CentOS 5 Server :: High Priority - Apache Will Not Start
Nov 20, 2010It is now almost 3 'o clock in the night here, last 5 hours trying to fix this problem. CentOS always runs perfectly here. I am not a genie with the terminal so wanted to install GNOME on my vps, than vnc but didn't work and did a restart.
Now got this:

General :: Video Prevent Screensaver When Flash Is Running
Apr 6, 2011I apologize if this is the wrong place to ask, or if this has been asked before, but it has been bugging me for some time and I have not had any luck with it. I imagine that my problem is not unique to my circumstances, but here goes.I am running Arch Linux, and quite frequently watch videos, particularly flash, in fullscreen. However, eventually, the screensaver appears, and starts dimming the screen. I have the screensaver set to run whenever the computer is 'idle'. Does anyone know a way to either.Stop the screensaver from appearing when in a flash video or watching other video?Stop the screensaver from appearing when a flash video or normal video is full-screened? Heck, even..Let the screensaver know that my machine is not idle when watching flash.

Ubuntu Servers :: Run High-priority Multi-threaded Processes In The Background?
Apr 7, 2011Using Ubuntu server 10.04.2 64-bit all up to date.
I am running multi-threaded processes. These use OpenMP in my own code and the multi-threaded ACML maths library. When run in the foreground, everything is fine i.e. if I have set
export OMP_NUM_THREADS=8
then when I start all 8 cores are in use and things whizz along. However, when running overnight and logged out using e.g. 'at now + 1 minute' then the command, I am only getting about 130% CPU and it slows down accordingly. I have tried renice'ing and calling from within a bash script in case sh is doing something odd but nothing seems to solve it. I am sure that in the recent past this wasn't the case.
The libraries being used are shared versions in case that might have any bearing.
Server :: Running Apache 2.2.3 - High Swap Usage
Oct 2, 2009I am running Apache 2.2.3 on a CentOS release 5.3 (Final) with 100 Sites. I've notice that Apache is making my server Swap around 200 MBs.
"http://www.xxx.yyy.zzz/server-status" doesn't show me too much to, so I am looking the behavior of specific httpd process.
ProcessID "18753" is the one for "http://www.xxx.yyy.zzz/server-status" in my browser.
This command show me (In KBs) how much virtual memory is that specific process using:
# /etc/init.d/httpd start
# grep Private_Dirty /proc/18753/smaps | awk '{ print $2 }' | xargs ruby -e 'puts ARGV.inject { |i, j| i.to_i + j.to_i }'

... Running this command a lot of times it gives me the same output, but suddenly...

My server is running Mysql 5.1.34, vsftpd 2.0.5, BIND 9.3.4-P1 (as slave). I couldn't found anything running in the specific time that httpd processes start to use that much memory.
Ubuntu :: Prevent System Freeze Due To High RAM Or CPU Usage
May 1, 2011I have been using ubuntu for 4 years now on my decent laptop with 2 Gb RAM, dual core centrino, etc etc. Yet, in all those years I have been using this superior OS, I still have to do hard shutdowns because some program runs wild. I have lately 2 scenarios where I have to interfere with the process:
1: amarok crashes and leaves the python script for the gnome shortcut keys running at 100% CPU. Or: thunderbird-bin keeps running after apparently clean close of Thunderbird. That's not really bothering me, I just kill both processes.
The bigger problem is scenario 2: 2: VLC starts eating all my RAM (for no reason), my SWAP starts filling and my computer becomes unusable for 10 minutes. Or: my matlab script is too big and eats up too much RAM -> same. Note: I have nothing against SWAP because at many other times it's very useful
These are stupid and annoying problems where there is an easy solution:
1) automatically kill the stupid process that runs at 100% CPU
2) automatically kill the stupid process that eats up all my RAM

I'm really sick of not being able to ctrl+l or ctrl+tab just because I'm watching a video, and today a video froze in fullscreen mode and I couldn't even ctrl+f1 to any terminals or ctrl+backspace to kill KDE. It would be awesome to stop flash from grabbing certain key commands and pass them to the browser or OS instead.

Feb 25, 2010I am like almost everyone, watching videos on ..... and I am having problems with flash. When I put a video on - even if high definition or not I still get a studder from flash. The video plays but it keeps chopping up and you can see on some frames how the next frame moves on the bottom of the screen and the previous frame is still stuck on the top. Flash does not run smoothly at all - that is on every video. I am suppose to be on the latest flash version for linux off of addobe.

Dec 24, 2010For some reason after I close firefox , firefox-bin keeps running and it eats more cpu than when firefox was open, a lot more. Same thing with seamonkey, seamonkey-bin keeps running after it is closed.

Programming :: Timings Of A Program That Uses 1-8 Threads On A Server That Has 4 D?
Jul 25, 2010I am runig a program on a server at my university that has 4 Dual-Core AMD Opteron(tm) Processor 2210 HE and the O.S. is Linux version 2.6.27.25-78.2.56.fc9.x86_64. My program implements Conways Game of Life and it runs using pthreads and openmp. I timed the parrallel part of the program using the getimeofday() function using 1-8 threads. But the timings don't seem right. I get the biggest time using 1 thread(as expected), then the time gets smaller. But the smallest time i get is when i use 4 threads.
Here is an example when i use an array 1000x1000.
Using 1 thread~9,62 sec, Using 2 Threads~4,73 sec, Using 3 ~ 3.64 sec, Using 4~2.99 sec, Using 5 ~4,19 sec, Using 6~3.84, Using 7~3.34, Using 8~3.12.The above timings are when i use pthreads. When i use openmp the timing are smaller but follow the same pattern.I expected that the time would decrease from 1-8 because of the 4 Dual core cpus? I thought that because there are 4 cpus with 2 cores each, 8 threads could run at the same time. Does it have to do with the operating system that the server runs?
Also i tested the same programs on another server that has 7 Dual-Core AMD Opteron(tm) Processor 8214 and runs Linux version 2.6.18-194.3.1.el5. There the timings i get are what i expected. The timings get smaller starting from 1(the biggest) to 8(smallest excecution time).The program implements the Game of Life correct, both using pthreads and openmp, i just cant figure out why the timings are like the example i posted. So in conclusion, my questions are:
1) The number of threads that can run at the same time on a system depends by the cores of the cpus?it depends only by the cpus although each cpu has more than one cores? It depends by all the previous and the Operating System?
2) Does it have to do with the way i divide the 1000x1000 array to the number of threads? But if i did then the openmp code wouldn't give the same pattern of timings?
3)What is the reason i might get such timmings?

Sep 10, 2009I have an HP GL380 with an MSA20 connected for storage space, we use it as an nas unit. The system is SLES 10. We use both NFS and SMB for file sharing, no special users and so. We are 8-10 users of the machine. We store both large and small files such at thumbnails and disk images.
Now, my problem. I�d like to give more priority for reading files on the server, so a user can look at pictures without problem, and if another user is writing an image file of an disk (10-1000 GB) this writing process should get less priority. The most important is always reading files, to get the job done.

May 14, 2010As mentioned in "man swapon" priority value is between 0 and 32767. BUT usually if we add swap devices without giving the priority, their priorities are set as -2, -3, -4 and so on; values which does not fall between 0 and 32767.Why is it so ? Any ideas ? However, I know we can change them through "swapon -p". But, if do not wish to do so, it uses -2, -3, -4 only. Like below,

Ubuntu :: Laptop High Heat And Constant Running?
May 2, 2010Just put a fresh clean copy of Lucid on the laptop. I have noticed this for a while on the otherr versions and distros also, and finally started looking at. My laptop runs, contantly.The fan seems to be always running. I don't have more the a couple of applications at time, I don't use it for work, so nothing extensive. Web browsing, music, email, photos. End user stuff. So I added a heat application in the panel just to see what was happening. I can get the temp down to around 150F-ish if I am not even looking at the laptop. But, open anything and start workingand I am sitting arround 183F-185F. Is this normal? I am just getting toired of having such a hot laptop on my lap, I even have a pad under it so the air can circulate witht the fan, but, a constant running fan is what I have and the heat can be felt through the pad if I am sitting for a couple of hours.

Ubuntu Installation :: 10.4 Upgrade, Xorg, Cpu, Fans Gone Nuts Running High/low?
Apr 28, 2010I upgraded my Asus Eeepc 900a to 10.4 yesterday. Since then, Xorg has averaged between 30-40% CPU, and my fans have gone nuts running high/low/high/low, ad nausium.
Any ideas what might be going on? Another clue perhaps: on reboot or shutdown, I get a "program not responding" message with "unknown" as the hung program. I have not been able to determine what this program is or if it is related to the hyperactive Xorg.
