Ubuntu :: Making Custom Sound Themes In 9.10?
Feb 1, 2010
Here's the scenario: Changing themes in ubuntu used to be a pretty straight forward process that almost anyone could do with basic tools. basically you downloaded the sound you wanted and went to system/preferences/sound and changed the event you wanted to change to the new sound. Ubuntu 9.10 comes along and throws a major wrench in the works. Sure sound preferences is still there, but there's no way to select a specific sound event to change. in fact the only thing you can do is select a sound theme or choose an event sound. there is no way to change the selected theme. The only way i've come across to change a theme is manually. I'll use the starcraft theme available on [URL]. First off download the file and save it on your desktop. Next it needs to be extracted to a specific location. For systemwide use "/usr/share/sounds" as root and for local user only use "/home/username/.local/share/sounds" username being your home folder. I'm not going to go into specifics on how to extract files where there's plenty of info readily available on how to do that. Once you've extracted the sound theme you can go to system/preferences/sound and click on the dropdown menu and select starcraft and that will change the system sounds. now say for instance that you want to make your own custom sound theme. if you look in the starcraft folder you'll see a sound folder and an index.theme file. the sound folder contains all the sounds for the theme and the index.theme references those files. use gedit to open index.theme
you'll see:
[Sound Theme]
Name=StarCraft
Directories=stereo
[stereo]
OutputProfile=stereo
[Code].....
That's essentially where i'm at. my question is for the other events that i can't figure out. is there a way to list events that can be associated with sounds things like minimize maximize ect.

CC is now complete (didn't have access to the internet for 3 days so I couldn't upload it) but its working fine. Tested it out with an ISO and it works perfect. Rename to .deb and install it. Even though it says 11.04 - it works on any system with a problematic version of compiz. It is also harmless on a system without compiz although it does depend on it. cc-11.04.deb.zip

I made a custom kernel for maverick, 2.6.35-27. And I want to get the latest Intel 5300 wireless card drivers working. The wireless works now, but I want to get these installed anyway. I've been on a custom compilation kick for a while, and just been wanting to do everything compiled myself, just to learn a lot. Including putting linux on my WNDR3700 router using DD-WRT. Still doing a lot of customization on that as well.

My laptop, which is running Ubuntu 9.10, will periodically make a sound that sounds like someone is plugging something into a sound jack. I will try to get a recording of it, but that doesn't seem likely anytime soon. I tried disabling my internal mic, and that didn't fix it. It makes it even when my speakers are muted, which makes me think it's because some hardware is not correctly configured. I have an HP dv6236us laptop.
Here is my lspci output. Dunno if it will help, but it can't hurt: Code: 00:00.0 Host bridge: Intel Corporation Mobile 945GM/PM/GMS, 943/940GML and 945GT Express Memory Controller Hub (rev 03) 00:02.0 VGA compatible controller: Intel Corporation Mobile 945GM/GMS, 943/940GML Express Integrated Graphics Controller (rev 03)

I would like to install a new icon theme without effecting my currently selected panel theme, as i think the Ambience panel theme looks really nice and unified but im not too keen on the Ubuntu-Mono icons.Is this easily possible, without going into my icon folders and replacing all the instances of one style for another?Are there any applications for gnome icon theming like OS X's Candybar?Im sure others must desire to change only the icons and perhaps it is really easy and this is why i couldnt dig anythin up on google, that or im a useless googler.

Since of late "Appearance preference" behaves awkwardly . Normaly It is supposed to show themes in /usr/share/themes right? but now it shows themes only in ~/.themes folder. I don't know what affected the change. how do I configure it as to show themes in /usr/share/themes/,?
Also whatever theme I use , Controls would stay same(Classic controls). They wouldn't be update to those of the Theme used.

My speakers are making continuous slight buzz sounds. I don't know why this is happening but when i am making my sound to mute all, the sound goes off. When I hear properly, it seems to be the sound of the hard-drive spinning sound, I couldn't under from where it is coming, its happening from past 4-5 days.

I have a strange and inexplicable problem I've never had before - I can play audio as usual from the terminal on Fedora 14 with my custom 2.6.38 kernel. But, when I log into GNOME, any attempt to use an application that uses audio gives me a "permission denied". The "Sound preferences" shows a dummy output device and no entry in the "hardware" section. Using the distro kernel and a 2.6.33.7-rt kernel from planet ccrma works fine.
Is there anything I'm supposed to build into the kernel that Fedora 14 requires that wasn't a requirement for earlier versions?

I have a Toshiba laptop and Toshiba netbook (both Intel chipsets). Laptop - Squeeze install gave me the 2.6.32 kernel and sound only worked thru headphones but not the speakers. Later on, I compiled kernel 2.6.36.1 (and just imported .config from original kernel) and sound WORKED perfectly. I had a few other errors ("address space collision" / PM error) so recently I compiled kernel 2.6.38, which solved other hardware issues but sound is back to original problem (works thru headphones but not thru speakers). I even installed the "backports" kernel (2.6.38.4) and it didn't make a difference.
Netbook - Did exact same things as above but no matter what, the sound never worked on it... same issue (sound in headphones.. no sound in speakers) So, how do I "reverse-engineer" the laptop working sound install with kernel 3.6.36.1 and make it work with later kernel (nothing... and I've tried about 30+ thread suggestions makes the sound cards work properly.. other than kernel 2.6.36.1)

Just spent three whole days barking up the wrong tree, solving Fedora 11 and Fedora 12 boot failures because the correct hypothesis was illogical: installation did not update/modify the initrd.
The first couple of times I installed Fedora 11 on the HighPoint Technologies RocketRaid 2640x4, the installation inserted my "custom" driver module (rr26xx) into the initrd, permanently, so that the system booted off the controller card for which the custom driver was inserted. (I yelled about this success in this thread: [url]
My most recent installs of BOTH F11 and F12 on the RocketRaid failed to properly set up the boot. It turns out that the "rr2640" module I "slipstreamed" into the installation process was *NOT* permanently added to the initrd by anaconda. (F12 gave me "no root device found boot has failed, sleeping forever", on boot; F11 hung also, without such error, I presume, during the init script execution). Because of limited resources and time, I only know for sure the module was missing from the F11 initrd, and am ASSUMING the same was the case with F12.
The only difference between the successful installs and the ones with failed boot is that the successful installs were made on a single-drive (JBOD) mode on the controller; whereas, the failed ones were placed on RAID 5. But, AFAIK, the created logical device for the card is "/dev/sda", in both cases, and the kernel can not distinguish between the two cases (or can it?). Thus, the inconsistency cost me a lot of time, and is still inexplicable to me.
Question: What is the best way to deal with custom drivers, today? There are custom spins, and many tools, like isomaster. Stupid question: Is there a way to modify the initrd inside an installer ISO -- be it for CD/DVD/USBboot drive -- beefing the init RAM disk with whatever modules you'd like, for the boot process (using, say, isomaster)?
And what makes anaconda understand that a module must be added to the initrd ? How can one force anaconda to do so?
How does moving to dracut as the initrd tool affect any/all of the above?

I was just using the mic and watched it stop working suddenly. I was in the middle of a skype test call when the graphical mixer level died down to zero in the middle of the call. When the test call was played back, the first part sounded fine then the sound got lower until it became inaudible. Since then I can't get any sound from my mic in skype.
Also, the audio input level graphically shown in Sound Preferences shows no fluctuations in sound as it used to before. The input device is enabled. I tried using Sound Recorder to record some sound clips and that worked fine. So the mic is working but Sound Preferences and Skype seem to have the mic level really low. I'm not sure what else to think considering it was working perfectly a few minutes ago. I've tried restarting, but that didn't fix it either.

There is a theme there already called "Beryl Red" (I assume it's a default), but there is no button to install or use it.
