Ubuntu has stopped booting correctly. Now it shows the Ubuntu logo and then, instead of GDM, it shows a console login prompt. How do I go about troubleshooting this?'m in Windows XP (which I like a lot better than Ubuntu, because it actually works) but all my files and work are on my Linux partition.

I have been using my system for couple of weeks, and normally update software when the icon is displayed on top bar (gnome). Last couple of days there were updates for X, and I am not sure whether that is the cause of my problem. Once bootup, I get the login screen. When enter the password the login screen keep coming back. there is no error about any password issue, or anything. It keeps prompt me to enter the password.
I could login back the following way.
1. ctrl + alt + F1 , and login with the same username/pwd as for X
2.change to root
3.pkill gdm3
4.exit from root to user privilege
5. startx
The system starts X correctly and no login screen is displayed. I could use the system as usual.
The only thing I did custom to my system was upgrading to the latest kernel (2.6.38) using the source. This was to get support for my hardware, but that was about a month ago. I do not see anything in /var/log (X, demesg etc).
I installed 64 bit Lucid Lynx last week. There were some issues with the grub boot manager and my windows boot manager. However, about half the time i would boot to reach only a login prompt. If i used CTRL ALT DEL i would then reboot usually into the GUI.So now i only reach a login prompt all the time. How do i get the the GUI to run automatically?

Once I log in and type start x at the prompt the system will load the sign in screen and all is well. I downloaded a boot info script from here

After upgrading to Ubuntu 9.10 I no longer get a login prompt when switching to console mode e.g. (CTRL+ALT)-F1. Instead i just get blinking cursor in the top left corner. Key strokes are printed the screen but otherwise nothing happens. I can switch back and forth between X and the console normally.
Where are the consoles configured, and is there a corresponding log somewhere i can check? Has anyone had similars problem?
My system is an old Amilo Pro laptop with a VIA 800 compatible chip-set.
I installed Ubuntu 10.10 on my 32gb flash drive. Just one large partition for the OS and about a gig for swap. Worked fine. Booted to USB on two computers and a laptop at home. Fine. Figured I'd try it on a work pc for the sake of testing a random computer. Well I stick the drive in, boot up, select usb from the boot menu and bam Ubuntu starts loading. I look away, it's cool ubuntu's loading. Well I turn back and it's a black screen. It's "<username>@whatever login:" or something close.
I use the username and password I created during installation and what I used to login to the computer like fifty million times while booted into Ubuntu. Well, invalid login. The first time I installed this OS on this drive I updated it through the update manager and rebooted. Next thing I know I type in my username and password, hit enter, and bam black screen, some stuff, then im asked to login again. Now after this next iteration I am faced with yet another faulty login screen. What is up with this OS?
I installed 2.6.38 from backports. It boots OK, and among the start-up messages it says it has started kdm, but then it offers only a console login prompt, no GUI. I assumed (perhaps optimistically?) that newer kernels would be backward-compatible, and that any dependencies on other software would be enforced by the package mechanisms. Running amd64, Squeeze, KDE.
View 6 Replies View RelatedI have had my computer set to dual boot Windows 7 for months now with no issue. Now today when I logged on to Slackware (13.1 x86_64) it suddenly stopped recognizing that my Windows 7 drive has anything on it. Fdisk cannot see any partitions anymore. Yet I can reboot the computer and run Windows 7 off it just fine. The windows drive should be /dev/sdb with sdb1 being its system reserved partition and sdb2 being the actual Windows partition.
Dmesg sees that it is there like my other drives, but it appears that the Windows 7 partition is not unaccessable to anything in Linux.
How could this work yesterday yet today it doesn't? I didn't change anything.
Usually I get a login prompt on Ctrl+Alt+F[1-6], but now I just see a blinking cursor in all of them, along with some boot messages in the first virtual terminal.

What's even weirder about this is that I uninstalled bootchart a few months ago. Whether that's related or not is beyond me, but the virtual terminals did stop working somewhere around that time. I solved this by reverting to my original /etc/network/interfaces file. Without the loopback "lo" device, the runlevel was never set, and virtual terminals never loaded.

Everytime I restart my PC and the login, Before the login window goes away a window pops up saying "Power Management has stopped working" If I click cancel nothing happens, if I click Logout Anyway then the window goes away and I continue to login. Whats up with that? I am using a Desktop.
View 3 Replies View RelatedFor some reason my bash autocomplete stopped working. I get the error when I try to cd into a directory, pressing <tab> for autocomplete:
cd A-sh: <( compgen -d -- 'A' ): No such file or directory
Autocomplete works for the root user and for the other user on the machine, just not logged in as this user. The .bashrc file looks fine to me, and I didn't make any changes to it to even cause the bash autocomplete to stop working (as far as I know).

I just upgraded my desktop to 10.10. All seemed to go fine. The computer then prompted for a reboot, and on rebooting it boots to the shell prompt.

OS: Suse 11.2, installed from Linux Pro Magazine disc -- was running fine after formatted install (dumped Vista), been running it for a month.
Situation: Saturday, I went to an installfest for help getting my Pantech UM-175 USB aircard to work with my new laptop. One of the guys there got it running, and then we downloaded all of the updates. Following download, I shut down the laptop and hit the road. I got home last night, booted the computer a little while ago, and it came up to a command prompt rather than KDE. I was able to log in on the command prompt.
Cold and warm reboots gave the same results, as did Failsafe boot. I am assuming that something in the updates cut off KDE from starting. We did several cold boots at the installfest and it was working fine after the modem install, but BEFORE downloading the updates.
1) How do I manually launch KDE?
2) How do I get KDE to autoload again?
3) Is there anyone in the Reno, Nevada area who is a Suse guru, or are there install fests near Reno?
I recently installed Kubuntu with the windows installer wubi. Everything has gone fine until today. When i turn on the pc i normally have a prompt to go to windows or kubuntu. I choose Kubuntu and it loads it up. But now it goes to a grub prompt and i have no idea how to fix this or get into Kubuntu.
Things i did before the last reboot that may have caused this.
I edited my swappiness to help speed things up at the advice of many websites.

I changed it from 60 to 10. I did this by adding the line "vm.swappiness=10" to the end of sysctl.conf
I noticed that there was a # or something at the beginning of every line in sysctl.conf and i did NOT add it to my line. This is my guess as to why i am having problems.
The other thing i did was some bug updates. Something was popping up down by the clock area and it was asking me to do some bug updates of some sort. I said yes.
Any idea on how i can fix this? As of now i cannot get into kubuntu at all. It just gives me a grub command prompt.
I've been using debian unstable for some months, and after some problems I've been having with the nvidia non-free drivers and pulseaudio, I decided to do a new fresh install. As in the first time, I used a netinst CD, and all went ok. The first three times it booted perfectly, with gnome and all the apps, without problems. I updated the system with the unstable repositories, and I went home (i was somewhere else).
When I got home (like an hour ago), my new debian OS boots, but it brings me to the console, instead of automatically logging me in normally, with the GUI and Gnome and everything. It asks for login and password, and then it's just the console, and if I type, for example, Iceweasel or vlc or any program, it tells me that there's no display or that the X window system is not available. What happens?
It worked just fine a few hours ago, ant I only updated my system...! Also, it booted normally a few times after upgrading, so it's quite strange. Also, before that, I tried to install Debian Testing from a CD ISO image, and I succeeded, but the same happened so I used the netinst image and it worked. But now it just won't work...
My partition system is now like this:

Since upgrading ubuntu boots to a prompt rather than logging into gnome. has anyone run into this? what can I do to fix this?

I have a VM based on SUSE 11.3 that boots into a console in run level 3. I am used GNOME so I am trying to get it installed but not having any success. I don't know a lot about the VM as I got it 2nd hand.
So far I have gone into YAST and installed gdm and all the dependencies. I have changed from Run level 3 to 5.
When I run startx I get

I have a question about the prompt. it is very easy to tune it for it to be colored and display path where you are etc. But my problem is that when the path is too long I would prefer the code line to be on the folowing line...

I've been administrating a dedicated Linux CentOS 5 (Linux 2.6.26.5-rootserver-20080917a) server for around 2 years, and although not a network or Linux expert, been learning to configure as need arises. Primarily using Plesk for day-to-day, but occasionally using Putty to SSH into server.
For all the time I've had the server, I've been connecting to my server via sFTP using "root" password. ( Although, I know this is really bad practice, I assume made safer by connecting with SSH FTP)
After spending another normal day in the office developing websites, connecting to my server as root using SFTP in Filezilla AND Dreamweaver I left for the night.
Returned next morning, after having done no manual updates or amends to my server; I could no longer SFTP into my server?
Thought it may be related to my office network, so tried it from home over the weekend, same result; can no longer connect SFTP for root?
I can connect to the server via Putty using my "root" username and password.
After spending hours looking on the internet for a solution, I'm lost for ideas as I didn't make any changes?
What happens when I open my Filezilla and try connecting as SFTP is it states:
Error:Connection timed out
Error:Could not connect to server
I checked server log /var/log/secure and it states:
Accepted password for root from UNKNOWN port 49212 ssh2
Apr 9 07:41:41 s15320264 sshd[7122]: fatal: Write failed: Connection reset by peer
Odd part is, it's worked fine for weeks, months without ever failing to connect?
Also, notice that Putty connection seems to take much longer to authenticate root user than it used to?
Checked via Plesk Health Monitoring and all CPU, Memory and Disk Levels are well below any alarm levels.
I have run all Plesk updates to 10.2.0 in the hope that it resolved it, but to no avail.
This is a problem regarding VxWorks. Sometimes i am not able to type anything in the command prompt of vxWorks console.

How to change the console login prompt settings in slackware 13.1 x64? I tried googling but couldnt find anything, maybe I dont know what it's called.. I mean when the system boot and boots into console asking login info, how to reset the console to new page/clear screen(clearing all the boot up info lines) before it prompts to login. Like for example if after logged into a tty I type exit, I want the screen to refresh(reset?) such that all screen info is cleared and only login prompt is shown on the top left of the screen, like in fedora shell prompt.
View 2 Replies View RelatedIs this a beta version or something? I installed this version because it came as a live cd coupled with emc2 for cnc machining. I cannot get anything to work correctly. I tried to install Mozilla thunderbird using the application manager and it is very slow. It takes forever for the menus to open. or emails and is virtually unusable. I tried to use the startup manager and it killed my grub bootloader so I needed to reinstall. I couldnt successfully use the grub2 console prompt to log back into linux even though I ollwed several tutorials for this. I tried to install the flash player plugin and it kept telling me still to install it before I could watch flash videos even though I had installed it 3 or 4 times. I just tried to install evolution mail and it cannot log into my gmail account. I tried to install swift dove which is a faster version of thunderbird and it says it is starting but then never does. I am reasonably sure I should hang in there as I have heard Ubuntu is very good as an os.

I just installed Fedora 12 on a laptop. I changed the default shell on the root account to /bin/tcsh and changed the runlevel to 3 and then rebooted. Now I can't login into the root account: it returns me immediately to the login prompt and I can't see any error message (the screen is cleared).Why is this happening?Can I boot into some sort of safe mode so I can undo my changes to the /etc/inittab and /etc/passwd file?I tried booting with a Live CD with the intention of mounting the filesystem and making the changes, but the new filesystem is a LVM and it won't let me mount it (or I don't know how to mount a Logical Volume).

I finally got my system to boot to a console prompt. This is a fresh installation of fc10 that I have struggled to get working with my old Adaptec 2940 scsi hardware. I am a little fuzzy on the whole gtk, gdm, gnome thing. So how do I go from this console prompt to configuring the new installation with desktop?So let's say I am logged on as root on the console.

I have a ATI Mobility Radeon X1400 card on ThinkPad T60. Everything was working on 8.10, and I decided to install 10.04 and now it doesnt work.
I am not able to login to server from console attached to server, every time i enter username & password but it again asks for username & password. But when i try to login to server from remote machine, login happens properly.
