General :: Setting Up Grub To Multiboot

I am a new user of Ubuntu and I am having problems setting up GRUB to multiboot Windows 7, Windows Vista, and Ubuntu 11.04. Following this guide http://erickoo.wordpress.com/2009/06...-karmic-koala/
I got to the point where I need to save the file called '11_Windows' However, in the terminal after trying to save it. (ctrl + x, yes to the save dialogue, then pressing enter) I come across an error that says ' [ Error writing /ect/grub.d/11_Windows: No such file or directory ]'I have spent about an hour trying to find round about ways to create/ save this file and none of them have worked. If someone could tell me what I am doing wrong or what I need to do, it would be greatly appreciated.

I downloaded and installed fedora 10 on the second partition of the second harddrive in my system. I installed grub on the second drive as well. I added windows XP (the entire first hard drive) and windows server 2003 (the first partition of the second HD) to the boot list. In my bios I set the second HD in the boot device list.Now I can boot fedora 10 BUT when I select xp or server 2003 I get an error message that reads:- NTLDR is missing.

I've installed 1 130GB Vista partition, 13 10GB Linux partitions and 1 8GB swap partition on my desktop machine. After the last install (on hd0,1) I copied the info from the menu.lst/grub.conf file from each partition into 1 file and replaced the menu.lst file in the last installation (sda2) with that large file (removing duplicate entries).
Now, when I boot I get a list of boot options for all 14 partitons (includes Vista). However, I can only access 5 of them. The others return a grub error 2 message: Bad File or Directory Type. As a note, "Super Grub" boots them all but takes some trial and error to get the specific correct entry. I'd like a simple menu (could live with some drop downs from main menu).

As I stated, "Super Grub" boots all - but with some "gyrations" on several entries. My purpose is to use the machine as a demo to induce fellow workers to swithc to Linux. Hence, would like a more simple menuing system on startup. For info: the partitions that will boot are sda1,2,5,11,and 12. sda2 was the last partion installed. sda4 is swap.

I installed Gnome 3 on a free partition of my netbook but I lost the boot to my suse kde...(MBR). I launched a live CD on USB but cannot restore Grub; the only way is to reinstall the KDE. Then it boots but does not show Gnome 3. Why the installer does not take into account both OS?

I'm having an issue with GRUB, I have four OSes on my hard drive. Here they are in the order I installed them:
Windows 7 (Windows bootloader)
Ubuntu (GRUB 1.97)
YLMF OS (GRUB 2)
Debian (Some ancient bootloader)
(For those of you unfamiliar with it, YLMF OS is an Ubuntu-based distro re-skinned to look like Windows XP. Other than the theme and branding it's exactly the same as Ubuntu) Each time I installed another operating system, it replaced my original bootloader with its own. I made the mistake of installing Debian last, thus leaving me "stranded" with an old version of GRUB. Since at the time I was relatively inexperienced with Linux, I solved the problem by reinstalling Ubuntu, which then replaced the bootloader with GRUB 1.97.
I mainly use YLMF OS, and so when I wanted to change some GRUB menu settings (the default entry, timeout, etc.) I naturally changed the /etc/default/grub file in the YLMF OS partition, not the one in Ubuntu. Once I rebooted I realized that my changes weren't being applied for that reason. Thus my problem is that my computer is using the GRUB that Ubuntu installed, not the one YLMF OS came with. How do I change which version of GRUB is used when I boot up? Yes, I could just change the settings in the Ubuntu partition, but YLMF OS came with the newer/est version of GRUB, so I want to use that instead.

I want Truecrypt to ask for password for Windows XP as usual but with the standard [ESC] option, on selecting that, i.e via Escape key, I want it to find the grub for the (unencrypted) Ubuntu install. I've installed Windows XP on the 120Gb hard drive of a Toshiba NB100 netbook then partitioned to make room for Ubuntu 10.04 and installed that after the Windows XP install. When I encrypt Windows XP, Truecrypt will overwrite the grub entry in the master boot record (MBR), I believe (?) and I won't be able to choose between XP and Ubuntu anymore. So I need to restore it back.
My setup:
Partitions:
Windows XP, NTFS (to be encrypted with Truecrypt), 40Gb
/boot (Ext4, 1Gb)
Ubuntu swap, 4Gb

The key area of the problem is how to instruct Truecrypt when escape key is pressed, and how the Grub/Ubuntu can be made visible to the truecrypt bootloader to find it, when the esc key is pressed. Also knowing as chaining.

There are lots of OSs and Linux dists to install on your netbook, and I want to make it as easy as possible to install, remove and switch between them.
Just installing a dist and then another one after it will replace the GRUB boot screen every time, and some dists might override previous GRUB menus entirely.
On a previous machine I created a GRUB partition which chain-loads GRUB for each dist, but now I can't remember how I did it.
The hard drive is currently empty, since I started playing around with repartitioning. What is the easiest way to install GRUB to a partition? Links are welcome, but please no generic "install GRUB" guides because the ones I've found haven't been relevant to my particular situation (empty hard drive, multi boot environment, no CD/floppy)..

i am trying at the moment to setup up a multiboot system on my laptop, i need to keep windows 7 on it for work purposes, but i am planning on installing 4 different distros of linux on there as well, after windows i have over 400 gig spare so what i wanted to do was create 4 partitions of 80 gigs each plus a swap drive partition that each distro of linux can share, is 80 gig each enough for fedora security lab, kubuntu, ubuntu multimedia studio and linux mint 9? also what format should i partition each as? can i make each distro create a home drive within its own partition?

I currently have FC3 Linux which installed itself on the hard disk using LVM partitioning, so it is basically all one big partition. I would like to try some other distributions and upgrade to something newer, but don't want to lose my current capabilities and data files, and I know nothing or less about LVM. Is it possible (and if so an example would be nice) to install a non-LVM-based distribution on the LVM disk and have multi-boot options? Or do I have to start over new and drop the LVM? My guess is that I should save my /home (data files and .rc files) on a backup device first, then somewhere/somehow create a new partition for installing another distribution.

I've been trying to install multibootisos.exe on to my flash drive. Instead of getting the menu like in the picture I get a black screen that looks somewhat like a command prompt. I am using an 8G PNY Attache flash drive.

Don't know if I should have posted in Ubuntu specific section but since it involves grub2 and a quirk in my bios, I have attempted to multiboot 3 Windows versions and the problem I had was intalling a second Ubuntu. (Don't ask!) I had success multibooting with grub legacy on an older computer but this computer has a tricky mb which won't let me install grub to the second drive on an IDE port. What I mean by this is that since I already had boot files to the older drive in mbr- it won't allow me to install to mbr of the other drive in IDE port even if set first in bios boot order, my old computer allowed me to do so, exept perhaps its because 2 HDD were SCSI... (I have other HDD installed in RAID 0 on the other sata ports supported by mb (fakeraid) but I will use these for video editing as scratch disks later. One other HDD used for data is on the Raid port but not in an array).
I succeeded in installing Ubuntu desktop only after realising that I had to first switch my disk order in bios- otherwise the system would just hang. U. Desktop grub had sucessfully found Win bootloader links to both XP and Vista. I then installed Win 7 and used easy BCD and grub2 boot entry to link back to my Ubuntu Desktop grub 2 menu.
The problem occured when installing Ubuntu Studio ( for which I created a separate /boot partition) and I decided to install grub2 to mbr since it had correctly detected all my OSes! But then it seems it never installed correctly to the mbr. I still had Win 7 BCD bootloader in MBR! I tried to link easy BCD boot entry to the /boot drive but that didn't work and I ended up having to reinstall Win7 because I had overrid the BCD with faulty neogrub mapping entries- which I then removed and kept the orginal neogrub that still points to Ubuntu Desktop grub menu.
I also now realise that because I installed Ubuntu Desktop before I switched the HDD boot order in bios- U. Desktop's grub.cfg sees root of Desktop grub differently than neogrub BCD does root=(hd4,7) vs multiboot kludge (hd3,6) and at first I tried to install grub in the wrong hdds and partitions- I based mapping on neogrub's to find /Boot (hd3,2) and (hd3, 1) which is wrong!
What I am attempting to do now is to chainload grub2 from my Ubuntu studio located in /Boot with what I thought was the right mapping but still no success:

Note: I somehow got a problem loading into XP after all these failed attempts and a system 32 file seems to have gotten lost-haven"t attempted to fix yet. Just wondering in passing what happens if I chainloaded into Windows by error- if that could have corrupted it? Right now 3 out of 5 OS are bootable. I hope I can repair it without messing up my mbr again. Another issue is that some devices are on busy IRQs and then suddenly its resolved and my onboard LAN suddenly stops working at times so I don't know if any of this could cause XP to get stuck at loading screen.

I have been able to get a few of my desired tools working 100% (dban, gparted, ophcrack, UBCD) but what I would ultimately hope to get working is CloneZilla! I was able to get the Clonezilla user interface to load correctly but when I choose any of the options I encounter an error "ntfs volume version 3.1" repetitively. I have a feeling it is because I am launching the iso wrong in my menu.lst config file for grub. This is what I have.

I currently have 2 operating systems on my main hdd: Ubuntu and WinXP My current setup - [storage NTFS partition, solely data][17GB WinXP partition][{extended partion}Ubuntu + swap]: [URL] I have a second SATA hdd that I would like to install Arch Linux on to. It uses GRUB Legacy, and Ubuntu uses GRUB 2. I would like to know how I would go about booting this, and figure out where my current bootloader is installed to. i.e. /dev/sda or /dev/sda5 (the / ubuntu partiton)

Since I have been using grub-legacy in quite an unorthodox manner, and ironically, getting benefits that an otherwise obedient user wouldn't even dream of getting, this question may, most probably, pose a challenge to all those who don't understand the filthy tricks of grub. So, here I am, trying to install grub, in a manner, that makes it independent of all operating systems on my computer. As I understand it, a bootloader is so important, especially when it is used to boot multiple OSs, that I deem it mandatory for it to be installed in a manner making it independent of all operating systems it is used for.
What I did till now:I have a 24 Mega Byte partition to which I copied /boot/grub/*I run the command: # grub-install --root-directory=/mounted-partition-holding-the-copied-files '(hd0)'Grub boots, but the menus are not displayed presenting me with a cute shell with limited commands. My next strategy in this battle, is to copy the device.map and grub.cfg files from a working installation - a sort of a heart transplant.

I just upgraded to Lucid Lynx, and while everything kernel-wise is running fine so far, I have a problem that is giving me heartburn. It appears that I have broken my Windows XP boot command, as selecting that boot option will only loop back to the GRUB selection menu. The Partition is there, and I can access it through ubuntu's file manager, but right now I simply cannot boot into windows. Partition information: 540gb set for windows (NTFS), 55 set for unbuntu.

During the update, an autoconfig screen came up asking me to select what I wanted to boot from in GRUB. I selected what I thought referred to the harddisk partitions (and not simply selecting all of them. ) Is there any way to bring that window back up to change that? while I am a *cough* Windows power user *cough*, I don't understand ubuntu (or Linux) very well, so please keep that in mind when replying.

I'm trying to configure GRUB to boot XP preferentially- my wife insists. Having looked up the GRUB manual I see that I can set this using the default command.
The problem is, when I go to my grub command line default is not a recognized command. If I hit TAB for a list of commands, it isn't there.
I think I'm using some 0.9x version of GRUB, since the partitions etc seem to be numbered starting at 0, not 1.
While I'm at it, I was just going to play around and figure this out, but: the menu interface lists five versions of Ubuntu (all those weird kernel variations) then XP. So would XP be default 1 or default 5?

I Just updated my 10.04 LTS system, which dual boots Windows XP. Prior to the update the default was to boot to XP, now it is to Memtest.
I tried to edit /etc/default/ grub and make the default be 14 instead of 12, which would be XP, but Ubuntu, (using gedit), refused to accept my change.
I don't have a problem scrolling around to pick XP, or the latest Linux kernel to boot, but my wife sure does. How can I make Ubuntu/Grub default to to XP ?

I've been using squeeze for a year or two now, on a PC dual booting with windows xp. Not long ago I thought that, as it's now become the stable release version, I'd do a fresh install, which I've been trying to do with the first two dvds. The installation proceeds as expected, up to and including setting grub. However, although grub saysthat it has detected windows xp, and I tell it to set up the dual boot, the computer on reboot goes straight into windows xp, with no on-scrteen option shown for choosing debian.

I have created usb stick from which I install fedora. The bootloader is on the MBR of the usb stick and I want to put it onto the harddrive.I have tried running grub and setting up the MBR on the hard drive, but attemts to load the kernel fail with "Error 15: File not found".

So I just had gotten to know the old Grub a little when I upgraded Ubuntu to find the new Grub, which I barely understand at all! My use of Ubuntu is mostly for learning and recreational as my bread and butter is working on people's messed up Windoze systems, since that is where the work is. Naturally I've got to use and work with Windoze to know how to fix it and keep it running cleanly, but Ubuntu was the first Linux I found that to me seems like something that could be potentially be embraced by "non geeks". I have as yet to get anyone to try it; it is all about keeping up with the Joneses and having what they have. There is also that old pervasive myth that you get what you pay for, which with computers, I find the opposite is so often true, that the good stuff is mostly free.
In any case I dabble a lot with Ubuntu for fun and personal knowledge, but since I put 10 on I had only Windoze 7 on my machine at the time. It picked it up and I purposely installed Grub to my Ubuntu drive (I used separate physical drives, so that if you removed the Ubuntu drive, 7 would boot as if Grub and Linux were never on the machine and that is the way I like it since I tinker a lot.). The trouble is that I need Win 7 to be the default and I don't know how to do that with Grub 2 (is it 2?) I used to know with the old one. Also, I have since added a 160GB PATA drive with XP on it, since so much of the help I am asked to give over the phone is with XP and I am not one who can talk others through things unless I can see it myself. Plus there are some things I do that just plain old work best with XP. So I also need to add XP to my boot menu, and it is, on a separate physical drive as well, and I wanted that the same too; if you made the XP drive the priority boot device it will boot XP as if it was the only OS on the machine.
What the ideal for me would be is to have the Ubuntu drive as the one it boots from, Windoze 7 to be the default OS, and XP to be on the menu too. I have been able in all of the time with Ubuntu and Linux in general to find precious little info on how to do things with multiple physical drives. It seems to be taken for granted that the only way people multi boot is with separate partitions on a single physical drive

I have a laptop which this morning had Ubuntu installed on it with no partitioning. Since then I have partitioned the hard-drive into three sections: A partition called "William", the original Ubuntu partition and a general data storage partition called "DATA" (in that order). I then installed Windows 7 Professional 64-Bit on the William partition with no problems to speak of. I have been following the instructions on how to re-enable grub & grub2 after a Windows install at URL...

i always had windows as default in my grub (this is my desktop pc, mostly for gaming, i use windows here for about 98% of the time linux is just for working)i lastly upgrades to 11.04 (bad idea never change a running system)and now my grub starts linux as default and i dont know why.i started startupmanager and set windows as default no change i clicked myself into the /boot/grub/grub.cfg and opened it as su - it looks like everything is right here too but i could think of something, i need to change there.

I'm using Karmic with Grub 2 (1.97b4) I have this strange problem going on and believe it might be a bug so if no resolution will file it on Launchpad. Whats happening is this:when I installed Karmic fresh a couple of months ago I never did anything with customising the Grub splash screen. I just stuck with the boring black/white and if I wanted to got to Memtest or my little used Win XP partition would just hit the down arrow when the Grub Splash appeared and go there.A couple of days ago I decided to add some custom colors to the splash screen as outlined in the Grub 2 documentation. I did this to both my desktop (Acer Aspire L100) and my laptop (Compaq) Everything looks fine except for one thing. On the desktop if I hit the down arrow (or any other key) it immediately boots the first option which of course is Karmic. It should have paused the timer and allowed me to scroll down. What this means is I can only boot Karmic at this time. This is only happening on the desktop!

my Setup is Fedora 14 x64 + radeon hd 4830 i've downloaded .run package from ati site with latest driver for x64 systems. installed it, but didn't edited grub.conf becouse i didn't understood anything there (probably didn't spent enough time to get things understand) Now i've lost possibility to enter my Fedora system. during boot it lost it's modern blue boot screen (with filling drop), it was replaced by standard old boot screen with triple-color stripe. after this boot screen monitor start blinking going on and off. and on last step i'm getting "Fedora 14 boot bla bla bla something" on screen. nothing works except Ctrl+Alt+Delete. system reboots showing successful daemons shutting sequence. How can i edit grub menu from initial grub screen is it possible to it's own 'e' option or 'c' from grub command line?
