View 3 RepliesI did not upgrade my system when the 9.10 version was released but I'd like to do it now. The update manager gives me 9.10 as the only available option...this would mean I have to upgrade my system twice...is there any way to upgrade directly to 10.4 without passing through 9.10?
View 9 Replies View RelatedUpdate Manager lists the 'latest version" as 10.10, so I assume I should upgrade to that, download all the updates for 10.10, then upgrade to 11.04, or should I just do a clean install of the / partition? I have my HDD divided up" / /swap /home, and /home has three users. And if this question has been posted many times before - feel free to beat me up. I can take it

View 1 Replies View RelatedI have ubuntu 9.10 how to make it or upgrade it to latest 11.04? I don't want to do new installation?
View 1 Replies View RelatedI just did the latest upgrade in 9.10 via the update manager and it required a reboot. When I rebooted Ubuntu failed to load. In recovery mode it fails saying that it can't find my root device and has some suggestions about what might be wrong. I looked at the file it listed in /proc/something and the devices available by uuid in /dev/ and what's listed in /proc/something isn't in dev. I haven't made any changes yet for fear of causing worse damage. The shell it bumps to is ASH and it doesn't look to have much editor support to make changes to the proc file(ECHO > ?). Is there a safer way to get my system back online?
I'm running 9.10 AMD64 on a Dell Inspiron laptop with a dual boot to Windows 7 (For browser testing web apps/sites)
I am getting a black screen on the latest kernel upgrade 2.6.31-20. My computer completely boots up, but goes black after a minute or two. For now, I am booting up with the previous kernel.
View 3 Replies View RelatedI'm currently using Ubuntu Studio Lucid and would like to use Ubuntu Studio Maverick, but I'm unsure how to go about the upgrade. Should I upgrade to generic ubuntu maverick then upgrade to ubuntu studio? Or install ubuntu studio maverick from a DVD?? Or something else?? I should say that I have a separate /home partition.
[Edited because what I first wrote was confusing:] when I started the process of upgrading with Update Manager it said that quite a lot of things would be removed (it would be upgrading only to generic Ubuntu for one thing)---I aborted that by the way. I was wondering if anybody knew of a way to avoid having to first sort of note everything that I have installed, then do the upgrade to generic Ubuntu, then do an upgrade to Ubuntu Studio, then reinstall all of the apps in their newer versions. Might there be a way to upgrade the OS itself first and then just directly update the apps without having to reinstall them, figuring out what to install all over again too?
Is it possible to upgrade 8.04 directly to 9.10 without 8.10 and 9.04 ?
All manuals said that i should pass all version, but I don't want, because it will take too long.
What is the best way? Just burn 9.10 and install it without thinking?
I'm using ubuntu 8.10 which is already installed. Recently I have downloaded ISO file of ubuntu 10.04. Is there any way to install that ISO file i've downloaded without writing the ISO file in a CD?

View 1 Replies View RelatedIt used to be, that with grub (not grub2?), I could restore the boot partition by the following:
# grub
grub> find /grub/grub.cfg
hd0,10
grub> root (hd0,10)
grub> setup (hd0,10)
Now this no longer works with whatever grub 10.04 uses, I suspect it is grub2? How do I restore grub to the specific partition I need and NOT to MBR? I have a different boot loader and this boot loader is directed to Ubuntu's boot partition.... Since I cannot boot directly to Ubuntu's boot partition I am perhaps left with only LiveCD to do the recovery, right?
We have been using Ubuntu 8.04 with ltsp the server is Intel P4 with 2 GB Ram and the 8 client consist of either Atom or old P3 and P4. Now we want to increase the clients and want to upgrade to latest ubuntu 10.04.
I heard AMD does excellent job with LTSP but is it possible to have intel clients and AMD as a server. If not then which the best intel server I can have other than xenon (Bcoz of the price factor i dont want to go for that)
I'm trying to upgrade netatalk to the latest version because my Time Machine gets corrupted when the volume reaches its max capacity. How do I do it? I uninstalled netatalk, downloaded the latest package, made configure, make, make install (without any errors, just some warnings), but netatalk doesn't seem to run. I can't connect to the shares. If I install netatalk 2.1.2 via synaptic everything starts to work again. How to upgrade netatalk to the latest version on ubuntu 10.10?

View 1 Replies View RelatedI'm running 10.10LTS at present, I upgraded via the Upgrade Manager last night, Firefox 3.4 and D-bus stuff if I remember correctly. The system then gave the "restart now or later" buttons and I hit the "now" one. My system, an AMD 3800+ dual core job in an MSI mobo then shut down and, er... died. hitting the momentory action power switch gives an ocasional short noise but I have no power/fans or anything. It's a 480 Watt PSU with green leds and stuff I don't really need but the price was good, so I'm not convinced that it's dead... yet.
Is it possible for an upgrade to stuff the power-up circuitry? Maybe power management?
My next step is to swap the PSU to eliminate this as the "faulty" item. It leaves the Mobo, screwed CMOS and possibly the switch cabling/connector but it's all a bit suspicious. I'm basicially a hardware guy so that's the path I'm following. Unless the upgrade's written to somewhere it shouldn't?
I haven't had time to investigate further as I was dragged away shouting and screaming to a prior engagement by "she who must be obeyed".

If not, you can download this file [URL] and copy it in the directory /etc/zypp/repos.d on your system.
refresh this repository (only needed if autorefresh is turned off for this repo)
(sudo) zypper ref virtualbox
upgrade to the latest Sun VirtualBox
(sudo) zypper up -r virtualbox
recompile the VirtualBox kernel module
(sudo) service vboxdrv setup
Done! No need to reboot.
Code:
# rpm -qa | grep VirtualBox
before -> VirtualBox-3.1-3.1.2_56127_openSUSE111-1.x86_64
after -> VirtualBox-3.1-3.1.4_57640_openSUSE111-1.x86_64
I am relatively new to the Linux System (8 months). I am having issues after upgrading the Scientific Linux 6 kernel from its current 2.6.x version to the latest version that SL6 has available. The issue is that once I install the upgrade and reboot, the internet becomes extremely laggy when scrolling on web pages, so much so that you get a ripple like effect as your scrolling. Which doesn't occur in the current kernel i am using.
Current Kernel is: 2.6.32-71.18.2.el6
New Kernel RPM update is: 2.6.32-71.29.1.el6
I wish I could figure out the problem but I am having trouble identifying what exactly the current kernel has that the new one doesn't that would cause the internet lag. I have read other topics with similar kernel update problems, but none have expressed an internet problem & only an internet problem from a kernel update.
I'm looking to upgrade squid 3.0.x to the latest version 3.1.x. Is there a way of doing it without losing the current configuration ? The installed version was done using the binary package (rpm) and not compiled from a tar package.
View 8 Replies View RelatedI have CentOS 5.5 installed on my Dell D600. This release includes SAMBA 3.0.
Question: Is there a way to use yum to upgrade / install the latest version of SAMBA (3.5.3)?
A "yum search samba" shows there is only the "samba3x" release available - which is SAMBA 3.0
I've downloaded the SAMBA3-3.5.3-43.el5.i386.rpm package for Cent OS 5 from the SAMBA.org site, but when I try to install it, it fails due to package dependencies.
Short of downloading the source and compiling it myself, is there a better method to get the latest version of SAMBA installed on my system?
