Ubuntu Installation :: Testing Live Cd On Old Computer - GUI Does Not Come Up

Jun 11, 2010

I had tried a previous version of ubuntu on this same machine a couple years ago. Version 7.xx I think. That live cd would boot up into the GUI okay although it was still kind of slow. Fast forward to now, I am trying to boot my machine from an xubuntu cd version 10.04. The GUI does not come up and I am only presented with a terminal. When I try to start the GUI (startxfce4) I eventually see a message that the monitor/video does not support color depth 24. Believe it or not, I still have that older version of ubuntu so I tried it again and sure enough it still works.

So here is what I have noticed is different. On the older version of ubuntu it appears to be using the 'glint' video driver. The new version of xubuntu is using the 'vesa' driver. I tried changing this by creating an xorg.conf file and adding a driver line specifying 'glint'. After trying to start the GUI with that change I get an error saying that the glint module could not be loaded.

So finally to my question, is the glint video driver loaded by default in xubuntu? I see it's package listed under xubuntu. I even tried installing the package myself using apt-get and that seemed to work. It went through some steps and did not report any errors but I still get the same error afterwards.

What do I need to in order to use the glint video driver with xubuntu 10.04? Of course, the other issue is that the install does not recognize my wireless card either so there is no internet access on this machine. Oh yeah, the video card in the machine is a 3DLabs Permedia 2 (it looks like ubuntu recognizes it as a Texas Instruments but still permedia 2).

When I selected in the GRUB screen "Try Ubuntu" or "Install" and hit Enter, the screen goes blank and the system freezes.

I had this issue before with Ubuntu 10.10 and I decided to wait until 11.04 but looks like the issue remains.

Ubuntu Installation :: Computer Date/Time Change - 9.10 Live ISO

Apr 6, 2010

I am using Grub4Dos to boot Ubuntu 9.10 Desktop Live CD. In the menu.lst i made the following changes.

Quote:

title Ubuntu LiveCD 9.10
find --set-root /ubuntu-9.10-desktop-i386.iso
map /ubuntu-9.10-desktop-i386.iso (0xff)
map --hook
root (0xff)
....

The code runs fine and Ubuntu loads also from the ISO stored in the C: drive of my system.

The problem is when Ubuntu loads it changes my clock time. I have set the timezone to Indian Standard Time. Since it is live CD it should not make any changes in the system however, it does change the Data/Time of my system.

I then reformatted back to Windows XP and try top set up a dual boot system but the same results!, no data on my hard drive from Ubuntu!!. I then installed a new hard drive and tried a new dual boot installation but with the same results, what is stopping the machine form installing Ubuntu

Debian :: Cannot Restart Computer - Testing KDE

Apr 4, 2011

I have a slight problem. I think it is corrupted file(s).

My Debian Testing KDE is not functioning properly. When I Leave and click Restart Computer, the computer does not go to a reboot but goes to the KDE login screen. When I cold boot the computer and click Restart Computer from the KDE login window, the same thing happens, the login window reappears.

When I choose Turn Off Computer, the computer properly powers down.

It looks like I should re-install something but what that something is I don't know. I checked the boot and dmesg logs. Nothing leaps of the screen at me but I have to admit that I am not 100% sure what I am looking for.

General :: Getting Computer To Boot From Two Different Live Cds?

Oct 26, 2009

I'm having trouble getting my computer to boot from two different linux live cds, and I'm looking for ideas. Last night, I downloaded both Damn Small and Puppy linux to my emac and burned disk images of both. When I tried to boot my Dell Inspiron 8100 with them, they both appeared to work at first, but then both stopped booting part way through the process. I've run this computer on an earlier live cd version of Puppy without any problems before, and the fact that neither disk works leads me to believe I did something wrong when burning them.

I downloaded the iso files for both Puppy and Damn Small and burned these as images each to their own disk. This all I remember doing before, and I like I said, it worked in the past. I'll post more details later in the day--like where the boot process actually stops and what versions of each system I downloaded, but if this rings any bells for anyone.

Ubuntu Installation :: Can't Get A Vista Box To Recognize Live CD Or Live USB

Sep 8, 2010

I've done a good few ubuntu installations for friends and colleagues and now my Dad wants in on the action. His PC is more than capable of running ubuntu 32 bit BUT I've hit a brick wall I've never come across before. I've burnt a CD image of the 10.04 iso from on my ubuntu box and for some reason, his PC just won't boot from it. If I select the option to manually select the boot source, all I see is the hardware monitor telling me things like CPU temperature. As for the Live USB - nothing whatsoever. Is it possible that I've managed to corrupt the iso file somehow?

Ubuntu Installation :: 11.04 Live CD And Live Stick Not Working

Apr 28, 2011

Live CD: I dowloaded the ISO, burned it to CD, booted from this CD. It starts to load and I can see the purple background with the loading icons. Everything seems normal. But instead of ending up with the login screen, it ends up with a screen that says 'Please remove all bootup media and hit ENTER' or something like this. So I hit enter and then it shuts off my computer. That's it.

Live Stick: So I tried another option and created a stick with 'usb-creator.exe' that is on the CD. Then I start from that stick, but all I end up is a line of 'Syslinux bla bla copyright 20xx-2011'. That's it. Then it does nothing anymore. The cursor is blinking, but no prompt or whatsoever and keyboard input doesn't do anything.

Now something weird: When I insert Live CD and Live Stick at the same time and then boot my computer, then it boots into Ubuntu. Obviously it loads the first parts from CD and then the rest from stick. Because when I'm then in Ubuntu and try to format the stick, it says it can't do so, because there's system files from that stick in use.

General :: Computer Freezes During Its Install From Live Cd / Sort This?

Jan 22, 2010

I'm new to the Linux scene. My school computer has linux and it works great, and I'm trying to get into programming, so I figured it'd be good to switch over to Linux (plus I just got a new computer, so it's a good time).

But, I don't know much about how to install it. I've burned a live cd from sourceforge (actually 2: the newest version and one older). I shut off the computer and put the cd in the drive, and then when I turn my computer back on I get the expected menu. I choose my language, and then it brings me to a screen with a few options: "Try Ubuntu without any changes to your computer", "Install Ubuntu", "Check disc for defects", "Test Memory", and "Boot from first hard disk" (plus some options at the bottom of the screen). I've tried every option on the menu, with both cds, but whenever I select anything, it freezes up right away. I've let it sit for 15-20 minutes, and nothing happens, so I'm pretty sure it's not me being impatient

I've also put the disc in while windows is running. When I double-click on my D-drive (in my computer) I get the error message "No cd detected, cannot run cd menu".

I'd be content running a different version of linux, I'd just like to have linux running (although I want it separate from Windows, I don't want Wubi). I'd like to be able to dual-boot, but I'd be willing to give up Windows entirely too. So, any ideas? Anything I can try? Oh, and I'm pretty inexperienced at this, so ask me if you need more details, and please respond in basic terms

Debian Installation :: Testing : Way Back Home?

Jan 22, 2010

Now that I've destroyed the installation on my notebook, and a fresh install of Lenny with upgrade to Squeeze (to try out smxi) didn't work, I wanted to install Squeeze fresh. But not from a CD. That's too tired, and I've never actually installed from a USB stick. So I set out to do this, for it doesn't seem hard at all:

http://d-i.alioth.debian.org/manual/en. ... 04s03.html

I even get to use cool-sounding commands like zcat, so this is way hipper than burning CDs, of which I have far too many lying around. Now here's the thing, it boots up and gets started, but the versions of don't match. I got both of them from the Debian-Installer page from netinst , both amd64, specifically: http://d-i.debian.org/daily-images/amd6 ... oot.img.gz (30 MB, don't click)
and http://cdimage.debian.org/cdimage/daily ... etinst.iso (139 MB, don't click)

How on man's green web, then,do I make sure that I match up the correct versions of the netinstall image and the installer files?hangs head and slooowly reaches for CD spindle...

CentOS 5 :: Testing Installation - Image File Not Running

Jul 12, 2009

Before installing Centos, I downloaded an image file and burned it to CD using InfraRecorder. It starts to run but does not complete. My machine is a new Intel Q6600 Core 2 Quad CPU with 4G of RAM. It is a 64-bit machine, and I used the 64-bit image. After Centos (which I tried first) failed, I then tried (using the same burning software):

o Slackware
o UBuntu
o gNewSense
o Knoppix
o Debian
o Fedora
o Suse
o BSD
o Solaris
0 puppy Linux

Most failed similarly to Centos. Knoppix worked fully several times, but I was not enthusiastic about installing it, and eventually (on the 5th iteration), it started to fail in a way similar to Centos, and continues so. Solaris and PuppyLinux worked. Those that failed, failed while attempting to start the 4 CPUs. Solaris and Knoppix (when it worked) succeeded in starting all 4 cpus and I could see the messages.

How to communicate what's happening during a failed boot? Finally, I hit upon the idea of photographing the screen during the failing part of the boot; the file is attached. The photo shows the screen just before it blanks, and the BIOS resets for another try. Please let me know if I can collect any other information. I would like to use Centos as a dual boot on my shiny new machine.
