change as I salvaged an old old computer and got it back into working order. Windows 7 kills the computer and the media being served is sluggish and slow.

Recently installed Ubuntu, I've got 2 * 500GB HDDs, mounted and partitioned, but I don't have read/write access to them, only root does.. How can i get access to save files and create folders etc?

After the 10,000th problem, I decided to just make room for a fresh lucid install and the accompanying stability. It worked well, then I had some sort of a boot error upon reboot. So then I just decided to reinstall. The problem is that neither of my 2 internal HDDs is registering. Currently sda is an 80GB drive with a slackware install, sdb is a 120GB with a 60GB mint partition and (upon previous install) 60GB lucid partition. I've got no important data on any of my partitions yet, but also no net connection. I have install dvds for lucid, mint kde 9, and slackware plus a gparted live. I'm seriously considering making this machine a slack standalone, but then I've got legacy nvidia drivers to deal with.
View 1 Replies View RelatedI'm new to the world of Ubuntu 10.10. My PC had windows Vista running on an 80GB HDD, and on Friday 03/12/10 I decided to install Ubuntu 10.10 on a second 160GB HDD. Wrongly I assumed I could simply have 2 HDD's in my PC and it would magically allow me to chose between Windows Vista and Ubuntu 10.10. Well that was 50 hours ago and I still can't get it to work. As you can see I have the results of my boot_info_script055.sh below.

I have Vista installed a 500 gb and recently added a 320 gb hard drive. How do I install ubuntu on to the 320 gb HDD and be able to dual boot the 2 operating systems? Also how do I keep myself from getting the symbol 'grub_puts' not found error when updating to 10.4?
View 5 Replies View RelatedI'm having an issue with formatting the HDDs during the CentOS 5.5 installation.I've set up a hardware RAID1 with 2TB HDDs using FastTrack TX4650 (http:url... as a RAID controller.Then I tried to install CentOS 5.5 32-bit version using this configuration. I preloaded the required RAID drivers for the CentOS and started the installation. Everything went fine until the part where the CentOS formats the HDD - it took 12 hours and the process still goes on. I cannot determine whether the install process is stuck or the HDD is still being formatted.how long the formatting should take considering the above mentioned configuration?

I've only ever had a single HDD before, but now I have 2 * 640GB drives.Does it matter what OS I install first?Will I have to change anything relating to the HDDs boot order in the BIOS?I only got 2 HDDs so in the event of needing to reinstall one of the OS's they're on completely different drives. Also, in the eventuality I need to reinstall one of the OSs is it simply a normal reinstall procedure, or because they're on two seperate drives will I need to do anything different?
View 7 Replies View RelatedI'm 'trying' to dual boot WinXP and Ubuntu 10.10 from 2 separate HDD's. Currently I'm on attempt number 6 but my patience wore thin about 2 days ago - here's the current state of play: I have WinXP running fine (Was installed first) and I have Ubuntu running fine if I use a boot loader disc. I don't have any boot options at all - if I let the PC boot naturally then it just loads XP as normal. I followed this guide to the letter: [URL]
(For those that don't want to read the link: It get's you to create 4 partitions on a drive - 1: ntfs for winxp (not touched) 2: Linux partition 3: linux-swap partition 4: fat32 osshare partition) then if you get no boot options, it creates an ubuntu.bin file which you move to the C: and edit the boot.ini to include it in the options). But all the difference it makes is I get boot options, I press Ubuntu and my computer sits with a blinking cursor for as long as you let it.
I've recently tried to do a full install to a USB stick using a 10.04 cd.
2 things happen as I boot:
1. if Hdds are attached, boot hangs on "checking dmi pool data..."
2. if hdds not attached, "hdd error" scrolls across screen
boots normally w/o the usb stick. I've set up my partitions on usb stick as
1: fat32 2gb <<windows/storage
2: fat32 1.5gb << future persistent install
3: ext4 4gb << hoped-for full install
1 is the first partition so windows finds it nicely. Before install, i unplugged my hdds so that grub wouldn't get confused. I told the installer to put the full install on sda3 with no swap space. I checked (advanced button on summary page) that bootloader is being installed to the usb on dev/sda (sda since no other drives attached). This should put it in the MBR (i think?)
Seems like I pressed all the right buttons huh? Is there a way to diagnose grub and see what's wrong? is there a reason grub may not initialize properly from a usb drive?
I tried to install 64bit 10.04 Release Candidate but it fails every time. I have been using 64bit 9.10 Karmic on this computer so it's suitable for installation.
I tried to install from USB stick and from CD but same error at the same point! It fails just befere it starts to ask your locations etc...
There must be something totally wrong on installer. Checksums are ok etc...
Errors seen with CD and USB stick installation: Pop up: "Istalltion failed The installer encountered an unrecoverable error. A desktop session will now be run so that you may investigate the problem or try installing again."

The instaler doesnt find my partitions and the XP that is installed too! For some reasons i cannot delete the whole hdd... if i format the partition, where (i want to install ubuntu) with fat, the pc crashes during the installing process after the tastaturlayout question! if i try some other formats, the installer tells me, that there are no Operating Systems installed and the hdd is unpartitioned!
if i start ubuntu live from the cd, the system finds all partitions, but if i run cfdisk in a terminal, i get a fatal error (cannot open disk space)... My machine is a acer aspire 1694 WLMi (pretty old, but should be no problem), bios is up to date, Windows is XP home edition with SP3.
I have two HDs, one is a 80gb OS drive(Parallel ATA) and the other is a 1T storage drive (SATA). Well after each reboot they swap between /dev/sda and /dev/sdb, over and over again. One boot the OS is /dev/sda and the next its /dev/sdb, same goes for the second drive. This makes it difficult to setup fstab so it will mount the large storage drive on boot.

I would like to someone replace Windows 7 with Ubuntu on the 500GB drive, but I'm not sure how I would be able to do this and still keep GRUB and such .

I have a NAS box that runs Ubuntu Server and Samba. 4 of the HDDs are in RAID5 (/dev/md1) and I've configured them to spin down after 10 minutes of inactivity. This filesystem is mounted on /share/Media. The other 2 HDDs are NOT configured to spin down. My other computer runs Ubuntu Desktop. I'm mounting the entire /share folder (that's located on NAS) using this entry in /etc/fstab:

I have three physical drives:
Drive 0: Used for paging file in windows and general temp file storage
Drive 1: Media storage
Drive 2: Windows installation
When booting off the Ubuntu 10.04 disc and running the installer, it gets up to the partition step and doesn't find my Windows installation (for the automatic partitioning and such) and lists Drive 0 as the drive it will install to. I really want it to see my Windows install and create a partition on that same drive. Can anyone help me in getting the installer to see the Windows installation?
i have a question regarding how data is placed on a media, for example the daily used hdd: when we talk about storage we often speak in heads sectors and cylinders. my question is if heads, sectors and cylinder is the true way data exists on a hdd platter?
lets take for example, disk_x
1000.2gb = 1000204886016 bytes
255 heads, 63 sectors/track 121601 cylinders.
fdisk -H 128 -S 32 /dev/disk_x each cylinder will be shrank to 2097152bytes, number of cylinders will grow to 476934. but everything will be much more aligned and readable or there is something i don't know and i will loose almost half of the total sector count on the hdd cause 63-32=31. i asked the partitioner just to use 32 sectors from each track and only 128 tracks of the cylinder.
or another example, if i have a cluster size of 4k. why not making each track use 56 sectors or 7 clusters. theoretically i have all files in my storage and each one of them occupies 14 clusters isn't it wiser to make it as described. what happens when i invoke fdisk -h -s params? what will be changed, the disc physically and the way it is accessed or only the partition table? you probably asking your self what the hell does this dude wants? i want to get maximum i/outputs and the widest bandwidth and the nicest readble partition tables and to understand better fdisk -H -S.
I whant to know,is HDD Regenerator for linux? I completely at linux and sometimes i need to create usb flash hdd regenerator for testing hdds.

I am attempting to install 32 bit ubuntu 10.04-i386.iso from boot on a Windows XP Pro standalone desktop PC. I have unused hard drive partitions available for the ubuntu installation. At one point the installation dialog box informs me that there is no OS installed on the PC, and the installation program does not correctly indicate the existing Windows hard drive partitions. At that point I abort the installation process.Can anyone advise me how to proceed from this point. I am an old MSoft OS user from way back - I started when DOS was all that there was. Downloaded i386 desktop image and created a bootable USB stick with the image. System boots fine but installer do not detect My HDD. It only lists my USB drive. Even Gparted donot detect the drive. Typing sudo fdisk -l also lists only my USB Drive.

Anyway I am wondering if there is a way to install ubuntu 10.10 64-bit with Windows 7 64-bit.
I try to install Ubuntu 10.10 on HP notebook G62 (Intel-i3, 64-bit). It have a 320GB hdd with my laptop which now consists of:
1) SYSTEM volume
2) (C: ) volume with windows 7
3) RECOVERY (D: ) volume
4) HP_TOOLS volume
1 to 4 are originally there. And now I shrink (C: ) by 50GB to get a unallocated space in which I decide to install ubuntu: First I try to shrink by Windows7 tools, but installer did not see unallocated space (but shows list of my volumes). Then I install Acronis disk director and made 50GB unallocated space by Acronis. After this Ubuntu installer does not see any volumes on my HDD Windows7 boots had works normally. I try to restore ALL from image by HP TOOLS but without result - installer doesn't see any volumes. I try boot from CD, remove dmraid and all raid package and try run installer - no result.
I'm trying to install ubuntu 10.10 onto my desktop via usb. Depending on the tool I use to put the image on the USB drive, I get the following outcomes:

whatever the default in results in no signal after the kernel has done it's work (i.e when the graphics kick in)
"Install Ubuntu to Hard Drive" results in a quick flash of graphical garbage, then an 'incomplete' gnome desktop; the wallpaper is there, a blank menubar with some of the top-right icons (like power etc.) but nothing else. Mouse moves but left, right click and keyboard does nothing. Can't move to the different terminals either.
UNetbootin One option is a blank screen, another results in graphical garbage which appears to be whatever was left in video ram? There was a cool collage effect of my windows logoff screen cursor is fully formed and moves, but that's all.
This isn't limited to Ubuntu 10.10; Fedora 14 has the same problem, but I can boot into basic video and get a desktop. Obviously, I don't want Fedora
I'm assuming my problems are the result of the nouveau video drivers, so my question is this; how do I get ubuntu to use an okay (preferably not basic vesa) graphics driver so I can install? And if I can do this, will enabling nouveau again (a newer version hopefully) cause my problems to continue?

Setting my pata cdrom to slave and plugging it into the slave position of the ide ribbon.
I've tried these combinations with the usb installer, and dvd installer.
I've tried loading the live cd/dvd & usb then running the installer with in.
I've tried the spacebar method, hitting f6 and apci=no, noapci
The live cd has no problems detecting and mounting my hdd, however the installer does not detect it.
I just did an 11.04 install onto a thinkpad w520 with 16 GB RAM. free - m shows 3.5GB (as does top)
browsing help/forums it seems the 11.04 installer should have detected my RAM and installed the proper kernel.
everything functionally seems great, just missing most of my RAM. I went with 32 bit ubuntu because most people (including canonical on their download page), recommend it. I may move to 64 bit, but would like to solve this for 32 bit first.
I have a site that users upload files on. Its on a dedicated server with 2 HDDs and the first HDD is 97% full, is it possible to use the other HDD for the files users upload? if so how?
