I am interested in doing some testing for Fedora. I want to be able to test nightly builds of fedora. I currently am running F12 and depend on it to do daily work and don't want to risk breaking it just for testing. I wanted to know how fellow fedoraforum members do testing of new fedora builds? Do they have several root partitions to install a working and testing install? Do they put in a virtual machine?

View 11 Replies View RelatedI am interested in setting up a webserver on a PC I have laying around...more for the experience and knowledge of learning it from scratch. I have used dedicated servers before with webhosting, but did not do the installations of apache and other items. The server we had purchased had CentOS installed.
My question is, can I use this desktop I have to simply install the CentOS DVD torrent off their website, and start from there, with installing apache, and all the other items associated with a server environment to test/play around, or is there a difference and something I am missing with my plan to do this?
The end result will be having my desktop setup as a "server" I can ssh into and screw around with just to learn more about it.Sorry for the basic question. (i posted this here instead of the "newbie" section, since i figured it would get moved here)
I set up a dhcp server in the lan and assigned static ips to two computers, computer A and B, according to their mac address. Everything was running fine. But when I turned off computer A, connected computer C to the network, and assigned computer A's static ip to computer C without changing dhcp setting. Computer C was able to access the internet. When I turned on computer A, dhcp couldn't assign an ip address to it, and computer C showed an error message of ip conflict and failed to use internet. I wonder if dhcp server is able to prevent other computer from using the same static ip that is already assigned to a computer according to its mac address.

My Debian Testing KDE is not functioning properly. When I Leave and click Restart Computer, the computer does not go to a reboot but goes to the KDE login screen. When I cold boot the computer and click Restart Computer from the KDE login window, the same thing happens, the login window reappears.
When I choose Turn Off Computer, the computer properly powers down.
It looks like I should re-install something but what that something is I don't know. I checked the boot and dmesg logs. Nothing leaps of the screen at me but I have to admit that I am not 100% sure what I am looking for.
I had tried a previous version of ubuntu on this same machine a couple years ago. Version 7.xx I think. That live cd would boot up into the GUI okay although it was still kind of slow. Fast forward to now, I am trying to boot my machine from an xubuntu cd version 10.04. The GUI does not come up and I am only presented with a terminal. When I try to start the GUI (startxfce4) I eventually see a message that the monitor/video does not support color depth 24. Believe it or not, I still have that older version of ubuntu so I tried it again and sure enough it still works.
So here is what I have noticed is different. On the older version of ubuntu it appears to be using the 'glint' video driver. The new version of xubuntu is using the 'vesa' driver. I tried changing this by creating an xorg.conf file and adding a driver line specifying 'glint'. After trying to start the GUI with that change I get an error saying that the glint module could not be loaded.
So finally to my question, is the glint video driver loaded by default in xubuntu? I see it's package listed under xubuntu. I even tried installing the package myself using apt-get and that seemed to work. It went through some steps and did not report any errors but I still get the same error afterwards.
What do I need to in order to use the glint video driver with xubuntu 10.04? Of course, the other issue is that the install does not recognize my wireless card either so there is no internet access on this machine. Oh yeah, the video card in the machine is a 3DLabs Permedia 2 (it looks like ubuntu recognizes it as a Texas Instruments but still permedia 2).
I would like some opinions on creating a two computer network so I can study a server in action. I would prefer that it was on a level below accessing the internet and then being routed back at this point. Installing a router is fine.
View 1 Replies View RelatedI am using Fedora 13 and I have one program (wine) that I need to start grabbing for the updates-testing repo instead of the default repositories in order to get newer versions. I think I can figure out how to add that repository, but I need to know if there are any others I need to disable or any other changes I need to make to my system so that I don't confuse my set up with conflicting updates.
Also, is there anything special I need to do to be sure that only that one program is grabbed from the testing repo when I run regular updates?
I have an interdependent collection of scripts in my ~/bin directory as well as a developed ~/.vim directory and some other libraries and such in other subdirectories. I've been versioning all of this using git, and have realized that it would be potentially very easy and useful to do development and testing of new and existing scripts, vim plugins, etc. using a cloned repo, and then pull the working code into my actual home directory with a merge.
The easiest way to do this would seem to be to just change & export $HOME, eg
cd ~/testing; git clone ~ home
export HOME=~/testing/home
cd ~
screen -S testing-home
# start vim, write/revise plugins, edit scripts, etc.
# test revisions
However since I've never tried this before I'm concerned that some programs, environment variables, etc., may end up using my actual home directory instead of the exported one. Is this a viable strategy? Are there just a few outliers that I should be careful about?

How can I identify which GRUB setting is used when booting my computer?

The setup worked fine on vista, but on ubuntu whenever i plug in headphones (headphone output) the laptops internal speakers shut off and there is no sound on the headphones, and when i plug in the sony receiver audio plug to my sound card output hole, the laptops speakers are still playing but no sound in the sony receiver. Also when i open the Ubuntu sound manager (I think its either pulseaudio or ASLA, stock gnome one) , it says on the Output tab, "Choose a device for sound output", but there is only one option and it says
"Internal audio analog stereo".
Im literally extremely lost at this point, i have read the forums for help, ASLA wiki (only shows USB sound device support) messed with the Sound Preferences, and spend around 9 hours in the last 2 days trying to make this work.
Our local community wants to provide broadband access for people who don't own a computer. I have been given the task of setting this up and I am going to use Ubuntu. Internet access will be via a usb dongle to a T-Mobile 3.5g network. Initially we are intending to limit access to just Internet browsing. Most users will probably be older people, rather than teenage hackers. configuring/securing a default Ubuntu install for this sort of use.

I now find the need to test/code for IE. To that end I'm thinking VMware, VitrualBox, etc. loaded up with that "other" OS.
I'm sure others have gone down this path. I'm guessing the answer is Win-7. My main question is: OK, I do a virgin buy and install and register it on my VM. Six months later I want to change from VM-X to VM-Y and I reinstall - what is MS's feelings on VM's.

I'm using fedora 11. I'd like to do some tests with direct IO (raw) devices. I have now raw(1) command. Yum fails to find a package providing raw. There's a /dev/rawctl and raw appears in /proc/devices. Where is it? (rpm?)

I am running Fedora 12 and I need to get linphone up and running with a working registrar. I have no idea what to do so I turned to hours of research which yielded little results but I did thing to try using partysip. Trying to use --skip-broken doesn't work.
I just found new mesa-dri drivers in the updates-testing repo, installed all of them, uninstalled kmod-nvidia, and it just worked with my geforce 9500GT. For me, this is a huge step forward, the only thing still giving problems is the DVI signal, so I'm stuck in VGA. Even then, I was able to get a better resolution with the DVI signal using this testing drivers than with the nvidia ones (I tried several links suggested by DBelton in the nvidia-installation thread for fixing the DVI issue, to no avail).
View 4 Replies View RelatedI recently purchased a Quadro FX 4800 and tried to install it on Fedora 10. During the installation, Fedora didn't recognize my new graphics card and began installing the OS in text mode. I stopped the installation and tried to start over, this time I passed the following command: linux resolution=1024x768. I then proceeded with the installation, and again, I was posed with a text mode installation. I continued with the text mode install and when Fedora was done installing, I rebooted and system just locked up.
At this point I was frustrated, so I reinstalled my old 8800 graphics card and started a new install with something that worked in the past. When the install was done, I loaded the latest NVIDIA drivers and the rebooted. I reinstalled my new graphics card (Quadro FX 4800) then powered up my system. I thought everything was good to go and all of a sudden my system flickered and then locked up during the 'Anacron' testing phase. I then rebooted with the "Ctrl+Alt+Del" hotkeys, but my system always locks up during the 'Anacron' testing sequence. I am aware that the Quadro FX 4800 is a few months old, but how can I get it to work in linux? It has gotten so bad, that I had to resort to using MS Vista.

I am a ubuntu user but I want to go to the next level to use debian because what I heard of it, but I get confused to what to install on my computer do I install debian testing or debain stable with testing repositories.
- I want to use this system to the home use only.
- I want to use the newest packages because the stable packages is too old to use.
- What about using more than one repository i.e stable with testing with unstable at the same time (the same sourcelist)
- Is the testing and unstable sid packages good enough for the home use?
I posted a bug to HFS+ DVD mounting at Bugzilla. This has resulted in with a solution by a contributor hosted at "Fedora Buildsystem". I want to test this but I do not understand how this site works. Will someone explain the basics of implementing a bug fix hosted/documented here?
