Ubuntu Installation :: Shutdown/Power Icon On Far Right Top Panel Disappeared?
Apr 3, 2011
After a recent upgrade, the red power icon in the far right of the upper panel disappeared. In its place is a half obscured copy of my user name, which appears right next to my user name (along with the chat icon). The chat icon/user name is functional, as it is supposed to be, but the half obscured user name that replaced my shutdown/restart power icon is just a bug, and has no function. Not only is it unsightly, but I miss the power icon. Yes, I can right-click on the panel and add one, but it doesn't allow me to drag it all the way to the far upper-right corner, where it is supposed to be located... I found this post in another thread: sudo apt-get install indicator-applet-session, but it did nothing to solve my problem.. I'm running 64-bit 10.10, btw, if that makes any difference.

somehow I right clicked on the panel at the top and then left clicked on something that made the panel disappear permenantly. now when I turn the computer on it goes to the login screen, I put in my password and the desktop has no panel bar across the top of the screen (no way to even run a program) to turn in off I have to push the power button. how do I get my panel back? standard ubuntu 10.04 64 bit not server.

After a recent upgrade I have lost the top right icon in the top panel - so I cannot Set Status, Lock Screen, Guest Session, Switch User ..... Restart, Shutdown. I have right clicked on the top panel and installed the Shutdown icon so I can shutdown but I have lost all the other functions including the 60secs countdown. Is there any way I can get the standard top right icon in the top panel?

I did some maintenance and had to reinstall indicator applet on the panel. Now I'm missing the status applet (the one with the logged in username, and quick access to change chat status - power button to restart, shut down, hibernate...).
There's a way of getting it back? What package should I install again that maybe I missed?

I keep losing the normal icon top left in the top panel that gives options to power down/restart etc. Is this a know fault with 10.04 - I can get it back with a terminal command but it would be nice if it remained there all the time.

technically, this is UNR with lxde installed after extended UNR use. i like being able to hit my power button in gnome, and getting a message asking what you want to do, or cancel if needed. well, in lxde, the shutdown button brings up a similar message. could i map the power button to show that popup in lxde?

I have Ubuntu 10.10 on e-machine T-1221 I can shut down the machine using :
sudo shutdown -h from terminal
I can shutdown using powerbutton on case. I can't use the applet indicator powerbutton in root account, but, I can use the command under "System-->-Shutdown" in root account, but I don't see "System-->-Shutdown" in users account. Is there a way to add it ? I installed Debian 6.0 Squeeze on my Acer Aspire 3620 Laptop it works just fine and has the same Gnome Desktop. The only thing different is that there is no powerbutton available thru Gnome applets, only the command on menu under" Sytem-->-Shutdown", which I'm fine with on this machine.
These are the things I tried on emachine T-1221
I tried "acpi=force"
I tried "noacpi"
I tried "noacpi nolapic"
I read the bug reports it stated that on live-cd there was only suspend and hibernate. There is no shutdown or reboot. I tried: "#start acpi", it closed with errors. It said that Ubuntu uses upstart. Is there a script which you can add to power button to add the shutdown.? Really I don't necessarily need powerbutton, I think the work around would be adding the command to "System-->-Menu.

I've noticed recently that an error icon keeps appearing on my panel. When I mouse over it, it reads "The update information is outdated .This may be caused by network problems or by a repository that is no longer available. Please update manually by clicking on this icon and then selecting 'Check for updates' and check if some of the listed repositories fail.".I used the Update Manager to check for security patches. When I do so, there are a few sources that failed. How do I correct this error? I have already run "sudo apt-get update" but this doesn't solve the issue.I'm running Ubuntu 10.04 LTS by the way.

There has been a red circle icon with a big white bar through it in the notifications area of my panel for days now. The alt-text (is that what it's called for an icon?) says "A problem occurred when checking for the updates." When I click on the icon the update manager appears and "builds data structures" but says there are no updates available.

I'm running Fedora 11 with KDE desktop. Yesterday I installed several updates, including a kernel update. Now the Shutdown and Restart icons have disappeared from the Leave menu, which only contains the icons for "Logout", "Lock", "Switch User", "Suspend to Ram" and "Suspend to Disk". I had "Shutdown" and "Restart" icons in my Favorites menu, but when selected they open a "Logout" dialogue.
I can Shutdown and Restart from the command line, but would like to restore the capability to do it from the icons. Has anyone else experienced this and found a fix?

For some reason the shutdown/hibernate/logout options has disappeared from the Indicator session. I can still set my status in EmpathyI have tried reverting to gnome panel defaults (gconftool --recursive-unset /apps/panel && killall gnome-panel), removing and readding and I've checked synaptics and it seems I have everything indicator-related installed.

take it as read im still learning Ubuntu and occassionally do stupid things, like click on the unsubcribe buttons on unwanted email.
Did that and for some obscure reason i lost the default firefox icon from the top task bar. I could make a launcher on the desktop but i failed to find the firefox exe. I did get it to show hidden files, found the firefox folder but no exe file or similiar to launch.
Would someone be so kind as to tell me where to drill so i can at least put the firefox launcher on the desktop. As a fill in im using chromium, and i did find its folder hidden in firefox's.
ie... [username]/mozilla/firefox/chromium ??
