Nov 29, 2010i am trying to change the boot order on the GRUB menu so that the countdown automatically starts on an older kernel. From what i can see all the solutions on the web want me to edit the /boot/grub/menu.lst file. The problem is that i don't have one. Someone also mentioned that if i don't have a menu.lst file then i should look for the grub.conf file. I don't have on of those either. The closest thing in /boot/grub is grub.cfg but that looks nothing like the descriptions i have heard of /boot/grub/menu.lst file

Jul 13, 2010I want to change the default boot from Ubuntu to windows xp. What file do I need to edit to make that change? In other distros the file is grub.lst but I can not locate that file name in Ubuntu.
I can find the file /boot/grub/grub.cfg that looks like what I need but has a warning "DO NOT EDIT",

General :: Any Proper Way To Change Grub Boot Order
Feb 13, 2010I am a linux noob and that is the reason I want to boot my windows xp by default. Now kubuntu boots first. I've googled how to do this but the topics of other people with the same 'problem' were old or maybe incorrect. Because the official GRUB Ubuntu wiki says you should not change the /boot/grub/grub.cfg file manually. The first line on the .cfg file is also a warning: Do not edit this file. So it continued looking for a proper way to change the boot order. Then I found something about etc/grub.d and also etc/default/grub. The problem is I don't understand how to change the boot order using this.

Open your terminal and type in the following:
sudo apt-get install startupmanager
When that is done go to your control panel and you'll have a new icon that says Startup Manager. Every thing you'll need work with your GRUB menu.

Mar 3, 2009I recently installed a 64-bit version of centOS 5 alongside a 32-bit version, which I use. Turns out the 64-bit version absolutely will not boot and I'm stuck with it as my default boot option. Since the grub being used resides on the 64-bit half, I cant edit the menu file but I know theres a way to do this without it, through grub itself. I have about 29 render nodes now with this problem, and whenever they need to be rebooted I have to hook a monitor up to each one and hold its hand through the boot process. How to change the grub menu through grub itself, basically just change the default boot option and then have it stay that way?

Jun 13, 2011I have a dual boot system w7 and ubunutu. When i had version 10.10 (i think) everything was working fine, the grub would select w7 as boot preference. I have, however just updated to 11.04 and i cant get the grub to change its order. I have tried using startupmanager and selecting the second to last one, as per tips and i have also tried all the options. I have also tried editing the grub file, i think its /etc/default/grub. i have also tried grub-customizer but again, this doesnt work.
I have noticed however that the options shown arent the same as the options when i boot my system. Im not sure whether i have got two GRUBS installed or something like that. I have also tried using boot-repair, however this just states that there is no GRUB installed, however as i mentioned, i can read the grub, and so can the programs.

Nov 29, 2010Using StartupManager (as Quackers had suggested) I do indeed have Windows as my default boot, although it appears at the bottom of the menu. See Dilemma 1 below for that detail.
Dilemma 1:Grub2 has set up the boot menu so that Windows is the last item on the menu. This is because the Menuitem entries for the Ubuntu kernels are generated by script 10_linux, while the Windows Menuitem entry is generated by script 30_os-prober. Of course, in generating /boot/grub/grub.cfg, the 10_linux script is executed before 30_os-prober, dictating the order of their appearance on the menu.
I'd like to see Windows as the top menu item. Under grub, I would edit /boot/grub/menu.lst, pull the Windows menu item out of the "Automagical" section and voila! It stays on top no matter how many times I upgrade the kernel. While I could possibly do the same with /boot/grub/grub.cfg (see thread "how can I change the order of the boot menu?" for the suggestion) we should all know by now that the next time I update the kernel, my changes will all go away, because we are not supposed to edit that file by hand.
Dilemma 2: As I download and install kernel updates, all the old kernels still show up on my boot menu. My concern is that eventually the sheer number of Linux kernels will render the boot menu unreadable. This is especially of concern if I cannot get Windows to the top of the boot menu. Under grub, I used to edit the menu.lst and comment out the listing of any kernels more than 2 versions old. Now, how do I arrange this omission? A manual edit of 10_linux will be acceptable, provided it still displays the 2 or 3 most recent Linux kernels and their corresponding memtests.

Jan 31, 2010I am upgrading a system to have encrypted disks, it's a two disk system, so I want the BIOS to look at /dev/hdb first to unlock it, then it should reboot, see that isn't a system disk and try to boot /dev/hda. Then that gets unlocked, and the system boots. After unlocking hdb I get a Grub error 17. I can't edit Grub to look at hda as on normal boot it hasn't been unlocked yet, so it can't see the file system at that point. I reformatted an old XP disk as hdb, and it worked fine, but I'd rather not install windows every time, just to reformat it as ext3. Is there a simple way of clearing the boot sector of hdb?

I've only ever had a single HDD before, but now I have 2 * 640GB drives.Does it matter what OS I install first?Will I have to change anything relating to the HDDs boot order in the BIOS?I only got 2 HDDs so in the event of needing to reinstall one of the OS's they're on completely different drives. Mar 11, 2010I have an old Dell Dimension 4500 that, until recently, had 2 hard drives. One drive is running Xubuntu Koala and the other was running XP. I had set up Xubuntu to run LVM.
After needing XP again for a small project I tried reinstalling XP, got disk errors, took the drive out to just have Xubuntu, and now when I boot I get "Error loading operating system".
I have tried restoring GRUB from a Live CD with no help. Everyplace I look on the net talks about restoring GRUB after installing Windows on another drive. I'm trying to get GRUB working again after removing the XP drive.

Dec 22, 2010The first is I seem to have 3 GRUB installs. So whilst I update the one from my live session, the change does not appear in the boot up menu. I had installed 10.10 from a CD into a different partition (sda6), but that will not boot, so I have just deleted this and done another grub install and update. The kernel I am using has just been updated from 10.04 to 10.10 too, and it is this that I use and the Grub I have been working on (sda5).

Ubuntu :: Edit To Change Boot Order And Various Boot Selections?
Jan 6, 2010I upgraded from XP to Windows 7 (I need this for legacy business) and decided to install Ubuntu permanently rather than using from CD. During an Ubuntu session I was prompted to upgrade, which I did, but when I boot up now, there seems to be 2 versions of Ubuntu which I can choose from the boot up menu, plus the usual mem test, safe mode etc, plus the option to boot Windows 7.
Firstly, is there in fact more than one Ubuntu image (and therefore precious disk space taken up), how do I find out, and if so what action should I take?If there is only one Ubuntu and one Windows 7 image, how do I edit (and where is the file) to change the boot order and the various boot selections?
