Ubuntu :: Gparted Limited When Partitioning Vista HD?

I have a question someone may help with. Why is it Vista seems to be so off limits to partitioning? I have never seen it where you could not create partitions like you want until I ran across Vista on a Compaq Presario F 700 Laptop. I finally got The vista partitioning tool too to allow me 12 Gigs but that is it. I seemingly can go no further. I would like to keep Vista on there but take it to the bare minimum HD size, so I can load other linux OS's.
I have 56 gigs of free space after installing ubuntu 9.10 So far I haven't been able to make a swap partition or any other partition for that matter. Is there a way to manipulate Vista partitions?

I have available Space and i want this Space on my Ubuntu. That Means that l want the unallocated 92.77GB on my /dev/sda8 (ext4)?!?!?. But I cant Resize the Partition ... What do I have to do ? I tried it using Ubuntu on my USB. But it was the same.... Do I have to unmount something?

I find myself in a position to go full time, on at least one computer in my home, to Ubuntu. On a side note, I'm not overly thrilled with the new Unity, but I'm certain that before 11.10 comes about, most of what irritates me about it will be fixed.
My problem is now not really involving Ubuntu, but to commit this computer to full time Ubuntu, I've decided to remove the Windows Partition completely. (I can access what I need through VirtualBox. I don't think anyone really ever gets COMPLETELY away from Windows, but that's a different subject.) Anyway, here is a picture of my partition table.
What I'd like to do is completely remove the windows partitions, which are obviously the first two on here, and then extend my Ubuntu partition to the left to fill in what will then become unallocated space. However, when I try this, I don't have the option to grow my Ubuntu partition to the left. How DO I do that? I know I've heard of it being done before, and I can't be the first to have run into this situation.

I now have an install of Ubuntu 10.10 on a USB drive and would like to clone the result onto another USB drive of the same size. Both USB drives are 4Gb. I've used Gparted Partitioning Editor and have copied from the master USB stick to another USB stick. Looking from within the editor they look the same in terms of configuration after the copying process e.g same filesystem boot flag set.
When I try to boot off the copied USB stick it comes up with a 'no operating system' message at boot. Is this the right tool to use to clone USB sticks or is there another option?

For the GParted partitioning options, when creating or changing a partition on a SATA hard drive, which option is best to use; (align to cylinder, or to MiB )? The newest version of GParted I used, and it did default to "align to MiB, which then created 1 MB gaps between some partitions. Is it better to have no gaps, and is this new version safe to use to move and or resize NTFS windows partitions ? Will it include the boot sector when it moves or resizes ntfs ?

I'm currently running ubuntu on my netbook, and vista on my desktop. Earlier i had an ubuntu installation alongside my vista, this has resaulted in my desktop making a countdown at booting. After the countdown it boots up vista. So i'm aware that there still are som leftovers from my earlier umuntu adventures.... here is my objective: I want to keep my vista installation intact, BUT i need to clear all earlier grub and ubuntu installations...and finally I want to install a fresh ubuntu 10.04.

I'm trying to install jaunty at the moment, running off of live CD, and for some odd reason, the excellent sliding partitioner in hardy has been removed and I have to prepare my partitions beforehand. Unfortunatley the reason I am installing ubuntu on this particular computer is because (surprise) windows failed. Basically this means, although I'd be happy to install 'buntu to my whole HDD, I, or more specifically, some relatives, have important data on the windows partition making this unacceptable. I tried changing the vista partition size via GParted, but all the options are greyed out and I can't even give myself a not so generous 100GB of space. (180GB~ free space on HDD). Any help would be greatly appreciated, but if I loose this data (and through extension, the gov't looses their precious income taxes).

So far I've been dual-booting Vista and Intrepid, and I decided I'd shrink down the Linux partition a bit, expand the Windows partition and reinstall Ubuntu fresh from a Live CD. I booted up from a Live CD, mounted the old Linux filesystem to check that I hadn't missed any documents to back up before I wiped the partition, and then cued up the relevant operations in GParted.
The key mistake I made was not to unmount the old Linux partition first, which led GParted to bug out and, apparently, stop my Windows partition from working. GParted no longer recognises the partition as NTFS - it tells me it's an unknown filesystem, and refuses to move or resize it.
sudo fdisk -l recognises the partition as HPFS/NTFS. Running chkdsk from a Vista recovery disk has been, so far, unsuccessful. What else can I do to either make the partition bootable again, or at least access it from Linux so I can pull my files off?

I have an HP Compaq nx6235 Notebook, which was happily running Windows Vista Home Premium, until I finally got around to loading Linux openSUSE 11.1 from a DVD issued with a magazine last year. I now have a problem, because my Windows Vista has been wrapped up in the Linux partitioning system. I know it is located at dev/sda1 and that it is an HPFS/NTFS filetype, create a dual boot drive on my notebook, so that I can happily play with both systems. I am newbie, so the instructions should be as clear and simple as possible.

I have 3 Ubuntu installations & a PCLINUXOS, plus Windows XP installed on one hard disk. I still can boot to each one of them and can mount each one using Ubuntu.
The problem "may" have occurred when I reduced the size of some linux partitions using gparted. I still have plenty of space in each of those partitions.
When I started gparted all of the HD was unallocated. I did that from each ubuntu installation and the PCLINUX installation, plus LIVECDs. All indicated the space was unallocated.
When I did an fdisk -l from a Puppy Linux LiveCD I got a normal start and ends of each partition.
When I tried it from Ubuntu installation or live cd, I received the following types of responses:

Since all of my OS installations are still working, I don't know how critical this is. From reading another post, I understand this might be able to be fixed by making some changes in fstab.

I have a single hard-drive on a spare computer and I decided to try out Ubuntu on recommendation from a friend. I really like it now but at first I just dual-booted it, and now I want Vista gone. I know it's unnecessary to have just one OS but my hard-drive isn't particularly big and I'd prefer to have Ubuntu by itself. Can anyone tell me how to eliminate vista and leave Ubuntu as my sole operating system (I've all my files from computer on another computer so I don't have to worry about losing anything).

I installed Ubuntu 10.10 on my PC running Vista Home Basic. I installed to run as a dual boot but now I can only boot into Ubuntu. I have tried to run the recovery disk for Vista and it errors out also..

I am trying to boot up Vista Home Premium from USB since my internal (bootable) CD-RW drive has failed and I cannot boot up Vista from CD.
I have Ubuntu running in the Windows partition and all my windows files are in there so I don't want to do a full installation of Ubuntu (yet).
I formatted an 8GB USB stick into two partitions
I then copied over to /dev/sdb1 all files from a Vista CD using an external CD-RW drive (which is not recognised as bootable on USB port).
In my Dell BIOS settings I changed the boot sequence to be bootable from USB disk first.
then I tried to reboot Vista installation in the USB stick.
But I get this message ..."this is not a bootable disk .. insert a bootable floppy"
So I could not boot up the Vista installation files.
When the boot flag is "on" in a GParted created partition does this make the partition DOS bootable for Vista installation?
My question is - What utility in Ubuntu 10.10 can create a DOS bootable partition on a USB stick? It seems that the MBR might have been overwritten when I installed Grub 2.0.
I can Grub dual boot between Windows and Ubuntu but I can't get very far with Windows .. stalls in safe mode.
So a Vista repair is called for. I would prefer not to reinstall Vista afresh at this stage.

i have recently started my masters degree program and i have to install fedora 11 for one of my courses. The problem is when i try to install fedora 11 on my laptop, it wipes out my windows vista installation. I want to keep vista. I have a sony vaio laptop model VGN-FW340D. 4GB RAM and 400 GB HD. i first shrink my hard drive to free up around 100 GB. Then i run fedora 11 DVD and let it make the partitions on my free space.. I have tried everything.. I chose use free space the first time, but i didnt work, it wiped out my vista, next time i chose custom layout and defined boot, root and swap partitions , but again it wiped out my vista.. I have read many guides to dual boot vista and fedora and have carried them out step by step, but nothing works.... Also i dont have vista installation DVD, i just have the recovery CDs, so everytime it wipes out my vista, i have to do system recovery, ive been trying for a week now, and its driving me crazy, i asked a friend of mine to help me out, he has dual boot system, and he tried it and it did the same thing, wiped out my vista... i just have one drive C: with two partitions, one small partitions which contains recovery files, and the rest of the partition has vista.......

I have a eeePC 901, currently installed with 9.10, and pretty much fully updated. If I try and update to 10.04 using the package update, it fails due to lack of space, OS is in the 4GB SSD. Is there some way that I can perform the update without a re-install?

I have a cdr and a computer I would like to install ubuntu on or at least get a live cd running. I only have a 650mb cd-r though and the computer wont support usb booting. How that can be accomplished? I cant boot into windows either on the comp I wish to install Ubuntu. I plan on making it a Ubuntu-only computer as the windows is old and password protected by users long gone. I am ready to wipe it clean with a new install of Ubuntu.

I have debian lenny with these kernels:

NO one recognize more then 4 GB and BIOS recognize all Ram. I read about it and the only solution I found is to compile another custom kernel and active support to 64GB RAM.
Can I just insert some patch to my currently kernel and resolve this problem? (Support more then 4GB)

I recently switched from Ubuntu to Lubuntu on my Acer Aspire netbook. When I had Ubuntu, in System Preferences I had a Sound mixer that would allow me to set the volume beyond 100%. It simply said "Sound" and was different than the applet feature. Both were preinstalled. With Lubuntu, I seem to have lost this option. I went through and installed Gnome ALSA Mixer along with Pulse Audio Control, but neither does what this simple volume control feature on Ubuntu did. My speakers are horrible, and the previous "Sound" feature really let me crank it up a bit. I'm not trying to blow my speakers out or anything;

I'd like to add essentially an anonymous user, which does not require a password. Second I think it's probably a good idea to only give this user very limited permissions, is there a way I can restrict the commands that they can run to a list (i.e. they should be able to run scp, ls, cd, maybe a few more, but not much)?

I want to have an account (beta user), on which:I can use the Internet and other programs without administrative rights without the right to install programs with a kind of sandbox for everything that is connected to the Internet, which means: everything that is associated with the web browser's processes and files that I save to hard disk I want to be separated from the rest of the system, so that whatever can catch up on this account will be locked in it, for example any (if at all) possible malicious scripts from Internet or whatever may be dangerous now or invented in the future. Sometimes, for example, I save the web page to disk with all it content.
And in case someone cracked into this account I want make it in that way that he could not do any tricks to read or change passwords, or make any other changes to the system. The best would be if a password for that user might serve only to log in without having any other powers, and I would give that user an automatic login. For now I created a beta user without administrative rights. I understand that the limiting rights of the user are associated with limiting rights to their home directory. There are also groups, and a user may be included or excluded. I excluded that user from admin group but I don't know what else I can limit and how. When I give chmod 0644 for /home of this user he cannot run Firefox. When I give him 0740 he can run applications, so I assume the x attribute must be preserved.
This is a user without sudo rights, so when I type sudo apt-get update a message shows up correctly that this user doesn't belong to the sudoers group. But still it's not what I wanted. When the user runs Gufw and wants to change the settings to disable the firewall, a message shows up asking to type in a password of alpha user = primary user, which is that belonging to the sudoers group, the first / main user that I created during system installation. I wish that there was only the message that the beta user has no power to change anything, which means even completely remove the possibility of asking for sudo.
In addition, I wish that this beta couldn't be able to change the permissions to its home directory, or go to see what is above. Because so far beta can change the file permissions for its /home, even without a sudo password. How can I do it? Do I need to create a kind of chroot jail for this user? I would like any changes to that user account could be made only after the user log off from beta account, and log in on alfa account and that beta could run only programs that ware installed by alpha. And that beta could read and write, but alfa could also read and write or remove, alter files on beta account. Basically, alfa account should be superior to beta account. Can do that?

I installed Linux Mint 9 LTS onto the family computer last weekend, everything went okay apart from today when suddenly it displays a low disk space message.
The machine has a 250Gb HDD, and has the base install of Mint, plus Dropbox and Google Chrome. (Dropbox has about 500Mb in it). That's it.
The disk usage analyzer tells me that /home is 100% full, yet when I look into each dropdown there is barely enough to make 2Gb of usage. (The most being Dropbox).

I installed Fedora 12 into a virtual Machine (using virtualbox). Everything was perfect but the screen resolution is only 800*600. I cannot read the text fine and work is impossible.I searched already other posts but i couldn't find anything helpful.How can i set the resolution at least at ca 1280*1024?

I'm running a fully updated Fedora 15.In Evolution's calendar, my days are limited to 12 hours: from 0:00 to 11:45, always.Under preferences->Calendar and Tasks->General, I have "day begins" as 07:00, and "day ends" as 23:30. Changing these numbers has no effect whatsoever. Selecting "12 hour" under "time format" also does nothing.I REALLY hope this isn't a deliberate change by the Evolution developers. My days have normally consisted of more than 12 hours since I was three or four (I'd have to call my parents to ask). Jokes aside, what's going on and how do I change this?

Having given up on a failed OpenSuse 10.3 and installed 11.2, I am now unable to get better screen resolution then 800 X 400. Previously there was no apparent limit, so I know the Viewsonic display is capable of much more.
In Yast2 the nvidia graphics card is identifed OK, but even in Yast I can find no way of getting back to the higher resolution. In the Desktop-tweaking app all I get offered is even lower resoulutions.

Can't make Slack 13.1 to run at more than 1024x768. No problems where with 12.0-13.0. Here are portions of my xorg.conf and Xorg.0.log:

Note the last line marked (**) - "from config file", but I only have 1280x1024 there ! And what does that mean
(II) NV(0): Using fuzzy aspect match for initial modes

(--) NV(0): Virtual size is 1024x1024 (pitch 1024)
And KDE/Display only offers up to 1024x768 too. Didn't try NVIDIA driver yet but 13.0 had no problems with the same monitor,similar Card and nv driver.
