Slackware :: Track Open Source Software Updates And Releases?
May 14, 2010
I am looking for a way to track updates or changes to open source software, in other words I want automatic notification when new releases are made.
Is there any single place or easy way to do that? Again, What I am looking for is notification when, for example, firefox ver 3.1.2 is released, or when kde releases 4.4.5, k3b makes a major change, etc, etc, etc.
Anyone have any idea how I could accomplish this?

I want to track 2.6.33 kernel releases. I can see that kernel.org has couple of releases like rc1, rc2,rc3, git<>. Kernel 2.6.33. got released early Feb this year.
So How many releases of kernel 2.6.33 were there? I checked at kernel.org but couldn't find the complete information.

We all know we can install a linux system such as Fedora 10 and use it. Being linux, one should in principle get the source codes for everything that has been precompiled (except the proprietary drivers such as nvidia) in the installation DVDs/CDs. Where are the source codes ? Is there a place I can download them ?
To avoid confusion, I am not referring to the kernel source that can be compiled to give a linux kernel, but that does not include the drivers, such as intel_drv.so.
To be more specific, the intel graphic i810 driver has been built into any linux system, but where is the exact source? One answer may be that primary source intellinuxgraphics.com. However, if anyone tries to download the every changing (i.e., keep updated almost every single day) driver source codes from freedesktop.org, it is almost certain that the source codes will not be the same as the one that is finalized in Fedora 10.

Can dd read cylinder 0, head 0 of the hard disk? It seems as if he can't. When I do
Code:
dd if=/dev/sda bs=1 | hexdump -C | more
I think it begins with track 1 and not track 0.

I have no problem with resolving dependencies on my own, but when I uninstall a programm, how could I keep track of the dependencies, thus remove them?
Is there a possibility to store this information in the /var/log/packages files, or better yet, is it possible to include the dependencies in the the .tgz's, so a 'removepkg' would get rid of them as well?

I'm using -current and XFCE 4.6.2 hasn't been playing very nice. Its menu has an odd behavior. AFAIK, XFCE's menu is automatically generated based on the .desktop files from /usr/share/applications and somewhere else when it comes to wine programs. The menu has an "Other" tab, which includes Gvim and, ever since I installed it, Civilization IV BTS.The problem is that sometimes this "other" menu just disappears after staying logged in for some time, like overnight. I was thinking that this had something to do with suspending to ram, but I don't think that's the case as I've been suspending over and over and the "other" menu just stays there.I don't know if someone else has noticed similar behavior so I'm not waiting for an answer as to what may be causing the issue. I'd like to know where I can start looking for the cause.XFCE masters, where can I start looking?

I have 13.0 installed, everthing works OKI installed 13.1 on a separate partition, and dualbootWhen I use 13.1, there is a problem with sound. It's like in the old days when yu played an LP with a scratch, the track keeps repeating. When I move the mouse, sound will continue OK for a few seconds, then same problem. There is no difference, if I use KDE, XFCE, or just boot in runlevel 3 and use the command lineOnly thing I can find in the logs:Quote: May 28 06:37:10 cannabis kernel: hda-intel: IRQ timing workaround is activated for card #0. Suggest a bigger bdl_pos_adj.In 13.0, there is not such a line in the logs. Some info:Quote:

I've a server, and I want to drop all the traffic going out with other source port than 80 (apache) and 22(ssh). The reason is I want to prevent my machine sending packets I don't know (i.e. my server scanning networks or making DDOS attacks without my knowledge). The problem are the updates. If I do what I've said, the updates will not work. I want to allow updates, so I need to let DNS traffic (port 53) and the traffic of the updates to go out.
The problem is the source port. This traffic uses a dynamic port (I think like HTTP). Is there any way to specify a source port to do this? If a have a static port to do this, I would drop all the traffic going out with other port than 22,53,80 and this port.

I'm running Fedora 15 64bit KDE.
After doing a #yum update and updating 451 updates, after rebooting its gets to the white bar going to Fedora 15 at the bottom of the screen and just stops. No error messages or nothing.
What command could possibly bring Fedora back?

The open Office installation on Netbook Remix is too much for an Eeepc 701 (4gb), so, as you do, I uninstalled it and replaced it with Abiword/Gnumeric, but I keep receiving large-sized updates for Open Office! I don't need them (or in fact the CUPS updates either), but I don't know how to stop them from being rather forcefully offered each day.

I can not seem to find a pdf viewer browser plugin other than the actual craprobat plugin from Adobe. The default Ubuntu install comes with a perfectly good open source stand alone pdf viewer, but this means that the browser has to save it to your download directory then run the external viewer, and eventually your download directory is all cluttered up. I would much rather just view the pdf in the browser. Is there no open source browser plugin?

I refuse to use .net for any of my apps since I hate using proprietary code that wont work on other platforms without using emulation.
However, I do like how all the hard work is done for you and you can spend more time implementing, then actually coding stuff like socket classes, date/time classes and other wrappers to make the complex C/C++ code easier to use and tie with each other I have a custom library that I've been adding to as I need stuff, but then I got thinking, there must be something out there with everything I need to code applications, that is easy to use and more reliable and efficient then anything I'd ever make.
Does such framework exist?

I just installed Steam on my Linux machine tonite, following this guide [URL] ....
When I try to get the client going, it just connects to my account, checks for updates, verifyies data, and then starts over. It will keep doing that until I end the program, and never opens so I have access to my games.
I don't know if it is useful or not, but here is a picture I took of terminal I ran steam from (I don't know how to do a screen capture in linux).
