I had Ubuntu 9.10 and windows vista on my laptop and both systems boot normally throw grub but after I upgrade to Ubuntu 10.04 LTS windows is shown on the grub loader but if I selected it all I get is blinking cursor, Ubuntu boots just fine.

I really like it now but at first I just dual-booted it, and now I want Vista gone. I know it's unnecessary to have just one OS but my hard-drive isn't particularly big and I'd prefer to have Ubuntu by itself. Can anyone tell me how to eliminate vista and leave Ubuntu as my sole operating system (I've all my files from computer on another computer so I don't have to worry about losing anything).

Having a major issue with my laptop. I am unable to boot into my Vista installation.I am currently posting this through my Fedora 11 installation which I had already. If anyone is interested, the BSOD error is:
0x0000007B (0x80399BB0, 0xC0000034, 0x00000000, 0x00000000)
As far as I know, a '7B' BSOD is usually a hard disk error but I am 100% sure the HDD is fine as I can read and write from both Fedora and Knoppix without issue. Steps taken so far: Obviously, I have tried the usual steps of trying to start windows in safe mode, last good config, and all of the F8 options. When they failed, I used fedora to check for some solutions online (Mostly useless answers from MS) and I found one successful case when a person flashed his BIOS back to an earlier time. Unfortunately, I cant get the BIOS update I got from the Dell website to boot from a USB drive (Says invalid boot disc - the BIOS on it is in the .exe format which I can't use in linux) and I do not have a floppy drive on the laptop.
So, I put in my Dell drivers and utilities CD hoping that it would give me some option to update (Or roll back) the BIOS but there was no such option. However, it did give me a load of diagnostic options including repair options by symptom so went with the "Unable to boot from BIOS". Unfortunately, that didnt help me at all. So, I got my Vista installation disc (OEM supplied) and managed to get to the repair menu (Which I had among my F8 options anyway) but this also has the option to reinstall. Unfortunately, it states that "Upgrade is unavailable" and that a clean install is the only thing I can select (At the expense of my files and settings).
As for the repair options, the automatic recovery doesn't seem to find any errors, asks to reset and see if all is well (It isn't). For some reason, system restore doesn't detect any restore points. There are no windows memory errors detected and I have no backups. So, i'm left with a command prompt that, by default, is asking for a file in this folder: X:/WINDOWS/System32/ I have no idea where it is getting the X: drive from - I have C and D drives for windows only. After the upgrade to Ubuntu 10.4 I'm not able to boot on my Windows Vista any more. It is most likely due to my fault during installation, since I ask to overwrite with GRUB also Windows partition's MBR (but if I remember well I think it was not the best solution to put as default overwriting all the MBRs).Anyway I was not able to fix it until now.Here is the RESULT.txt from the boot script:

I installed Ubuntu 9.10 on Windows 7 system using Ubuntu disk partion option. Unbuntu works great but I can no longer access W7. Windows Loader Boot Option is in normal position as last selection of Grub menu but arrow keys do work. Acts as if keyboard is locked. System defaults to Ubuntu 9.10. View 9 Replies View RelatedLast week I installed Ubuntu 10.04.1 on his Windows Vista machine, it has a 200GB hard-drive and he wanted 100GB for Vista & 100GB for Ubuntu on there. So instead of selecting the default partition I split it to 100GB each.
Now, however, I can't boot back into Windows and when it loads I am taken to the 'Recovery Tools' options. Have I 'cked up his partition? I can still view all the files/folders on his Windows partition from within Ubuntu however, so maybe there is a chance I can shrink down the Ubuntu partition again and restore his Windows partition?

I've heard people have been finding that when they upgrade from 9.10 to 10.04 on a machine that dual boots 9.10 and windows 7, they can't boot windows 7 afterwards. There is a fix to this problem but I would rather prevention to a cure.
View 8 Replies View RelatedI am new to Ubuntu. I recently upgraded my Ubuntu from 9.10 to 10.4 (64bit) since then I am unable to dual boot to WIN2K3 from the same HDD as my Ubuntu. I have ran some of the suggestions like: Sudo update grub and Testdisk both did not provide any errors on my partitions and my primary partition displayed in Testdisk was WIN2K3, now when I reboot and select it from the boot menu it just simply show a blinking cursor.
I am out of ideas and I need a solution to suit my configuration. I prefer not to re-install or repair any WIN2K3 OS. Can someone assist and let me know what you need from me to further understand my issue.
I have Windows Vista Home Premium and I don't want to switch entirely to Fedora because I'm not as familiar with it as I am Windows. I mainly wanted to install Fedora for my Linux class at the Community College I attend. How do I install it with a dual boot so it doesn't take over Windows Vista? I read a some installation guides and was told that dual-booting will allow me use both OS without problems.Last night, I created three partitions on the hard disk, one of them is the primary partition for my Vista OS. Then I went ahead to install Fedora on one of the other partitions. The Fedora worked fine. The only problem is that when I choose Other in the Grub boot menu my Windows Vista goes straight to the recovery screen and does not boot. I don't want to do a point recovery. Is Vista not running because I shrunk it or because of some configuration that I did not add in the Grub files. How to solve this problem and get Vista running properly from the dual boot menu?

Computer boots up and gives me the grub boot screen where I can choose from: ubuntu, some memory tests and windows recovery environment (loader). But no Windows Vista. When I boot the windows recovery option the windows boot loading screen comes up but then the screen turns blank but the hard drive is still working and the wifi light also comes on my keyboard. Ubuntu is working completely fine I just need to find a way of getting Grub to display Vista instead of the Recovery environment.

I have just downloaded Ubuntu 11.04 and am trying to install it on a dual boot system with Windows Vista. I get as far as "Allocate drive space" but there are no partitions to choose from. View 9 Replies View RelatedI upgraded from grub to grub2 recently, and during an update of my system, it ran the update-grub command which prompted a window asking me where to install Grub. Since I didn't know what partition to install it to and the help suggested to install it to all if I was unsure what partition to install it to - I accidentally installed Grub to my Windows partitions (both the regular and the recovery console).
So now, I can't boot into Windows - the computer just hangs after Grub with a blinking cursor and I have to perform a hard reset. Is there any way for me to restore the boot record for the windows partition without having to reinstall windows from the ground up?! I can't use Linux for my webbanking and other important tasks, so (unfortunately) I need Windows back desperately!
I have been trying out different Linux distros to dual boot with Windows Vista. First I tried Ubuntu and it worked fine. Then I tried Fedora 15 and it worked fine as well. Then I went back to Ubuntu but now I have decided to stick with Fedora. The first time I installed Fedora it gave me options for choosing default OS and other things, now I can't remember how I did that and can't figure out how to do that agian. How do I do that agian? Thus, when I boot the computer, I am prompted by a GRUB screen to select Windows Vista loader, Debian, and Debian (recovery mode). I would like to upgrade Windows Vista to Windows 7. Will this cause an issue with GRUB? Will a Windows 7 loader be added to the list or will a Windows 7 loader replace the Windows Vista loader? Will there have to be a setting change within Debian? I had installed Fedora 13 on an unused partition of my ATA hard-drive yesterday. The primary OS here was Windows Vista.
Anyway, everything was working fne for coupla hours after which I had to restart F13 for some reason. This is when all the trouble began ..
Fedora wouldn't boot cause of some "power issues" - there were none. Windows Vista wouldn't boot because "BootMGR was missing"
I figured if I removed Fedora using the live CD - format the partition, it would help. It didn't. Well, atleast the partition got formatted. I tried re-installing F13 from the live CD but it doesn't finish the process - saying a command, something to do with 'shutdown' is not valid.
I tried repairing Vista from the Installation DVD but it is unable to do so.
Right now, on rebooting the computing, I enter the 'grub' console. I tried using grub commands to boot "Windows" from the (hd0,0) partition like thus,

But it still maintains that "BootMGR is missing" .
i have recently started my masters degree program and i have to install fedora 11 for one of my courses. The problem is when i try to install fedora 11 on my laptop, it wipes out my windows vista installation. I want to keep vista. I have a sony vaio laptop model VGN-FW340D. 4GB RAM and 400 GB HD. i first shrink my hard drive to free up around 100 GB. Then i run fedora 11 DVD and let it make the partitions on my free space.. I have tried everything.. I chose use free space the first time, but i didnt work, it wiped out my vista, next time i chose custom layout and defined boot, root and swap partitions , but again it wiped out my vista.. I have read many guides to dual boot vista and fedora and have carried them out step by step, but nothing works.... Also i dont have vista installation DVD, i just have the recovery CDs, so everytime it wipes out my vista, i have to do system recovery, ive been trying for a week now, and its driving me crazy, i asked a friend of mine to help me out, he has dual boot system, and he tried it and it did the same thing, wiped out my vista... i just have one drive C: with two partitions, one small partitions which contains recovery files, and the rest of the partition has vista.......

I wanted to test drive GRUB2 so I upgraded following instructions here:When I chainloaded GRUB2, I got a menu that only contained Ubuntu; my Windows Vista bootloader entry had disappeared. I couldn't find a sample "40_custom" entry to modify when I tried to create an entry for Vista myself. Had no problem booting into Ubuntu and I could still boot Vista from the old menu. Spent about 20 minutes on it, then I gave up and reinstalled legacy GRUB.
