Does anyone know if dillo can now be installed in squeeze/sid by adding an unofficial repository to synaptic or does it have to be installed (together with FLTK2) by following the instructions on the linked site?
View 6 Replies View RelatedI'm trying to figure out how to perform a minimal install to a USB attached hard drive. A full install works just fine, when I start the install from the LiveCD desktop, all the USB drives are visible and can be installed to. In the minimal install, the requisite kernel modules for USB storage don't seem to be loaded, therefore, my USB hard drive is not visible and cannot be mounted, partitioned, or installed to.
The reason behind this is I'm trying to build an XBMC install on a USB hard drive and want only the minimum backend OS that's necessary as some of the Ubuntu desktop software causes issues with some of the XBMC software. I've posted on the XBMC boards about this, but my questions have gone completely unanswered,
i tried to install ubuntu netbook remix edition 10.04 on my laptop HP Compaq 550 through a usb flash stick ... with the usb creator which included into the iso image i got this msg (( attached screen-shot )) .i tried another application which makes a usb bootable disk called "UNetbootin" it boots successfully but after booting every thing got FREEZED ... i tried the same thing with ubuntu 9.10 it's succeed .. but i neeed to install 10.04 .

I set up the wireless just fine at my gfs house which has a WEP connection, was able to browse and use yum to update and install software and what not. Now I go to my house, WPA2/PSK connection, set up the connection which connects fine. I am able to use yum to update and downloads packages and apps, but no browser except Dillo. I've tried firefox, midori, and aurora none work except dillo.
View 7 Replies View RelatedI've recently tried to do a full install to a USB stick using a 10.04 cd.
2 things happen as I boot:
1. if Hdds are attached, boot hangs on "checking dmi pool data..."
2. if hdds not attached, "hdd error" scrolls across screen
boots normally w/o the usb stick. I've set up my partitions on usb stick as
1: fat32 2gb <<windows/storage
2: fat32 1.5gb << future persistent install
3: ext4 4gb << hoped-for full install
1 is the first partition so windows finds it nicely. Before install, i unplugged my hdds so that grub wouldn't get confused. I told the installer to put the full install on sda3 with no swap space. I checked (advanced button on summary page) that bootloader is being installed to the usb on dev/sda (sda since no other drives attached). This should put it in the MBR (i think?)
Seems like I pressed all the right buttons huh? Is there a way to diagnose grub and see what's wrong? is there a reason grub may not initialize properly from a usb drive?
I was trying to install Tor and deleted a couple lines out of the sources.list. I think I may have deleted something I wasn't supposed to. When I try to run the Update Manager I get "An unresolvable problem occurred while initializing the package information.report this bug against the 'update-manager' package and include the following error message: 'E:Malformed line 56 in source list /etc/apt/sources.list (dist), E:The list of sources could not be read.'" How can I fix this?

View 2 Replies View RelatedI'm updating the netbook version of 10.04 to 10.10. It is apparently asking for user input regarding Grub. However I cannot move the windows around to click 'ok' nor will the keyboard function. No Alt+Tab, The terminal in the background will not get focus so I can't type in there, I can't get that little window 'Configu..' to get focus so I could just hit enter.
I can however click on all the icons on the left side of the title menu barBut only those. So I could logout if needed, but what would that do in the middle of an upgrade? It is honestly stuck, and I have little hope that I still have a usable system and will have to install from scratch. And I'm really fearful that grub is toast. And I'll first have to remove grub with a windows bootcd (it's a dual boot system). Which is hard since it's a netbook without a cd (will have to use a boot usb drive somehow)
I have a different problem with Firewire drives than I've seen posted here before. All my Firewire drives work just fine - too fine in fact. I can't boot without all of them being attached. Without them attached Suse just boots into a command prompt in maitenance mode. With ALL of them attached Suse boots just fine. I have tried shutting down normally with dirves attached and shutting down normally with drives disconnected (both unmounting before shut down and just discounting when machine powered off). Nothing changes. I need to be able to boot without the drives attached - I am using Suse 11.1 64 bit wiht KDE 3.5 on a 4 core Athlon. All system files are on internal hard drives - external drives just for data storage (no external USB drives).
View 4 Replies View RelatedUpgraded. VBox (Win7 - 64bit) runs well, but does not see attached drives. Removed the drives, and attempting to re-attach, usually results in an immediate Windows 7 crash. Even when attached (lucky) - the drives do not re-attach after a VBox reboot. Is there some easy way to downgrade to 10.10??
View 2 Replies View RelatedI can''t make the machine booth when a monitor is NOT attached to the machine. The PC seems to get past the P.O.S.T with minimal HDD activity, and then it simply hangs there, doing nothing. I know Linux is not booted because the HDD flashes briefly only 3-4 times and then absolutely nothing. When a monitor is attached, everything works perfectly.
I read somewhere that this happend when GRUB tries to display graphics, so I edited the menu.lst and removed the graphics line within it, which causes GRUB to display a B/W clear-text boot-menu (when a monitor is attached), but the machine still won't boot with no monitor. I also edited inittab to boot to level 3, same outcome.

I have a 9.10 fully updated install on an old P4 HP desktop that otherwise runs flawlessly. We moved it to the bedroom to use as a media center and when I plug in a Thermolake toaster with a Hitachi 750G SATA drive it is recoginized and available no problem. I can read/write no problem. It works via nfs4 no problem. The issue is if I reboot while the drive is attached it the machine refuses to reboot and hangs on the initial hardware screen not even showing a grub screen. This has always been a native ubuntu machine with no dual boot or any weird grub2 issues previously. Interestingly, I am getting the exact same issue with another HP desktop (Celeron machine) with 9.10 Server 32bit that I' using as a home server. This is obviously a bigger problem because if the server updates or requires a reboot for any reason I can't just leave the drive attached. This drive houses our movie and music collection.

View 12 Replies View RelatedIt started when I tried to install Kubuntu 10.10. It booted OK from the CD, but after I installed it, it wouldn't boot. It would hang showing "floppy: no floppy found". I think the next part is either initializing swap or disks. No matter what, I couldn't it to boot.
So, I installed with Xubuntu. it worked great, and booted fine a few times. Worked a couple days.
But just today, after updating to the new kernel, it won't boot at all. It gets stuck at the same place!
It does this even if I go back to the old kernel on the boot list.
When I boot into recovery mode, SOMETIMES it will boot. Actually, just once. All other times, it failed to boot even in recovery. I attached the dmesg from one of these boots.
I booted into a puppy partition, and fsck -f my other partitions. It reported no problems.
Could it be a hard drive problem? I don't hear anything from the drive, but it's getting old and I was planning on replacing it soon anyhow.
My computer is a Compaq R3000 AMD64, but I'm running the 32 bit OS.
I recently installed openSUSE 11.4 on another hard disk of my 11.3 machine. I have another drive in my computer that is used solely for extra storage. Before installing 11.4 I could boot my computer with or without the drive installed, but now if I try to boot without it I get Error 17 from GRUB. I don't understand this as there is nothing on that drive that should be needed by boot and I can find nothing in the GRUB configuration that references the drive.I am getting ready to clear the whole system for a fresh install anyways, but it would be nice to know for future knowledge what is causing it.

I am currently trying to install Debian Wheezy 7.6 x86_64 on an Intel Server System R2224GZ4GC4, but the Installer doesn’t recognise any of the devices attached to the onboard SATA controller.
Debian Version
Debian Wheezy 7.6 x86_64
Hardware used
Server: Intel Server System R2224GZ4GC4
Motherboard: Intel S2600GZ4
Onboard SATA Controller: Intel Patsburg 4-Port SATA Storage Control Unit (rev 06)
Device on Port 0: Samsung 840 Pro Series SSD
Device on Port 1: Samsung 840 Pro Series SSD
Device on Port 2: Samsung 840 Pro Series SSD
Device on Port 3: Intel 510 Series SSD
While the onboard SATA controller does support so-called “fake RAID,” this ‘feature’ has been disabled (i.e., the BIOS setting “SAS/SATA Capable Controller” is set to “INTEL(R) RSTe”). This is confirmed by the controller during the boot-up URL...Weirdly enough, the Intel 510 Series SSD contains an old system (Debian Squeeze 6.0, Kernel 2.6.35-5-amd64), which can boot and which does recognise all SSDs.
Remedies tried
* I’ve compiled the list of SCSI, SAS and block device related modules that the Squeeze-System, which recognises the SSDs, used and manually loaded these modules during the install process.* I’ve tried to rescan the SCSI bus by:
Code: Select allfor host in /sys/class/scsi_host/*; do echo "- - -" > $host/scan; done* I’ve tried to remove all disks, save for the Intel 510 Serives SSD.* I’ve tried all of the above combined.
I have been experiencing a problem where the screen loads and after initial first few lines breaks up into multiple repetitions of lines. Reloading helps but has to be repeated when pageing down. Mail is no problem; it is supplied by my network provider. OS is openSUSE 11.2 which I update when advised. Below is a sample from the error console:

I've come across an unusual requirement for a service in my Ubuntu system.Simply put, I need to find a way to search for all instances of a term in a file, delete lines containing containing that term, and delete four lines below each instance of that term. ither that, or copy the entirety of a file to a new file and skip over all lines containing the term plus four below it.This sounds kinda weird, I know. Without going too far into detail, I either have to change the logfile format for a server I'm running which is a huge pain in the butt, or I can just run a script to edit an HTML report generated from said logs. (Said report is really just for managers to peruse, and I like my log format, so I'm pursuing option 2.)
