Ubuntu :: Disabling The Low Power Beep On Installation?

Mar 11, 2010

It is extremely load and aggravating. My version 9.10. I am have no other issues with the internal speaker besides the low power beep. I have tried: blacklist pcspkr in /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist.conf (actually was already done in 9.10) in gconf-editor gone to apps gnome-power manager, unchecked low power notification

gone to sound preferences muted alert volume. If this was a desktop i would just physically disable the internal speaker, but i don't want to open up my laptop do to possible difficulty of reassembly.

Hardware :: Solution For Disabling Annoying PC Beep (Ubuntu)?

Apr 9, 2010

When in a virtual tty, Ubuntu has an extremely annoying audible beep alert to notify the user that he is trying to do something that can't be done. Say for instance, hitting the backspace key at the command prompt. The cursor can not back up from there, so the system issues out a loud obnoxious BEEP in response. I am in a virtual tty often, and have found myself on a quest to eradicate that annoying BEEP from my system, if it is the last thing I do. After trying several modprobe, and other solutions, that did not work, I have found a solution that does.

alsamixer has a setting for 'PC Beep' that can be muted, silencing all audible system complaints from a virtual tty.

It would be a pain to do this every time, so...

amixer is a command line interface to alsamixer. By placing the following command in my .bashrc file, I have solved my problem.

amixer set 'PC Beep' disable

Ubuntu :: Disabling Screensaver And Power Management In XFCE?

Jul 22, 2011

Because Ubuntu 11.04 is a bit heavy for the capabilities of my older desktop hardware, I am in the process of switching over to Xubuntu 11.04 going forward. I found the "sleep inhibit applet" very useful when I was using the Gnome DE, and was searching for a replacement in XFCE that doesn't require installing a bunch of Gnome libraries. I found a description of "caffeine" as a utility that seems to be what I'm looking for, but when I added the caffeine ppa to my repositories, and select it for installation in Synaptic, it wants to add a long list of Gnome-related components. Is there any quick way to temporarily disable the screensaver and power management functions in XCFE that doesn't depend on Gnome?

Hardware :: Disabling USB Power Management For External HDD?

Mar 12, 2010

I am just trying to get a little help with a problem I have been having of late. I have an external Seagate drive (not a FreeAgent), which spins down, but won't wake up. I have googled for answers, and tried everything from sdparm to writing udev rules, but nothing seems to be helping. The most I have accomplished is keeping the drive alive for 45 minutes or so before it fails to respond. What's more, it won't mount on boot-up.I am wondering if this might be down to USB power management not playing nicely with the HD's power management. Is there any way to disable the USB power management?

OpenSUSE :: Disabling Screen Lock / Enable Display Power Management?

Sep 14, 2009

I am a brand new user coming from the MS environment. My impression of openSUSE is that it is like moving into a new house that is well built but the rooms are full of half-constructed self-assembly furniture and appliances without any specific instructions. Nor is it clear which does what and whether all are needed or not. There is a town hall down the road where fellow homeowners gather to discuss what each has managed to deduce about putting their own furniture together. The town hall has a sort of library where thousands of pieces of paper with instructions are stored in an ad-hoc filing system

My latest problem is that I have created a screensaver via the "Configure Desktop" application and set "Enable display power management" and set some timeouts. However, I seem to be asked for a password to unlock the screen when I come back to my computer. I have spent 2 hours trying to find the place where I can disable screen password locking but to no avail. I am perplexed and frustrated at how such an obvious function is so ****ed hard to configure. This is the impression I am getting of Linux in general - it is novice user-hostile and badly organised.

Ubuntu Installation :: What's Up With Scary Beep Sound And Long Boot Up Delay?

Jul 18, 2011

I have a Macbook 5,2, on which I'm triple booting OS X - Linux - Windows, using bootcamp and rEFIt.I had a variation of Ubuntu 10.04 called Uber Student as the linux installation.I installed Ubuntu 11.04 AMD64 instead, by choosing the EFI boot option. Now this gave me some problems. When I shot down, the Macbook gives me a troubling long beep sound. When I start up, I'm still able to boot up into rEFIt and Grub2, but there is a big delay with the screen being black for about 30 seconds and the little white light in the left corner of the Macbook is blinking feverishly. I read something about a guy which had a similar problem and the process seemed to mess up the firmware on his Macbook, so he had to have his MB changed.

What's up with the scary beep sound and the long boot up delay?Secondly, when I want to do an update of the Ubuntu system, the update manager asks me to do a partial upgrade, which includes removing the grub-EFI, resulting in a system that won't boot...

Ubuntu Installation :: Disabling Framebuffer In Installer

However, with Ubuntu 10.04, I still get a distorted screen even with debian-installer/framebuffer=false.

Ubuntu Installation :: Digikam - Disabling All The Repositories

Nov 7, 2010

I installed the PinguyOS version of Maverick, but even after disabling all the repositories that came with it I still couldn't get this to work. Therefore this must be a problem with Ubuntu 10.10 itself, however if this problem does exist is Ubuntu, I'm surprised these forums are flooded with complaints. I've searched them up and down and I found nothing. Anyway, the problem is that I can't install digikam, this is the error I get: The following packages have unmet dependencies.

digikam : Depends: kdebase-runtime but it is not going to be installed
Depends: kdepim-runtime but it is not going to be installed
Depends: libkde3support4 (>= 4:4.4.4) but it is not going to be installed
Depends: libqt4-qt3support (>= 4:4.5.3) but it is not going to be installed
Recommends: kipi-plugins but it is not going to be installed
E: Broken packages

The problem here seems to be that the kde libraries that come with ubuntu are version 4.5 for everything. And it seems digikam 1.4 is built against kde 4.4.

I am extremely tired of having to type in my password EVERY single time I want to do something. Especially having to use the terminal for something as simple as copying a file from one directory to another.

Ubuntu :: Beep Command Does Not Work?

My beep command stopped working -- it does not beep. I think this happened when I upgraded to Karmic (but could have been earlier). I use the beep command to notify me of important events.

I tried looking in sound settings, and did not find anything suspicious. I also tried googling but most stuff just describes how to "disable the annoying beep". Lastly, I tried different software channels and repositories to find an alternative program to the beep command, but nothing happened.

Ubuntu Installation :: Using The Power PC Port To PS3 Of 9.10?

Feb 13, 2010

For various reasons I have decided that it would be helpful to use my PS3 as a backup computer for homework and basic word processing. I looked up some instructions on installing Ubuntu on the PS3 and followed them exactly. I'm using the PS3 port, I put it on a clean disk, I already partitioned and installed the OS (by that I mean, I used the install other OS function on the XMB) When I run the OS it brings me to the live CD with the penguins, but after I hit enter, the screen just goes black. Occasionally it has given me the initramfs screen, but only sometimes.

I also noticed, on the first screen, before I hit enter there is a "ps3av_send_cmd_pkt" error. I have looked all over google for a fix, but have found little help. I am using the Power PC port to PS3 of 9.10.

Ubuntu :: Karmic Re-enable System Beep

Feb 24, 2010

I like the system beep because I can tell checkgmail to beep when an email comes, that way my speakers don't have to be on.Anyways, I did a fresh install of Karmic the other day. Something is being weird with me when I try to re-enable the beep. Karmic blacklisted pcspkr in /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist.conf . Here's what happens:I leave "blacklist pcspkr" in blacklist.conf and restart. I do "sudo modprobe pcspkr" and then "beep", and it beeps. Good.

Then I comment out "blacklist pcspkr" in blacklist.conf and restart. I do "beep". Nothing. I do "sudo modprobe pcspkr" and then "beep". Nothing. I do "lsmod | grep pcspkr". It's listed there as it should be. I check with "sudo grep pcspkr /var/log/dmesg" and find no errors.

I can manually make it shut and power down from the terminal with the command:

sudo shutdown -h -P now

or:

The fact that it works from the Terminal but not from the GUI suggests there might be a coding problem with the GUI but discovering and fixing that is way beyond my capabilties.
