted first), and now I can't get into Win7. I'm really at a loss. I've tried the Win7 disk, and it doesn't detect the Win7 installation. I've also tried sudo update-grub, and it doesn't seem to detect the win7 install either. I've tried making the Win7 partition bootable using gpart as well. I'd like to dual boot Win7 and Ubuntu, however I need to do that.

View 9 Replies View RelatedI'm trying to copy kubuntu from a old disk to a partition on a new hard disk. I used the command:
cp -apx /mnt/source /mnt/dest
I also edited fstab and changed the uuid to the correct partition, rebuild grub, and rebooted. When booting the kubuntu in the new partition, the sysytem still refers to the old partition (which is much smaller). ie: df displays the old partition. Is there another config file that has to be edited?
I'm using 9.10 on a laptop that has Win7 in another partition. Within Win7 I get strong full bars for the wifi signal strength. On the same laptop in the same location, I get only 2 bars (low) wifi signal strength when I'm in Ubuntu 9.10.
I'm using the wifi transceiver built into my Acer Aspire 5732Z laptop.
Today I was messing around with my partitions, and I decided to shrink my main partition that had Windows on it, so that I would could have one big storage partition and then a Windows 7 one and a Ubuntu one. Well, it didn't really work so I decided just to wait for Lucid to come out and start with a fresh install. So I went into EASEUS Partition Manager and resized my main Windows 7 partition back to its normal size. It had to reboot and did its stuff, and then when I restarted my computer, grub was showing the grub rescue> thing. So I went into the Windows 7 recovery disk, and tried all the BootRec.exe options. None of those worked. So I decided to go to the extreme and just delete Ubuntu completely.
I deleted the entire partition with GParted and then resized the main partition all the way. Then I booted into a Ubuntu live usb and re-installed Ubuntu. I thought it would just reinstall Grub and I would be able to get to both Ubuntu and Windows 7. It did install Grub, but now I can only boot into Ubuntu. It's really weird, because I can boot into windows, it just says starting windows and does the loading thing. And then EASEUS Partition Manager comes and says that all resize operations were complete successfully(because I hadn't booted into windows since I resized stuff with it) and then the screen just stays black for a long time. I don't know what to do. If I wait long enough, my computer just reboots...
How do you make Windows 7 see my Linux partition in it. I want to run some mp3s and avi's from Windows 7.

I looked it up, put some code into a LiveCD terminal, and I thought it worked. But now, I says that I definitely need to put in a Windows 7 CD and do that MBR fix method. I did not own a Windows 7 CD; my laptop came with it pre-installed, and I have no recovery partition anymore.
I have Ubuntu 10.10 installed along side of Windows 7 on the same partition. I'm a bit of a noob as I have only recently got serious about using Ubuntu daily. I was wondering how I could go about expanding the space Ubuntu can use seeing as how I don't have it set up as a separate partition.
View 5 Replies View RelatedAs a big supporter of Ubuntu, after installing Ubuntu 10.10 on my mums laptop i decided to also install it on my sisters Acer Aspire one netbook.
The specific netbook had pre-installed Win7 starter. Everything went really smooth with the installation with ubuntu 10.10, Grub menu was also loading pretty well but when i chose to load on windows it loads the recovery partition of the hard drive.
The issue is that the netbook, like most netbooks and laptops, has a hidden partition which is used to recover Windows on the system. My Grub2 loader added this partition as an option to load windows with result me not be able to boot on windows ...well i do can load but it loads the recovery of windows.
I have to operating systems installed, Ubuntu 10.10 and Windows 7, working perfectly. I also have a partition, currently empty, to be shared between both OS, but I would like that partition to be encrypted.
View 2 Replies View RelatedI just installed windows 7 and ubuntu stopped booting even though it was still there, so I thought I would just change the partition flag to boot. I found out later that I had to create a new mbr but after I changed the boot flag, windows 7 stopped booting and I tried changing it back, but it didnt work. So I was wondering if i didn't use the correct flags or is there another way to get windows 7 to boot again? I was using GParted to change the partition flags and that i am using windows 7 ultimate 64bit

I previously installed windows 7 in my laptop and i would like to have ubuntu and windows 7 in dual boot. in order to do that i need to free up some space to be able to install to create partitions for ubuntu and the swap even if I have 30GB of unused space.
When i launch the live cD and i reach the step 4 ubuntu is actually recognising three operating systems installed:
- windows 7 (loader) under dev/sda1 (92,86GB) NTFS
- windows NT/2000/XP (which is corresponding to my "HP recovery" partition) under dev/sda2 en FAT32 (6,2GB)
- windows XP embedded (I don't unerstand what it is) under dev/sda3 NTFS (1,1GB)
when I go to the step 6 to modify the size of sda1 to free up some space, i don't have the possibility to change it, i can read "unknown" under the used space collumn.
I also tried to resize this partition using gparted but unfortunately i had the same problem, when i select it all the options to modify it are greyed out and i can notice a key near the hard drive logo (is it locked ?).
I have been using fedora 12 for quite some time. When i first installed Fedora on my new system i created 2 ntfs partitions on the hard disk using mkfs.ntfs and in the space at the end of the disk i have Fedora. recently i tried installing Win7 but it didnt recognise the partitions even tho they are NTFS. I had to format 1st partition from setup to install Win7. After boot i find that Win7 doesn't recognise the 2nd partition as welL. The partitions are working fine in Fedora.

Windows XP - NTFS 50 GB
Windows 7 - NTFS 350 GB
Linux Ubuntu - 98 GB
Linux swap - 2GB
The last OS that I have installed was Windows 7, and each time, when I started up my PC, I saw GRUB first, and after choosing the option to load windows, the Windows loader giving me 2 options, one for Windows 7 and one for Windows XP. I didn't like to see first GRUB and after that the windows loader, it was redundant, but everything was working well. One day, I decided to mix the windows 7 and the windows XP partitions (deleting the windows XP and resizing windows 7). I tried to do that with the Windows 7 utility included in the control panel but I couldn't. It said that I couldn't delete the active partition or something like that. It was not possible to delete the partition in which WinXP was stored.
Then, I decided to boot with Ubuntu and use the partitioning tool that comes with it to delete the WinXP partition. It was possible to delete the partition, and I also putted the option "bootable" on the 350GB Windows 7 partition. After that, I rebooted and it was not possible to load windows. Then I tried changing in GRUB the entry for Windows, because I thought if I could put the correct partition to load from, it wouldn't be more problems. I tried several times but I couldn't load windows, so I putted the Windows 7 DVD and I started the installation process, waiting to see an option saying that there was already a system in the partition of 350GB, and allowing me to fix the mbr in that partition.
My surprise was when I choose the partition of 350GB and the installation process began. I was afraid of to lose my data then I decided to reset the computer! And now, all my 350GB disk is gone! I can't see the partition when I enter with Ubuntu. I'm really worried about this, because the computer detects the 350GB partition as empty, and I don't know what to do! I turned off the computer and now I am using another to write this. I have all my files and important information in that partition! and It seems it's lost. I hope it's still possible to restore the partition. Actually I don't care if I have to install again my operating systems but I need my information!
I used to have three partitions: Win7, Fedora 12 and a NTFS-Storage-Partition.Now I had to reinstall Win7, it doesn't see any files on the storage partition;Windows shows the whole rest of the disk including the linux partition as one drive with 7gb of 80gb free, I can also open it but then there is nothing in it.Linux is still working and everything on the storage partition is still there and accessible in linux.any suggestions? do i have to tell windows the partitions or does it have to do a scan or something?
View 2 Replies View RelatedI am new to linux , I installed Suse 11.3 a week ago on my new iMac 27'' core i7 and my experience have been wonderful so far. However I would like to install windows beside Suse (for games and windows only apps). I used bootcamp to create a 200G partition for Suse, and I would like to partition the bootcamp further to install windows beside Suse, and choose the OS at boot time using rEFIt. I searched google and couldn't find a guide for installing windows 7 when linux is installed first.
1- I want to learn how to partition the boot camp drive using suse to create an empty partition for windows install.
2- I want to learn how to install windows 7 on the mentioned partition without harming any boot configurations, as I said I want to be able to choose from the OSes at boot time using rEFIt bare in mind that the current installed OSes are suse 11.3 and OS X.
