Ubuntu Installation :: Unable To Boot Into New Drive - No Partition Table

I'm upgrading from a 250GB drive to a 500GB drive. I booted into the live-CD, ran gparted and created the necessary partitions:
/dev/sda1 ext4 /
/dev/sda2 swap
/dev/sda3 ext4 /home
then I used dd to transfer data from the old drive to the new drive. Now I am unable to boot into the new drive. I tried to boot again from the live-CD but fdisk reports that the drive has no partition table. I can still mount the devices (e.g. mount /dev/sda3 /mnt/sda3) and I can see all the files. But without a partition table, I can't set one partition to be bootable. Why doesn't gparted create a partition table? it created the filesystems just fine. how do I boot into the new disk? What do I have to do to make grub handle the new disk?

I'm trying to install Ubuntu Linux 10.04 on my computer with following specs:
ASUS P5KR Mobo
HIS 2600XT GFX
160 GB Hitachi Harddisk (SATA)
500 GB Hitachi Harddisk (SATA) - Only for Data.
The 160 GB Harddisk is currently split into 3 main partitions: i) 200 MB created by Win7 setup.
1) Windows 7
2) Leopard OSX
3) Partition formatted in Leopard as Journal which is empty, meaning I can convert this if I want and onto which I will install Ubuntu.
My problem is that despite booting up fine, installer starting and working fine, it cannot however detect my partition table, it thinks its unallocated.
The funny thing is that I can mount the partitions and view the data but the installer however can't see it.

I'm trying to install Ubuntu Netbook Edition 10.10 on my Eee PC 1015PE. but it appears that GParted which is used to partition the HDD is unable to successfully display partition table, it just shows that /dev/sda is all unallocated, and it offers just to create new partition table.

I have a 6TB external eSata bay (Lacie BigQuadra). I made a GPT table with only one big ext4 partition. All was ok. I resized the ext4 partition and I created a 1TB NTFS partition. I can use it on Kubuntu but Windows 7 tell me the partition is not formated. When I go back to Kubuntu, parted tell me that the secondary GPT table is not at the end of the disk and tell me it's probably an other OS that thinks the disk is smaller that its real size. It seems Windows 7 thinks the disk size is 2 TB (and modify automaticaly the GPT table and create a secondary GPT table on the middle of the disk).
What can I do to make my NTFS partition visible in Windows 7? What can I do to prevent Windows 7 to move the secondary partition table on the middle of the disk and to modify the primary GPT table ?

I have tried to automate the configuration of a usb drive with not much success.
The problem that I have is that I have a large amount of usb drives that have a partition table of type "loop" and I need to change them to "msdos". The size of the drives vary and I need to use FAT32 or FAT16 file system.
I've tried various partitioning commands and gui applications but cant find one that I can give a one line command to to set the partition table, maximum partition size and file system.

Everything is installed and setup on my system, but when I setup my partitions I chose my Windows partition to be bootable. Can I just use cfdisk to toggle the bootable flag so my linux partition is bootable and rewrite the partition table?

I have an external USB drive, with GPT partition label. The drive is cut up into two ~1.5TB partitions When I plug this into my CentOS 5.5 box, the drive is not detected. Instead, dmesg gives me this:

My friend gave me a flash drive with some important files on it that one day didn't work with his windows box. Upon plugging in the thumb drive, Windows gives a "you must format this disk before it can be used" message. I tried running a data recovery program (Easeus) on it but didn't have great results- only recovered some .wav files, a few .avi files and a .exe- none of which were very important, so I figure'd I'd try to mount it in Linux and possibly see the rest of the filesystem. The thumbdrive is a 2GB Lexar JD Firefly I plugged in the thumb drive and it is picked up by the system, but I can't access it. Here is the output of lsusb

GParted tells me my hard drive is not partitioned and has an unrecognised partition table, but I know it has because i'm using it now to write this on here, and fdisk shows the following:

Are there plans to alter or improve our partition options surrounding the change from 512 to 4096 byte sectors? It seems that the DOS-world of four primary partitions is a bit screwy in a world of tera-byte drives.

i have a laptop with windows 7 and its 64 bit and its got 1 had drive which is 300gb and i got 250gb of free space so when i try to partion it i partion my drive. i right click my hard drive which has 280gb free space and click on shrink and then selcte 20gb then go to unaclocated space and then click new voloume then i click next a couple of times and then i get this eppro.

I have an unallocated space at the end of my hdd, which is about 10 gb. I installed Pardus on that space, but then deleted the partition to install something else (I know I did not have to delete it, I could simply install the new thing over it), i dont remember exactly how, but it was from my Debian System, not from a LiveCD.Now, I am unable to use that space. GParted gives an error and says:Warning: the kernel failed to re-read the partition tableon /dev/sda (Device or resource nusy). As a result, it may not reflect all of your changes until after reboot.

I have a 4gb SDHC card that has been partitioned with an ext2, linux swap, and fat 32 partition that I use in an Android phone. After I partitioned it this way, which I have done more than once with no problems, it quit mounting or being recognized by Android, Linux, or Windows. Windows can tell there is something there but can't mount it, Debian and Android just say it's not there. I need to try to fix the partition table which gparted told me was corrupt the last time gparted could see it.

When I start gparted, to see if I can add extra harddisk where all my data is, I get the next error:

The kernel was unable to re-read the partition table on /dev/sda (Device or resource busy). This means Linux won't know anything about the modifications you made until you reboot. You should reboot your computer before doing anything with /dev/sda. I can start fedora 12 x64 amd whitout any problem. My partition layout on a single disk (80 gb sata maxtor) for the system is:

When I try to mount one of the extra disks (samsung spinpoint 1 tb, I have 4) I get to next error:

mount: you must specify the filesystem type
If I add the option with the filesystem I get:

mount: special device /dev/sdb1 does not exist
In gparted, when I select just a flag option, and deselect, press ok, the disk is forced to be reread by the program. After that I can also mount it. When I use any of the programs linked in this post, I am able to mount the disks whitout any problem. Except after a reboot, I get the same problem. SO whit each reboot, or poweroff, I need to do a re-read of the disks. The system is fedora 12 x64 for amd, installed from a live cd, the rest whit yums groupinstall, the latest kernel.

After installing karmic with Grub2 I am unable to boot into Archlinux partition. Grub2 has removed the last line of the Archlinux boot stanza! It used to read:-

Following the Grub2 tutorials I have tried editing /etc/grub.d/40_custom as follows:-

But no luck. Only way into Archlinux is to get into the edit shell and manually add the missing line and remove other stuff not needed. I have spent hours trying to resolve this issue and I am fairly p----d off

I have been looking around and cant really find a guide on how to do this, I have found guides on how-to put a live CD on a usb flash drive, but this isnt want i want to doI want to use a high-end USB flash drive as a sort of SSD to put my boot partition on, I think if i do this it will decrease my boot time significantly. If it works i am going to take the back case off of my laptop and install the guts of the flash drive inside my laptop, i think the mod would be cool, i just dont know how to do it on the software side

Im running ubuntu 10.10 on a dual boot machine together with vista. When I tried to delete a partition in gparted I accidentaly deleted the general partition table so I had to run testdisk on a live cd to restore it. The problem is that once I had done that and rebooted I get the message bootmgr is missing. I suppose Testdisk deleted or overwrote mz grubloader.

Caused by Used fdisk to delete the windows partition, in my dual boot. Then I could no longer log in to ubuntu, the partition table was some how courpt and I couldnt remount I then decided to use the windows partitioner from windows setup, as I thought it is so stupid, to reformat the partition where I had ubuntu. I wanted reinstall ubuntu, and I know that during the setup I could straighten out the mess I'd made.
Windows has now installed two 8mb one cylinder partitions on my HD. When I start the PC I get a !disk error occurred Press Crlt Alt Del to restart! This happens everytime. HD boot sequence is buggered, i guess.
I can boot from other devices. USB + CD. How when I use the windows disk to boot up I can see the 2 8mb partition, which it wont let me delete. How can I delete this via linux?
Also when I try to install ubuntu from the usb drive, it stalls just after the Preparing to install part. The next screen is when you set the partition table, swap drive etc. When I quit I get the following error !Process Glib WARNING getpuuid_r() failed due to unknown id!
The usb_liveCD does however mount my hard disk partitions and luckily I have managed to back everything up to an external.

We had a drive failure on /dev/sda. Everything 'except' boot was on raid5 across sda, sdb, sdc, sdd. I know how to repartition a new drive and rebuild the raid etc, but I don't know how to regenerate the files that reside on the boot partition. I really don't want to re-install as we have lot of custom code and software that may depend on our current libraries and build environment.

I have searched and didnt find a situation like mine so i thought id ask. i have a dual boot setup on my hp pavillion windows vista /dev/sda1 and backtrack linux 3,while trying to install backtrack 4 (which is ubuntu based) i deleted the former partitons for bt3. im not quite sure what i clicked but using the ubiquity installer it deleted my partition table so now my entire drive is listed as unallocated space. i have some very important files on my windows partition other wise i would just format and start over. how can i restore the partition table and boot to windows to atleast grab the important stuff. the drive hasnt been formatted so the info is still there i just cant get to it anyone have any ideas?

I have had a problem whilst trying to rewrite the MBR on a NTFS-only harddisk which has one partition.
I'm wondering if I can do anything to fix the problem from my ubuntu CD which gives me access to a shell - using the trial/demo mode.
The problem is that I can't boot into WinXP since using the XP boot cd to go into recovery mode and typing in 'fixmbr DeviceHarddisk0Partition1'.
All I get is the message code...
Thought perhaps there may be a way to restore the missing signature or something, from ubuntu.

I'm trying to install Ubuntu Netbook 10.10 to an Asus EeePC 1000H (160GB HDD). (I know it will be slow because of Mutter/i945). The usb stick boots just fine but when it comes to the partition part it goes wrong.
I have 3 partitions:Windows 7 (50GB)
This will be Ubuntu Netbook (50GB)
DATA (60GB)
But the partition manager just shows 160GB of unallocated space. I have tried to reboot and create the partitions with other software (even with GParted LiveCD) but the result is the same.

I had a little mission this week-end = my girlfriends 250Gb SATA hard drive laptop crashed this week (video card failure), and I wanted to help her by getting all her valuable data on an old Pachard Bell EasyNote laptop I have hanging around.One big problem : this laptop does not boot on CD drive, nor USB drive, and does not have a Floppy slot. There is an old hard drive with a lot of bad sectors in it, and I have a 80Gb IDE drive I want to put in.
My tools : a SATA to USB adapter, a IDE to USB adapter, a Ubuntu 9.10 LiveCD, a Windows7-run netbook, and the web.My goal : to configure the hard drive in some sort for it to install Ubuntu on boot (much like when you buy a laptop : the OS installs on first boot).I quickly found this to be impossible, as there is no Ubuntu pre-install format available (or that I found). So the next step was to get a complete install on the new hard drive, one way or another.First I tried cloning the 250SATA drive on the 80GB IDE drive, but this clearly led to an error (Grub error 18. It was looking for a 250Gb drive where I only fed him 80.)
Next step was to get some kind of LiveCD-like boot from the hard drive. This is made possible by using the UNetBootIn tool and the related Ubuntu Documentation. I met some problems during the real Ubuntu Install at the point where the laptop tried to format the drive the CD image was on. This other Ubuntu Guide gives a few workarounds and tweaks for that situation, but they didn't solve the issue for me.Final idea was to Live-CD like boot from the rubbish hard drive and install the system on the new hard drive plugged in through USB. This failed because the computer does not boot LiveCD-like on the old hard drive...
I'm kinda stuck on what to do now. I still don't have a nice boot on the computer (only a Live-CD like obtained with the UNetBootIn tool), and am still not capable of doing a "real" install on the Laptop.I'm aware that solving the boot-from-cd issue would bring me a faster solution (maybe!), but the idea was to get a hang on this so that I can install Ubuntu on my CD-free netbook soon (Although my netbook might very well boot on USB, but still).My final and last idea is to go buy some kind of adapter that would let me plug the two hard drives into the laptop at the same time, LiveCD-like boot on the new one, install Ubuntu on the old one (connected directly via IDE) and then clone the old one to the new one. But I wish I don't have to go to that extreme ;o)Writing this I just thought of one thing : I could install Live-CD like Ubuntu on a flash drive, launch it on my netbook and install Ubuntu on the new hard drive connected through USB... Would that work?

So here is my situation: I am unable to boot from a CD I am unable to boot from a Flash Drive I have Ubuntu installed with Wubi, and can boot into it successfully I have a Ubuntu Installation CD I have created a partition into which I'd like to install Ubuntu. Is it possible to boot into my current Wubi Ubuntu installation, and then launch the Ubuntu installer from the installation CD, and then direct this installation to the empty partition I have waiting?
Basically, I think my question is this: Does anybody know what file to run manually from the CD in order to launch the installer?

I am trying to install ubuntu 11.04 from a bootable USB flash drive. As i couldnt create the USB using the inbuilt usb creator which came with the .iso file i had downloaded, i had used universal USB installer to create it. It took a lot of time to created the bootable pendrive.
I had copied the contents of the pendrive thus created to a folder on my hard disk and named it 'PENDRIVE'. Later i had formatted the pendrive and used it for other purposes.
Today, i wanted to install ubuntu on another computer, so i copied the contents of this folder to my pendrive (instead of creating a bootable usb drive using universal USB installer again) and renamed my pendrive as 'PENDRIVE'. But when i tried to boot from it (i had changed the boot order of my computer accordingly) i got this message, 'remove any removable cd or media and press any button to restart'. Until i removed the pendrive my system refused to start and i was unable to install ubuntu. Why did this happen?

This is maybe the 15th time I've installed an Ubuntu OS in the past two years, and it's the first time I've really been stuck.Not long ago I installed 10.10, with no problems, but a couple days ago I did a fresh install of windows 7, and I planned to re-install ubuntu 10.10 alongside it.Before I installed windows, I created a partition on my 320gb HD, half and half, but while doing this I noticed that gparted would crash if a USB key was plugged in. I mention this because I'm convinced this is related to the problem.
After having installed windows, I went and created a bootable usb key with 10.10 using unetbootin (which I've used once before, but along time ago). I'm unable to make an actual live CD because my disk drive has been broken for the past year - a fact that has never stopped me from installing different distros with a usb key.So the installer starts as usual, but after the 2nd (or 3rd) step (where it says "for best results, make sure that your computer is plugged in, that you have an internet connection, and at least [...] of free space), I click forward, and the little wheel just spins forever,it never advances.I tried everything again with 10.04.1 and I got the same thing, this time after choosing my keyboard layout.
When I simply go to the live distro and then go to install, I see that at that moment, there's a crash report, something about gparted, which I'm assuming is a built-in part of the next step.
To sum up
-gparted doesn't seem to like USB keys
-installer won't advance to partition table
-can't use a disk because drive is broken!
My computer is an Acer Aspire 4530, AMD64. The 10.10 and the 10.04.1 installations were both 64bit.

just installed Fedora 15 on my system alongside Ubuntu 10.10 on My 500 GB hard disk.However on starting the computer the Fedora 15 partition gets loaded automatically. How do I access
my Ubuntu 10.10 partiion? I want to have a choice at start-up which OS to use. On my previous computer when I used to have Windows and Ubuntu,a menu used to appear asking which operating system to load.

I recently downloaded Ubuntu 10.10 and installed it onto a 250gb removable disk using a 240gb ext4 partition and a 10gb swap space.
I am using a Sony VAIO (VPCF115FM) and it would appear that my BIOS is very limited as to bootup options. I can only choose internal HDD/external device/network/CD Drive. I cannot check whether or not my BIOS is able to recognize the external ext4 (but from experiences so far it would seem that it cannot)
After much tinkering i got my internal windows 7 to recognize the drive as ext3 (Used ext2 volume manager to add a registry entry for the drive). However, I need to unplug and replug in the drive for it to be recognized, if i leave it plugged in from booting it shows up as unrecognized.
Summary: I would like to be able to boot up Ubuntu off this external drive, but as of now it would appear that my BIOS is unable to recognize the drive. Windows can recognize it as ext3, and I can access contents of the ubuntu partition from windows.
how I could get this working that would be fantastic, i've tried formatting the drive to other filesystems (ext3,ext2,XFS) but none of them would work either, so any information would be sweet
