I want to wipe my drive and do a clean install of 10.04, but I don't want to bust out the 50ft network cable to get back online. I currently have the proper wireless drivers installed. Is there a way to save them off to a USB drive, so I can reinstall them after a clean install of Ubuntu? The driver I need/use is the Broadcom STA wireless driver.

Is it possible to reinstall the games package or reinstall the update?I'm thinking more of the lines of a system restore or something so back 2 days from today.
I am running a recently installed minimal install. I am having some fun building the system up but trying to keep things slim. I have installed the ATI catalyst drivers working from the tutorial here under 'Installing the Restricted Drivers Manually': [URL]... After successfully getting the ATI driver running, I realise I really don't need or want it and am wanting to uninstall it completely and return the config to the way it was. Some of that I can do with the aid of some of the links I have found but installing the ATI drivers no doubt killed some of the packages that were there in the first place (graphics was fine in the first place incidentally). Question: What might these squashed packages be so I can reinstall them and have graphics setup as it was before I installed the ATI drivers and how can I remove all trace of the ATI drivers?

Have been trying to fix the problem from things I read on here, made a thread but can't get online to execute it.Found my install dvd tried running repair and in the process deleted my windows partition(anyway to get that back?) and still no previous ati drivers or gnome installed.
When I boot up i see SUSE LINUX not opensuse... no grub So my question is how do I install ati drivers from the dvd and how do I install gnome or kde from install dvd? did i royally mess up and basically now just completely reinstall opensuse 11.2 completely? and if so can I recover files from my deleted windows partition and previous opensuse partition?
Do you have to reinstall Nvidea and Broadcom drivers every time the kernel is updated? The new kernel would not even load to where I could get to my desktop. Help?? I could not even sign in with older kernels. Had to use a Puppy CD to edit my Grub menu.lst so I could sign in on the older kernel.
View 9 Replies View RelatedOver the last two months I've been trying out Ubuntu 10.04 32bit using Wubi under my current Windows 7 32bit OS, and I'm at the point where I want to reformat and partition my HDD making Ubuntu my main OS (with a very small partition for Windows 7 on the side for certain things).I was just wondering if it is somehow possible to export all my current settings and preferences for my current installation of Ubuntu so that once I've reinstalled it, I can import them and everything will be the same as it is now (I hope that made sense...).I'm not too fussed about reinstalling apps and things, just all my current settings and preferences.Oh and also, (this might not be the place to ask, but I know you'll probably be able to answer this as well) is there anything I can use to do the same export/import process with my Windows 7

I replaced "quiet splash" with "acpi=off" and everything works perfectlyI have installed Ubuntu 10.04 on a hard-drive partition, but I have yet to have it boot successfully. I was a casual mac user before thius and am used to packages--so I have no exp. installing tarballs. I am trying to install xampp and successfully downloaded it, but now am at a loss as to what to do--nothing seems to be working. I am using firefox which for some reason is not saving to downloads even though that is what I have set in pref. Is there a way I can use apt-get for this (although my understanding of that isn't much better. I can't seem to find the relevant information in documentation.

The problem is that I turned the laptop off without saving a document in Openoffice.Now every time I open OpenOffice it comes the OpenOffice Document Recovery and asks me to Press "Start Recovery". The dialog window is too large and I can't move it beyond the top of the screen to find the "Start Recovery" button. It goes until the top of the screen and that 's it!Also I can't resize it to a small one.I have tried to "move" it but it doesn't work.I have autohidden the upper and down bars but nothing!The window is too big to find the "Press button".
How can i make the window going upper the screen?
Basically my laptop did have a Windows 7 partition that came with the system(which I no longer need), a Ubuntu partition and a separate partition for storage. This was until I formatted the separate partition using Windows and it did something which gave me a file system error and would not let me boot into any os. Then because I was in a rush and had lectures in a hour I installed another Ubuntu partition of 3gb just to reinstall GRUB so I could boot into my original Ubuntu to get my files. Now I would like to delete the 3gb Ubuntu partition and the Windows partition to be left with my original Ubuntu partition and then merge the hard drive into just the one partition. My main fear before I attempt this is again destroying my GRUB. I know I have made a mess of this but would really appreciate being pointed into the right direction. I have done some searching and reading but struggled to find clearish instructions on how to do it properly.

So, I had to reinstall Windows XP since my previous installation gave me a blue screen error due to reasons unfathomable. Naturally, this deleted the GNU Grub and I could not login to my Fedora.
I read that apparently booting from a DVD installation offers an option to enter the rescue mode. I did not have a DVD, I only had the LiveCD so I had to figure out a way to reinstall Grub from the LiveCD. The following method seemed to do the trick.
Run the LiveCD and open Terminal.
1. Find the partition where the Grub Stage1 is code...
i have ubuntu 10.04 64 bit installed and configured and working sweet. I have reinstalled windows 7 and now i can't boot ubuntu i've tried easybcd to add ubuntu to win boot loader which failed and tried to follow the instructions to reinstall grub through a live cd which i am in at the moment. i go to a terminal and type sudo grub and it brings up the grub prompt. i have mounted all discs and entered the command find /boot/grub/stage1 and it keeps spitting this back at me Error 15: File not found
my hd is a 80gb with partions like this
/dev/sda1 105mb ntfs system reserved
/dev/sda2 45gb ntfs win 7 home premium 64 bit
/dev/sda3 34gb ext4 ubuntu 10.04 64 bit
/dev/sda4 1.5gb linux swap
My buddy passed me a CD of W7 I installed & everything was o.k. But then I activate it and reboot it.! It gave me some stinkin error BOOT MSG some like that.! and that I had to press ctrl,alt & delete. Now I cant access or enter it. I wonder if I can install or reinstall from ubuntu 9.10. Cause I cant do it from the bios cause it asks me a password. Which I never had before. Any suggestions linux pros. One more thing I tried recovering it form the win7 repair disc but nothing.

I have already tried once to reinstall grub, but i rebooted without unmounting the hd, though i don't think thats the problem, but since that first attempt, i have been unable to boot into live CD mode.
I had recently upgraded my 9.0.4 ubuntu to the latest version, but something must have gone horribly wrong during the upgrade. On boot, it says it has problems and errors loading stuff and when it gets to the desktop, it gets no input from the keyboard or the mouse. Same goes for recovery mode. When trying to run from a live CD the keyboard and mouse work just fine. I have the CD and I wanted to simply reinstall but problem is I don't know how to reinstall over the current installation.

However, after a day or two of inactivity (apart from remotely logging in for SSH), the computer goes into a state where the screen is blank and it is unresponsive (and no longer allows access by SSH, FTP, or SVN server access). I have to reboot the computer to use it again, which I can't always do when I'm traveling. I inquired about this previously -but I'm convinced the solution may be more complicated than suggested because I don't have compiz turned on and the computer's power management is already set so that it's never supposed to sleep. I tried to install 10.04 fresh from a Live CD, but it freezes where it asks me how I want to use my partitions so I can't even reinstall

The drive appears under "Places" in the side pane of Nautilus, but not sudo Nautilus. If I could see it under sudo Nautilus I think I could just right click and change permissions.
View 1 Replies View RelatedI would like to reformat my hard drive and reinstall 10.10 desktop from a stick. However when I try and boot from the stick it comes up with the SysLinux 4.0... one liner and hangs. I have tried:
- different usb sticks
- running as ISO
- mounting ISO using Startup disk creator
- finding the known Bug re something similar and deleting the first two letters in the last line of a certain file wihtin the syslinux folder
I am currently running 10.10 - is this why it ignores it? I'm not understanding something,

1. hardware drivers for the wireless modem are updated, but not functioning. the driver screen says it's activated, though.

I have recently found out (also in this forum), that my motherboard is simply put: "junk" (as it fails to see the 8Gigs of ram i have). So i will buy another mobo and would like to hear from you if I should reinstall my ubuntu from scratch or try to just run the same OS as i have now (I know, in the MS world this would mean utter chaos and mobo/processor/ram/everything damage - smoke from the machine etc. So: How safe is it to "hot swap" hardware under Ubuntu?

After not booting into my Ubuntu partition for a while, I noticed that grub had disappeared, being replaced by the windows bootloader. I followed the steps here under "reinstalling from liveCD" and I was able to get a grub command line when I rebooted, but no boot menu. So I booted into Ubuntu and ran update-grub like the instructions say, and the output indicated that Ubuntu and Windows had both been successfully found and added to grub.cfg. But when I rebooted, I still only got the grub command line.
When the instructions had steps for if you had a separate boot partition, I used /dev/sda1 because it is marked by fdisk as being the boot partition. I thought that maybe update-grub was only seeing /boot on the Ubuntu partition and wasn't touching the boot partition, so I tried mounting /dev/sda1 as /boot, but after that grub didn't boot at all, it just goes straight to Windows and I haven't been able to reinstall grub even after following the steps again several times. How can I get grub back?
I can't reinstall Unbuntu 11.04 on my laptop. I've a laptop with Ubuntu 11.04, but I wanna reisntall it from a pendrive. I did everything well, I mean I used Universal USB Installer and I set everything in BIOS. When I boot from the pendrive it don't do anything, just the Unbutu 11.04 starts.

This gave ma a grub shell on boot. The prbm was that this was grub1 - v0.97
I ran a proper 2nd time

$grub2-install --root-dir=/tmp/b /dev/sda
Now on boot I can spot grub loading and black screen with blinking cursos on top. ubuntu 10.10, separate /boot, uncrypted /root (which is probably the cause) Also I have deleted the 2 win partitions (sda1, sda2) and made a new one (sda1). The /boot is still sda3, can this be the cause?
i use Fluxbox (Mint in Karmic, but after few tweaks and updates i have to reinstall system-but i couldn't even make with gparted and usb-creator startup disk, so i used virtual machine in Mac OS to make some older version (Mint 7 XFCE).BUT, then i discovered that i can not even load the system from USB-although it was all set in bios to startup with USB Stick. How can i persuade my dell mini 10v to start up from live USB Stick.
