Ubuntu Installation :: Multiboot - Change Which Version Of GRUB Is Used When Boot Up?

I'm having an issue with GRUB, I have four OSes on my hard drive. Here they are in the order I installed them:
Windows 7 (Windows bootloader)
Ubuntu (GRUB 1.97)
YLMF OS (GRUB 2)
Debian (Some ancient bootloader)
(For those of you unfamiliar with it, YLMF OS is an Ubuntu-based distro re-skinned to look like Windows XP. Other than the theme and branding it's exactly the same as Ubuntu) Each time I installed another operating system, it replaced my original bootloader with its own. I made the mistake of installing Debian last, thus leaving me "stranded" with an old version of GRUB. Since at the time I was relatively inexperienced with Linux, I solved the problem by reinstalling Ubuntu, which then replaced the bootloader with GRUB 1.97.
I mainly use YLMF OS, and so when I wanted to change some GRUB menu settings (the default entry, timeout, etc.) I naturally changed the /etc/default/grub file in the YLMF OS partition, not the one in Ubuntu. Once I rebooted I realized that my changes weren't being applied for that reason. Thus my problem is that my computer is using the GRUB that Ubuntu installed, not the one YLMF OS came with. How do I change which version of GRUB is used when I boot up? Yes, I could just change the settings in the Ubuntu partition, but YLMF OS came with the newer/est version of GRUB, so I want to use that instead.

I have just installed Ubuntu 9.10 on a laptop previously running 8.10
I am unable to change the default OS in Grub from Ubuntu 9.10 as I cannot find /boot/grub/menu.lst.
How do you change the default OS in this newer version of Grub.

The first is I seem to have 3 GRUB installs. So whilst I update the one from my live session, the change does not appear in the boot up menu. I had installed 10.10 from a CD into a different partition (sda6), but that will not boot, so I have just deleted this and done another grub install and update. The kernel I am using has just been updated from 10.04 to 10.10 too, and it is this that I use and the Grub I have been working on (sda5).

I want Truecrypt to ask for password for Windows XP as usual but with the standard [ESC] option, on selecting that, i.e via Escape key, I want it to find the grub for the (unencrypted) Ubuntu install. I've installed Windows XP on the 120Gb hard drive of a Toshiba NB100 netbook then partitioned to make room for Ubuntu 10.04 and installed that after the Windows XP install. When I encrypt Windows XP, Truecrypt will overwrite the grub entry in the master boot record (MBR), I believe (?) and I won't be able to choose between XP and Ubuntu anymore. So I need to restore it back.
My setup:
Partitions:
Windows XP, NTFS (to be encrypted with Truecrypt), 40Gb
/boot (Ext4, 1Gb)
Ubuntu swap, 4Gb

The key area of the problem is how to instruct Truecrypt when escape key is pressed, and how the Grub/Ubuntu can be made visible to the truecrypt bootloader to find it, when the esc key is pressed. Also knowing as chaining.

I've been using Linux for over a decade, so no need to worry about the obvious. I'm positive that I have my partitions/install correct. What has me baffled is that Fedora 14, which uses GRUB 0.97 (GRUB legacy) - boots Windows flawlessly every single time on the same hardware, but Ubuntu's (or the upstream Debian's) GRUB legacy do not - even though they are based on the same upstream code from the GNU Savannah servers.
No matter what I've tried I cannot get the Debian or Ubuntu version of GRUB/GRUB-legacy to boot any recent Windows 64 beyond XP (Vista or 7). All that it does is resets the computer when Windows attempts to boot, without an error. GRUB is notoriously difficult to compile, so before I try to compile code from RedHat's archives - any thoughts,experiences, similar issues - whatever?

i installed it on a external HDD. my primary OS is windows 7 on my 1 internal hard drive. After i installed ubuntu whenever i boot up my computer i have to have my external hdd plugged in and turned on or else i get "cannot find GRUB" then some rescue thing comes up where i can type stuff. i would just like to move the GRUB loader to my primary hard drive or at least recover my windows loader but have ubuntu on it.

The thing is, I'm still keeping my old Windows 7 partition and data, and I want to access it faster, editing the grub options, to change the timer on it, and the default booting option.

Just migrating to linux but I don't want to give up linux just yet so I've stuck in a 2nd hard drive to install linux on which I've done, now I have windows on one hard drive and linux on the other but my computer boots straight onto linux. I need the option to choose which os to boot into on startup which I've heard GRUB is the best option but I have no idea how to go about setting this up.

i am trying to change the boot order on the GRUB menu so that the countdown automatically starts on an older kernel. From what i can see all the solutions on the web want me to edit the /boot/grub/menu.lst file. The problem is that i don't have one. Someone also mentioned that if i don't have a menu.lst file then i should look for the grub.conf file. I don't have on of those either. The closest thing in /boot/grub is grub.cfg but that looks nothing like the descriptions i have heard of /boot/grub/menu.lst file

I've just created a bootdisk (ssd) with multiples Squasfs images I can choose to boot at the Grub2 menu.No I tried to put the sqfs-images into a ramdisk. Therefore I edited the script '/usr/share/initramfstools/ scripts/ casper'. I used the 'dirty hacks'in the ubuntuforums.org/boottoram howto but I suited them for my needs.Now the Systems stops after the kernel and doesn't find a root system.
The sqfs-image without the modification of the 'casper'-script still boots but doesn't load into ram completely.

I want to use Remastersys Backup, but their webpage [url] says that it only works with Grub-legacy, not with Grub-2 (Grub-pc).
What I currently have is Grub-2, and the question is can I safely switch from that to legacy, i.e., with a simple synaptic remove and install?
The Remastersys package actually wants to install, also in synaptic, the dummy package "grub"; so should I allow it to take care of the switch, or do I do it myself as above?
Using Debian Squeeze only, no multi-booting.

I got to the point where I need to save the file called '11_Windows' However, in the terminal after trying to save it. (ctrl + x, yes to the save dialogue, then pressing enter) I come across an error that says ' [ Error writing /ect/grub.d/11_Windows: No such file or directory ]'I have spent about an hour trying to find round about ways to create/ save this file and none of them have worked. If someone could tell me what I am doing wrong or what I need to do, it would be greatly appreciated.

I am currently doing a tri-boot (using refit) with Linux, Windows, and OS X. I was wondering if it was possible to change up the boot loader for Linux. I basically wanted grub to not pop-up and just boot the default version of Ubuntu. Also the boot loader comes up with the options to boot Windows and OS X and I was wondering if it would be possible to remove those from the list as well?

I've installed 1 130GB Vista partition, 13 10GB Linux partitions and 1 8GB swap partition on my desktop machine. After the last install (on hd0,1) I copied the info from the menu.lst/grub.conf file from each partition into 1 file and replaced the menu.lst file in the last installation (sda2) with that large file (removing duplicate entries).
Now, when I boot I get a list of boot options for all 14 partitons (includes Vista). However, I can only access 5 of them. The others return a grub error 2 message: Bad File or Directory Type. As a note, "Super Grub" boots them all but takes some trial and error to get the specific correct entry. I'd like a simple menu (could live with some drop downs from main menu).

As I stated, "Super Grub" boots all - but with some "gyrations" on several entries. My purpose is to use the machine as a demo to induce fellow workers to swithc to Linux. Hence, would like a more simple menuing system on startup. For info: the partitions that will boot are sda1,2,5,11,and 12. sda2 was the last partion installed. sda4 is swap.

I tried to do my parents a favor by installing Ubuntu 9.10 alongside WinXP on their PC -- same configuration I have on my desktop at home. The install went fine, but since I made a poor buying decision on purchasing a MSI motherboard in the past, Ubuntu immediately crashes after boot (other MSI board users having the same issue, no help from MSI).
The computer tries to boot Ubuntu by default unless something else is selected from the boot menu. How do I change the boot preference from default (choice 0) to WinXP? I tried manually changing this (editing the grub.cfg file), but the file said not to edit, that it's generated by something else...How do I have WinXP load by default instead of the broken Ubuntu?

I installed Gnome 3 on a free partition of my netbook but I lost the boot to my suse kde...(MBR). I launched a live CD on USB but cannot restore Grub; the only way is to reinstall the KDE. Then it boots but does not show Gnome 3. Why the installer does not take into account both OS?

Dual Booting my laptop and unable to change the Boot Records on the drive. Not because I dont know how, but my primary OS will fail to boot(win7).
I have drive partitioned as follows...
sda1 = Win7 system (default install)
sda2 = Win7 Main (default install)
sda3 = swap
sda4 = Extension (I think thats what its called)
sda5 = / (ext4)
What I need is a boot cd or perferably Grub installed on a 256MB Thumb drive with the options to load the installed system from sda5.

I had a minor problem with my ubuntu install, and a person said to go to startup manager and select reset to original settings. I did this and when I restarted It asked me to boot ubuntu 9.10, which would not work as I upgraded long ago. Now all I get is the option to boot 9.10, and I really want to get back into my computer. Running ubuntu 10.04 with latest updates as if 25 september New Zealand Time.

I am using the latest version of Ubuntu Linux. I've been using it for about a month. One day, as i booted up my computer, something didn't go as planed. It started to boot up, but it went to some screen that said: "Gnu Grub version 1.97 beta 4 Minimal BASH-like editing is supported. For the first word, TAB lists possible command completions. I think the pc updated, or at least that is the only thing I can figure. Anyhow, pc froze so I reboot system. I have dual setup, after choosing Ubuntu, I receive GNU GRUB version 1.97~Beta 4 error. I am also told to press TAB for further commands, but none of the commands seem to do anything.

I am trying to install ubuntu 10.04. I had ubuntu 10.10 but I want to install 10.04 (32 bit) because 10.10 is slow. Problems with cd drive/cd caused installation to be incomplete so system cannot reboot at all.
