Fedora Installation :: F-10 NOT Saving Sessions?

I can't seem to get F-10 to save my desktop session..I panel several workspace screens with apps, tools..Then, I pull down: System -> Preferences -> Personal -> Sessions and tab into: Options, and select:: "Automatically remember running Applications when logging out.For the Startup Programs, everything in that list is checked on.I logoff via System -> Shutdown, and come back sometime later, all the Workspaces are totally EMPTY

I am starting to get more used to Fedora 15 and GNOME 3, but I still have one outstanding issue remaining. Before explaining the problem, I am using GNOME 3 in Fallback mode because I prefer the look and feel of the gnome-panel over the gnome-shell. Plus, I have performance issues using x11vnc in regular GNOME 3 mode that I do not see in Fallback mode. I cannot use Separate X Sessions (TwinView "0") and get the gnome-panel to launch without crashing. The gnome-panel works fine when I set the screen back to TwinView "1".
Here are the error messages when running from a terminal window:

I want to wipe my drive and do a clean install of 10.04, but I don't want to bust out the 50ft network cable to get back online. I currently have the proper wireless drivers installed. Is there a way to save them off to a USB drive, so I can reinstall them after a clean install of Ubuntu? The driver I need/use is the Broadcom STA wireless driver.

My aspire 4745 laptop has a in-built webcam, so i installed Cheese to use it. Cheese starts and the webcam works at first instance. But it doesnot shows any thumbnails for taken pictures nor it saves any picture (I have checked everywhere for the images, inside and beyond my home folder). I am lost - if the wen cam can take a picture, why cannot save it?

Over the last two months I've been trying out Ubuntu 10.04 32bit using Wubi under my current Windows 7 32bit OS, and I'm at the point where I want to reformat and partition my HDD making Ubuntu my main OS (with a very small partition for Windows 7 on the side for certain things).I was just wondering if it is somehow possible to export all my current settings and preferences for my current installation of Ubuntu so that once I've reinstalled it, I can import them and everything will be the same as it is now (I hope that made sense...).I'm not too fussed about reinstalling apps and things, just all my current settings and preferences.Oh and also, (this might not be the place to ask, but I know you'll probably be able to answer this as well) is there anything I can use to do the same export/import process with my Windows 7

EDIT: Problem solved. I replaced "quiet splash" with "acpi=off" and everything works perfectlyI have installed Ubuntu 10.04 on a hard-drive partition, but I have yet to have it boot successfully. The boot starts normally, but then the screen goes blank.I am currently trying this solution:Quote: * At install screen press F6 and select nomodeset and install Ubuntu as usual.* On first boot after install, press e on getting the GRUB bootloader.* Using arrow keys navigate to and delete quiet and splash and type the word nomodeset in their place* Press Ctrl and X to boot* You should now be able to login to your Ubuntu as usualHowever, it seems that I am unable to get the changes I make in grub (changing "quiet splash" to "nomodeset" in the screen brought up by pressing 'e' when booting) to save (update) correctly. I am new to linux in general and have an older sysytem that I successfully partitioned to run ubuntu, kubuntu, and windoze. I was a casual mac user before thius and am used to packages--so I have no exp. installing tarballs. I am trying to install xampp and successfully downloaded it, but now am at a loss as to what to do--nothing seems to be working. I am using firefox which for some reason is not saving to downloads even though that is what I have set in pref. Is there a way I can use apt-get for this (although my understanding of that isn't much better. I can't seem to find the relevant information in documentation.

I am running F11 and would like to use ccsm to modify compiz settings. However; when I modify any settings in ccsm they do not seem to take effect at all. I have tried rebooting etc. I have checked the file /home/*username*/.config/compiz/compizconfig and all that's in there is:

So I've set up a Samba server through the gui. When I've labeled my shares as accessible to everyone, I can get to it no problem. However, when I tie it down to a specific samba user, I can't.
By all indications, it appears that it isn't saving the password because every time I go to edit users, it has the exact same string in the password field.

if i configured the /etc/yum.conf file to:
keepcache=1
this seems to keep downloaded packages. in the dir specified at:
cachedir=/var/cache/yum
the next time i wish to use these packages and install them, how would i use yum to do this or do i just use rpm instead ? Would it be necessary to connect to the internet to do this? What about those package dependencies will i have to install them all one at a time?

I've been scanning in large numbers of old photos for a friend, and up until now, xsane has worked like a charm. Today, however, it's spitting at me. If I try to select a file path in advance, and just save the images, it fails, suggesting that a link exists. (No, I'm putting them directly into the directory in question; no links involved.) I have to bring up the image in the viewer, select Save and select the path for each and every photo involved. Not only that, if I try using the file selection box to show xsane where I want things stored, it doesn't put the path into the box; I have to type it in myself. Considering that I have the best part of a hundred photos to scan, this isn't exactly an option. Does anybody have an idea what's gotten mungged, or how to unmung it?

The Fukushima HP has been officially retired. In it's place there now labours a Toshiba R830-8300. And therein lies a host of problems. The Fuku-HP ran an AMD Turion 64 dual core. The R830 runs an i5-2520M The Fuku-HP ran an Nvidia GeForce 7350m. The R830 runs runs an [8086:126] ??? Dunno what is. But that's what Hardware Lister gives me on the VGA controller) I don't want (for several reasons outlined below) to have to re-install F15.Regardless of all arguments to the contrary, Gnome 3 is a time-consuming PITA to get tweaked into any resemblance of useability Neither the F14 nor the F15 liveCDs will boot to GUI on this laptop to allow a new installation. Not exactly sure what's up with that. I've got a ton of tweaks and data on/in the existing install that I do not wish to lose.
I know for a fact that both Linux and Compiz (acceleration) work peachy keen fine on this box. The second partition has been given over to MINT-11, and works swimmingly!
I have also been able to get to GUI in the F15 install this morning, by the expedience of the following:editing the GRUB kernel line to remove references to nouveau, Nvidia and any mode setting, and booting into Runlevel 3 as root. drilling into X11, and killing xorg.conf, and xorg.conf.d. logging out, back in as myself, and then running startx.
The rub lies in the fact that Gnome-shell fails to load, and drops me back to fallback mode.
So, my goal is to tweak the existing install to run normally on this Toshiba i5. And I'm afraid that's gonna take bigger brains than I have readily available on a Sunday morning after not-enough sleep. (Or any other day of the week with enough sleep.)
I am therefore, at the mercy of the more learned than I.

I have installed Ubuntu 10.4 at my laptop (lenovo G530) which includes OpenOffice 3.2 (Oracle). The problem is that I turned the laptop off without saving a document in Openoffice.Now every time I open OpenOffice it comes the OpenOffice Document Recovery and asks me to Press "Start Recovery". The dialog window is too large and I can't move it beyond the top of the screen to find the "Start Recovery" button. It goes until the top of the screen and that 's it!Also I can't resize it to a small one.I have tried to "move" it but it doesn't work.I have autohidden the upper and down bars but nothing!The window is too big to find the "Press button".
How can i make the window going upper the screen?

Basically my laptop did have a Windows 7 partition that came with the system(which I no longer need), a Ubuntu partition and a separate partition for storage. This was until I formatted the separate partition using Windows and it did something which gave me a file system error and would not let me boot into any os. Then because I was in a rush and had lectures in a hour I installed another Ubuntu partition of 3gb just to reinstall GRUB so I could boot into my original Ubuntu to get my files. Now I would like to delete the 3gb Ubuntu partition and the Windows partition to be left with my original Ubuntu partition and then merge the hard drive into just the one partition. My main fear before I attempt this is again destroying my GRUB. I know I have made a mess of this but would really appreciate being pointed into the right direction. I have done some searching and reading but struggled to find clearish instructions on how to do it properly.

When my computer shuts down, I always get a long error message from the kernel. It's the very last thing the computer does and I can't even use the keyboard, since the system is halted. I wanted to read it more carefully (it's very long and doesn't fit the screen) and file a bug report against the kernel with it. But for that, I needed to save all that text in a file.

My Open Office freezes when I try to save over a network to Win 7 Home Premium. I'm running fedora 14 with win 7 mount via mount.cifs. I have full rw access to windows via dolphin. I am using Fedora 12 and i have enable XDMCP i have boot client with dhcp all is going well but when remote user logout than remote client display XDMCP: fatal error: Session declined Maximum number of open sessions. and after that i have reboot Fedora 12 server than it will work but after logout it will again create same problem.

I open an ODS file and edit it and save, fine. But sometimes and for no readily apparent reason it refuses to save the document with the error message:"Error saving the document <filename>: Write error. The file could not be written". I have upgraded my version of OpenOffice but the issue remains. Once it starts with that error the only way to save the file is to actually abandon my change and restart OOffice. Today I lost an hours stuff as the auto save was also failing but not giving me any warning it was failing. I'm not sure if this is an OpenOffice, file system, Fedora or permissions issue though I've not noticed anything similar with other applications. Have set permissions to 777 but still get the error.

GDM has no session options listed when I click on my username. I should have openbox and lxde. I read that GDM finds it's sessions from /usr/share/xsessions so I checked there and I have desktop files for both. currently I'm using WDM and it's working fine.

I have Lucid Lynx 10.04 installed on my eee 900ha and I'm unable to log in to my desktop.
Earlier today I logged in successfully and I uninstalled a couple of unused programs (pitivi, evolution, fspot, and another that I can't remember). I then shut down the computer. Later when I booted the computer back up, I was greeted with the usual ubuntu login screen but I noticed that there were no options in the sessions drop-up menu. I entered my login information and pressed enter, and the screen went black, then went back to the login screen again.
I'm using gnome.

i have a problem in my /etc/X11/gdm i found the folders for the settings on gdm. the Init/ folder is there and inside it was the PreSession/ and PostSession/ folder which is correct based on this:

I have two Debian boxes, A and B. I would like that a window (for example vlc, or whatever) displays on both A and B. The process (i.e., the X11 client) runs on A. If I interact with the window from box A, it should affect the window on box B. And, if I interact with the window from box B, it should affect the window on box A.

I have some heavy, long processes running on remote Linux machines. I use my laptop to SSH to these machine and run the processes from my couch.
BUT, when I want to shutdown my laptop, I am in trouble since the remote processes are killed.
I did my research and found out that "screen" is a great solution for me, it is! (As long as I don't SHUTDOWN my laptop). Isn't there a way to "persist" the "screen" sessions so I can shut it down and then re-attach to a session?
