View 3 RepliesI reinstalled Linux, in a new Partition, just formatted. Now, when I try to install, or copy, into my /usr/local/"whatever" folders I just see broken links of the files (the little x in the right top of the file, I presume is a broken link).But when I see the file in nautilus, the files seems to be good. But the programs doesn't works. The programs I've been installing are NukeX and UV Layout. The weird thing is that the very first time I installed Linux everything worked smoothly. Since I formatted the partition I've only unistalled Noveau and installed the Nvidia latest drivers of my GPU.

So in a not so brilliant move, I have uninstalled hplip and hptool and reinstalled it.Even tough the command line message is telling that it is installed, the HPtoolbox would not run (both from the command line or the menu).Did some digging and found that all the HP related files in /usr/bin were all labelled <broken link>.So, I deleted all these.Before I tried to reinstall again, should I worry about all the leftover hplip files?
View 1 Replies View RelatedI had F11 which was working OK'ish on my laptop and decided to upgrade to F12 when it was available. This was not too successful and I started getting problem with updates to the extent that I could not install any as I got errors which stopped the updates. Bit the bullet and backed up all the data then wiped the disk and started from a clean downloaded DVD of the full F12. Still getting problems running the updates (output below) and trying to install/run VirtualBox is also failing (also below). The build and source mentioned show as broken links, where do I go next?

View 2 Replies View RelatedMy recent borked upgrade to -current inspired me to try to come up with a way to sanity-check the lib and bin dirs for broken library symlinks (possibly indicating missing libs) and for binaries and libraries that belong to no installed package, as well as missing dependencies.
This script is the result.
I've checked the script results manually, and it appears to be accurate, so I figured I'd post it here for a second opinion, and/or because others may find it useful too. I'm not aware of another popular method of doing this on Slackware, so here it is:

As the title says, i was in the middle of the upgrade, when the system froze then a black screen with the text similar to: starting apache ..... starting ..... ... in that way, but with more text, i could not remember the exact details. When i boot up, it say /dev not found, and other errors, and a weird black screen that seems to be loading modules appears, but never finishes and starts to act strange. Any way i can get this fixed without just copying my data and reimaging my partition.

Normally on my several computers I simply pull up the Terminal, point links to google.com using

Then ENTER to accept the redirect, down arrow to skip over the logo image, USERNAME, ENTER, PASSWORD, ENTER, ENTER.
Naturally, this is EXTREMELY time consuming, as I have about 5 computers located around campus and must physically walk to the machines and login every single week.
My question is, How would I formulate a program that does the following;
1) checks for connectivity (i.e. is able to reach/resolve to the greater part of the internet) and
2) automatically fills in the credentials on the links login page?

The lists are a fairly simple regex and fckeditor magically reformats the tables, so all I'm left with is the links. But I'm not a regex master. How do I reformat code...
I'm in Ubuntu and want to navigate the directories of a Windows box upstairs. I can see it and navigate around the shared folders using the file browser (the address bar shows smb://computername/shared-directory/) but how do I navigate around using the command line? But, I do have one: When I opened "Files and Folders" in Dash and clicked on a .jpg image, a GNOME-looking dialogue popped up asking me which program I wanted to use to displayed the image. So, I went to make sure that opening an image on my desktop had the correct results. It did, and opens in Eye of Gnome. I messed up and made a typo, and now when I try to click on ANY folder or file in Dash, it says that it can't find the program "E" (which was my mistake/typo/whatever/I didn't finish typing and had a twitch or something xD). I cannot figure out how to set Dash to open [x file] with [x program].

View 8 Replies View RelatedI'm trying to get more acquainted with the terminal but have run into a problem. I have a flash drive that originally had a name that consisted of numbers and letters. After using the flash drive on Windows recently, I saw that its name had changed and now contains special characters (the name is now �NPM=:�N). It poses no problem when navigating through folders graphically, but because I usually have multiple external drives and the first character of the flash drive name is a special character, I have no idea how to 'cd' to the flash drive from the terminal. So the only solution I see is to either type these special characters in the terminal or somehow cycle through all the folders in /media with the keyboard.

(1)Is it possible to use mouse to move cursor to desired position? For instance , I am at end of line & with mouse I can select a portion of line to copy but cannot move the cursor to middle of line without pressing left arrow key for looong time.
(2)I have noticed that if I boot with my USB in non-persistent mode.In the beginning I can use ctrl+arrow to move to previous or next word. After sometime ctrl+right arrow append ;5C and ctrl+left arrow appends ;5D

View 3 Replies View RelatedWhenever I navigate into a folder containing video files, my entire system freezes/crashes. The keyboard, video, and the entire system become entirely unresponsive.
I can recreate the problem every single time by simply opening a nautilus window, then going into a directory containing 1 or more video files (avi, mkv, mp4, etc.). It doesn't seem to matter whether I stay in the folder, or quickly navigate away either. Seconds later, the system freezes entirely, to the point where my capslock key does not even toggle the capslock indicator.
I first noticed the problem when I installed 10.10 months ago on my Acer AspireOne D250. I had recently upgraded to ubuntu natty beta hoping the problem might have been fixed.
Loading up gedit (as an example) I am unable to navigate reliably using keyboard navigation controls with the new Unity interface. There are times when left/right will work within a document but up/down will not. After a reboot left/top/right will work but down will not unless you physically click on the position you would like the cursor. I'm guessing unity unity is stealing these keys but not releasing them back to the applications?
View 2 Replies View RelatedI'm trying to install Flash Player 10 (to access Hulu) with no success. Here are the instructions Adobe gave me:
1. Click the download link to begin installation. A dialog box will appear asking you where to save the file.
2. Save the .tar.gz file to your desktop and wait for the file to download completely.
3. Unpackage the file. A directory called install_flash_player_10_linux will be created.
4. In terminal, navigate to this directory and type ./flashplayer-installer to run the installer. Click Enter. The installer will instruct you to shut down your browser(s).
5. Once the installation is complete, the plug-in will be installed in your Mozilla browser. To verify, launch Mozilla and choose Help > About Plug-ins from the browser menu.
When I'm in the terminal program, I type this in but don't get a response. I'm not sure how to navigate to directories...
I'm still somewhat of a n00b to ubuntu, so please excuse the probable fail of this post.So a while back i dual booted Ubuntu along with my Windows 7 operating system.I'm trying to navigate to the directories in my Windows partiion, which includes a C (0S) partion and D (Data parttion).

I'm the only person seeing this: xpdf is slow to render PDFs and navigating through a document is ponderous. The problem is there on my laptop ( Core i3 ) and my desktop ( Core i7 ). I played with the ./configure options in the Slackbuild and deleting the -mtune=i686 option made it much more responsive. It's so bad I've got Debian on a separate partition and I boot into that if I need to look at PDFs.

I'm running Fedora 15 with current updates and kernel. I do not have anything special or non-standard about my configuration or setup. I use grsync to sync my home folder files to a remote rsync server on my network. I've checked my hard drives and my memory and everything else I can think. Here is the problem:
grsync will run for some time and once it nears completion it will crash. This, however, is no standard crash. It literally shuts my computer "OFF". I have shared the remote rsync folder through CIFS as well and I can copy those exact same files through nautilus with drag and drop without issue. I have had a few occasions where the rsync process will complete without issue, but this is a rare occasion. Since it powers my computer completely off I do not enjoy the luxury of having any log files or messages to attempt to diagnose from.

I was having a problem with a fresh 11.04 install and the VPN software I use for work. I found the fix was to upgrade the software, so I downloaded an RPM, converted it to .deb and installed it via dpkg. The install worked and the VPN software now works, but Package Manager says I have a broken package and wants to 'upgrade' to the older broken one. How can I fix this without breaking my VPN SW again?

If the problem persists, please reinstall the application." Even though there is no Adobe Reader installed on my p.c.
I then have to right click the link and "Save link as How do I set the PATH variable so that Evince can open the document directly without first having to save the link?

I have a script for the Sangoma wanpipe drivers that I modified to add the LSB information so that "update rc.d wanrouter defaults" runs correctly. The symbolic links from rcN.d to init.However, when I reboot the system, all the rcN.d links have disappeared and wanrouter isn't automatically started!I've never seen this kind of behaviour from a Unix based system in 20+ years, so I'm baffled as to how to fix the problem.

Following the recommendation of the web site (http://ubuntu-tutorials.com/2006/12/...-all-versions/) I tried to set up a folder (/usr/local/myprograms/luckybackup_scripts) containing the scripts, and to put symlinks pointing to the scripts in /usr/lock/bin.
The object of this design was to have my local programs clearly separate from any other programs, and to point to them with symlinks in /usr/local/bin. is because /usr/local/bin is automatically searched when a terminal command is issued so the user need not specify the whole path to the script.The problem that I ran into was that the system would not let me create symlinks to scripts in /usr/local/myprograms/luchybackup_scripts. While ths symlink was created, it was invalid and did point to any target. The only symlinks that I could create had to be in the same folder as the target, namely /usr/local/myprograms/luckybackup_scripts. I tried to create the links using Terminal and "sudo ln -s
Links from third party applications do not work any more. When I go to click on links from PDF,s or from Pino or KeePass nothing happens. I've tested different browsers Opera, Chrome, Midori etc same thing links just don't work from third party apps.
