We had a drive failure on /dev/sda. Everything 'except' boot was on raid5 across sda, sdb, sdc, sdd. I know how to repartition a new drive and rebuild the raid etc, but I don't know how to regenerate the files that reside on the boot partition. I really don't want to re-install as we have lot of custom code and software that may depend on our current libraries and build environment.

The machine has Windows XP and Ubuntu 9.10.
Before today when I turned the machine on there was a black screen with many Linux kernels to choose from and Windows.
I created another for Fedora and installed it on there - the Ubuntu root partition is still there.
When I boot now, there is a blue Fedora screen with just it and Windows.
To make matters worse Fedora doesn't work with my graphics card (Matrox). I would like to get Fedora working but still want to have the ability to use Ubuntu again.
What do I need to change to be able to boot into Ubuntu again and how do I do it?
i have a netbook compaq mini with a sata toshiba hard drive.XP was installed on this machine until the hard drive started to have bad blocks.Then i bought a mypassport500go to install f14 on it.It worked but know the sata hard drive is more and more faulty.When i try to boot f14 it displays :acpi : package has zero elements. So i cannot boot.I tryed rescuecd, does not work either.i tryed many kernel params to disable sata at boot but it seems to be builtin.there is no option in the bios to disable the hard drive.
View 8 Replies View RelatedI have been looking around and cant really find a guide on how to do this, I have found guides on how-to put a live CD on a usb flash drive, but this isnt want i want to doI want to use a high-end USB flash drive as a sort of SSD to put my boot partition on, I think if i do this it will decrease my boot time significantly. If it works i am going to take the back case off of my laptop and install the guts of the flash drive inside my laptop, i think the mod would be cool, i just dont know how to do it on the software side
View 6 Replies View RelatedI'm upgrading from a 250GB drive to a 500GB drive. I booted into the live-CD, ran gparted and created the necessary partitions:
/dev/sda1 ext4 /
/dev/sda2 swap
/dev/sda3 ext4 /home
then I used dd to transfer data from the old drive to the new drive. Now I am unable to boot into the new drive. I tried to boot again from the live-CD but fdisk reports that the drive has no partition table. I can still mount the devices (e.g. mount /dev/sda3 /mnt/sda3) and I can see all the files. But without a partition table, I can't set one partition to be bootable. Why doesn't gparted create a partition table? it created the filesystems just fine. how do I boot into the new disk? What do I have to do to make grub handle the new disk?
I've resisted the urge to post for as long as I could. I use these forums quite often in finding answers to the numerous linux questions that I've had & found it to be a great resource. For some reason after an innocent reboot of my Fedora 12 Core system, GRUB decided it would no longer load the O/S. I was just getting a flashing _ in the top left of the screen. I thought there must be a problem with the partition table & have used the systemRescueCd to run testdisk (I have made a copy of the disk first to an image file using dd - don't worry I made sure I got the commands around the correct way!).
testdisk shows that I have a partition which is bootable & Primary, which appears to be the grub partition (I can list the files in test disk). However when I search the disk I get the following after it has found a couple of partitions. (it is an 80Gb disk)

I posted this first to thread 'Boot problem - "Gave up waiting for root device.", (initramfs)' then realized that I should start a new thread because the problem is not the same. On boot the splash goes black and nothing happens, On a recovery boot it drops into shell BusyBox and messages indicate that the root partition cannot be found. After booting from CD Gparted GUI partition information shows no label or ssid for the root partition sda2. The data for the root partition appears to be there. how to fix this? My /home, swap, and / are on separate partitions formatted ext3. I have a recent backup only for my data. I would like to avoid having to rebuild my system from scratch.
View 9 Replies View RelatedI'd like the final layout to have a Windows partition (will start out as XP and will become Win7 when I can afford yet another copy), a partition for Ubuntu, and a shared Data partition that I can use for all my files between both OSs. I think this should be fairly straight forward with Linux on a Primary partition with / and swap. Only thing is, from what I've read (and yes I know this is a bit old school) it might be a good idea to put in a /Home partition so that I can reinstall new upgrades and maintain settings. But I don't want to max out my 4 primary partitions so I can use a 4th partition as a kind of sandbox for OS testing without using VirtualBox all the time.
This leaves me in need of some advice, I've never used Fdisk and I was planning on just using the Ubuntu installer to do all of this, but I don't know if I can create /Home as a logical partition in the main Ubuntu partition and still have the benefit of being able to reformat /root without losing /Home. I might have just confused myself, because no matter how many guides and How Tos I read I still don't really get extended partitions, I understand logical vs. primary but extended is...confusing. I need the Ubuntu partition to be bootable, so it needs to be a primary partition...I think. Unless I can have: /boot, /, swap, and /Home...
Also, if Ubuntu can read NTFS, and Win7 can read Ext3, what should a do with /Data? Or should I just go with FAT32 and be done with it. (It's a big HDD btw, 640 GB, so /Data will be fairly large)

Recently, I had to switch harddrives on one of my servers due to the need for hardware.
However, when I switched back to the original harddrive I got a surprise : Instead of booting normally in OpenSuse 11.3, it booted in the grub shell.
I did a root ( hd0,1) but when I attempted the setup cmd it failed. Thinking that I probably was a configuration error ( nothing was changed - the drive had spent some time in a nice anti static bag ) I booted using a USB key.
To my surprise I got a message stating that parted couldn't read the other partitions ( boot and swap ) and hence I would not be able to edit then. Fortunately, the data partition seemed OK so I can backup the data.
Preferbly, I would like to be able to restore my original system.
install fedora 11 on Vista I want to keep the windows boot loader and also install on a usb drive or a seperate partition that has 10GB free "install doesn't see partition's". Recently I installed ubuntu and had a major problem with booting, without having the usb drive connected I couldn't boot windows so uninstalled it. I'm trying to install now but install does'nt give me any option to select partitions from my drives one 320GB "portable, 3 partitions" and 80GB "main os 2 partitions one partition has 10GB free"
View 3 Replies View RelatedDuring attempted repair of damaged USB stick with fdisk and parted, an error appears to have changed the partition holding the /boot partition. At one point I possibly typed sda1 instead of sdb1 and appear to have lost my /boot partition.
This is on a HP Compaq Presario CQ50 228CA Portable running only Fedora (No multiboot).
I am able to reach most of the programs and data on the machine with the rescue mode from the F12 x86_64 DVD, chroot /mnt/sysimage command - so the main part of the system is still available. But when the machine starts up all I get is the 'grub:' prompt. In rescue mode I can cd /boot but there is nothing to list, and certainly there is no /boot/grub. fdisk /dev/sda1 p reports 255 heads 63 sectors/tracks 25 Cylinders Units=cylinders of 16065 x 512 = 8225280 Bytes Disk Identifier 0x0000000 - and then nothing under the headings Device, Boot, Start End etc...
Previously /boot was on /dev/sda1 a 194 m patition, with 39m used and 146m available (according to logwatch mail),
My questions:
Are there any commands in the grub program that would help my recovery - I doubt it, because grub is in place and running but I am not sure. Could I using fdisk recover the sda1 partition and it's contents? If so - how? If no, could I use the F12x86_64 to update and hence recover the /boot drive and retain the the LVM volumes both programs and content? If no, is my only option to reload F12 from the start, then rsync in my backup /home directory?
Since there had been a fair amount of customization done on the previous F11 which had been preupgraded to F12 I would prefer any option that would retain the customizations ...
Ive been running crunchbang on my system, and yesterday decided to try opensuse so i can install the novell client. I ran the live gnome cd and during installation I shrank my main partition down and created a new partition for opensuse. Installation went well other than sometimes programs close and make the part of my desktop that they occupied useless.
Question 1) I can see my crunch bang files through opensuse but i cannot find or boot into crunch bang.
question 2) Why are these programs closing and then killing my desktop? Say i have a Firefox in the top left of my desktop and it errors and closes. I go open Firefox again, anywhere that the old Firefox window was in ( not click able). My cursor will turn to the text cursor as soon as it enters the x y position. I have to restart the laptop to be able to click file or insert a web address.
I have built a small test server. I am planing on using this machine a an email and web server to test out its hosting capacities. in the future I will build a larger and more well equipped version.

2 160gb SATA drives (hardware raid 1, done through the Motherboard)

Like I said small test server. I am trying to install 10.04 server edition. When I get to the point of partitioning it asks me to activate the raid so I do. I get through the guided partitioning and get ready to write the file system to the drives and the screen goes red and says that it has failed. On a side note, this works if i install it on the same drives without any raid configuration.
Just installed 11.3 on my computer, however when I connect an external NTFS harddisk I receive an error message. When I open dolphin to connect to an internal NTFS partition I receive the message:

I am building a 10.04.1LTS server. I am putting the /root filesystem into a Software RAID1 partition. I want to keeo my /boot partition outside of RAID.Is there a way to have a boot partition on both sda and sdb so if one drive fails the second boot partition will work away - or should this be kept in with RAID also.

I lost windows completely and lost all my data in all 4 drives including drives itself.I searched in internet and forums as how could I recover my data, and got solution to use test disk. Testdisk worked perfectly, I recovered my 4 drives and retrieved data for 2 of my drives. But I still cann't retrive my important data from other drives.I guess data still exists in hard disk. (no free space , and no data)I know there could be several threads which had solved this kind of problem.
View 5 Replies View RelatedI just installed Fedora on my pc with windows XP pre-installed (dual boot). I had the same setup with ubuntu before with no problems. My ntfs windows partition is of 15 gb approximately and the remaining space that was available for fedora was about 220 GB (non partitioned - I removed all the partitions excepting the windows one using gparted from liveCD prior to beginning installation) ..........after installation etc etc.....my home folder shows me only 150GB of space.....what's happening? Where has all the remaining space gone to?
View 8 Replies View RelatedAfter having tested Ubuttu 9.10 on a VM with Win XP Pro as host and running both Ubuntu 9.10 and 8.04 from a CD/CDR drive I decided to do an installation of 8.04 on a separate HD and import files.Installation seemed to work OK, but on reboot: no menu was shown to choose OS and the machine booted directly into Windows.Tried to boot directly from the "Ubuntu" HD in the BIOS boot menu and get the message "MBR error" full stop literally.The Ubuntu hard drive is no longer recognised in Windows , can't be acessed from the DOS prompt and obviously cannot be reformatted from there.Just for the record, I'm not totally excluding operator error from the cause

View 1 Replies View RelatedI have a triple boot system running Ubuntu, WinXP, and Win7.I had Ubuntu running fine on its own partition (sda1) but an upgrade from Karmic to Lucid turned it into a dog.So I tar-ed my /home filesystem, split sda1 into 2 new extended partitions, then did a clean install of Lucid with / on sda5, and /home on sda6.I should also mention that I have already tried re-installing Grub from a live USB to no avail.
View 7 Replies View RelatedI was happily running 10.04--- really worked fantastically! Then, I updated all, and upgraded to 10.10 using the upgrade manager in Ubuntu Desktop. Now, when I choose Ubuntu from the boot page, the computer shuts down--- no errors, it just reboots and I get right back to the boot page. I cannot boot into Ubuntu at all, and I am now stuck with Windows 7 once again.
View 5 Replies View RelatedI'm having a few problems getting my system to boot after upgrading to 11.04.This problem actually first arose when I upgraded from 9.10 to 10.04 a couple of weeks ago, however I found I was able to boot by loading a selecting a previous kernel version (2.6.31.22 was the latest version I could successful boot from) and as I was a bit busy with exams at the time I decided to leave it be temporarily as I at least had a functioning system.I upgraded from 10.04 to 10.10 and then finally to 11.04 today. The original problem persisted on the upgrade to 10.10 however I was at that point still able to boot using the older kernel version. On the restart after the upgrade to 11.04 however, the system now freezes when trying to boot from 2.6.31.22 or previous versions (the splash screen shows and then the system gets stuck on a blank screen with just a cursor visible, but remains responsive to mouse (cursor moves) and keyboard (goes into restart process on Ctrl-Alt-Del)).
I'm at a bit of a loss of what to do and would be massively grateful if anyone had any advice of where to start for a solution. I can access the system using a LiveCD - the output of the boot info script is attached.
I got ubuntu 10.04 lucid lynx along with windows (dual boot) and using Grub. On my computer, I have my C:/ (programs) and D:/ (data). I've never used my D:/ before that day that I've lost my windows partition on my grub menu. I usually use my D:/ with windows. The first time I used my D:/ to store data with linux, I lost my windows option in my grub menu. I'm not sure what I did wrong but I do want to restore my windows option in my grub menu.
After "fdisk -l",
I checked in /boot/grub and there is no menu.lst to modify. how I can get back my windows option in my grub menu ?
When I install either desktop version of Ubuntu 9.10 or Xubantu 9.10 it boots ok when ask to reboot at the end of the install, but will not reboot after that (2nd attempt and all after fail)On 2nd and later attempts the grub menu comes up and I choose default Ubantu and the Ubuntu circle logo displays for about 30 seconds, and most of time I see it try to access my floppy drive (sometimes the floppy drive light stays on, sometimes it does not) a cursor then blinks in the upper left hand corner for about 10 seconds and then the screen goes blank and freezes there until I power down.

Note: Xubantu installs OK to HD on another system I have, but not on this Dell. To test the Dell I did install Puppy Linux with default grub loader to HD ant it works OK (boots OK to HD each time).Side note: At first I tried this Dell to set up dual boot with XP and Ubantu and same symptoms Ubantu only booting OK once and then never again so I thought it was dual boot issue so I deleted all partions (XP is now gone) with latest GParted version and attempted installing Ubuntu 9.10 and then Xubanto 9.10 on the whole harddrive but still no boot past the first time I though this might not be a grub issue since it seems to get past grub and the Ubantu circle shows for about 30 seconds before the system freezes. only a guess on my part as I don't know enough about Grub or Ubuntu to troubleshoot without help. I see I can hit "e" to get to the grub editor and I looked at the grub boot code but don't enough about it to edit for a fix. I thought about Lilo but did not see an option on the normal Xbuntu ,or even when I used the alternate install CD,for a Lilo option. Also note I can run the live CDs for Ubuntu and Xubuntu OK on this Dell. Only HD install gives me problems.
After performing the periodic update on 2010-05-26 including libc, libc6 and libgtk2.0 my system fails on boot with the following error message:
