I was trying to install Ubuntu 10.04 (desktop) on my old PC. But it keeps stopping after I selected keyboard(never leaves this screen).
What can I do? The PC is able to run XP, but I hoped that I could speed up things a bit by using Ubuntu.
I installed Ubuntu 10.04 LTS to dual boot with Win Xp and everything went fine with the installation untill I went to boot back into Windows. My keyboard fails to respond in the boot loader so I am stuck with the default setting of booting back into Linux. To be clear, the keyboard works when the BIOS loads, I can hit DEL and go to the BIOS menu, etc, it's only when I hit the boot loader. The keyboard also works fine in Linux and Windows.
View 2 Replies View RelatedI am attempting to install Fedora 11 on a Dell Windows Server 2003 computer from CD (I just want to override the Server PC with F11). I used this media in my class last night after testing it, so I know the media itself is good. We did have lots of issues getting the keyboard and mouse to work during the install attempts last night, too, but eventually it worked. Unfortunately, at home is a different story!
I boot from install Disk 1 and get to the first screen with the option of testing the media or skipping it and I only get one keystroke then nothing. F11 just hangs/stops/freezes/locks up. Reboots don't help and I attempted to install from the F11 DVD I made, too, but the machine completely wouldn't see that disk at all! The keyboard is connected directly to the computer via PS2. I don't have a USB keyboard laying around nor an adapter to try.
I would love to hook up my children with F11! I did manage to figure out what files to download, burn to disk and how to install F11 at school yesterday).
This laptop has been in the mainstream news as the cheapest Windows laptop available. Unfortunately it has a 64-bit CPU with 32-bit UEFI that dumps to the grub shell before installation. In addition, the built-in keyboard does not work.
As far as the dump to shell problem, this seems like something is not setup correctly in the grub UEFI configuration. This "hybrid" notebook should be using the multi-arch as I understand the situation. I noticed there is no grub configuration file in the multi-arch netinst ISO when I mounted it and looked around. I also noticed the standard netinst ISO is not easily mountable: there are errors when I try to mount the individual partitions to inspect the grub configuration. Additionally, Kubuntu boots perfectly aside from the keyboard issue. Devuan also boots when I modify the netinst to bypass gummiboot and use grub directly. Finally, the multi-arch grub shell freezes up when autocompleting and searching through the drives for the grub config, leading to a forced reboot. As an extra note, I tried 2 different flash drives and CD install media with the same results.
I tried many, many grub kernel combinations to fix the keyboard issue. It works in grub, but not in Linux. I was ultimately going to try a newer kernel to fix it.I was in a hurry to get something set up so back to the store it goes.

I'm upgrading a 7-year-old 64-bit Clevo/System76 laptop to jessie. My first run of `sudo aptitude full-upgrade` ended after fetching packages, with the following lines ending the console spew:

Only GUI application running was `gnome-terminal`, with the upgrade running in a single tab. This was working as intended, since I closed all other apps, and all but one `gnome-terminal` tab, before starting the upgrade. desktop environment (DE)=Cinnamon (also as intended) mouse was non-responsive: swiping the touchpad produced no movement keyboard appeared non-responsive (but more on that below) internal fan was running apparently full-speed (certainly as loud as I've ever heard it) console spew ended with the following 3 lines:

I left it running in hope the upgrade would recover, but after 7 hours nothing had changed, so I attempted to kill the job. The following all failed:
invoking shutdown via desktop menu (neither mouse movement nor pressing Super key produced any change) C-c/Ctrl-c in the terminal tab (nothing changed in the GUI) A-F2/Alt-F2 (trying to run another `gnome-terminal` to run `sudo shutdown -Ph now`, but no dialog appeared) C-A-F1 (to goto tty1 and run `sudo shutdown -Ph now`, but again no change in GUI/X)
The good news is, the box did reboot after `A-SysRq-[REISUB]`, though only to tty1. From there, `sudo dpkg --audit` produces these results.
So obviously the upgrade is incomplete; how best to resume it, or to debug the current situation before resuming? I'd prefer to fix the problem with `fancontrol` before proceeding, since the previous `full-upgrade` was quite long-running.
FWIW I also recorded the packages that the previous/broken `aptitude full-upgrade` wanted to {add, remove, upgrade}, and note that package=`fancontrol` is one that `aptitude` wanted to upgrade. So I'd like to know if I should just

I 've reinstalled XP partition on my ubuntu system 8.10 ,After that i reinstalled grub using live CD ubuntu 9.04

Just installed Ubuntu 9.10 and had windows 7 ultimate installed prior to installing Ubuntu. When I installed Ubuntu I partitioned off a section of the HDD that windows is installed on and installed to that new partition. Ubuntu boots and works great but ever since installed if I select windows to boot it just reboot PC all together. Tried making windows default and it booted windows once then went back to normal. I tried to follow suggestions on different post about running "sudo grub" but it is not a command according to my terminal.

I've been searching for and working on possible solutions for several days to no avail. There are some similar posts on various forums but few quite like mine, and solutions I've read haven't solved my problem. I tried booting to the windows 7 repair disk and selecting the repair start up option, but the message tells me no problems were found.
I've been trying to install Ubuntu Server on an old server since a couple of days and have been unsuccessful. I've google'd a bit but found no solid solution yet to this problem. Everything goes fine and I'm able to partition my SCSI drives and everything. After the installation starts unpacking and copying files this happens. So I got a new netbook (Samsung n150 dated 03/2011) it had ubuntu 10.10 installed but I already use ubuntu on my macbook so I'm trying out knoppix, I booted it from usb and ran the HD installer, it gets through all that and then installs grub ok, but when I reboot I get "Error 17: Cannot mount selected partition"
Things I already tried: Grub setup (grub, root (hd0,1), setup (hd0), quit) and every variation. *I tried removing the usb and setting the HDD back to first boot in the bios and then changing the menu.lst accordingly, still I get error 17. Below is the information just after boot with the usb still plugged in and set as first boot in bios.

I have installed Debian maybe 30 times over the years since about 2003, stable, testing and Sid on two different desktops and two different laptops. The only problem I have ever had is sometimes with a flaky daily build. It is one of my favorite distros.
BUT, I am totally frustrated is trying to install to a USB. I have followed the manual step by step about 6 times in the past two weeks. The result is always the same. The installation fails to find an installation iso image. Yes, I know the iso image and the hd-media vmlinuz and initrd.gz files are supposed to be the same version.

The USB boots to a Language selection screen and proceeds through the Keyboard selection screen with no problems.
The next step which searches for an installation iso image fails.

Searching the entire PC for an installation iso image also fails. (I even copied the netinst iso image to the HD root directory.)
Which linux distros are set up to allow me to type a keyboard shortcut to read selected text aloud? Or allows TTS to read from the clipboard, as long as it watches the clipboard and starts to read when clipboard is updated.
View 1 Replies View RelatedI installed the 64-bit version of Debian Squeeze yesterday and noticed when exiting either the XFCE or LXDE desktops by selecting Restart or Reboot, the computer does not reboot back to the BIOS and GRUB, it simply reloads Linux without rebooting the hardware - no warm boot. XFCE and LXDE are the only desktop environments installed.
The 32-bit version of Debian installed on other computers, correctly reboots the hardware when the same option is selected.
Is there a file I could look at (or perhaps add a particular boot parameter) that will force a proper reboot of the hardware when that option is selected, or is that how the 64-bit version is designed to work?
I am having problems with grub. Originally I was having trouble installing Service Pack 2 for vista and I made the fool's mistake of changing the active partition in disk management from the boot partition to the windows partition. This blew up grub. After restarting I was dumped at the grub terminal i.e.

so I thought okay, I will just reinstall grub. I ran setup (hdx,y) but now when I restart first of all the splash screen is different, rather then the blue background with the big words in white, fedora 11, it's black and I get a error saying unable to read any images. I can see the different OS' I have on the grub screen but attempting to load any of them gives me
error 17 cannot mount selected partition.
I am currently running the Fedora 11 xfce spin live cd. From the terminal here, here is some information. sda3 is my fedora 11 partition I am not sure maybe it is because of ext4 but I can't seem to mount it using mount /dev/sda3 /mnt/xxxxx.

From what I can figure out, grub can not figure out which disk has my root file system. I checked the partition labels and they match the UUID that are in my fstab.
Plan to use GRUB for multiple booting to select the OS but only with luck have I got it partially to work. Windows 98 and Puppy 431 O.K on first HDD but Puppy 421 on second HDD /dev/sdb1 stops at error 21.
View 6 Replies View RelatedI have a Dell VOSTRO laptop that I use for windows Vista. I have an old disk drive that I put into a USB case and now I want to use that for a Debian system. I do not want to install grub on my laptops HDD, if I do I need to have the USB HDD plugged in everytime I boot and i find that a real pain. I installed Debian on the USB drive with no problem and when it asked where I wanted to install GRUB I picked the USB drive ( I think ). Now when I interupt the boot and tell it to boot from the USB drive grub comes up with the correct menu but when I pick Debian I get the following messages:

First, installed Ubuntu 10.4 on the entire disk (40GiB of size). Then, shrink the Ubuntu installation to equal size to free up space for fedora.
Second, installed Fedora 13 using the option "Use free space on selected drives and create default layout". After the successful installation fdisk -l shows,

I have the same problem with an Ubuntu 10.04 live CD. Whenever I attempt to boot (Lu|U)buntu from a live CD/USB, on most computers. it works just fine. However, on two computers, the live media starts off just fine with the main menu (Try Ubuntu without installing, etc.), then, when I select any option except 'Boot from First Hard Disk', after a few seconds, the CD stops spinning or the USB loses power. I'm convinced it's not a problem from the media, since it works perfectly fine on some computers.

I just downloaded the Fedora 10 cd yesterday and decided to install it. I had a partition for Fedora on my system before but I'm not really sure what I did to it. It wasn't booting and it has been so long since I messed with it I just decided to reinstall with the latest (I think I was running F9 previously). So I pop in the live CD, run the install, and then reboot into Ubuntu. I modified my menu.lst to include the new vmlinuz and initrd versions, as well as the new UUID of the partition. Now when I reboot and choose Fedora from grub's menu I get this error:

According to their BIOS page the first release of this was late November 2008. Yes they have had 2 updates since then but it looks like those only serve to support AM3 CPUs (which I don't have) or update some audio playback issues. I seriously doubt I need to update my BIOS to get this to work.

I can get Slackware 12.1 to boot (though it kernel panics during startup...not sure what I did to make it angry), but grub immediately fails when I attempt to boot Fedora. Here's the entry from menu.lst:

I have verified that the vmlinuz and initrd are both correct. I put the UUID in there after running vol_id so I'm sure the entry is solid. I have tried making it "root=/dev/sdb1" which failed with the same error, and I even tried copying the fc10 vmlinuz and initrd files over to my Ubuntu partition (which controls grub) but for some odd reason the cp command takes a really long time and then I eventually get this weird error for initrd:

I got the same error with the dd command too. So I was going to just try and copy the files to my sdb3 partition and then modify the menu.lst entry appropriately but that doesn't seem to be plausible at this point.
I have a motherboard that was just released about 4 months ago, an Athlon X2 6000+ CPU, and 4gigs of RAM. The drives are both SATA 300 drives...it's not like this is some old Pentium Pro and the BIOS just doesn't support large drives...this is a brand new system with a very recent BIOS version.
I have successfully quadruple booted all of these in the past, but that may have been prior to the new motherboard. So that makes me think it could be something related to the motherboard but the thing is so much newer than what I previously had, certainly that can't be the problem...can it? Then I remember that Slackware boots, so if it's truly something about how the BIOS can't access some file beyond a particular section of the disk, then it doesn't make any sense that it can book slackware. Fedora is the first partition, Slackware is the last and is like 200+ GB into the disk.
I tried to install 64bit 10.04 Release Candidate but it fails every time. I have been using 64bit 9.10 Karmic on this computer so it's suitable for installation.
I tried to install from USB stick and from CD but same error at the same point! It fails just befere it starts to ask your locations etc...
There must be something totally wrong on installer. Checksums are ok etc...

I recently decided to install ubuntu netbook remix 10.10 to my Toshiba NB200. I was using windows and I wanted to completely erase them. I burned the USB, I followed every single instruction the site had, and even though the installation seemed to work, and a message to reboot my computer appeared at the end, the installation finally fails. When I reboot, the only thing I get is a black screen with an underscore at the top left corner. I tried the installation four to six times and even tried older versions as well but all I get is the black screen.

However, when starting up the computer with the CD in the drive, the installer fails to load, showing only a picture at the bottom of the screen showing a square and a circle with a person in it... This persists for as long as I have cared to wait (hours) and pressing keys at first results in nothing, then after sufficient key presses just produces beeps...
Anyone know what's wrong there?
10.10 installation fails: not paritition nor hard drive visible, Gparted does not start: trying to install 10.10 as a 2nd boot to windows Xp MCE installation. all get a RAID1
/home is encrypted with passphrase (Twofish 256, cbc-essiv:sha256)
swap is encrypted with random (Blowfish 128, cbc-essiv:sha256)
where can i check RAID and hardware compatibility?
I had a problem with the install of Ubuntu 10.04 and 10.04.1 on a Dell Precision T3500. I used the 32bit live CD. I let the installer create the file systems and use the whole disc. The disc is was created as shown below. After the install button was pressed, the root file system was created and then the swap. When the installer went to mount the swap it complained there was not enough memory and failed the installation. I installed Ubuntu by manually making the swap file system smaller using gparted and assigning the / and swap to the file systems created by gparted.

I installed Ubuntu 10.10 amd64 (and tried 10.04.2 as well) from Wubi under Windows 7 64-bit. When I reboot after installing it through Windows, I go to Ubuntu and the installation completes. Then it reboots again to finish the install of the OS. When I boot into Ubuntu now, grub does not appear. Instead, some initramfs stuff comes up in a console with no GUI and says some error stuff about root devices. I read that grub updates cause problems, but the installation never finished and therefore I was never able to go into Ubuntu to lock grub packages, etc. I've run into this error on multiple fresh installs.
View 1 Replies View RelatedI have an AMD Athlon 3200+ 64 and I want to install a dual boot Win7/Xubuntu system. When I try to install Xubuntu 64 bit, but the also the 32 bit version and both Kubuntu versions, the installation stops after the keyboard layout screen. The install completely hangs (no cd or other noticeable activity on the computer) and I have to do a hard reboot to get out of it. I've been looking for a solution and found that the options noapic and/or nolapic in the installer F6 menu might solve this problem,unfortunately they didn't work for me. I've done the CD integrety and memory checks, but no errors were found. I'm pretty lost from here.
I also read installing from the alternative CD might work, but I'm not sure what to expect from this textual installation. If it's only a command-line installer I don't think I will be able to do much with it as I haven't yet been able to find a tutorial on how to use it. Does anyone konw where I can find instructions?
