I let the update manager run overnight on my netbook because it was taking a while. When I woke up, my netbook was off. It may have shut off during the updates. Now, when I turn it on, it gets to the login screen but the keyboard and mouse don't work. Is there anything I can do without a Live CD? Unfortunately I don't have a flash drive or anything with me.

I have a Logitech Wave keyboard and mouse for my computer. I am not sure which version of Ubuntu I am running on but I think it is 6.10. When I boot up my computer I can go into the BIOS and earlier today it would even let me press escape to seee which operating systems I could boot. Now it no longer lets me see the operating system I have (which is why I cant say which version of Ubuntu I have). It takes me to the log in page and asks for the username and password but I cant type and I cant move the mouse. Earlier I could also use Alt+F1-F12, but this is no longer working either so it just sits at the login page and nothing works at all. The computer that is having this problem is very old it is a Proteva and when I opened up the actual computer the processor says:

I know that the BIO's are to old for Ubuntu to run properly because at startup it also says that: "ACPI :
BIOS age (1998 ) fails cutoff (2000), acpi=force is required to enable ACPI" it also says that: "ACPI : unable to load the System Description Tables."
I have'nt used this computer for about a year or two, but the last time I used it it worked perfectly fine. I have been seeing questions on the forums similar to mine, but their problems are on other versions of Ubuntu and their mouse's are said to work fine. I cant try any of the solutions for the problems I have read about because I cant open the prompt that you get when you are at the log in screen and press F2. I have no idea what to do.
I'm on a LG E500-VAP36P, with 3gb RAM, 250 Gb SATA HDD (Kubuntu Hardy kernel 2.6.27-9-generic), and my keyboard and my usb mouse don't work at the login screen. My touchpad works and my keyboard works in command-line session. This is my xorg.conf. I also attach a relevant part of my syslog.

I run the updates on my laptop a while ago and decided to restart it to check if everything went okay. It seems not.
The only way i can get on the desktop, is to choose the recovery mode, su to user and startx.
This is a common error during booting on both computers. Starting the hotplug events dispatcher: udevderror binding control socket, seems udevd is already running

I downloaded and burnt the Kubuntu 10.04 release to a CD. I tried to install it. First time, couldn't find the disks and eventually it froze. Ok, second try, when it's contacting the "time server" (or whatever) another freeze, but this time I notice everything is running fine and then get a nice little image with the current time (increasing seconds and all). Third attemp, clicked the "update this installer" and it went fine. "Yay!" I thought. Well, a few minutes in my beautiful 10.04 system and again, another freeze. Hit the power button and to my surprise a "Shutdown" dialog shows up with a countdown. After 30 seconds it logs out and mouse is working again. I log back in and come here to write this long post, and as I was writing the title "Random mouse/ke..." guess what? Yeah, it froze again. And the little bar that goes after the writing continued happily blinking. Hit the power button but this time mouse and keyboard were still frozen in the login screen.
Short version: mouse and keyboard randomly freeze while the rest of the system apparently work fine.
Got myself in a bit of a squeeze here. I was messing around with the Xorg install on my Fedora 12 system. I ended up reinstalling it. Now my mouse and keyboard work fine in single user mode / terminal. But if I try and boot to X they dont work at the login screen. HAL and udev are booting. Ive done a udevadm monitor test in single user mode and its seeing the devices connect and disconnect. Ive also tried both USB and PS2 devices. Same issue. Ive tried playing with xorg.conf and generating it with Xorg -configure :1 I dont know to use to fix it. After banging my head against the wall for 20+ hours I decided it was time to ask for help. m just Lynxing around the web at the moment =X
View 2 Replies View RelatedI know that in previous versions of OpenSuSE one could be in front of the screen/KBD/mouse get things started, and log into another session and get things started there and run some apps, and so on. Now with OpenSuSE 11.x I see no means in which to do so. Is there another way? Point being is that I want to run one application as one user session and another application in yet another user session. Either one I can get to by switching user accounts at one screen/kbd/mouse. Or through VNC. No need to run something like xen or VMWare and incur additional overhead. (It is next on my list to try though.

View 1 Replies View Relatedso, last night i checked my e-mail, jumped on facebook for a minute and went to bed. i got up this morning and my computer seemed frozen; no mouse/keyboard, no network visibility.....nothing. the screen was just frozen. tried too ssh into it to reboot, but the network wasn't up on it. i had to hard reboot. NOW, it just reboots forever....and ever....and ever. i have a WinXP partition on there along with my F12 and that wont boot either. selecting a previous kernel does nothing either. it wont even boot off the F12 install DVD. just keeps rebooting. I've never had this happen to me. so, it seems like a hardware thing to me, but i dont know if its my mobo or the drive. i suspect a mobo issue as the drive still spins up and gets me to the grub menu.
View 2 Replies View RelatedIt's two days now I'm in deep troubles after my last "yum update". The system boots as usual, the graphical login pops up the normal way but no input is handled by either the internal keyboard (the system is a laptop), the mouse pad, the external USB mouse and keyboard.
The hardware itself seems to be working as I can pop up the BIOS menus and even edit the GRUB booting line. But, after GRUB there's no possible input. I've tried to boot the system with the Fedora 11 DVD, rescue menu and then chroot. This in order to run a "yum update" in the hope that the problem was in some broken update. No chance: there's no update.
My questions are:
1. Is there a way to boot Fedora withou any graphical interface from GRUB (or anything else to skip the KDE)?
2. Is there a way to have the (cabled) network activated at boot *before* the graphical login?
3. What the he** is happening to my otherwise pefectly working laptop?
A few days ago I tried installing Ubuntu 10.10 Netbook Edition on my laptop, since it doesn't have such a large screen. I installed it, restarted, and got presented with the login screen. I typed my username and password, waited for a while, sice it seemed to have frozen, and got presented with an error message saying something about "unity drivers" (the window didn't have a windows border, so metacity didn't seem to have loaded yet), and sorry, but I don't remeber the exact message anymore. I clicked the OK button, the system froze for a while again, and I got presented with the login screen again... This repeated itself 3 times, and then I came on the idea to set the session to Ubuntu Desktop Edition. It was slow, but it loaded, but it seemed to have loaded only half of the environment...
Today I decided to just try again, but with the Desktop Edition this time. I booted the CD into a live session, but all I got was a wallpaper with 2 icons jumping up and down. After waiting for quite a long time I got 2 error messages saying Metacity and Gnome-Panel had crashed. When I switched to command line mode (CTRL+ALT+F1), i got a command line interface wich was adding 2 new error messages every second...
I keep starting up Fedora and I'm not able to get far (although it's not always at the same time) before my screen will go black, except it shows the mouse/cursor - but it's frozen, and thhen the caps-lock light starts blinking and I can't do anything or get it to recover. Sometimes it happens after 30 seconds, sometimes 40+ seconds and sometimes within 15 or so seconds.
How do I stop this and diagnose this?
I've tried, in the boot-startup to choose an older kernel version, butt the same thing occurs!

One other thing, it does always seem to happen after I've turned on wireless. And I've been using F11 for months now with no issue.
I run a HTPC which I recently upgraded 11.2 -> 11.3.Most things work fine but I've got an oddity. After the TV is shut down and restored the mouse cursor is "frozen":The old mouse image stays where it isHowever, the mouse IS active, in that you can (blindly) move the mouse, see it mouse-over widgets, and activate them - there's just no visible cursor where the hotspot is.Hardware is ATI chipset (can't remember which, offhand, but it's only a year or two old), running AMD driver, with a HDMI link to the TV.

I am using ubuntu 8.04. I built the latest stable Kernel 2.6.36.1 (with ext4 enabled in .config as I needed to use some ext4 commands).Every thing looked fine and rebooted the machine. After entering username and password the screen is frozen before the desktop screen appears.I can log in and work in the fail safe Gnome though on thenew kernel. Any idea how to fix the problem? Or what I might be doing wrong?
View 2 Replies View RelatedLittle background info: I have a computer where the hdd crashed. Bought a new hdd tonight and installed it. As the computer had no operating system at this point I put in a copy of the live cd and begin to install Ubuntu 9.10(32 bit)...everything went smooth with the install (at least I think). My problem is that when I get to the login screen, I click on my user name to type in my password but as soon as I click on either my user name or guest it basically freezes...Mouse still moves but can't do anything with login or the options on the bottom right of the screen...
Right when it freezes the pixels under the login box mess up, looks like some type of graphics problem?? I'm not sure, but I can't be the first person with this problem Also after it "freezes" I can't utilize the ctl+alt+f1 command either
I downloaded the Fedora 11 KDE livecd, installed it, and after the reboot when I get to that "firstboot" screen, I can't move the mouse, the keyboard doesn't work, I have to hold down the power button to turn off the computer.

On Jaunty, after adding some software through Synaptic (don't remember which software), I lost the use of both my mouse and keyboard at the Login screen. I can't even click on what I want to use (Gnome, KDE, etc.) I had to install the i386 version of Jaunty in Windows just to get into my Linux files. I tried going into the Initialize commands file (advice from Ubuntu forums) and add them, but still no keyboard or mouse.

It has worked fine for years but now when I boot up my mouse and keyboard don't respond leaving me stuck at the login screen. I have tried using a USB mouse without sucess. My USB-powered cooling fan still works in all three USB ports fine. I have tried booting into the LiveCD and got the same results except for the CD auto-logging in. Eht0 still auto-connects to the network fine in the LiveCD. I can't find any wrong except for the keyboard and mouse not responding. My next step is to burn a LiveCD with start-up scripts to enable ssh. Also the touch-pad doesn't respond either

All the text screens look fine, but when it loads the graphic installer, the video gets corrupted, but i have a mouse, but a few seconds later it freezes and hangs, and I can't do anything. Nothing loads. This happens with the livecd's as well.
View 3 Replies View RelatedI cannot use several keys (1,`, q, a, z & Esc) on my keyboard.I have just installed Kubuntu 11.04, AMD64 version via Wubi. Everything went well w/o any errors. At 1st boot, I also logged in w/o errors, and then tried some apps for Office & Network and shut down. The keyboard was still alright at that time. However, The problem started on the 2nd boot after the installation. Those keys do not response in Kubuntu & Windows 7 login screen and even in my PC's BIOS setup.
My laptop model is Dell Lattitude E6410, core i5, Intel HD Graphics, WD HDD 160GB. And I installed on the other partition, not my Windows one.
I have a ubuntu loaded in KDE and this is in dual boot with Windows vista. I was "upgrading" my Linux (through update manager) when my computer just shut down. And when i restarted the computer to login to the Linux all I got was blank screen. I logged into recovery mode and selected the option to fix the packages. I rebooted my system and then again logged into the Linux. This time I could get the login screen but my mouse as well as Keyboard was not recognized. Essentially i cannot type or scroll and cannot login into Linux.

View 1 Replies View RelatedI recently installed suse 11.2 on my system and during the install the keyboard (Microsoft internet keyboard PS/2) and mouse (Microsoft optical mouse USB with scroll wheel) worked perfectly, but once I reached the login screen they both became unusable.
I also tried rebooting into failsafe mode but once reaching the login screen the same happened again, the only key that seems to work is the 'F Lock' key and the optical light appears on the mouse.
I have a problem with mouse and keyboard. Both freeze within 30sec to half an hour after logging into squeeze 64bit (using gnome). My hardware is Asus P7P55D EVO (tested with linux according to ASUS) with Intel i5 760 CPU. I use IBM keyboard and Trust PS2 mouse. I also have MSI HD4350 graphics card, that was at least listed on Ubuntu to be supported, worked fine also with Lenny.
When using same combination with Lenny (64-bit) I never found any problem with either keyboard nor mouse, even running long nights. However there was need to upgrade to Squeeze since it has newer kernel supporting the sensors on board my MB. I used same mouse and keyboard also on Ubuntu 9.10 and had never problems. However when I upgraded to new MB I started with Ubuntu 10.04 64 bit version and experienced same keyboard and mouse freeze as I have now in squeeze. Only way out from this status is hard reset using PC reset button.

View 9 Replies View Related1st install no good, but did second to fix some possible mistakes.Booted to login prompt and then, after login, nothing until entered telinit 4, then scrambled screen, then changed to probably the normal screen background of grey/white with numerous white globes, but nothing else and cursor moved, but wouldn't function on occasions also got box with login name, password locations.Got message of "Display not set" and that the problem was so complex it couldn't be explained with these minimal resources.Did third full install and changed screen option from my known resolution with framebuffer, to safe standard, but no improvement.Lilo was installed to MBR, and had 2 partitions flagged as bootable (/ and /boot).Found nothing on forums or FAQ, but suppose could give change of kernel a shot, but as used what cd started with, that seems unlikely.

I installed from a CD that I burned. 3/4 of the way through the "installing system" process the screen went dead. The cursor does not respond nor does anything happen with the keyboard. Be aware that I don't know very many things about what a keyboard can do. The screen has been frozen for about a half hour now.
View 2 Replies View RelatedFirst I tried VNC. Easy install through Ubuntu GUI, but I could only see a still picture of the Ubuntu-desktop that wouldn't update. I could see on the Ubuntu monitor that the cursor was moving and the keyboard did work, but on my Windows computer, the screen didn't refresh. Then I read a bit on the forums and people seemed content with nomachine NX or freenx. After a bit of hazzle I finally managed to get a connection between my Windows and Ubuntu-machine. But the same thing happened here. I get to see a still picture of the Ubuntu desktop, mouse and keyboard working, but the screen doesn't refresh..!
