I use Windows 7: Home Premium and I have three partitions on my hard disk. Lately I installed Ubuntu NOT on C: (win 7) BUT on D: (size 104 GB). Now, I CAN'T find the drive (D:) on Ubuntu. However I can still find it on Win 7.

Hey everyone, i am trying to install 10.10 on a netbook i have, and i did it all okay, but it would not boot up, so I want to re-format the hard drive, but the hard drive is not showing up on the partition editor (only thing that is showing is the usb i'm booting up off of)
I finally got it to install windows xp, but i really only want to put ubuntu on it (no need for windows on a net book)
So I recently started using Windows 7, but it kept crashing so i thought "OK back to WinXP and Ubuntu 10.10" So I installed Windows (urrrggh) and that went fine, but now that I have come to installing Ubuntu Desktop 10.10, it cant seem to find the Windows XP partition, I tried manually editing partitions but it wouldnt let me resize the partition. But it did give me the option to install the Bootloader (GRUB) to the partition labelled "Windows XP Professional".
I have used this setup before and ran fine, bare in mind that was with 9.10, maybe I should install 9.10 and then use "sudo apt-get install dist-upgrade"?If i cant get this working I will try another distro and see if its Ubuntu or whether its a Windows or disk issue.
i have 500 GB SATA drive with windows 7 and Ubuntu 11.04 500 GB drive divided in 3 partitions on one partition thers is windows 7 and on 2nd Ubuntu now i'm installing a software it's asking where you want to load your Grub and i don't know in which partition my GRUB is. my question is is there any way to find out which parition got my Ubuntu GRUB?

After install, I stated grub may be newly written, as the list of os was fine. After reboot I got "grub rescue>" I managed to get the system working again, and now I have a grub2 menu list stating correct entries. But when I select the server entry the boot fails telling "disk not found" (The UUID of the partition given is correct, and also shown when accessing the partition from the 9.10 desktop (this needs an additional authentification when mounting) grub shell command ls does not show the partition, all other tools (life-CD, working installation, gparted etc.) do show it normally, I cannot find any difference. i made a 10gb partition last time i had linux installed on my netbook. im trying to install ubuntu nbr on that partition when i try to select the 10gb partition(comes up as free space) it says "No root file system is defined please correct this from the partitioning menu" ? I dont get it last time i installed it i had the option to resise my windows partition thats how i made it.
View 2 Replies View RelatedI have created startup disk on my external USB HDD (on /dev/sdb1), I have been using it for some time, installed lots of software etc.Now I would like to install it properly onto the same HDD. I have partitioned the rest of the drive (formatted /dev/sdb2 as ext4 for it), but when I try to install, the installer complains about needing to unmount /dev/cdrom (which is in fact a loopback image on /dev/sdb1), although I don't want to touch that partition (even unchecked grub option).
So, couple of questions:
1) How to install it onto the same USB HDD, different partition?
2) (optional) How to preserve everything I have installed?

I'm running Ubuntu 11.04 on my Acer extensa 5620. I need to install windows and setup a dual boot on this machine. Here's what I did. I followed the instructions on this page

and resized my home partition (which is differenet from the file system partition). Anyways, I resized the partition and made a new NTFS partition. This was all done from Live CD. I then rebooted and then tried the windows installation CD. Now here my problem crops up.
Windows says that no partition is found. What have I done wrong? Any ideas? Can the drive be damaged or have I made a mistake some where? I did not specify a mount point for the new NTFS partition, does that matter?

mini hp 2133 does not have a DVD or CD ROM. So i'm installing this form a USB.
I've tried installing Ubuntu from the installation disk, flash drive, and using windows installer. The drive and disk said I didn't have enough memory open to install (I have 160GB open)upon looking around in the demo, i noticed that it couldn't find my hard drive as it wasn't on the drive explorer. So i searched for answers and found a few possible ones but i wanted to find someone with my exact problem--Couldn't find any. So then I came upon the Windows Installer and Tried it out. All went well until i had to reboot, it said it couldn't find the installation.iso (which is indeed on my computer) and that i should run "Chkdsk /r" and i did. Nothing changed. I still believe that Ubuntu can't see my hard drive when windows can, why is this? Is there a way to fix it? EDIT: How could I forget to mention I'm on Windows 7?
View 5 Replies View RelatedI have a new 1.5tb internal drive I want to partition as NTFS (because Windoze machines need to see/use it) and in gparted, when I go to partition -> new, it says it could not add this operation to the list a partition cannot have a length of -1 sectors. I recall having this issue on my 2tb external drive and I ended up creating the NTFS parition on a Windoze machine and then bringing it to the Linux box but since this is an internal drive, that's not an option. I took all the defaults in the "Create new partition" screen.

I have very little resources at my disposal, as I'm using a netbook with no optical drive, and I can't seem to get the liveusb to work. It just stalls after the menu with an error message. I have no way to connect my machine to the internet, and I've been forced to transfer files from a friend's computer. I'm running out of ideas, but one I thought of was to copy the install partition over to the larger partition. I'm not sure if it's possible, or if it would make a larger install or just a copy of the same size. I just want some clarification on how I would solve this issue, even if my idea doesn't work.
View 1 Replies View RelatedI got Lucid Lynx and i want to partition the drive into two harddrives when i install, like with windows i would have my harddrive made into C and D and i would have windows on the C and all my movies and stuff on D. I saw some things about making the rest of your space to store files in the /home files but i when i log into ubuntu after installing it shows the /home folder inside the disk. I dont know if it makes sense but, i was wondering if u can have it the way windows does it so it looks like two harddives and which options to select when i'm paraitioning. i really want to change over to ubuntu i just wanna work this out first cause i dont know so much yet haha.

If it works i am going to take the back case off of my laptop and install the guts of the flash drive inside my laptop, i think the mod would be cool, i just dont know how to do it on the software side

I have a couple of questions....
1. Does the data above indicate everything is running as it should?
2. What does this command tell me about swap? "/sbin/swapoff /dev/sda7" I read somewhere it should be run on 64-bit system but not sure what it does.
3. Is the command "cat /proc/swaps" the best way to determine if swap is running ok?
4. Can I share this swap partition with another distro, e.g. Ubuntu or Xubuntu? as I would like to multi-boot for testing purposes.
I have a Desktop system using the Intel DG45ID motherboard with integrated graphics. I can't install from the 9.10 LiveCD. It can't find the Hard drive which is on the chipset's SATA controller.However, I can install 9.04 just fine. I can even do the 9.10 upgrade without a problem.Does anyone know if this bug has been reported. I'm hoping 10.4 has this fixed. I'll test the beta to see

Ive tryed more than one cd's and another distro (built on Ubuntu). The hard drive works fine, Ive got Windows 7 already on it (help me change back to linux). I know the computer works fine as I once used another computer to install ubuntu on the harddrive and then moved the harddrive to my computer.

The data size is about 15 gig so no problem there.The system does work and it doing everything it should, except for some errors in dmsg log.The thing is though, that the system works! all the services are running and live.And i have years worth of customizations in this machine. Has been running for several years, so i dont just want to reformat and reinstall. What I want to know is can I partition the 1TB drive to install Ubuntu without any data corruption or anything? I have read that NTFS can lose data if partitioned with data already on it (I have no way of backing up my 100GB of files on the drive, as currently this IS my backup drive). What I want to do is have 900GB for files, and a 100GB partition (or partitions adding up to 100GB) for Ubuntu- what is the best way to do this? I don't need seperate partitions for ubuntu, can I install the whole thing to the 100GB partition and boot from it? Or do I need swap as well? I was thinking of making 900GB partition, 4GB partition for swap (if needed) and 96GB partition for Ubuntu (/ if I understand) as this is what the "erase entire drive" option creates.

I have a computer that I'd like to dual-boot Ubuntu and Windows but the current hard drive is quite fragmented and the Windows partitioner won't allow me to make a partition large enough to comfortably run Linux+several gigabytes of media that need to be stored. The rig, however, may have room for another internal drive, so I thought that having a separate physical disk reserved completely to Linux would be an easy solution. The tech guy at the local computer store suggested there might be difficulties with this configuration because one drive needs to be the "master" and the other a "slave", resulting in boot complications.

View 4 Replies View RelatedI have a Toshiba laptop, running Vista Home Premium SP2 with AMD Athlon 64 X2 Dual-Core Processor, 1 gb ram & 150 gb HDD. I just shrunk the c: drive down to 92 gb to free up 43.5 gb so as to load the Fedora Linux OS into this free space & have a dual-boot configur'n. My problem is the partition table in the MBR. It shows 4 partitions there, so the fedora 13 Live CD which I use to install the OS cannot find a free spot in the partition table. I have the Ultimate Boot CD so I took a look at the MBR. Here are the 4 partitions that occupies its table:
1. (no drive letter) - file system: blank - EISA config'n - 1.46 gb - partition type code: x27
2. C: - fs: ntfs - system, boot, active, primary partition - 92.01 gb - code: x07
3. D: - fs: ntfs - primary - 5.98 gb - code: x07
4. (no drive letter) - fs: blank - primary - 5.64 gb - code: x17
c: is 17% free, d: is 99% free, the other two are 100% free Can you explain what is the purpose of D: ? How about the other two (with no drive letter)? I read somewhere that 'x17' code means 'hidden IFS (ex: HPFS)' & 'x27' means a rescue partition... true?
Would I be safe in replacing the partition table entry for #1, 3 or 4 with an entry for my Linux? (I have an editor that could modify the MBR). Or would it be better to leave MBR alone, put a boot program on a CD or USB stick, which boots Linux from the unallocated 'partition'? (have to somehow manually install Linux to the 43.5 gb area that I freed up).
When I try to install 10.4 on my hard drive, I get all the way to the "Prepare Partitions" menu and there are no disks listed and all button are grayed out. I am installing on an EVGA X58 motherboard with Intel ICH10 and I have AHCI enabled. Does Ubuntu support AHCI? Do I need drivers to install?
View 3 Replies View RelatedI'm upgrading from a 250GB drive to a 500GB drive. I booted into the live-CD, ran gparted and created the necessary partitions:
/dev/sda1 ext4 /
/dev/sda2 swap
/dev/sda3 ext4 /home
then I used dd to transfer data from the old drive to the new drive. Now I am unable to boot into the new drive. I tried to boot again from the live-CD but fdisk reports that the drive has no partition table. I can still mount the devices (e.g. mount /dev/sda3 /mnt/sda3) and I can see all the files. But without a partition table, I can't set one partition to be bootable. Why doesn't gparted create a partition table? it created the filesystems just fine. how do I boot into the new disk? What do I have to do to make grub handle the new disk?
We had a drive failure on /dev/sda. Everything 'except' boot was on raid5 across sda, sdb, sdc, sdd. I know how to repartition a new drive and rebuild the raid etc, but I don't know how to regenerate the files that reside on the boot partition. I really don't want to re-install as we have lot of custom code and software that may depend on our current libraries and build environment.

I want to copy the windows partition from the new lappy to the old bigger HDD so I have room for Ubuntu. All of my files are on a Maverick install on the old lappy.
