Debian :: Package Manager States There Are Updates But There Are None

Jan 28, 2010

I'm running Debian Lenny on my trusty old Thinkpad T41 laptop. Everything is running great with only one issue I can't seem to resolve. Under Gnome, the package manager will state that there are updates available. When I run the package manager to install the updates, none are listed. From the console, when I run apt-get update, apt-get upgrade, it states that there are 0 packages available. I have no idea why this is happening. I'm not receiving any error messages and none of the sources are giving errors.

Ubuntu :: Removing Updates From Updates Manager List

Jan 29, 2011

There are some updates in the Update Manager list which I do not install. Among them, some drivers for HP Printers (I don't know why this cropped up; I don't even use printers on my laptop), and gcj updates (I use gcc/g++ but not gcj). I unchecked them the first time I saw them on my UM list. However, for every subsequent batch of new updates, UM retains these updates and I need to uncheck them every time. How can I remove them totally from my UM list?

Security :: Updates: Specify Source Port For Traffic?

Dec 14, 2010

I've a server, and I want to drop all the traffic going out with other source port than 80 (apache) and 22(ssh). The reason is I want to prevent my machine sending packets I don't know (i.e. my server scanning networks or making DDOS attacks without my knowledge). The problem are the updates. If I do what I've said, the updates will not work. I want to allow updates, so I need to let DNS traffic (port 53) and the traffic of the updates to go out.

The problem is the source port. This traffic uses a dynamic port (I think like HTTP). Is there any way to specify a source port to do this? If a have a static port to do this, I would drop all the traffic going out with other port than 22,53,80 and this port.

I am looking for a way to track updates or changes to open source software, in other words I want automatic notification when new releases are made.

Is there any single place or easy way to do that? Again, What I am looking for is notification when, for example, firefox ver 3.1.2 is released, or when kde releases 4.4.5, k3b makes a major change, etc, etc, etc.

Anyone have any idea how I could accomplish this?

Fedora X86/64bit :: No Updates Found After F10 X86_64 Install

Apr 5, 2009

I installed Fedora 10 x86_64 from DVD this weekend. Once the install was completed and I booted into the new install, I ran the Software Update expecting to find and download security updates. However, to my surprise no updates were found! The install DVD was downloaded and burnt to DVD about two weeks ago. Did the installer fetch and install the F10 updates? Or did I mess up my install and/or configuration of F10? I remember when I installed F9 there were a lot of updates found right after the install.

Programming :: Bash Script - Source Not Found

Feb 25, 2011

I want to edit the environment with a bash script, a part of my script is showed in the post. Its not everything, but the rest is working fine. At the begin of my script I've the follow line Code: #!/bin/bash
set -e First I tried with this solution. Code: sudo chmod 777 /etc
sudo rm /etc/environment
echo 'PATH="/usr/local/sbin:/usr/local/bin:/usr/sbin:/usr/bin:/sbin:/bin:/usr/games:/usr/local/ruby/bin"' > */etc/environment
sudo chmod 755 /etc
source /etc/environment Error, source not found

The second solution was this:
Code: sudo chmod 777 /etc
sudo rm /etc/environment
echo 'PATH="/usr/local/sbin:/usr/local/bin:/usr/sbin:/usr/bin:/sbin:/bin:/usr/games:/usr/local/ruby/bin"' > */etc/environment
sudo chmod 755 /etc
. /etc/environment
This one didn't give an error, but if I try this:
Code: ruby -v got an error
so the environment didn't worked.

If I use both commands
Code: source /etc/environment
Code: . /etc/environment
In the terminal, without a bash script, it works, so if I do
Code: ruby -v
It works and showed the right version.

General :: Kernal Source Files Are Not Found In FC-12?

Jan 7, 2011

I am Vamsi from Alcatel-Lucent. We have a software to configure the wireless broadband devices to the Linux machine. Till now, it was running on FC-5. When we need to add any new device, we used to add it in airprime.c, sw.h and usb-serial.c under /usr/src/linux/drivers/usb/serial directoy.

Now we are trying to upgrade the system to FC-12. But I am not able to find any kernal files under /usr/src/kernels/2.6.31.5-127.fc12.i686.PAE/drivers/usb/serial directory. I saw in some websites that the kernal files can be found at: /root/rpmbuild/SOURCES/linux-2.6.31/drivers/usb/serial. But in my system, there is no rpmbuild directory.

Ubuntu :: Where To Get Info On Update Manager Updates

Feb 24, 2010

Is there an easy way/place to get more info on the updates that the Ubuntu (9.04) Update Manager presents to you? I know you can highlight one and look below at the "Changes" and "Description". But how can you find a real explanation of what the update is? To give one exampe: There's a 5.0MB update called: openoffice.org-writer It appears to be a new version of the Writer program?? or is it just security updates?? Should I install it if I'm happy with the current Writer version? bottom line: where can I get plain talk about what these updates are?
