I cannot get windows 7 to install with my DVD its damaged, I have an iso downloaded and was wondering if there any tools that I can use from inside ubuntu 10.04 to get it onto and boot from a usb?

I successfully installed windows 7 and ubuntu 9.10 and both working great together, after a while and installing some programs in ubuntu like pysdm and ntfs-3g. I even logged out and in several time successfully. But when I shut down the pc and open it again, the following two errors show up:
init failed to spawn mountall-shell post-stop process:unable to execute permission denied.
init:job-process.c 529: unhandled error from job-process-spawn permission denied.
My windows 7 still working but what about ubuntu. My volumes are Ext4.
Until very recently I was running Ubuntu 9.10 (Karmic Koala) installed on a 20 GB hard disk and Windows XP (SP3) installed on RAID 1 array of 2 x 250 GB disks, very happily along side each other and using GRUB as the bootloader installed on the smaller 20 GB drive.
I have decided to upgrade to Windows 7, and was struggling with the installation failing with the seemingly quite common "Setup was unable to create a new system partition or locate and existing partition" error. Google seaching suggested unplugging my Ubuntu drive and then installing Win 7. This worked fine with the Ubuntu drive unplugged, however with the 20 GB plugged back in I can boot to GRUB, but it still has XP in the menu, and no option for Win 7.
I think I could get around the issue by re-installing Ubuntu, which would place GRUB on the MBR which is now on the 250 GB RAID 1 array, but I would rather have the system as it was before with GRUB and Ubuntu on the 20 GB drive.
I know I need to edit GRUB to remove the XP entry from the menu, but I have no idea how I would get Win 7 into GRUB, and what to do about the MBR which Win 7 put onto the RAID 1 array.
I was wondering if I can tri boot Win 7, ubuntu, and fedora. I installed windows7 first, then ubuntu 10.10, and thinking of ferdora. I am and using the windows boot manager at the start up. So, do you think I could just install fedora and my system will be fine?

Its updated when I restart it is showing two fedora 12 booting option along with windos7. how to remove one. But all the options are working, I am pasting the menu.lst file below.

I can dual-boot on my PC by using my SATA drive for Windows & a second IDE (PATA) one for Ubuntu.However when I try to install both OS's on the Primary SATA drive side by side only one is detected (and I have no option to boot the other).
I have a friend with the same problem who is trying to boot Win7 and Ubuntu off the same SATA drive and the same issue occurs on his (He doesn't have the second drive as an option as I do).
Does anyone know a way to get side by side installation to work on one (SATA) drive? Failing this is it possible to boot Ubuntu off and External hard drive and still be able to dual boot Windows & Ubuntu?
Just installed Ubuntu 10.10 onto my new netbook from a USB stick. The laptop came with Win7 Starter, which I kept on a small partition. Installation was apparently successful, but when I start up the computer, it will go straight to Win7 and GRUB doesn't appear.

I'm really at a loss. I've tried the Win7 disk, and it doesn't detect the Win7 installation. I've also tried sudo update-grub, and it doesn't seem to detect the win7 install either. I've tried making the Win7 partition bootable using gpart as well. I'd like to dual boot Win7 and Ubuntu, however I need to do that.

(i have done this before but not with win7.) can i go into disk management and reduce the win 7 volume by say 50 gb. format it fat32 and install ubuntu. and still have dual-boot? thanks in advance. i plan on using either ubuntu 9.04 or 9.10.

I might have gone wrong by accidentally making the hard disk 'dynamic' after shrinking the windows partition. Upon booting the computer up after the 11.04 installation, Win7 gave me a 0xc0000225 error. The built in hard drive recovery didn't work and neither have multiple win7 64b recovery disks I have downloaded. A gparted live cd wouldn't boot. On attempting to reinstall 11.04 (so I can just get rid of win7), the installation freezes when it tries to recognize the state of my hard drive.
I've basically turned to dban, but that won't even work. The latest version gives me an error of "no configuration file found" and 1.0.7 give me "non-fatal error", even when I attempt to auto-nuke.
Am I out a hard drive?
I m duel booting slack and kubntu. and i want to install win7 for my internet connection conflagration. i fist installed slack on my 160 hdd and then i installed kubuntu, and that was easy cause ubuntu offered me to choose how much i space i want for it and thats it! it installed autometically. but now i want to install win 7 any idea how i m gonna do this ?
View 7 Replies View Relatedi decided to install ubuntu in my PC,i downloaded the .ISO image and i installed it in my USB. After trying it and all that i observed that i really liked it and i decided to formally install it to my computer in the hard drive. When i reached the partition thing,i selected to dual boot with Vista and select between each them in every startup,when i clicked FORWARD it gave me an error which i did not read(because,again im a noob) so i clicked cancel.
Today i wanted to go through the process again and now really install it,so again i went to the time zone part and i clicked forward but then,instead of taking me straight to the partition phase,it appeard a window saying "The installer has detected that the following disks have mounted partitions: /dev/sda ...." I clicked yes,to unmount this partitions so it took me to the partition thing,once there i selected the option to install Ubuntu with Vista and select between them i neach startup,then i clicked forward and went to the username/computer name process,once i finished i continued to the next part,the installation,but i selected to import all of my WIndows VIsta default user data,after that i clicked forward and went to the installation process,i went down stairs to eat soemthing while it finishes,i came back and it was finished,it asked me to reboot so i clicked in Restart Now.
When it tried to boot,appeared an error saying: Error: no such devide found: #################### Grub load(or something like that) grub rescue: and it was a command line,since there i havent been able to boot into vista or Ubuntu,im really scared because is the first thing related to OS installing ive done,so i booted my USB and ran the trial and right now im trying to find out what to do from that trial version.
I just went to the INSTALL UBUNTU 10.04 LTS application under the System>Administration Menu and found out that in the partition phase the Install and allow to select between both systems in eahc startup option,i dont know what to do,i foudn out that my HD has still all its data(MUsic/Videos/Folders/Programs/ect.)its just that i cannot boot from it. i have ubuntu 10 and win 7 dual booting on one hdd, all of a sudden grub says error no such partition when i select windows at the boot menu. and i cant get to the win7 partition from ubuntu (to play music and stuff, this used to work, places, mount filesystem, 250 gigs whatever). i've tried the stuff in these links and nothing has worked so farpartition info

This is the first time I have run into issues mounting windows shares but I really can't figure this out. Can someone put me out of my windows misery please.
First off, last week I rebuilt my work PC fromWIN7 32bit to WIN7 64bit since then I can no longer mount the window share on my ubuntu server:
I recreated my windows share called "Linux" and used the properties, advanced sharing and added everyone, full access and my domain account full access.
If I browse to \ipaddress I can see my share and access it. From a XP machine I can see the share and access it.
From linux I use the same mount point as before, /linux I use the same fstab and it fails

I looked at my firewall rules and they seem ok.
Next test was connecting to my 2nd pc on windows XP no probs mounted first time.
What is wrong with my new Win 7 setup?
I've searched around but did not get any good tutorial that can explain me hoe to do this. I installed ubuntu 10.10 in hd0,sda7 file system ext4.installed burg for better ui.Everything was working fine since I reinstalled windows in c: drive (that is hd0,sda1). How can I restore burg?
View 1 Replies View RelatedI've been dual booting Ubuntu and winxp for a few years and the Ubuntu installation in my machines has always been a matter of a few clicks, with Ubuntu recognizing my current xp installation and offering to repartition my disk to have both OSs coexist.I recently bought a new laptop (HP dv6t, win7 x64) and while trying to install Ubuntu 11.04, the installer informed me that I would have to get rid of win7 to install the new OS.
What happened to the friendly installer? Is there still an easy way to set up a dual boot in a system in which win7 is already present and an installation cd for it is not available?
I just installed Win7 (I need it for work -.-") and, of couse, it installed its boot loader and I can't boot F13 any longer. The question is, how do I restore GRUB from a F13 live installation media without destroying Win7?

I installed Windows 7 First then give partition space of 25 GB for my Ubuntu. However, I prefer using Windows 7 BootLoader instead of using Ubuntu BootLoader.

I was running out of disk space and decided to remove the ubuntu partition as a short term measure - however I didn't change any of my GRUB settings so now I can boot into anything...
In only get a GRUB RESCUE> prompt on trying to boot. From searching the internet I've come to the conclusion that my MBR is F%^ked and need to restore it. I've downloaded ubuntu 10 and can run it from a mem stick, but I cannot get the ms-sys package to install - I keep getting the following error.

What is the preferred bootloader with Ubuntu 10.04 and windows 7, when multiple booting also with Vista and XP all on one hard drive and each on separate partitions? All are installed except Ubuntu and now boot with the windows boot manager. I have heard that if you install grub 2 on the MBR, then boot windows 7, that it will replace the grub boot code with windows boot code automatically. So is it best to use that NeoSmart EasyBCD tool to add Ubuntu in to the windows boot manager, and can I install grub on the boot sector of Ubuntu's root partition ?

IS that a problem? for the desktop I followed lifehackers article "Dual boot win7 and ubuntu in perfect harmony." no problems at all.
what I am afraid of is formatting the new hard drive and the recovery partition and not being able to use the disks for some reason....am I over-reacting?
So, I just installed Ubuntu 9.10 in a different disk partition than where Windows 7 is currently installed. So, can I just go ahead and format the partition which contains Win7? Won't that compromise Ubuntu's integrity?
View 8 Replies View RelatedI had 9.10 installed for a long time as a dual boot with win7 on this computer. I mostly use win7, but today i went into ubuntu and it said there was a new version available so i installed it.the error occured with the grub installation. it said if i was unsure of where to install it, i should install it on all drives, so I did. ever since then i've been looking online using this liveCD to find some solution to fix the problem, but I cant.here is what i've tried:
1. i downloaded a windows 7 repair disc and used the bootrec.exe /fixboot and /fixmbr commands, but this ends up with a blank screen with a cursor blinking.
2. I've tried re-installing grub, but this ends with the boot freezing at a screen with something like: "sh:grub>" and i can't do anything.
3. I've tried testdisk but this also didn't work for me.
i've been trying to fix this problem for 7 hours now but nothing. so i'm hoping maybe someone here would help my specific situation out.the current status of my computer: i have uninstalled grub in sda1 and sda5 (my ubuntu should be in sda5) and i used the windows7 repair CD to /fixboot and /fixmbr, so now when i boot, it freezes at a blank screen with a blinking cursor. anyone can help me, please?
because I formatted the linux partition where the ubuntu install was, and I can't install it again. If I start wubi, it tells me please first uninstall. I go to the uninstaller, it pops up with an error:

I'm trying to create a dual boot with ubuntu 10.10 on my acer laptop with windows 7. I looked at my hard drive and I found out that it has three partitions, one called System Reversed, another one called PQSERVE or something like that (which is a recovery partition since acer laptops dont have a recovery cd), and the third partition is C:.
So I shrunk my C: drive, and created a 44gb partition for ubuntu, and a 6gb swap. I then booted with the ubuntu cd and went into manual partitioning. I selected the 44gb partition as "/", and set the 6gb partition to swap. The problem is at the very bottom of the partition manager, where it says "Device for boot loader installation". I get several choices, and I'm a bit unsure which one to choose.
The choices are as follows:
/dev/sda ATA WDC WD5000BEVT-2 (500,1GB)
/dev/sda1 Windows Vista (loader)
/dev/sda2 Windows 7 (loader)
/dev/sda3
/dev/sda5
/dev/sda6
My first thought was of course why do I have a vista loader? I don't even have vista!
I'm pretty new to linux and everything, and I was wonder how I could partition my hard drive on my laptop so that I don't loose any of my data and so that I can run Kubuntu along side of windows 7.
View 1 Replies View RelatedI had win 7 installed, decided to install ubuntu on this desktop computer. I had a windows partition, and a few other partitions, one with a wubi install of windows that I never used, so I decided to delete it, while installing ubuntu 10.10. I had free unallocated space for installing ubuntu, which was contiguous to the partition of the wubi install of ubuntu, so I decided to merge them, I did all this in gparted while installing ubuntu 10.10, 2gb swap, then 15gb root and all that remained to home.
Everything worked out fine (of course I never touched the win7 partition). After reboot grub doesn't show win 7, so I thought I'll just add it to grub, followed a few tutorials on this forum, but nothing worked. Then I remembered that the partition which I deleted to merge with the ubuntu partition, was an Active partition, and soon found out that my win7 partition was not active! (this is probably because I installed win 7 while I had still win vista, so that active partition was where vista was).
So now a ~100mb apparently unallocated partition was the active partition (win 7 hidden boot partition?), and trying the Startup repair of win 7 cd doesn't work, tried bootrec /fixboot, successfully, but bootrec /rebuildbcd can't find any Windows installation, even after setting the win7 partition as active with DiskPart. This is almost entirely a windows problem, but I just wanted to have Ubuntu working alongside Windows (I use a lot adobe's sw, which runs sadly only on windows, otherwise I would use only ubuntu).
I want to create a dual boot between Windows 7 and Ubuntu. I have done the following:
1. I installed Win7 on my second SATA drive WD740AD.
2. Then I installed Ubuntu on my first SATA drive WD5000A.
When I boot my machine, the machine will always boot linux. I can't even choose Windows 7. My knowledge of Linux is very limited. I have looked for information on the web and found some information about grub but I cant make it work. Mostly all the information is about installing Win7 and Linux on 1 HDD.
