General :: Testing - Live CD For Burn-in With Bonnie++?
Mar 31, 2010
Is there a live linux distro that I can use for burn-in? I'd like something that has Bonnie++ on it. I've found other live CDs that have utilities, but nothing with bonnie++ on it.

I had tried a previous version of ubuntu on this same machine a couple years ago. Version 7.xx I think. That live cd would boot up into the GUI okay although it was still kind of slow. Fast forward to now, I am trying to boot my machine from an xubuntu cd version 10.04. The GUI does not come up and I am only presented with a terminal. When I try to start the GUI (startxfce4) I eventually see a message that the monitor/video does not support color depth 24. Believe it or not, I still have that older version of ubuntu so I tried it again and sure enough it still works.
So here is what I have noticed is different. On the older version of ubuntu it appears to be using the 'glint' video driver. The new version of xubuntu is using the 'vesa' driver. I tried changing this by creating an xorg.conf file and adding a driver line specifying 'glint'. After trying to start the GUI with that change I get an error saying that the glint module could not be loaded.
So finally to my question, is the glint video driver loaded by default in xubuntu? I see it's package listed under xubuntu. I even tried installing the package myself using apt-get and that seemed to work. It went through some steps and did not report any errors but I still get the same error afterwards.
What do I need to in order to use the glint video driver with xubuntu 10.04? Of course, the other issue is that the install does not recognize my wireless card either so there is no internet access on this machine. Oh yeah, the video card in the machine is a 3DLabs Permedia 2 (it looks like ubuntu recognizes it as a Texas Instruments but still permedia 2).

Is possible to burn an ISO to a CD while logged into a Live CD session? The issue is I'm logged in on an old 7.10 Live CD and would like to burn a 10.10 CD to do a reinstall after my hard drive broke. I realize of course the system runs from the 7.10 CD, but if it's possible to keep the system running from memory while burning or something.
There are no disc burning tools in the Applications menu, but wodim appears to be available at least, so if there's a way I would seem to have a tool to do the actual burning anyway.

I decided I'm going to go back to a dual boot to see if I can get some of the slackware issues resolved on my laptop; its ubuntu only at the moment due to wireless problems. I've only got one hard drive so I can't simply unmount and repartition from gparted, I've lost all of my random linux live cds, and can't find a spare blank optical disc. Is there a way to boot from directly from the iso or from a flash drive or something?

I just installed openSUSE 64 bit and have it up and running. Great looking OS. I have four questions, not sure if I should post four threads, or ask all in here. I'm familiar with the Gnome GUI, but this is my first experience with KDE. Want to learn something new.
one: I installed the benchmark bonnie, and now can not find it. I've looked in just about every folder and can't seem to locate it.
two: I looked for the benchmark Hardinfo to install and the installer was unable to locate it. How do I find it, it is not in the package manager.
three: I install the bubble monitor desktop applet and can't figure out how to bring it up, the setting menu is in the upper right on the desktop. How do you turn on the display?
forth: Where do you set your signature in this forum? I went through the setting and couldn't find it.
This is the forth Linux OS I've installed and this was the cleanest and smoothest install yet, Debian could take some lessons at least on the install app, 5 out out 5 stars on the install package. So far I've been able to configure everything the way I want with the exceptions above. Below is my system info just in case that matters. openSUSE 64bit KDE,LMDE 64bit Gnome,Squeeze64bit Gnome - HP Compaq dc5700 MT desktop w/ Intel Core 2 Duo 6400 2.13GHz, 3.6GB DDR2 SDRAM, Intel 82Q963/Q965 Integrated Graphics Controller

I just downloaded OpenSuse 11.1 64 bit live cd from it's official site.I have live usb creater in my xp box , with the help of which I successfully created live USB for fedora 11 earlier. Now the problem is whenever I try to create live usb using Opensuse live ISO image after extracting all files to usb , it gets failed. The same thing is happening with OpenSolaris 11 live cd iso image. Does this mean that live usb creater I have, was only foe Fedora distros?

I have never burned a DVD to be used on a Linux box before. If I am burning a CD using a Windows program (not built-in burning), is there anything special I need to be aware of to make sure the DVD will be able to be read on Linux?

I was attempting to burn an .iso using dd, I had used it before and remembered it being quite simple.
However I tried it today with:
I noticed it finished very quickly and now the cdr1 file inside /dev is six hundred megs or so. I don't think I can get the old file back so am wondering if I will need to reinstall, or if I should delete that file maybe it will rebuild on start up?
Should have I used another terminal command for burning .iso's to disk? What might the correct command be?

Does anyone else have unusual trouble burning ISOs to CD-RWs? When I want to make a new liveCD of a distro--or, really, any data that I might not want to keep in its current form--I like to burn to CD-RWs because I can erase and reuse them. Frugality. But I have a very high frequency of errors when I try to burn a distro to a CD-RW. Sometimes it ruins the CD-RW: after the error disrupts the burning, K3B starts telling me the disc is now a CD-ROM and can't be erased. I just lost three CD-RWs to that--damn it. And they weren'd old, failing CD-RWs: two had slight use, and one was brand new. Should I not be burning distro ISOs to CD-RWs?

I sometimes get downloads, usually of linux OS's where the file is too large for a cd and has to be formated as a dvd. When I try to burn it to a disk, I keep getting something that says I need to insert a blank dvd.
Problem is, I have a blank dvd in the tray all ready to go. The unit I'm using is a Sony external dvd burner hooked up by a usb. Bresero wouldn't touch it, so I installed k3b (this is in Ubuntu10.04) k3b could read that I had a blank dvd in the drive, but when I pointed to what file I intended to burn, I kept getting the "insert blank dvd", and it wouldn't start, even though the screen in the background could see that the dvd was loaded and ready. No problem for cd's, they'll burn like an oil slick on the Gulf of Mexico.

So I have a script that is supposed to check to see if a mail server is up and responsive. What I want to know is how I can send it the telnet escape character. I've tried:VAR=`(sleep 5;echo quit) | (telnet mailserver.timbuktu.net 25 2>&- )`
This works BUT there is a problem as the mail server may have been accidentally firewalled off. If this happens, my automated checking script will hang. What I want to do is send the escape character so that the '>' prompt comes up. They I should be able to send it "quit" even if it is hung on not getting a response from the server. VAR=`(sleep 5;echo -e '^]';sleep 1;echo quit) | (telnet arhqmg01.usarec.army.mil 25 2>&- )`
The above doesn't work. telnet interprets CTRL+] as '^]' but you can't type '^]' and get the same effect. So I guess what I need is to send the actual keystrokes. Like echo "somenumber" ; echo quit

These metrics includes the time of computation, the time of communication and the amdhal law. I would like to know what tests can be done to show the performance of the application. So, I'm searching for a book or document that shows me what type of tests can be done to show the performance of an application.

I want to test LVM+Raid. When I was testing ZFS on Solaris, I was able to create regular files, and use those as disks for testing.I tried creating a regular file full of zeros w/ dd, then partitioning that. fdisk seemed to be able to create a partition on the regular file, but mkfs and parted couldn't work with it. Is there any way to create fake block devices for testing?

What is the difference between Sid (unstable) and Squeeze (testing)?
Is it better to download Squeeze(testing) rather than Lenny(stable) because the software is more up to date?
Or would I want to get Sid? How unstable is it?
This is for a desktop by the way.
