Occasionally my machine displays the following warning whenever left to itself for an hour or so. "www.windowsvistatestdrive.com:443 uses an invalid security certificate. The certificate expired on 09/16/2009 10:52 AM. (Error code: sec_error_expired_certificate)"
I am not trying to access this site. It is not always the same url. My machine, described below, is networked to an XP machine which recently had to be recovered after a viral attack. Since I am not usually interested I decline to use the certificate and the warning goes away.

I have a heavily used file server that I want to restart, then if it requires e2fsck's on any volume to run them after it restarts. The only problem is that the server is rarely rebooted, and they said it might kernel panic because its been so long. I've heard there's a way to have it go past the kernel panic if it does happen, but I'm not sure how to do that or the other stuff.If it was a Windows server, I would schedule a shutdown with the force switch, and have the chkdsk's already scheduled for each volume on reboot. But for RHEL, I really don't know.I'm hoping this can be done, so that way I can have it kick off at say 7am, then when I get in at 8am it will probably be near the end of the e2fsck's so I can see what's going on.

I have been forbidden to enable automatic updates on our Ubuntu servers, for both security and regular packages.When I log into any of my four Ubuntu servers, the welcome message contains this:
39 packages can be updated.
26 updates are security updates.
However, when I run the Nagios plugin that monitors APT, I get:
% /usr/lib/nagios/plugins/check_apt
APT WARNING: 33 packages available for upgrade (0 critical updates).
I need to know how to properly detect that there are pending security updates, and regular updates. Once I can do that, I plan to write a Nagios script that will return WARNING for pending regular updates, and CRITICAL for pending security updates.

I didn't realize my system drive had filled up... and TaskWarrior overwrote my 'pending.data' with a 0-byte copy. d-: I had worked SO hard to get all my tasks imported from various other notes (many of which I deleted along the way), and hadn't yet prepared for the possibility of data loss. Should've set it up to use my Dropbox...why doesn't TaskWarrior make ANY backup buy default? That data is so important, and yet so small and trivial to backup. Anyway, my 'undo.data' is totally intact and seems to contain all the information theoretically needed to reconstruct 'pending.data'. Unfortunately right now I have no sample 'pending.data' to look at. d-: OR: does anybody know of a simple Linux utility I can use to recover previous file versions? It's possible no data was overwritten, since the replacement is empty.

I want to host 5 websites on my new virtual server so I have created 2 nameservers that point to my virtual server's IP addresses as a glue record. What confuses me is when I create a new domain on my server it gives the new domain it's own nameservers (ns1.thenewdomain.co.uk etc) do I need to change these records so they use the nameservers I created earlier? If I do? Which particular records should I change? I'm running a Unix virtual server with a Plesk control panel.

I have mounted an NFS share with ISO images on my kvm Server. If i connect such a iso to a VM (using virt-manager) for installing a operating system i get the following error on startup: Error starting domain: internal error Process exited while reading console log output: char device redirected to /dev/pts/1 qemu: could not open disk image /mnt/iso/public/Linux/Distributions/Debian/debian-504-amd64-netinst.iso: Permission denied
The problem is definitly that kvm (or qemu or libvirt-bin, i don't know) tries to set permissions (rwx owner for libvirt-qemu, --- for kvm group, --- for other) on the file, although it has read permissions. Is it possible to change this behavior?

I have an Internet connection with a Webstar cablemodem by Scientific-Atlanta Inc. DCP2100 series.I'm running an unstable distribution of Debian with the 2.6.32-5-amd64 kernel.I have installed JDownloader and works great, but I couldn't configure the reconnection features.What I need is a simple executable to run a script to change my IP adress, if possible. An specific tutorial could just be great for me to learn.And if you can't do this in linux as well as in XP, I'd really appreciate to inform me about it.

I just realized that since I reinstalled slackware on my laptop, the machine is not obtaining an IP from my router during the startup proccess like it used to do before.
Now I see something like:
Code:
dhcpcd: eth0: waiting for carrier
dhcpcd: eth0: timed out
dhcpcd: eth0: waiting 8 sec
and it fails. After I login in KDE, I need to manually renew (or acquire) an IP. Issuing the command

Over the last few weeks I have rapidly been coming up to speed with all things Kerberos and I'm pretty much sorted apart from one thing. On our Solaris machines I can use the 'ktkt_warnd' daemon to automatically renew user's tickets up to the maximum renewal time of the ticket.
However, I'm not sure how I do this on our Linux machines (Red Hat Enterprise 4). Does anyone know of a daemon for Linux that provides the same sort of functionality?

I have one of my Red Hat 5.4 box connected to the RHN and I managed to download and install selected files and updates. Lately, it has stopped doing so. I can go to the RHN webpage and select/apply the uppates I chose. But when I run the command "rhn_check", all I get is this
Loaded plugins: rhnplugin
[root@ELSDB09 ~]# rhn_check
Loaded plugins: rhnplugin
The updates are not installed and RHN shows that update as "Pending". I am not sure which log file I can dig into.

I just upgraded my Ubuntu Server from 10.04 to 11.04. I am having issues with the ethernet connection upon boot. The connection will blink slowly and not stay connected to the network. If I then unplug the ethernet from the switch and then replug it in, eth0 will get a steady connection, at which point I have to run the following command to get everything working.
Code:
sudo dhclient eth0
After running the command I have no issues with the ethernet connection.
lshw -C network
Code:
*-network:0

I am wondering, what are the merits of staying with an LTS release versus the renewal of the system by upgrading to a new release? Certainly, staying with an LTS release isn't going to be more or less dangerous than upgrading to a new release that specifically addresses security issues. With Lucid Lynx coming up this spring, should I try sticking it out until the LTS after Lynx, or keep upgrading regularly?

Ubuntu Jaunty Server connected via eth0 to a Billion residential ADSL router. I've locked the server MAC address to a specific IP in the router and set the DHCP renewal times to the longest possible times. For a certain number of days, the server will remain connected to the router, but then for some reason (the last time it was after about a month), the server loses it's connect and dumps into syslog the following:
Code:
Jun 2 17:10:15 defiant dhclient: DHCPREQUEST of 192.168.1.105 on eth0 to 192.168.1.254 port 67
Jun 2 17:11:26 defiant dhclient: last message repeated 5 times

I am writing a server which uses edge-triggered epoll. When the server calls accept(), it just extracts the first connection in the pending queue. If there are more connections that are waiting, can we make the server accept all the pending connections? I wrote a loop like the following:
do {
client_fd = accept(...);
/* Work with the client fd */
} while (client_fd != -1); [/code]
Doesn't seem to work. A related question, more a clarification, is as follows. My understanding was that a connect() at the client returns only when accept() in the server returns. Clearly, I was incorrect. Even with no accept() call in the server, my client was able to connect and send data. Am I getting this right?

As I have developed a part of my project based on crontab and now one of my team member has raised a question based on performance and load/stress, I would like to know the following limits of crontab.I assume each line in crontab file is a task; and also crontab would hold completed and pending tasks.1. How many tasks (both completed and pending) could crontab hold/handle?2. Will crontab run as expected if there are 100s of completed and less than 100 pending task?

I'm running an up-to-date Fedora 12 machine with the Gnome desktop (meaning with Network Manager). My network connection is a wired ethernet to a switch which then connects to a Netgear router. For some reason, this machine can't renew its leases with DHCP, so NetworkManager deactivates eth0, taking my machine off the network. I have to click Network Manager and enable eth0, which seems to work every time.
How can I fix it? Here are the relevant bits from /var/log/messages showing a failed DHCP request and then the successful renewal.
Code:
Aug 1 04:00:08 ironton dhclient[12452]: DHCPREQUEST on eth0 to 192.168.1.1 port 67
Aug 1 04:00:08 ironton dhclient[12452]: DHCPNAK from 192.168.1.1
Aug 1 04:00:08 ironton NetworkManager[1261]: <info> (eth0): DHCPv4 state changed reboot -> expire
Aug 1 04:00:08 ironton NetworkManager[1261]: <info> (eth0): device state change: 8 -> 9 (reason 6)
Aug 1 04:00:08 ironton NetworkManager[1261]: <info> Marking connection 'System eth0' invalid because IP configuration expired.

Sometimes I want to keep something in PDF files, so I print to the PDF "printer". However, if I inadvertetnly forget to check the PDF creation and rather take the real printer (which is usually only powered up, when I really want to print something), printing goes to the real printers queue and nothing happens ... until, possibly some sessions later, I want to print something (on paper rather than PDF) and power up the printer.
Then all inadvertent garbage comes first and chances are big, that the printer gets junk during power up or reconnecting the cable to the computer and then the whole thing is wasting even more paper, since escape-sequences sent to the printer get chopped and misunderstood by the printer.
In order to stop this alltogether, I am looking for a mehtod, to automatically flush the whole printing queue every time when I log out of my ubuntu session.
I know, there is a command lpq to tell which print jobs are pending, I also know the command cancel -Umyname -a, but this requests for my password. I want to kill all those incomplete or pending print jobs automatically.
And how do I hook such a command script into the logoff or shutdown sequence?
