After updating my system to kernel 2.6.35-28 via the update manager my system now boots to a sever tty terminal and asks to log in. Once I log in and type start x at the prompt the system will load the sign in screen and all is well. I downloaded a boot info script from here

I installed 64 bit Lucid Lynx last week. There were some issues with the grub boot manager and my windows boot manager. However, about half the time i would boot to reach only a login prompt. If i used CTRL ALT DEL i would then reboot usually into the GUI.So now i only reach a login prompt all the time. How do i get the the GUI to run automatically?

The arrows don't work, they just put the arrow characters in the prompt. Everything else seems to be ok. Also, when I say logged in as User, I meant a new user I just created.

View 1 Replies View RelatedWe've set up a Red Hat Enterprise Linux 5 server and can log into it remotely just fine (with root and other users), but if I try to log in locally with a keyboard and monitor connected to the machine, I keep being returned to the login prompt. If a login is incorrect, I get an error message, but if it is correct then the screen just blanks and shows the login prompt again.While booting the only error message that comes up has to do with SNMPD, so I don't think it's related.
I read this post on the forum which seemed like a similar problem but it didn't help (I wasn't getting the "Module is unknown" message he was). I also read another post somewhere that said he was having the problem because the server was trying to use AD to authenticate, but I checked that and it's not the case with our server.From what I'm told (I didn't set up the server myself) it used to work fine, but then "something" happened one day that made it do this.
I just upgraded my desktop to 10.10. All seemed to go fine. The computer then prompted for a reboot, and on rebooting it boots to the shell prompt.

OS: Suse 11.2, installed from Linux Pro Magazine disc -- was running fine after formatted install (dumped Vista), been running it for a month.
Situation: Saturday, I went to an installfest for help getting my Pantech UM-175 USB aircard to work with my new laptop. One of the guys there got it running, and then we downloaded all of the updates. Following download, I shut down the laptop and hit the road. I got home last night, booted the computer a little while ago, and it came up to a command prompt rather than KDE. I was able to log in on the command prompt.
Cold and warm reboots gave the same results, as did Failsafe boot. I am assuming that something in the updates cut off KDE from starting. We did several cold boots at the installfest and it was working fine after the modem install, but BEFORE downloading the updates.
1) How do I manually launch KDE?
2) How do I get KDE to autoload again?
3) Is there anyone in the Reno, Nevada area who is a Suse guru, or are there install fests near Reno?
I recently installed Kubuntu with the windows installer wubi. Everything has gone fine until today. When i turn on the pc i normally have a prompt to go to windows or kubuntu. I choose Kubuntu and it loads it up. But now it goes to a grub prompt and i have no idea how to fix this or get into Kubuntu.
Things i did before the last reboot that may have caused this.
I edited my swappiness to help speed things up at the advice of many websites.

I changed it from 60 to 10. I did this by adding the line "vm.swappiness=10" to the end of sysctl.conf
I noticed that there was a # or something at the beginning of every line in sysctl.conf and i did NOT add it to my line. This is my guess as to why i am having problems.
The other thing i did was some bug updates. Something was popping up down by the clock area and it was asking me to do some bug updates of some sort. I said yes.
Any idea on how i can fix this? As of now i cannot get into kubuntu at all. It just gives me a grub command prompt.
Since upgrading ubuntu boots to a prompt rather than logging into gnome. has anyone run into this? what can I do to fix this?

I just installed Fedora 12 on a laptop. I changed the default shell on the root account to /bin/tcsh and changed the runlevel to 3 and then rebooted. Now I can't login into the root account: it returns me immediately to the login prompt and I can't see any error message (the screen is cleared).Why is this happening?Can I boot into some sort of safe mode so I can undo my changes to the /etc/inittab and /etc/passwd file?I tried booting with a Live CD with the intention of mounting the filesystem and making the changes, but the new filesystem is a LVM and it won't let me mount it (or I don't know how to mount a Logical Volume).
View 3 Replies View RelatedI installed CentOS 5.4 in a Virtualbox instance using the text mode installer. The GUI installer crashes. I chose the "Server (GUI)" option when installing the system, but upon completion of the install, I'm presented with a text mode login screen. Logging in as root drops me to a shell in text mode as I would expect.
What exactly IS "Server (GUI)?" I was thinking it would be a stripped down X11 desktop.
The main role of the Virtualbox instance is to run a server stack that we run on other CentOS machines, but I want Eclipse and perhaps just a few other GUI tools on it, without all the kitchen-sink crap that (I assume, coming from the Ubuntu world) comes with a "Desktop" install.
I installed 10.04 clean on the PC.Not other operating system.It booted to Ubuntu fine after the install and all appeared to be working fine.Used the upgrade manager to install the upgrades to the basic system.I had not yet loaded in any non-ubuntu or medibuntu repositories so this was the first, basic upgrade.After the upgrade,I can no longer boot to Ubuntu but boot to a grub prompt instead.I presume this is a recover prompt. How do I "recover" and continue booting to Ubuntu?

I cannot login as a user using a web interface or client. Using the correct password, it takes a long time, then tells me that the login may be incorrect. With an incorrect password, it tells me this immediately.
I am able to login to the web admin interface, but the "System" tab will generate the following error after several minutes. code...
I have a Ubuntu 10.10 system that I haven't been using in a while. Upon turning it on, it boots to a stripped down login screen (not the usual nice one) with a warning about power configuration. View 2 Replies View RelatedI recently learned that you can upgrade your version without downloading and burning a cd. So I upgraded from 10.04 to 11.04 and now can not use my computer. It will boot up display the log in screen and I can log in. But when it loads up as soon as I try and do anything the computer will completely freeze. I am not really sure what is going on. I do have a somewhat older machine but I have above the minimum requirements to run 11.04 so I was wondering if anyone else has had this problem. Also I can easily boot into the 10.04 cd so I would like to know the path to back up all my documents and photos just in case I need to reinstall the older os.

I decided to dual boot install Ubuntu with my Windows 7. After a lot of hair pulling, i finally managed to boot the live cd environment with "nomodeset". From there i installed ubuntu. When it finished installing, i booted to the new ubuntu install only to be presented with a command line login. If i change the boot line from "quiet splash" to "nomodeset", i can coax ubuntu to boot in low graphics mode. However this is not a permanent fix, and doing so causes a 2 inch offest of the screen on the right hand side. Only the have the missing 2 inches appear on the left side. If from the "Ubuntu is running in low graphics mode" message, i select "console login", and type "startx" i just comes out with "X Server Fatal error- No Screens found". I also tried:

This is a cd that i got free from Canonical themselves. It's Ubuntu 10.04 LTS, and I have Intel Integrated Graphics.
Preface: I'm a relative neophyte when it comes to Linux anything. I was running Hardy in an attempt to learn. I recently decided to upgrade to Karmic. I liked the look of "Mint 8" (AKA Karmic).I've been running Mint nicely for about a week after a fresh install. Then.... something went spastic...
I went logged in as root and changed file permissions for my "/" folders. The change was simply making group "root" able to read and write files. Than was it. It carried out the change smoothly.
When I hit "Logout" from root, to return to my user account, the screen went white. Stuff flickered when I hit keys. I ended up having to hard boot to get it moving.
Now when I boot, Grub works, it boots to my desktop, graphics display appropriately, but NO mouse and NO keyboard. Dead system. Only thing I can do is hard boot.
I tried the recovery from Grub, no change. I have no idea where to begin. I go back and reinstall it again (3rd time). Sure glad I've kept my old W2K, or I'd be screwed.
PS - I booted the live Hardy CD to look at files. When partitions are mounted no files in "/" or "/home" can be seen.
I don't get a UI login prompt at startup and it makes a sound. I'm using 10.04, though this did happen to me in 9.0x as well. When I press ctrl-alt-F1, I login and sudo gdm stop and do sudo startx this seems to put me at root and there is an error with the applets and the panel does not load. "Killall gnome-panel" does not fix it.
If I simply do startx (w/o going to root), it goes to a black screen and if I press ctrl-alt-F1 it repeats "No protocol specified" until I get the error message xinit: Resource file temporary unavailable (errno 11): unable to connect to Xserver.
I managed to change the background by copying over a new image file to some directory. However, there is still the big boring login window. Is there any way to change that? I'd like something darker, and smaller. I copied over the image file to /usr/share/backgrounds/warty-final-ubuntu.png My image file was actually a jpeg file, but copying it over to /usr/share/backgrounds/warty-final-ubuntu.png posed no problems.

But in a perticular machine ubuntu HH, makes the screen garbled during installation and after installation at login prompt, but screen is just OK before the login prompt. This is happening in one machine and when i tried to load ubuntu 9 and fedora core in this machine, all goes fine (installation and use) means machine is reasonably ok. As I load edubuntu on HH, hence this ubuntu loading is important for me.

After some searching on the forums, it appears that this is because I set my laptop to auto-login. Am I missing something here, but what does auto-login have to do the the keyring? Why do I even need to enter that password? I understand that many Ubuntu users are picky about security, but why isn't their any option to disable this? It's almost as bad as UAC from Vista, which is one of the reasons I'm dual-booting Ubuntu in the first place. If it is necessary I could just change it so that it boots into a fullscreen terminal so that you would have to input "startx" and then username and password.
